oh wow.. didn't know Super Nintendo cut out that much frames of animation! You can definitely see it on Haohmaru's Tornado projectile. There's only like 2 frames on SNES, where as the Genesis looks to be a lot more.
My goodness. One thing I like about these episodes is that you never know who's going to win each round. When it seems like one guy has it in the bag, his partner manages to take away his victory in a split second.
Dan: Bigger is better. Trust me. Every girl I ever dated told me that. Greg: So? Every girl I ever dated says "we're really good friends"... (Starts sobbing) Best joke on this channel ever.
I love how you analyze the games and make them justice, i've seen lots of people bashing the SNES version of Samurai Shodown because of the smaller sprites, and i've seen lots of people bashing Run Saber because is "just a rip off", it's like they don't even want to give those games a fair chance, gotta love how the plots are always funny, creative and blend in perfectly with the reviews.
Genesis is better for being more faithful to the arcade/NeoGeo, specially the music. People bashing the SNES version is because of that. Preference for the SNES version is just a matter of 'opinion' and shouldn't be taken in consideration.
Really, most arcade fighting games are better on Genesis/Mega Drive despite them usually having worse visuals. People just go "well you COULD buy a six button controller but I didn't feel like it so SNES wins". Street Fighter 2, UMK3 and SamSho are all better on Genesis/Mega Drive simply because the gameplay is more similar to the arcade, which means you're actually playing something closer to the real thing. Anybody who took Street Fighter 2 seriously could tell you about how so many links and combos that you can do in the SNES port just don't work on the arcade and vice versa.
@@THENAMEISQUICKMAN This is simply not true. I tried REALLY HARD to find these said combos that it's possible on Genesis Street Fighter but not on Snes, couldn't find anything. Considering how Genesis version is just a washed down port os Snes, I doubt that they tweaked the physics in the code. I play A LOT of both versions, they play exactly the same (which is a good thing for genesis, as you can see in the very game being compared here, Genesis Samurai Showdown is inferior to Snes because it changes a lot in the gameplay, comparing both versions to the arcade).
The explanation they gave on that time for Genesis version missing Earthquake was to make other characters bigger. This explains the tiny chars on SNES too (because Earthquake was the biggest one as possible, others would be smaller).
Are you saying that it's not a memory issue, but rather that with the current size of the Genesis characters, they wouldn't have been able to add in Earthquake because the Genesis wouldn't be able to handle it to well? So they would have had to make Earthquake smaller, and as a result make the other characters smaller?
I don't think I've complemented on Dan's musician skills before. Now, I gotta say, he's really good. His rendition of the "Growing Pains" theme is a real showstopper.
I grew up with the Super Nintendo port. It's a great game. Even though you declared the snes version the winner, I'm now curious about playing the Genesis one. Great video!
I love how elaborate the plot setups are to get to the segue of ""This game was great on the Sega Genesis" "No it was better on Super Nintendo"". By this time next year I expect Super Nintendo to be living in the woods and trying to convince Sega to hang with panthers and bears in the introduction to the Jungle Book episode.
It’s interesting now the arcade version used lots of sprite scaling techniques, and it’s kinda shame that the SNES version didn’t try to use a Mode-7 layer to allow scaling. I don’t think it would’ve been easy to pull off due to not really being designed for that but it would’ve looked really cool if it could, and been closer to the arcade.
SNES could've pulled off that effect if it had a SuperFX chip inside. Many sprites in Yoshi's Island had scaling and rotation effects that weren't just limited to a single background layer.
Vahan Nisanian it would make sense for these guys to compare games from other generations although it's not going to be as drastic like 16-bit games. Heck they can do handhelds and PC titles
This one was fun since I had no idea which way it was going to go. Both versions have nice music based on the clips here. A shame about the SNES voice samples. How strange the SNES loses there since voice samples are typically a weakness for the Genesis. I also enjoyed the setup for the episode with the potions and how easily anything is illogical is brushed aside, which is good for a few laughs. Good job as always.
