Back in the 90s my family was poor but my father was able to buy us a Genesis model 2 from a pawn shop along with Shaq Fu. I knew it was a bad game but I still thanked my dad and gave him a hug. Funny enough the game grew on me as I played it more.
Its not terrible. Especially for a kid
Back in the day we learned to love our bad games, because it was a long time until the next birthday or Christmas...
@@ConsoleWars I actually liked it when a child
As kids we appreciated what we had, because that was ALL we had. Today as adults with disposable income where many of us have 100+ games on our backlog we have become super spoiled.
@@PikaLink91Hey... some kids were spoiled as hell.
Wow, I had no idea the SNES version was missing so much!
It is. I think it's the same case as Mickey Mania. A game released for Genesis and terribly ported to Snes with no care at all. At least in this case we don't miss much 😃
seems like the SNES version used a lower memory cartridge.
@@nimaiiikun the problem is not necessarly the memory but being a port from a different system. It always comes to lazyness. Because some aspects of the game had to be redesigned and in 99% of cases developers didn't. Then comes cropped.screeen and random missing content
true, depending on developers. and good ports we'll see in Console Wars next episode
Yea I rented the sega version after already owning the SNES version out of curiosity. I was shocked by how much more was on the Sega version.
Great video! Also another tidbit that you missed in terms of graphics is that in the Genesis version, the characters have shadows. Meanwhile in the SNES version, they have no shadows
How did I miss that?
ha, i remember that too
another subtle thing i recall is missing some background animation too. i didnt know about other differences ya mentioned; very interesting. must've been another rushed game because of budget and/or time restraints i wonder. that hurts games so much, always wanna get in there and fix it, wish i were a game developer, i'd hack & modify so many games.
Man, don't you hate it when you're just working and then a snake comes out of nowhere and bites you. I hate it when that happens XD
Love these episodes to death!
It's not as bad as exploding.
Also getting shocked in the work environment is a thing in some places.
More than 100 episodes and still you are making GREAT content. Thanks, guys! Cherrs!
Thank you!
I used to watch Console Wars all the time, but I hadn't done so in over a year now. I just needed something to watch during breakfast. Spotted the channel in my subscriptions list, "ohey! I wonder what new stuff they got?" And it's still just as good. Keep up the great work, y'all!
Welcome back!
Good to know we still got it
Such a fantastic episode, you dudes totally got the funniest and most informative show in retro gaming 😂😂🎉
Thank you
The only bad things about a new console wars episode is having to wait for the next one to drop. Grsat episode fellas
I'm probably one of the 5 people who dig this game haha
agreed. i somewhat avoid that which is better argument of these two consoles but these guys made it fun. although i've always enjoyed learning about the differences and versions. also, practically none of Console Wars episodes keep calling everything "retro". thats gotten so annoying the last few years. videogames are just videogames.
I grew up on the Genesis version. Had no idea who Shaq was yet and rarely played story mode. So I didn't hate it
A month
I always enjoy when you guys have to switch and defend how _bad_ a game is instead of how good it is! XD Looking forward to Wolfchild next time!
Episodes just keep getting better and better! Great episode!
Thank you!
You are simply the best, Incredible humor, creativity, great ideas and cool production, thanks for everything!!!
Thank you for the kind words!
Congratulations to the Sega Genesis for having the better version of Shaq Fu. I love how Pat got to use cropping and Dan got to use better instrumentation as their points for once.
No. Congrats to SNES for the worst 😃
I just came from your old Sparkster video and just wanted to say I’m glad you both are still making content together. It’s not often channels last a decade or more, but I love this type of gaming content!
So excited for this episode! I have been waiting for you guys to play this! It’s finally happening!
Same.
What's the hints ?
@@extremedee7320Easy… it’s Wolfchild!
@@GamerFunOriginallyAarush what's that ? Lol I never heard of that
To Shaq Fu's credit, they avoided the easy route of making a basketball game out of a basketball player and I appreciate the originality in the genre choice. As for predicting which game I think will be worse... well the SNES has more buttons, so that gives the Mega Drive version the advantage in being worse.
