I believe the Genesis version slows down purposely for dramatic effect, similar to how in Street Fighter 2, when you win, it slows down the opponent getting knocked down. It's just not handled as elegantly.
The SNES version of Street Fighter 2 slows down for dramatic effect too. I have no idea why you're going on about specs, when I didn't mention any specs here. I know the SNES and Genesis specs though quite well, so you telling me I'm wrong means nothing to me.
Relax man...these guys have lives and do this primarily as a HOBBY. They meticulously edit the HECK out of these video gems and that is not at all easy to do as a job, let alone as a side project. Not to mention the fact that they play through both games over and over to pick out the finer details. I'm just glad they keep making a new one from time to time.
Gotta disagree on the Sound judgement. The ones used to display "lack of drums" in Nintendo demonstrate a greater intensity instead, which is... kind of the _point_ of the drums? And with the laser sword... no, that theoretical _doesn't_ sound better actually. It drowns out everything else that's going on, a _definite_ drawback I would've said made Genesis better for lacking. Maybe there _should_ have been some sort of sound more that "swish", but far better that than overpowering the music or other sound effects. As for the Password system, the tranquil tone fits better for a small glade with trees and no enemies, goals, or hazards than a more traditional password screen would've had... like Sega's. Best Sound is definitely on Nintendo. As for Gameplay, you say the rocket charges automatically like it's a _good_ thing, but what if I don't _want_ it to activate, or be on full charge? That little "feature" suddenly becomes quite the large detriment, doesn't it?

