The *NES Double Dragon port* might be single-player only but, that single player experience is *Pure GOLD!*
The Japanese version of the Master System port supports FM audio.
Aaaaand I'm off to listen to this version of the master system's music!
You can put the FM module in the western version
You can also use a Powerbase Mini FM adapter to play Double Dragon on a Megadrive/Genesis.
Therefore making it almost arcade perfect
@@harlandmct You are correct, I have Vile Timm's FM module on my SMS and the NA version of Double Dragon has the FM music. There are even people hacking SMS ROM's and adding FM music to it.
"The name of the game is Double Dragon not Single Dragon." That's a good one!!!
And a true one
That line alone just seal the deal in favor of the master system version
@@ConsoleWars hi I'm nintendo
And I'm sega
And this is console waaaaars
Ninja garden nes vs sms !

I love that you guys linked the coyote urine in the description. That really helps sell the bit. Good stuff.
I prefer master system version because i remember my older brother having and playing it on his Sega master system and sometimes we played together co-op.Also master system version reminds me more the arcade version.
I prefer nes version because it’s a lot more fun
SMS is so superior that will be a shame if it loses. You are right , the Coop and the Arcade similarly is what matters here. My neighbor had the NES version and was always in my house to play the SMS version. He not even cared for the NES version
To all you guys...
That’s it! Are we doing this?
@@firestriker3580 wut
I would argue that it being so much like the arcade version is a weakness since the game can be beaten in 25 minutes and its much shorter than the Nes version.
Double Dragon is now officially the oldest game you guys have looked at. Both versions were released in 1988.
Hope you enjoyed it!
@@ConsoleWars I did. Keep up the fantastic work.
1988!!! THE best year for Metal!!!
@@infernicide666
Indeed!
@@brianbabin6333If I’m alone, sure I’ll pick the NES, but that’s the only way I’d choose that over the SMS one.
These iterations of Double Dragon were so different, owning both is a must
I'm still recovering from covid so just now getting to see this. It's nice to see something different from the normal snes vs genesis
Thank you, and feel better!
compare "Desert Demolition: Starring Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote" on MegaDrive with "Road Runner's Death Valley Rally" on SNES, as they both are Road Runner games!
I just discovered you guys. Your content feel like a relic from the time of early youtube gaming videos, but mostly in a good way.
To be fair EVERYONE had Alyssa Milano in the 90's!
Pimp new console wars after bingeing it this week. It's feels good to watch these shows in theses weird times. Good hearted show.
Dan: "Time to pull out the BIG guns!"
Pat: "YES!" *pulls out big gun*
I guess I won't be alive for Christmas because that part killed me XD
Finally, I was waiting for this so long!
We all wait for it. They should do a cheats and playthrough episode after every comparison.
Hope you liked it!
@@ConsoleWars i need a new shirt, hat, and a nifty mask. Any discount for buying all 3?
He's having a stroke while he's falling.
I think the NES version looks better. Background graphics are more detailed on NES. SMS's look kind of plain.
the nes backgrounds do look better. SMS looks like they were drawn with a crayon
@@eyesofnight rip Yoshi's Island graphics
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Great episode! love the work you put in. Here are my suggestions:
Phantom 2040 SNES vs Sega Genesis
flashback: the quest for identity SNES vs Sega Genesis
By the way you deserve more views and subs.
Sega with fm sound enabled...no competition! Also its DOUBLE Dragon!
Wow...how have I never heard of you guys? Have a sub.
Awesome! Welcome to the channel
Next episode is Twins? What game would have twins like Dr. Evil and Mini Me? There was no Austin Powers for SNES and Genesis? Maybe the Nintendo and Genesis Minis?
Totally not on the mini consoles too. Check the game list on the official mini websites.
Really a great episode. I love when you release a new video! You’re one of my favorite channels on RUclips.
Awesome!
My 1st video game, SMS version, I still love it and play it from time to time
15:05
"Time to bring out the big guns!"
"YES!"
I'm dead. 😂
Thought that was gonna be yet another reference to Alyssa Milano. 😂
Last minute joke too
No mention of the FM sound on the SMS version? Factor that in, and it's at least on par with the NES version if not better.
sadly the sound effects in fm are really bad so still nes has better music and sound effects
No chance. The nes version of the music is iconic. I'd say outside of Brazil no one even knows the SMS version and the ntsc SMS didnt even play FM sound back in the day even if it was on the cart.