1:23 - Welp; was not expecting Pat's dream to have absolutely nothing to do with the game being reviewed... unless this is a metaphor for a buggy game.
3:47 - I enjoyed learning about this fact and it... oddly explains a lot. Shaq Fu has always had a stiffness to the movement yet the animation manages to look nice at the same, much like a cinematic platformer.
4:39 - So far, the Mega Drive version is surprisingly looking a little better. The SNES version has a smoother look, but the dots of the Mega Drive environments give a greater sense of texture. The rocks look grainy and the grassy hills in the distance look more likely.
7:02 - Shaq Fu managing more here than a lot of fighting games with including arcade endings to go alongside the devoted story mode. Gosh... this game actually had a lot of love poured into it.
7:44 - Like, I know the gameplay is the thing that truly holds Shaq Fu back, but the critiques here for the graphics and presentation are so hilariously minor. It's kind of amazing. This truly had the makings of a great game, just not the gameplay part.
10:53 - Gosh, I feel sorry for the poor developer on the SNES version here. As for the songs, I think Sega's is better here. The SNES has a better sound quality but to the Mega Drive's credit, they don't try to replicate exactly what the SNES is doing with it's music. They change quite a bit of the beat and end up making the music rather distinctive and a little more exotic in some ways.
13:51 - An yet, it's a nice feature. The problem I see here is the sheer amount of buttons you need for everything. Perhaps 3 or even 2 attack buttons would have been better than having two Lights and two Heavy attacks.
15:00 - Yeah, missing a whole five characters is pretty significant for a fighting game. Seems like the SNES has a clean sweep of being the worse version of Shaq Fu.
19:50 - The beard joke got a real good laugh out of me. Fantastic video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Good episode, naturally. The fatality move was just fantastically executed. Well done guys, well done!
Love this concept of whose game is worse not better. Also, Bruce Thunderchunk is a hilarious name 😂
A great episode again. Your reviews are like always excellent, but your real time stories are every time a big surprise. By Pat´s dinner scene for example I had to think about the dinner scene from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Keep it up!
I remember this game! Brings back memories on the mega drive, controls were awful lol
Did you ever play the fighter called Fighting_Masters "assuming your region was same title.... reminds me of that but I kinda had fun with that it was somehow better than shaq fu
i like that game. rented it a couple times. needs a sequel
Ive been missing the premieres lately been hardcore for overtime, but watching these videos makes me appreciate the games i grew up to
I love how you guys always (or at least almost always) call out the composer of the music. Hilarious episode as always gents, looking forward to the next one!
Wolfchild? Oh, wow. That's a deep cut.
A werewolf episode for Halloween. NICE. 🐺
That's the plan
The snake bite had me rolling 🤣 🤣
Finally, the very episode I’ve been waiting for since I started watching you guys. Thank you.
You’re welcome
I don't think its the worse game ever not even the worse fighting game. The Genesis had loads of piss poor street fighter clones. Great episode really enjoyed it.
i watched this series like, years ago, and i find it amazing that you guys are still going. its so cheesy and i love it, with a gaming history lesson on top.
also Red hot chili peppers shirt, nice lol.
BRAVO!
I imagined you guys would get to "Shaq Fu" at some point in this series. I actually bought the Sega Genesis version a long time ago, haven't played it yet, but I can be prepared for some frustration and laughs.
Great episode guys. 😃
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great episode! I really enjoyed it and the ending was so funny! I love this videos, by the way! They are so good! Anyways, I’m excited for the next episode in the future! Bye for now!
Glad you enjoyed it!
@@ConsoleWarsNo problem!
Lots of hard work goes into what you guys do... It is good content that makes this channel hilarious.... Keep rocking
Thank you!
I like the idea of competition for "Worst Version". It just makes a lot more sense than arguing over the "better" version of a generally all-around bad game.