9:32 music and sfx sound muffled on SNES nowadays (for almost all games released on it). The clear genesis sound is sometimes a little harsh, but way clearer and stands the rest of time so much better.
ben owen thanks :) I’ve always liked the more orchestral and/ambient soundtracks on SNES, like DKC, Killer Instinct and Chrono Trigger. But still, very muffled.
Rocket Knight Adventures is Sparkster 1, Sparkster: Rocket Knight Adventures 2 is Sparkster 2, Sparkster is Sparkster 3 and Rocket Knight is Sparkster 4.
The soundtrack to these games are just absolutely wonderful... And, would you believe it, it's done by Akira Yamaoka (of Silent Hill fame) and Michiru Yamane (of Castlevania fame)... Two perfect composers just jamming and doing what they do best!
I've been waiting for this since I met you guys at Too Many Games! Loved this video. I know people think the sound is crap, but I've always preferred the Genesis soundtrack way more. It's punchier. It's more industrial-feeling (which goes with the whole mechanics and magic feel of the original game) while the SNES soundtrack is more orchestral, more like, you're playing as a KNIGHT. I did NOT realize just how muffled the SNES one is until now though! And the Genesis game feels way more like a sequel: You have an upgraded rocket. The mech fight with Axle is a dead ringer for the first game's fight. You now have an optional golden upgrade (Sonic 2, anyone?). The SNES game feels like a spinoff/continuation of the first to me. I like them both though. The final SNES level, on the ship? SO cool. And the flight level is still a favorite, I play through the SNES game just to get to that (even though I'm not a fan of that particular mech fight because Axle is a pain if you don't knock his arms off in time). And it is generally prettier to look at. Thanks for making this video! Nice to see Sparkster get some recognition :)
When he says Sega melody sounds cleaner and Super Nintendo sounds muffled I feel like that could be said of literally every game SNES vs Genesis. It's just the nature of the sound chips used. On a side note: the SNES password screen looks like hell to enter the passwords.
I had and still have Rocket Knight adventure on my megadrive, such a great game, havent played Sparkster yet on either platforms, but i need to. Also the end with the Vigilantism had cracked me up haha. Great episode guys ;)
Fucking hell what!? SEGA won this!? Rocket Knight Adventures was the best game, but the SNES version of Sparkster despite being more like a spin-off it seems more like the true sequel due to its control scheme. The Mega Drive version played completely differently to the original Dockef Knight Adventures, with the jetpack charging automatically and you moving so slowly that you are forced to jet around like a madman forcing you to take unnecessary damage. However, the SNES game controls much like RKA. The jet pack is charged manually, Sparkster is faster, the sword has a laser, and so on. The SNES sprites also look more like RKA, with for example Sparkster himself looking way more like his RKA sprite than his Mega Drive sprite. The strangest thing is that RKA was getting ported to the SNES, and the sequel, Sparkster: Rocket Knight Adventures 2, started development on the SNES. And the Mega Drive sequel was gonna be the spin-off. However, then the SNES port of RKA got scrapped, so they started development of the same sequel on the Mega Drive instead of the spin off. However, the SNES sequel was nearly finished, so they couldn’t scrap it, so instead they made it a spinoff and removed the subtitle. Then the Mega Drive sequel port was built as the sequel, despite originally it was gonna be a spin-off. That’s why the spin-off plays like original, and the sequel plays like a spin-off. I think both games are good, but the SNES version is better. And the soundtrack is incredible either way. The SNES’s beautiful orchestrated soundtrack sounds incredible! However, the Mega Drive’s FM synthesis and slightly more tracks in my opinion fit the game better as the epic music is still there, but the rough Mega Drive audio sounds incredible when coupled with the gameplay.
I actually like it when part of the game is locked away behind difficulty or something else you have to do, in general, I like it when parts of a game, whether it be a whole level or an exclusive boss is locked behind a difficulty. It gives the game replay value, and rewards you for getting better at the game. Think about it, you replay the game on Hard, thinking you know the drill, exprecting to finish after the 8th stage, but are then completely blown away when you enter the 9th stage!!! And you are like "holy cow, there is MORE?!?
Agreed if it's done well and the cut content doesn't make the game end too abruptly and the skill "entry ticket" to unlock the levels is not too disproportional to the crescendo of challenge of the rest of the game. The non-japanese version of Bare Knuckle 3 does it in a abrupt, unsatisfactory and kinda insulting way, imo. But in this case, and like this video pointed out, the Mega Drive version *does* that by only giving you the best ending if you unlock gold sparkster.
I saw this on my notifications, and decided to save it to wind down after my College Writing final. I'm glad I did. You guys just keep getting better and better.
As always, you give good argument on why which one overall is better. I love your style and you show how both great consoles have better games for certain titles, and some of them are fairly equal or identical.
It looks like nearly all games made on the SNES were done in a very low resolution, probably done that way to get max colors. The problem is that certain games become harder if your resolution is lower because it cuts off the screen and you cannot see far enough. The Snes was a system that was atleast 1 year newer than the Genesis so when you consider that, the Genesis was a pretty impressive system considering it had off the shelf parts and the Snes had some custom parts. Where they sacrificed power with the Snes in CPU power they got returns with a better graphics chip. But the Genesis had a CPU that was more than 2x faster and powerful than the Snes CPU. Overall the Snes was the better hardware but it should be, since it's newer. It just makes sense.
After reading your comment, I just realized it makes a lot of sense that Snes was largely an RPG system, those games typically have smaller sprites, characters didn't need to be as detailed compared to platformers or run'n guns. Action games could work on Snes, but more care needed to be taken on how screen space was used. This is also the reason many Genesis to Snes ports were worse.
The Genesis was made for fast arcade games, and it generally does them better than the SNES. Even the PC Engine, despite being three years older than the SNES, often beats it in that respect. The SNES shines when it comes to slower, richer experiences. RPGs certainly benefit from the better colors and sampled music.
ben owen, no offense but Snes having better hardware is objective not subjective. Also, please don't think I don't like the Genesis. I prefer the Sega Genesis, I was just stating was was true. Overall the Snes had better hardware. It has a custom made graphics chip and sound chip. It was newer so of course it should be better, that is how technology works. What is subjective is your opinion. You prefer the sounds from the Genesis to the Snes. I feel the same way when it comes to many games. There are many games that I just love the sounds and looks of on the Genesis. You're right that a lot of the sounds on the Snes suffered from that muffled sound. I'm not sure if it was because of lower bit rates to save space. Back with cartridges the game developers had to scrimp on file sizes all the time. So overall, while the Snes had newer hardware the Genesis stood up well. What bothered me is Sega doing stupid things like discontinuing the Genesis while it was still selling very well in 95.
ben owen - I still play the genesis and some times the snes today through emulation and I have to say that the genesis sound chip, which was a Yahmaha I believe, if used correctly can put out near CD quality music. If you don't already know of it, check out Gauntlet 4 for the genesis, great game made even better with an original soundtrack that sounds like CD music. I'm sure you're familiar with the great music in games like Streets of Rage and Shinobi. Alien 3 was another game that had great tunes. I wasn't aware of the ram issue with the snes chip but it seems like they made sacrifices to get the graphics up as well, like using a very slow CPU that I think was less than half the speed of the motorolla 68000 in the Genesis.