Perhaps ironically Earthquake may have been cut from the Genesis version because his sprite would have been too large with the zoomed in view similar to how in the NES TMNT Tournament Fighters you can't have 2 players as Hothead.
Just realized today (well, with a friend's help) that some Genesis moves are totally different then arcade. Get Haohmaru and check his sword movements (weak, medium, strong) on arcade, SNES, and then check the same in Genesis (different on this). More interestingly, while the Sega CD version lacks Earthquake too, it's a new port (by JVC), and it preserves the arcade movements.
5:15 "So, every girl I've ever dated says we're, really good friends" (depressingly looks down). Imaooo this is one of the funniest vids I think you guys have made, cheers guys, awesome video once again!
You can also hit both slash buttons and both kick buttons to do heavy attacks in the SNES version without the use of the shoulder buttons. Just so everyone knows.
i grew up playing the Genesis version of SamSho. the Genesis version had some attacks missing like Haohmaru's forward stab (medium slash/punch), Galford's jumping spinning kick (roundhouse kick), etc. and, of course, it lacked Earthquake, a character i was never interested in. still it was one of the better NeoGeo-to-Genesis ports at that time.
That's true about the forward slash which is a really useful move. Earthquake isn't a great character and I gave up trying to learn him because he slows the game down. The snes version of this game is too slow to be really exciting but it is very strategic and can have some exciting moments.
great work guys, its to the point where you guys are in my top 5 favorite youtubers, there arent many "real" people left on youtube who does shit for fun anymore
Love this game! Being a massive SNK fan and a die-hard fan, collector and player of the NeoGeo, I love seeing how the SNES and MegaDrive handled the Neo games. Good work guys! MJ
Its weird to me how the super Nintendo version won just because it has one extra character, while in the Fatal Fury video the Genesis version won despite the fact that it was missing 2 characters. Edit: the Super Nintendo is still good.
i personally like the genesis music and sound effects better and do i agree with the graphics for the Genesis version, its really got something special about the genesis version that capture me in over the snes version!!
That 6 button controller... I wonder how different the Genesis catalog would have been with that pad from the beginning. I also wonder why Sega didn't add shoulder buttons to the 6 button pad, being it a response to Super Nintendo's gamepad.
Another fun episode...thanks for making these videos! One thing I wanted to point out though...SNK games are traditionally four button games. The layout is A,B,C,D so its kind of odd that chose to make the games six buttons...typically in an SNK fighting game you would press A + B, or C + D for high level attacks, so the way they laid out the controller schemes on the SNES and Genesis kind of doesn't make any sense.
It's totally weird that you had to hold down the L/R buttons on the SNES controller just to make a hard attack... This completely throws off the timing of combos; as if there were ANY combos at all. Why couldn't they just have 6 different attack strengths assigned to the already existing 6 buttons?🤔
Man, I totally love you two. Just funny as hell. Presentation and script is always awesome. I have no clue why y’all don’t have more subscribers.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
My favorite fighting game of all time! While both the SNES and Genesis/Sega Cd version are good alternatives for those who are not willing to shell out $200 on the Neo Geo port. The 3do version is the 2nd closest to being like the Arcade save for a loading time between each match. Also lol on the subtle joke at the end.
Omg, batman returns is next and in time for Christmas! That was an easy hint since that's what the penguin said. Those games are vastly different. Can't wait!
Personally for me the Sega genesis version is better for me , the sounds and music from the genesis I like them a lot better than the Snes , the Snes music some of them are good remix but the Genesis to me sounded more like the arcade, even tho earthquake is missing from the sega genesis version is still a good port since is uncensored and more accurate to the arcade . Still the snes is good as well but not as great as the sega genesis version but thats my opinion.
I love the continuity errors in the episodes. It adds to the charm. Content is key and u guys smash it. Would love to see these up against the Neo Geo version. Would guess Neo Geo is better though