Could you guys make a video focusing on Nintendo Controllers VS Sega Controllers? I'd love to see a video that focuses on the hardware. And you could cover more systems
I have been waiting for this! Shaq Fu was impossible to ignore forever for Console Wars!
Personally I bought years ago both the SNES and MD versions !!!
And since Shaq Fu was developed on the Sega platform and then ported to the SNES. The Sega version of Shaq Fu has 5 more playable characters;
Auroch, Colonel, Diesel, Leotsu & Nezu + 3 more stages; The Lab, The Wasteland & Yasko Mines. Also the Sega version has a longer story mode.
Why content was lost is anyone's guess I guess, but many developers including Delphine Software found it much easier to work with software on the MD/Genesis and then
port it all over to the SNES platform rather then vice-versa.
Also Sega had a lower license fee so that could also be a factor for many developers.
Delphine should have been ashamed to put their name on this game. Period.
SNES rom cost more.
@@iwanttocomplain Hmm I don't know about that so I have to let that be, but I can't imagine a rom on a SNES is very much different from a Sega rom.
But I need to look that up as it is very possible due to the SNES having larger tech support.
@@WarioSaysSo I just read that once somewhere.
There’s a few different kinds of rom on SNES: loRIM, hiROM, ‘fastROM’ and ‘slowROM’. Something like that.
@@SomeOrangeCat - The game is graphical, design and sound wise a very good fighting game. And I have been playing it on both systems back then and liked it.
The only thing that ruins the full expesrience is the CONTROLS. That's it.
A game can't be rated a disaster like it has if all else is decent to good but the controls only. However that is also the most important factor to work with any game or else it will not be regarded that well.
Still I find this game decent enough among 16-bit fighting games as it requires more practise to master it and find your character(s) that work for you (well in VS. mode).
Balls, Heavy Nova, Fat-Man, Batman Forever and others was worse fighting then this.
Hell yeah! Way better than the comparison I did. You guys should do more bad game comparisons to see which is worse. Rise of The Robots is way worse than Shaq Fu. Same with Slaughter Sport.
Trivia: To fit the exclusive on the Lab level, Rajah (who's name originates from the word 'Raja', which means 'king' or 'the ultimate power', given the fact that he is a prince) had his line changed from "You may have gotten past my swords but the Colonel will teach you a lesson, fool." to "You may have gotten past my swords but Voodoo's magic will teach you a lesson, fool.".
🎶 Everybody plays the fu, sometime, there’s no exception to the rule. 🎶
Great episode. I need some comedy in my life right now.
Happy to help
1:35. Dude! You had me rolling with circuit city!! I remember that store!!
Always a good day when I see a new video from y'all.
Great video guys and you forgot the Ancient City of K-Mart-tika lol though what really happened in the bathroom?
17:30 Pats bit here is one of the best in Console Wars history. How he didn’t crack a smile idk. Perfect
Thank you! A favorite of mine, as well. took about 5 tries. First one had Dan cracking up, and we just kept at it
The fact ya'll both said "Worse Shaq Fu" killed me.
I pity the man who was programming the SNES version of Shaq Fu. Electrocution, exploding, and snake bites all on the same day? That's just a rotten way to go.
2:02 🎵Life is like a hurricane here in Duckburg,
Race cars, lasers, aeroplanes - it's a duck blur,
You might solve a mystery or rewrite history.
DuckTales oo-oo!!🎵
😂 The sense of humor nails my funny bone.
3:25 Now you've got to work in a blurb about the Boston Molasses Disaster.
Just looked it up, that was a lot of molasses
Used to played this game for the Sega Genesis as a 90s kid. Great memories.
Ahhhh, it was so good to see these console war videos come back! I played the SNES version back in the day. I already didnt like the game and to hear it was missing stages and characters too??? That's nuts!
Funny thing is I use to work in the hotel not long ago that was built where the old St Guile's Brewery stood that caused the explosion which lead to the London Beer Flood. As a part of the concierge team I was telling the story of the Beer Flood all the time. Can't believe you mentioned that here.