The FM music should have at least been mentioned but it's a weak point since hardly anybody used it and the FM chip is only great at music and usually kind of sucks at sound effects.
You guys have really stepped up your acting and comedy!
Thank you! Its a lot of work
Please do Thunder Force III vs Thunder Spirits! Shmups were such a big part of the 16-bit generation and is pretty much the only genre you haven't covered yet.
Love the fact these guys are still together.
Great episode! Comparing Master system game and NES game is a good idea. You may also compare Final fight on SNES and Sega CD for example.
When will you two do Blackthorne for snes vs 32x?
15:09 LOL i just think in that when Dan says big guns.
15:06 I love this part! 😅
I've been waiting A LONG time for this!!! PLEASE do more NES vs SMS episodes! I've always said that the best home port of Double Dragon is on the Master System...
Hope you enjoyed it!
Excellent Episode!!! Solid review as always and the skits were funny and well done!! A+👏👏👏👍👍
Thank you very much!
I so love this channel. They're from my era. Console Wars (CDub) for life.
There isn't even a discussion to be made there: the SMS version is light-years ahead
SMS RAMPAGE vs NES Rampage. Should be next.
7:37 "Look what the SEGA game does..."
*ad about men's jewelry plays*
I was gonna say the same.
Those ad placements tho'
I got a Taco Bell ad.
I got Sega Double Dragon FREE in Christmas 1988, for purchasing the Sega Master System. However, I had to wait 3 months for the game to come in the mail, just in time for my birthday.
I laughed way too much at the Tom Petty "ehhhnnnn" song. More than I should've. I'm going to hell again...
Ditto. That was the jam! Lol
Glad you enjoyed it! Almost didn't make the episode but I'm glad it did since everyone seems to enjoy it
@@ConsoleWars of course! What at least I feel makes this channel different from the plethora of other channels is the humor, silliness and production. You truly should have a f&@kton more subs than you have as you deserve it. I try and tell everyone about you guys. Keep it up!
Finally caught up! I gotta say, this series binge was a load of fun. Its been great seeing all these old school games during this journey. Some of the brought back memories, both good and bad. Also the humor and most of the effects were really good.
I don't think I've ever heard of the Sega Master System Port of "Double Dragon" before, let alone seeing it. As much as love the NES game, despite its difficulty, the SMS game looks surprisingly good, and even though I've barely seen the original Arcade game aside from those stills, its amazing to see how more faithful the SMS port is to the Arcade version, kinda makes me wonder what went wrong with developing the NES port.
Anyway had a blast with binge watch, wishing Pat a speedy recovery from the dreaded "Covid-19", A very Happy Birthday to Dan, and looking forward to more episodes.
The All-American in me was real happy when you brought out the big guns. The SEGA sweep is shocking to me, Double Dragon is one of the best games in the NES' library, but it still took the loss. Oh well qnq
Thats my childhood right there..
Getting into bar fights
The music for the NES double Dragon is some of the best on the system!
Hardly the best for the system. Mega Man games, Tim Follin composed games, Konami developed games, and others sound much better
I have to say, you have got me seriously looking forward to every time you make a video getting to hear one more time, "That's it! Are we doin' this?!" You need a shirt with that on it somewhere! Love it guys, keep up the great work!
SEGA’s going to win! I’m calling it now! Having two players simultaneously makes it more accurate to the original arcade game, and more fun in general. Either way, I’m excited to watch it!
Can’t be other way
Yep. Besides it's Master System. C'mon 🇧🇷♥️
Hope you enjoyed it!
That means nothing if the game has awful hit detection and horrendous sprite flicker - which it does. Crap x 2 is just double the crap.
@@nebularain3338 its a good port overall. Keeps the feel from the arcade intact. Nintendo is something different...nintendofied.
Discovered the Sega Master system version a few years ago. Kind of addicting. Got me through a lot of down time.
Nintendo wins Battletoads.
Sega wins Double Dragon.
Battletoads/Double Dragon ends in a tie.
Console Wars truly is perfectly balanced.
I agree with the results actually, sure, I didn't play the Master System version of Double Dragon back in the early 90's (as I was born in '91) and only played the NES version, but I can actually apreciate other versions of the same title no matter the console (yeah, I was kind of a Nintendo fanboy those days but ended that fanboy attitude around 96 when I got the chance of play with a Sega Genesis, I never regret leaving that fanboy side and become fully neutral in the console wars stuff and just apreciate the games as I was supposed to do from the very start).