oooohhh I can't wait for the next game if the hint is anything to go by it definitely was one of my favourites on the SNES...heh I remember buying it when a video rental store was going out of business after watching it on Video Arcade top 10...the Canadian Video game show that spends more time then watching people play video games...lol, anyway true story I played the game ALOT and once I was messing around with the options and didn't realize I set it for the hardest difficulty setting, so I played through it wondering why everyone was so tough but I pushed onward and sure enough it gave methe ending screen indicating I beat it on the hardest difficulty...lol I was so proud of myself and from that point on when I still had it I only played it on the hardest difficulty...that game gave me so much nostalgia as a kid, so I can't wait to see what you have planned for your next episode...well take care!
I won Gamepro’s Samurai Shodown contest during the 1990s. You had to draw the journalist, Scary Larry, in a game parody. So, I drew Elderly Fighter. I didn’t win 1st place, which was an MVS 1-slot arcade unit with a copy of Samurai Shodown, but I did win the Genesis version of the game.
LOL @ That face Dan made during the intro. xD 2:25 "I should have known better than to listen to your hair brained scheme!" - I see what you did there! Also, I wish I had Lucky Charms scented farts! These games look awesome. They look very different from the typical fighters like Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, which I think is pretty suckaweet. I never knew that this was a pretty big series, either. Anyway, great job on the vidya, guys!
"The Samurai are great dancers, they have a potion for that!" Absolutely fantastic! The Sega Genesis is a better game even if it's missing one character. The one thing that's baffling too me is the Sega CD version. It should by all rights be equal to that of the AES. Complete with the zooming effect, but they Tokai didn't do the port justice. The Sega Genesis alone should be able to technically do Samurai Showdown if it had the storage capacity. Both consoles had the same processor setup (Motorola 68K and a Z80 Zilog Zilog co-processor). This is what gives the Genesis the ability to emulate every effect the Snes can display including Mode 7. Now, the Genesis's 68K processor is slower than the Neo Geo's; However, that is where the Sega CD comes into play. It's 68K is not....but again they just ported the Genesis version with CD sound...not cool. Addendum- Galford's stage sounds awful on the Snes. What did they do to it?
Though I have both Japanese SFC(SNES) and US Genesis versions, I stick with playing Samurai Shodown games on my PS2 via the Anthology, Saturn, or PS1. Though I did recently add the Gameboy Sam Sho 1 to my collection (will pick up the other, based on SS3 at a later time), both the first and second GB titles are surprisingly fun for the portable. The 16 bit versions, while both good, just seem to lack that oomph that drew my attention in arcades back in the day while I was there to play Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter II.
The Genesis version prolly could've retained almost everything intact from the Neo Geo version if only they had used a larger cart (48 megs) instead...
Hey guys been a Fan since the Streets Of Rage vs. Final Fight and I got to say another job well done. I'm looking forward to the Batman Returns episode.
Great episode guys! While I do own the the Sega version, I'll have to keep an eye out for the Super Nintendo one. Since you did a Neo Geo ported game, why not compare King Of The Monsters 1 or 2. Keep up the good work! Cheers!
The sprites on SNES look like they were stuck in the scaled back view from the arcade. The arcade scaled in and out. The SNES version with it's ability to produce bigger sprites should be as big or bigger than Sega. When you think about it, after watching the end, I think the reason Earthquake isn't in the game because he would have been a much bigger sprite than the others, and that would have meant they would have had to make the other sprites small like the SNES. They probably chose bigger sprites over Earthquake. That's the only reason I can think they'd leave him out.
The SNES was always BOTTLENECKED at 3.58 MHz with its slow-ass CPU processor... Not much that Takara (or ANY other game developer) could do about that! Had it been at 10MHz or more and if they could've used a much BIGGER cart size like 48 megs for this game, it prolly would've been arcade perfect. They could've priced this game for $100 and it would've easily sold like HOTCAKES!!!
best game goes to NEO GEO version!
SuperHns lmao. I wish they did that.
Neo Geo isn't part of this battle.
okay, Richie Rich 😂
The original is the best 😁
Neo geo was a 32 bits console...genious