Oh wow lol
Graphics: Both versions are cropped. SNES has less levels. SNES is worse here.
Presentation: Less details in all departments for SNES. SNES is worse here.
Sounds: There may be a little bit more songs on Genesis, but it is nothing to brag or gripe about. Eveything else is equal. Tie.
Gameplay: I never played the SNES version, but I have played the Genesis version. The controls are poor. Other people have said that the SNES controls are smoother than Genesis. I'd rather take less characters over broken controls. More scoreboards means nothing in the long run. If you want to brag or gripe about that, what is wrong with you? Segs has the worst of this department in my book.
SNES does come out worse than Genesis, but I'd rather play SNES because of the smoother gameplay.
Wolfchild is next.
Man, I love Magic Hat beer! I haven't had a #9 in so long. Oh yeah, great episode guys!
I'm a sheetz guy, so we are mortal enemies. Lol. But I still love watching you guys. Continue to make great content, I'll keep watching!
It would be funny if Shaq were a guest character in Mortal Kombat 1 and his "Shaqtality" would be dribbling the opponent's head until it exploded.
Agreed
Back in 2002/2003 when I was fresh out of high school would hit up various thrift shops on the daily for gaming deals, taking the advantage of actually having my own money for once, and still have my Genesis copy of Shaq Fu complete in box I snagged for $3. Even at the time my only knowledge of the game was reading the reviews in gaming magazines and knew it wasn't worth looking into beyond a curiousity rental.
The intro like always the best and glad to see a new episode😃😃
NBA Star with his own rap album, movies and videogame. Shaq was trying to be his own brand, very outside the box and good for him.
Missed the premiere but loved the episode of course. Who would have thought there'd be such substantial differences? Most people just write off the game before getting to the nitty gritty details. It's like the SNES version is an alpha build in comparison to the Genesis version.
Im know what the next episode will be on: Wolfchild.
And my requests for you:
Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures
Bart vs. The Space Mutants (NES vs. SMS)
Virtual Bart
Krusty’s Super Fun House
Pinocchio
Bonkers
Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow
Chuck Rock II: Son of Chuck
Mega Man: The Wily Wars (Genesis) vs. Mega Man 7 (SNES)
The Flintstones (Genesis) vs. The Flintstones: Treasure of Sierra Madrock (SNES)
Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure
The Incredible Crash Dummies
no Chuck Rock II for the S.N.E.S.
Really good episode guy’s. Thanks for all ways putting out good content.
There used to be channels dedicated to finding every copy of shaq fu and destroying them😂😂
why
@@ConsoleWars I'm guessing it's because there were people who thought the game was that bad.
There were some games i thought were pretty bad.
Nothing to make me go on a
cartidge rampage though🤣🤣
Three suggestions, (Rampage) NES vs Sega Master System, (After Burner) NES vs Sega Master System or (NHL games) SNES vs Sega Genesis.
Thanks guys! Another amazing episode! Could you guys do Aero the Acro-Bat 1 and 2?
Acro-bat 1 is def in the list
@@ConsoleWars awesome! Looking forward to it!
Wig at 5:53 looks surprisingly good...
Welcome back gentlemen! I have been missing yall doing these...to this very day I always to comparison between the Snes And Sega Genesis at least 4 to 5 times a day....lol
Dude straight up shat the bed wearing an "Are we doing this?!" T-shirt.
I knew from that Next Episode Hint that it was gonna be Shaq Fu!
I was expecting a good, but not grand episode, which is was I got here.
In spite of Shaq Fu's reputation of supposedly being one of the worst games ever, I've heard here and there that, eh, it's not the worst, there are WORSE games out there.
That's exactly the message I got from you here.
Anyway, what I liked best about this Episode was that it didn't try going all out, with a, how should I say, grand, epic scale presentation, in spite of Shaq Fu's reputation.
Thanks for keeping it simple!
I think 20 to 21 Minutes was just the right length for this Episode, without making things feel draggy and drawn-out!
Good sketches at the beginning, middle and end.