As all things should be
As it should be
I still need to play the Sega Master system version. I completely understand where the SMS version would get the win, but I think I'd end up still liking the NES one better, just because of how much time I've put into it over the years. Great video guys!
Can't argue 2 players but if you're going to play solo. NES version wipes the floor with the Master System.
Sure, but this is an arcade style beat 'em up. There's almost no genre more reliant on having fun with friends aside from fighting games.
I got a Console Wars request! Spiderman vs The Kingpin on Genesis v.s. The Amazing Spiderman: Lethal Foes on SNES
How in the world did you get Mark Dacascos and Scott Wolf in this :O!
We promised them a chance to work with Alyssa Milano again
Best intro y'all have ever done, what with mixing the visual styles and all. Kudos.
I find it funny Arc System Works made the Sega port since they ended up buying the rights to Tecnos Japans IP'S including Double Dragon
yeaaaaa.... wish they'd spend a little more on these projects with that license tho.
@@DSan-kl2yc same , they have just been releasing the older games and making games that look like the older games, Arc System works could totally make a great new Double Dragon or Kunio game with amazing art and animation
Even including the NeoGeo version
@@JoeyJ0J0 they don't care to seemingly.
The flicker on Sega is just too much to deal with. It's like getting poked in the damn eye.
Bimmy and Jimmy approve of this contest.
Holy shit you guys actually covered this one! I remember suggesting it ages ago expecting it to happen at a much later time but this came so much sooner than I had expected. Top stuff guys
This one is an easy win for the NES version for me, so much nostalgia in it. I appreciate its differences from the arcade and it is one of my favorite NES titles.
The soundtracks of Double Dragon 1 - 3 NES versions are on Spotify. I listen to these while doing house chores.
I agree. NES version had much smoother combat. It lacked continues, and two player, and would have been nice in a mod or future version but ya. Every person that liked nes version best didn't get a like lol
The presentational differences from the arcaded are fine, but not having two player? That's just a killer. Beat 'em ups are just not that fun alone no matter how good the game is.
Product Overview from Home Depot "Coyote urine can be used to frighten small animals away from your yard." this is probably more of a surprise to those of us who've lived in urban areas our whole life
8:27 Missed An Oppurtunity For BABES IN SEGA!
I was thinking about it, but I went with the saucy music instead
@@ConsoleWars Yeah Lol
Before I watch this hands down master system version man had such great times with this system growing up I was the sega kid while everybody else had nintendo
I know this seems like a weird suggestion, but could u guys try Resident Evil 2 for the N64 vs the Sega Dreamcast.
That would be awesome. I'd love for them to look at more consoles lol
Not sure they'd ever compare two versions from different console generations to be honest.
@@oliverraven if anything they'd probably make a "what's the difference" Video
RetroPCGamer RE2 GC vs DC could work but N64 vs DC is too big a gap I think, DC would win easily against N64. Also, I don’t think there’s enough of a difference really, they’re super similar.
Dan and Pat have you guys ever been requested to do Hook based on the Spielberg film of the same name for Super Nintendo and SEGA Genesis? I think that video would be pretty Bangarang
Hahaha great episode! I love the end "Who's in it?" "WELLLLLLL!!"
Thanks!
Auto-generated subtitles are hilarious :D
"I'm Nintendo! I'm Sicko!"
And instead of "You two bums" it read "youtube bums".
You have to do judge dredd for Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo next episode
Now if Billy Zabka and Ralph Maccio came in as the Double Dragon duo that would have been awesome!
I never knew Double Dragon existed on the SMS since I never owned one.
I wished you guys were used the FM chip version from Japan.
8:06 And then Marion gets killed in the next game
OH MY GOODNESS YOU GUYS TACKLED DIFFERENT CONSOLES. Wow that makes me insanely happy. It even made me remember a suggestion I had a while back. You two should do Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub Zero on N64 and PS1!
That Sega flicker would drive me nuts.
Still more satisfying than the n
Nintendo version, and I'm a Nintendo fan.
Master System version was way better.
On a tube TV, and on the 80s, that was super fine. Super exciting to play the arcade "at home"!
When I was a kid I never noticed all the flicker on the 8-bit consoles.
@@ItsDeebs I did and it didn't bother me much, but that Sega Double Dragon flicker makes the actions invisible all the time from the clips in this video.