Great episode as always! Played all three of these religiously as a kid. On the subject of slowdown though, I think that slowdown after killing bosses was intended to be a sort of “dramatic slow motion” effect. That’s always how I saw it, anyways

Even though I played both versions as a kid I prefer the Genesis version of Sparkster. But your opinions about the SNES version made me want to go back and play it believe it or not. Although the game still feels incomplete and brutally difficult I can appreciate the work and features that were implemented into the game where it's definitely worth a sit down session with beers or taking turns with friends that are into old school gaming to sort out strategies between levels. I had absolutely no idea about the sword collecting in the Genesis version or the idea that you can unlock a golden Rocket Knight!!?? WTF!!?? Now I gotta replay the Genesis game too to appreciate all of that versions charm. I know the episodes are Genesis VS Super Nintendo but to me all the Rocket Knight games back in the day were leagues above most of the other cutesy animal platformers and I'm sorry but the recent modern day remake was such a let down for me. Fails in comparison to the frantic, strategic, music driven nature of the early games. :)
ben owen God no. The game play is horrid on the Sega. Graphics are much improved in the SNES version, and the sound, Capcom or not, is much richer and detailed as well.
ben owen Except, even in that state, it sounds better than what most companies got out of the Genesis hardware; Capcom included. I'd take a bass heavy Capcom SNES soundtrack than a standard Capcom Genesis soundtrack.
It actually makes sense to have the password after you press no on the continue screen, because why would you need the password if you didnt want to keep playing right then?
This is possibly one of my favourites episodes so far. And yes, the Genesis version is way better. I followed the hint from the previous episode and decided to play the games to have an opinion myself. At that point I only had played Rocket Knight Adventures. After playing both games I can confirm 100% the Sega version is more fun to play. The Snes have some moments I really didn't like. The ostrich level is a joke, apparently if you don't kill any enemy on screen the same 2 enemies will fly over you for almost the entire level. The musical level is so forgettable and pointless, and the fight with your rival at the end of the level is very underwhelming. The Sega rival fight is hard, it follows by the final boss and feels more accomplished after you beat him. The Snes is so easy it made me laugh from inside. The boss fight of the space level is one of the worst things I have ever done in a 16-bit game. It is so random, rage inducing, it has no strategy at all. The midboss of the "final" level takes like 2 full minutes to beat at least, you just jump and attack, and jump and attack. The fact you fall straight down after using the jetpack has put me in lots of trouble, and the L/R buttons don't help that much. (In fact, Greg should have gone up and straight down at the end of the video lol). Of course the genesis version is not perfect. In normal mode it is still super hard and the levels takes forever, but it is still a solid action game. Anyways, thank you guys for the episode! Edit: Btw, the "fart" segment could feed a chinese kid with the other end from stretching LOL.

I think i would’ve preferred the same kind of sword as the first one in the Sega game, but other than the difficulty, that’s the only thing I wish was different. The snes game is great too, I just don’t think they went out enough on a limb with game mechanics

I'll admit, I was actually confused by the images that were used as the hint for the next episode in which the "Joe & Mac" games were reviewed, since I didn't know who both guys were supposed to be. I actually thought the guy on the left was Mickey Mantle, and the guy on the right was someone named Donald, meaning that the games to be reviewed would be the ones that featured both Disney characters together: "The Magical Quest 3: Starring Mickey & Donald" on SNES versus "World Of Illusion: Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck" on Genesis (though I am aware that the latter was already reviewed in a past episode, to which it was compared to the first game of the Magical Quest trilogy for SNES). XD

SNES sounds fine at a low volume through TV speakers, but the Genesis sounds amazing with a half-decent sound system.