Dude, same.
Do you think Greg will ever come back
The chemistry between these two was so much better.
What happened to Greg?
Plenty of women use that "Samurai Potion" nowdays
Dan: Bigger is better. Trust me. Every girl I ever dated told me that.

Yep, I would love to see Clayfighter on here.
Aaron Johnsen Yes! I would love to see clayfighter on console wars!
but would it be a best or worst comparison?

Earthquake sucks ass
I'm the only one that see some resemblance like if they were the young version of GameSack?
lol
You aren't alone on that.

Dan - And i'm Sega
Greg - That's exactly right Sega
No mentions to megapower though.

The Neo-Geo MVS version of Samurai Shodown kicks the snout out of both versions. :P
"snout"?
The 16-Bit wars had the greatest battle in history. Fighting games of that area. Really tested the loyalty of some of the most hardcore gamers.
"The winter dance. For everyone who works at the toothpick factory." Im dying 😂
I am nintendo , and I am sega this console war ,I love u guys plz keep up
Come on, guys, we all know who the real winner is... Greg's beard!
Here here
Forgot to mention that the attacks on the Genesis are DIFFERENT from the arcade. It seems like a different game
Should be called Beard Wars
Don't overlook Dan's lesbian cut.
didn't know Greg was German, I have a character who is German too. But yeah, it's nice to know your heritage Greg!
Great series. I wonder what will happen should you ever run out of SNES/Genesis comparisons? Will there be Saturn/Playstation?
Vahan Nisanian it would make sense for these guys to compare games from other generations although it's not going to be as drastic like 16-bit games. Heck they can do handhelds and PC titles

Atari Lynx vs Neo Geo Pocket

Great episode! If i had 4 hands.. oh boy... Twister!
Lol. Nice!
Ah, caralho! Tu comentou exatamente a mesma coisa que eu, só que horas antes! XD
E o mais bizarro é que o minuto dessa parte é o 7. XD
Console Wars yes you guys ARE PLAYING BATMAN RETURN ON SEGA GENESIS AND SUPER NINTENDO HELL YES

The skits in this episode are pure GOLD! If I were Netflix, or something, I'd give you guys a full time show there, man.

Yeah, we'll look into that.
Good show, guys! May I suggest "The Pirates of Dark Water"? You all will have fun analyse both versions... Good luck...
Great episode. I feel Samurai Showdown on the Mega Drive does at least have better presentation. Shame the PAL release is so expensive!
These videos are always so good. Keep making them.
Thanks! We will!
Console Wars we'll keep trying to make ours better.
Anyone else want to see Blanka go against the green dude on this game?
Great work, guys! Keep up!
Although I personally think that blood and fatalities have more to do with presentation rather than graphics.
"Great could be subjective"

Had the 3do port back in the day. Loved it, still have it, still love it!
Always glad to watch another video. You guys are my favorite low production channel. You guys would make my top 10 underrated gaming channel list.

Batman returns is the next episode. Am I right? Cuze that quote was said by The Penguin :D
/SNES drinks the dwarf potion.

That 6 button controller... I wonder how different the Genesis catalog would have been with that pad from the beginning. I also wonder why Sega didn't add shoulder buttons to the 6 button pad, being it a response to Super Nintendo's gamepad.
probably because they wanted a whole new idea for their game pad. And to be fair, at that time (1989), no game needed more than 2 or 3 buttons
SEGA's controllers were designed after Arcade machines.
The Genesis itself is designed after arcade hardware so go figure ;)
Another fun episode...thanks for making these videos!
One thing I wanted to point out though...SNK games are traditionally four button games. It's totally weird that you had to hold down the L/R buttons on the SNES controller just to make a hard attack... This completely throws off the timing of combos; as if there were ANY combos at all. Why couldn't they just have 6 different attack strengths assigned to the already existing 6 buttons?🤔

Eh it never really competes with mode 7 though.
A faster 10MHz processor + a 48 meg cart could've fixed all that!
The fact that Earthquake was missing in Genesis was the reason I was forced to buy the SNES. Quake was my best character.
This channel is criminally underrated.
Joe Snes yes!
Awesome episode! I'm surprised SNES has the smaller sprites this time.
And Batman is back on Console Wars!
awesome episode..made me late for work watching it lmao...keep em up guys..tone.vs
Hopefully you didn't get in trouble.
love the new video. thank you for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it!
great work again guys 👏
Thanks!
Yaaaaaaay! I was hoping you guys did this one.
I agree with the review and even the final result, but the music. I don't like the SNES music better than Genesis.
Well, i know everyone knows, but Earthquake is missing in the Genesis version is coz the size, and that's why SNES charachrers are so small
Hey guys been a Fan since the Streets Of Rage vs. Final Fight and I got to say another job well done. I'm looking forward to the Batman Returns episode.
Glad we can kept you entertained all these years.
Great episode guys! While I do own the the Sega version, I'll have to keep an eye out for the Super Nintendo one. Since you did a Neo Geo ported game, why not compare King Of The Monsters 1 or 2. Keep up the good work! Cheers!
THIS IS CONSOLE WARS!!! YAAAY!!!
you guys crack me up. maybe fatal fury next?
Not next, but I'm sure we'll get to it.
Console Wars Revolution X for the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis
Excellent as always, guys! Keep up the great work!
Thanks!