Laughed out loud at the running gag in today's sketch (not gonna spoil it) for all 3 times it happened.
Anyway, another good job guys!
Thanks for keeping things simple, while still delivering a good Episode!
Judging by today's Next Episode Hint, the next Game's gonna be Wolfchild!
Oh heck yeah! I hope it arrive at least in time for Halloween!
Here's an extract from a Comment I made in another video of yours (forgot which one):
"You've done Episode plots about zombies, vampires and Frankenstein's Monster for past Halloween Episodes.
I figure doing a Episode about "Wolfchild" would be a good excuse to do a plot about werewolves."
Looks to me like you guys are actually following my suggestion! Thank you so much!
Man, I am so looking forward to the next Episode!
Seen you there! Laters!!
Glad you enjoyed the episode! Thanks for the kind words
Amazing show guys!
Never unionize.
You write better than anything else
Whenever Sega say "thats it" it remind me of the pigeon from animaniacs
hahaha funny video, guys...kinda sad Shaq didn't make some crazy appearance but oh well it happens...did not expect the ending that you gave it was comedic gold...yeah I kinda figured that version was worse, played it at a friends place once...and even kid me realized how bad this game was...I think one problem was the company that made Flashback weren't used to making fighters so while the games animate great, it REALLY slows down the moves like jumping always has a delay because the characters need to bend their knees and jump and whatnot...poor Shaq, how come every time he puts his name on something it usually becomes meme'd? I mean his second Shaq Fu wasn't that good either and then he was in movies like Kazam...or Steel lol...and there is his whole rap career...I mean it must truly be a talent to be involved in so many things like that and get the results that he does lol...well can't wait to see your next video!
maybe he can on their live stream channel
You could have talked about the Snes supporting more colors in the graphics section because the Genesis seems to use checkerboard patterns or dithering to fake the extra colors of the Snes.
Glad to see you both back! Suggestion for a future episode, dragon Bruce Lee story SNES Vs mega drive! Heres hoping you reach 100k subs soon 😀
they did that one
No we didn't
my mistake. my memory was of another youtube channel
Bruce Lee, The Dragon Story is a pretty decent game. The Atari Jaguar version is the best one by far, though. It would be cool to see them do the SNES vs Genesis versions.
Oh God... I was waiting for you guys to do this one. Loved it. I still have my original Genesis copy. Is it bad? Yes, but it's not THAT bad. Looking forward to the next one! ps: Pit FIghter please?
I never played Shaq Fu but what I expected of it apparently is what it was. Bad. Great video tho!! You guys make really good content and I’m always happy to see anything new from Console Wars! ❤
Thank you!
Konami presents…. A console wars exclusive. Written, edited, directed, by Dan. A Dan exclusive………… a film by Dan.
One reason I love emulation... You can fix the screwy horizontally-stretched SNES aspect ratio for games that need it (most of the library, actually). On RetroArch, you can even save the aspect ratio for specific games and not have to switch back and forth when you play a different game.
FIRST OF ALL:
i was watching this on my TV last night around 3 am, so couldn't comment, just made a like.
Such a good video, i just love the energy and the effort in the sketches and those insane ideas u guys come up with , like that unlucky programmer, who do u come up with such jokes is beyond me.
also, those ''foods'' reminded me of that Indiana jones an the temple of doom.
as for the game, i never got the hate, sure it is bad, but the worst game ever ?
adn guess what ? i have it on GAME GEAR, still do matter of fact, sadly no SNES version for me, but at least i have a version of it.
also the next hint, couldn't solve it, but whatever it is, i am sure i will have the time of ,my life watching u awesome guys.
Keep up the good work and know that ur videos are among my favorite on youtube.
As always, thanks for the kind words!
Delphine Software in the 90's: "This is terrible, we have to create a cinematic adventure game. What a niche genre, it'll surely flop. Oh well, we have to think positive, this is just to fund our next game, a passion project that will combine two things everyone loves: basketball and fighting games. Now that'll be one for the history books, I'm certain!"