@@matthewbartke4424 Yeah playing them now I notice and some games are atrocious. But I was 5 when I got a NES and wasn't aware of hardware and developer limitations. I was to young to be a critic. My level of critic was. Is it fun.
I got a Genesis when I was 8 and PC at 10. I didn't play a NES again until I brought one with Double Dragon when I was 17 (2002). Just so my brother and I could experience some nostalgia.
@5:55 that Linda's theme music hit different. A true class tune 🔥🔥✊.
I think in most of these NES vs Sega Master System episodes Sega will win in graphics and Nintendo will win in music
That face Billy make when he falls off the edge on nintendo. Lol had me in tears.
Oooohw.. we're going 8Bit now... yeah.. IT'S ON!!!!!
They did ninja gaiden too
This is like one of the best episodes. I love how you guys did different variants of the double dragons. Big praise and many love of the show.
I do love the double Dragon series including different versions but my top favorite would have to be double Dragon neon.
ARE WE DOIN' THIS???
Just wanted to say how much I love the channel.
I started watching the day before Greg left and it really bummed me out hearing the news. I thought it was just my luck that I would stumble upon something great and then it end the very next day...
Happy to see that wasn’t the case and the channel is still going strong 💪 love you guys and thank you for helping us all make it through 2020 a little easier.
2020 blows. Glad we can make it easier for people
I have nostalgia goggles for sure, but just the memorable music from the NES version is enough to win it for me.
Great video as usual guys! But I’m not sure I like the scan line effect used on the games, when the games were full screen I thought it looked great! But when it got shrunk down to two windows side by side it caused a lot of artefacting for me, maybe it’s just my screen idk but it looked much worse than it would’ve otherwise, kinda awful tbh. Still though, it was really entertaining and I loved the different double dragon characters, the pixelated game ones were amazing XD
Entertaining stuff, though I think you kind of glossed over the sloppy controls and missing moves in the MS port. They're a big deal.
the terrible hit detection...hence why the game is harder. I think their main argument is that it's a more faithful port, which it is.
Sega always win....Despite the flickering graphics....Double Dragon on the Master System still is a good game with it's charming music, great co op, gameplay and graphics!
//Sega fanboy
13:37- I wanna hear the all grunts version. You can't talk about something and then not show it.

The Master System port actually has 2 soundtracks because it is compatible with the FM Sound Unit. While the sound unit was Japan exclusive originally, there are numerous 3rd party solutions and even the Analogue Mega SG to utilize it today.
no question about it, hands down the NES version :)

I have SMS Double Dragon. I found an SMS in a Portuguese junk shop for 8 dollars, and my city has a major retro game retail market. The cords cost more than the SMS.
Double Dragon, 1 of my favourites. The NES, 1 of the greatest consoles of all time.
Wow!! Finally an nes vs sms video I hope you guys to more versus games with these 2 consoles 👍😁 great video
Thanks!
I can't get past the awful collision detection on the SMS game. You should do the sequel next. Oh wait, there is no SMS port of the sequel.
It's on the Genesis*
@@mattnova18 Which would do no good in an SMS vs NES comparison. Though as bad as the Genesis port is, the NES version would handily beat it.
I loved the opening skit to this one. You've really outdone yourself. I haven't seen the rest of the video yet, but it's probably good too.
How'd you like the ending?
I just can't with the Sega game play. It's too "not Double Dragon". Hit stun is all wrong. Enemies don't fall when they should. Uppercut and roundhouse come out due to button speed instead of striking a stunned enemy. Enemies don't even go into a stunned animation. It feels all wrong.
Love these. Wish we could have more.
VG Jimmy: your video game ruined the franchise!
Cartoon Jimmy: Nah! That was the movies Fault.
Me: at least the movie had a way better fighting game tie in then your crappy cartoon did!
I played that double dragon neo geo fighting game, it was pretty great.
I'm sorry but how do you guys not have a million subscribers yet? Look forward to your videos. Keep it up.
Thanks. Maybe one day we'll have 1 million
All that flickering on Sega is really distracting. I'm happy with my NES version
Loved the Sega version as a kid, was the sole reason I would go over my neighbor's house, but once the second game hit NES that slowly faded. Cracked up at that ending, would actually pay to see something that absurd.
Same here. Used to play the Sega version all the time with my cousin. Then later I got an NES and along with it double dragon 2 and double dragon 3. Some of my favorite games of all time.