I had and still have Rocket Knight adventure on my megadrive, such a great game, havent played Sparkster yet on either platforms, but i need to. Also the end with the Vigilantism had cracked me up haha. Great episode guys ;)

Fucking hell what!? SEGA won this!? Rocket Knight Adventures was the best game, but the SNES version of Sparkster despite being more like a spin-off it seems more like the true sequel due to its control scheme. The Mega Drive version played completely differently to the original Dockef Knight Adventures, with the jetpack charging automatically and you moving so slowly that you are forced to jet around like a madman forcing you to take unnecessary damage. However, the SNES game controls much like RKA. The jet pack is charged manually, Sparkster is faster, the sword has a laser, and so on. The SNES sprites also look more like RKA, with for example Sparkster himself looking way more like his RKA sprite than his Mega Drive sprite. The strangest thing is that RKA was getting ported to the SNES, and the sequel, Sparkster: Rocket Knight Adventures 2, started development on the SNES. And the Mega Drive sequel was gonna be the spin-off. However, then the SNES port of RKA got scrapped, so they started development of the same sequel on the Mega Drive instead of the spin off. However, the SNES sequel was nearly finished, so they couldn’t scrap it, so instead they made it a spinoff and removed the subtitle. Then the Mega Drive sequel port was built as the sequel, despite originally it was gonna be a spin-off. That’s why the spin-off plays like original, and the sequel plays like a spin-off.
I think both games are good, but the SNES version is better. And the soundtrack is incredible either way. The SNES’s beautiful orchestrated soundtrack sounds incredible! However, the Mega Drive’s FM synthesis and slightly more tracks in my opinion fit the game better as the epic music is still there, but the rough Mega Drive audio sounds incredible when coupled with the gameplay.
I actually like it when part of the game is locked away behind difficulty or something else you have to do, in general, I like it when parts of a game, whether it be a whole level or an exclusive boss is locked behind a difficulty. It gives the game replay value, and rewards you for getting better at the game. Think about it, you replay the game on Hard, thinking you know the drill, exprecting to finish after the 8th stage, but are then completely blown away when you enter the 9th stage!!! And you are like "holy cow, there is MORE?!?
Agreed if it's done well and the cut content doesn't make the game end too abruptly and the skill "entry ticket" to unlock the levels is not too disproportional to the crescendo of challenge of the rest of the game. The non-japanese version of Bare Knuckle 3 does it in a abrupt, unsatisfactory and kinda insulting way, imo. But in this case, and like this video pointed out, the Mega Drive version *does* that by only giving you the best ending if you unlock gold sparkster.

As always, you give good argument on why which one overall is better. I love your style and you show how both great consoles have better games for certain titles, and some of them are fairly equal or identical.

It looks like nearly all games made on the SNES were done in a very low resolution, probably done that way to get max colors. The problem is that certain games become harder if your resolution is lower because it cuts off the screen and you cannot see far enough. The Snes was a system that was atleast 1 year newer than the Genesis so when you consider that, the Genesis was a pretty impressive system considering it had off the shelf parts and the Snes had some custom parts. Where they sacrificed power with the Snes in CPU power they got returns with a better graphics chip. But the Genesis had a CPU that was more than 2x faster and powerful than the Snes CPU. Overall the Snes was the better hardware but it should be, since it's newer. It just makes sense.
After reading your comment, I just realized it makes a lot of sense that Snes was largely an RPG system, those games typically have smaller sprites, characters didn't need to be as detailed compared to platformers or run'n guns.
Action games could work on Snes, but more care needed to be taken on how screen space was used.
This is also the reason many Genesis to Snes ports were worse.
The Genesis was made for fast arcade games, and it generally does them better than the SNES. Even the PC Engine, despite being three years older than the SNES, often beats it in that respect. The SNES shines when it comes to slower, richer experiences. RPGs certainly benefit from the better colors and sampled music.
ben owen, no offense but Snes having better hardware is objective not subjective. Also, please don't think I don't like the Genesis. I prefer the Sega Genesis, I was just stating was was true. Overall the Snes had better hardware. It has a custom made graphics chip and sound chip. It was newer so of course it should be better, that is how technology works. What is subjective is your opinion. You prefer the sounds from the Genesis to the Snes. I feel the same way when it comes to many games. There are many games that I just love the sounds and looks of on the Genesis. You're right that a lot of the sounds on the Snes suffered from that muffled sound. I'm not sure if it was because of lower bit rates to save space. Back with cartridges the game developers had to scrimp on file sizes all the time. So overall, while the Snes had newer hardware the Genesis stood up well. What bothered me is Sega doing stupid things like discontinuing the Genesis while it was still selling very well in 95.
ben owen - I still play the genesis and some times the snes today through emulation and I have to say that the genesis sound chip, which was a Yahmaha I believe, if used correctly can put out near CD quality music. If you don't already know of it, check out Gauntlet 4 for the genesis, great game made even better with an original soundtrack that sounds like CD music. I'm sure you're familiar with the great music in games like Streets of Rage and Shinobi. Alien 3 was another game that had great tunes. I wasn't aware of the ram issue with the snes chip but it seems like they made sacrifices to get the graphics up as well, like using a very slow CPU that I think was less than half the speed of the motorolla 68000 in the Genesis.