Could've been a good skit lol
Can you do Zelda Clones such as StarTropics on Nintendo vs Golden Axe Warriors on Sega please?
PAT, YOUR KUNG FU SOUND WHEN YOU PULLED OUT THE SNES GAME WAS FUNNY
Thanks for granting my request
An odd quirk about this game is that it was designed for PAL formats as 50 Hz and not adjusted for NTSC's 60 Hz. This means it runs about 1/6 faster than intended. At least for Sega, but I assume it wasn't fixed for SNES either.
17:35 Pat shows off his Kung Fu.
I played the Sega version till like 6 a.m.
Years ago when my cousin's were over.
I picked this game up for the genesis for $1 from a comic book store back in 2012, and I gotta say, it was no where near as bad as people say it is. There are SO many worse fighters on the Genesis. All in all, this is actually a pretty fun game -- and as you guys said, there's actually a lot of real effort that went into the graphics and presentation. No idea why it gets the bad rap that it does. I mean... it's nowhere near as good as Michael Jordan Chaos in the Windy City, but it's a perfectly fun game.
Anyway, nice video, fellas. Had no idea there was so much missing in the snes game.
Also, the sequel wasn't a half bad beat-em-up either. I remember it maybe having some bugs and having some kinda cringe "edgey" humor, but being an overall really fun experience.
Ah, Shaq-Fu. I haven't seen a disaster that big since Shaq's rap career. Fun fact, he released 4 albums!
Only now I managed to catch up, but better late than never. "Wolf changing teeth" next
Thank you so much for finally doing Shaq-Fu.
I'm glad they found you, who knows where else this portal could lead to.
Awesome episode... rofl!
Man, I really wonder how this game was SO broken and missing things on the SNES... must be a deadline thing...
Oh, and Wolfchild is the next episode! Nice!
THIS IS CONSOLE WAAAARRRRSSSS!
What-If Shaq Fu in Beat-Em-Up or Plaraform Game, is not Fighter Game
hey, good idea 🤔
Hey, Console Wars! How about you guys do a video on Fatal Fury 2 - Super Nintendo vs. Sega Genesis?
I wish I knew what cropping was when I was younger. I always thought SNES had better graphics because the sprites looked bigger.
Despite being a kid at the time it came out, I was still aware of who made certain games. So I got Shaq Fu on the strength of it being from Delphine because I loved Flashback. Ah well, at least Fade to Black came out a couple years later. Yyyyeah . . .
As a kid I knew Treasure and Working Designs meant they'd be really good!
Fade to Black, good game 👍
Yeahhh baby!!! finally Shaq Fu! Very cool game, played as beast, and knew all the tricks for him! Thanks boys!
Shaq Fu is considered bad only in the us, mostly because Shaq, I had no idea who Shaq was when I played this and my friends and I loved this game. Sure, it's no street fighter but the setting is pretty cool and the graphics are great
I legit got jump scared by that intro lol.
Also wow i didn't even know this infamous game was released on the genesis, sheesh
What part of the intro?
@ConsoleWars I just didn't expect the "console wars" yell to be extra loud this time.
Sorry if jumpscare is an incorrect term to use, im just sensitive to loud sound and it gave me a spook.
Congrats on 100 episodes btw! Nice work
Great video! Have you considered doing an episode on B.O.B.? In addition to being a fairly good game, its plot should give plenty of material for skits.
on the list
@@ConsoleWars Awesome!
I'll wait for another "worst" fighting game comparison for the SNES and Genesis versions of Rise of the Robots
Hi, I really like your channel, you make great videos. I was wondering if it is okay with you guys, could you please do
WWF Royal Rumble (1993) for the Genesis and SNES for an episode. Thank You.
Lmao! I popped big on that snake spot 😂
I'm one of the few people who like Shaq Fu. I bought it for $12 on SNES, when I was a kid. It looks like I need to play the Genesis version, I'll probably like it even more. 😆
Oh hey, next ep is my suggestion! Frickin' sweet!