Great episode as always! Played all three of these religiously as a kid. On the subject of slowdown though, I think that slowdown after killing bosses was intended to be a sort of “dramatic slow motion” effect. That’s always how I saw it, anyways

Yes the series is back
Even though I played both versions as a kid I prefer the Genesis version of Sparkster. But your opinions about the SNES version made me want to go back and play it believe it or not. Although the game still feels incomplete and brutally difficult I can appreciate the work and features that were implemented into the game where it's definitely worth a sit down session with beers or taking turns with friends that are into old school gaming to sort out strategies between levels. I had absolutely no idea about the sword collecting in the Genesis version or the idea that you can unlock a golden Rocket Knight!!?? WTF!!?? Now I gotta replay the Genesis game too to appreciate all of that versions charm. I know the episodes are Genesis VS Super Nintendo but to me all the Rocket Knight games back in the day were leagues above most of the other cutesy animal platformers and I'm sorry but the recent modern day remake was such a let down for me. Fails in comparison to the frantic, strategic, music driven nature of the early games. :)

ben owen God no. The game play is horrid on the Sega. Graphics are much improved in the SNES version, and the sound, Capcom or not, is much richer and detailed as well.
ben owen Except, even in that state, it sounds better than what most companies got out of the Genesis hardware; Capcom included. I'd take a bass heavy Capcom SNES soundtrack than a standard Capcom Genesis soundtrack.

This is possibly one of my favourites episodes so far. And yes, the Genesis version is way better. I followed the hint from the previous episode and decided to play the games to have an opinion myself. At that point I only had played Rocket Knight Adventures. After playing both games I can confirm 100% the Sega version is more fun to play. The Snes have some moments I really didn't like. The ostrich level is a joke, apparently if you don't kill any enemy on screen the same 2 enemies will fly over you for almost the entire level. The musical level is so forgettable and pointless, and the fight with your rival at the end of the level is very underwhelming. The Sega rival fight is hard, it follows by the final boss and feels more accomplished after you beat him. The Snes is so easy it made me laugh from inside. The boss fight of the space level is one of the worst things I have ever done in a 16-bit game. It is so random, rage inducing, it has no strategy at all. The midboss of the "final" level takes like 2 full minutes to beat at least, you just jump and attack, and jump and attack. The fact you fall straight down after using the jetpack has put me in lots of trouble, and the L/R buttons don't help that much. (In fact, Greg should have gone up and straight down at the end of the video lol). Of course the genesis version is not perfect. In normal mode it is still super hard and the levels takes forever, but it is still a solid action game. Anyways, thank you guys for the episode! Edit: Btw, the "fart" segment could feed a chinese kid with the other end from stretching LOL.

RudJohns' gaming channel yeah, people sure love their opinions! I love the Sega game at first, but it really is fucking tough. I think they are both fabulously fun games. I think i would’ve preferred the same kind of sword as the first one in the Sega game, but other than the difficulty, that’s the only thing I wish was different. The snes game is great too, I just don’t think they went out enough on a limb with game mechanics

I'll admit, I was actually confused by the images that were used as the hint for the next episode in which the "Joe & Mac" games were reviewed, since I didn't know who both guys were supposed to be. I actually thought the guy on the left was Mickey Mantle, and the guy on the right was someone named Donald, meaning that the games to be reviewed would be the ones that featured both Disney characters together: "The Magical Quest 3: Starring Mickey & Donald" on SNES versus "World Of Illusion: Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck" on Genesis (though I am aware that the latter was already reviewed in a past episode, to which it was compared to the first game of the Magical Quest trilogy for SNES). XD
