I went ahead and purchased this Generac edger after watching this video review. The edger started for the first time after 6 pulls and started on the first pull after that. I bought one that was on display and it was already assembled although incorrectly and with a few adjustments we had it working in no time. It runs fairly quietly and does a fantastic job. Please be advised this review was written right after the first use.
Thank you for this. I used mine for the first time yesterday and I wanted to return it. My yard is new sod that has been growing for 2 months and never edged. The first edge was tough. A lot of mud and rocks to fight. I agree the outside curb edging is almost impossible even when dropping the wheels down. I also had a hard time in curves with this edger. We will see how easy future edges will be. It did however look great afterwards, it just took me a while. It’s also difficult lining up the edger to the sidewalk.
You are welcome. Mine still starts first pull so I like that. I will say I was pushing the edger and found it hard on my hands. I decided to pull it backwards and that made it way easier for me. I may be an idiot edger but I’m thinking maybe backwards is the correct way. Hopefully you like it more on your second edging attempt.
Mclane edgers have an idling feature where you can keep the engine running while the blade is disengaged. I’ve owned one for 40 years and love it. Problem is they are expensive but it looks like you have a very large amount of walkway so it could be a good investment. Also you can find them second hand.
I have owned this machine for just over a year and have used it twice. Thus far I really have no complaints regarding its performance. However I do have one issue with this Generac product. It does not come with or have any information on their website regarding the engine. This is the first time I have purchased a gasoline powered outdoor equipment which did not provide a separate service/operator manual for the engine. After doing considerable online research for this information and finding nothing, I contacted Generac support. The only information they were able to provide to me was a parts list for the 163cc engine and nothing regarding the maintenance/part specs. Had I known this at the time of purchase I would not have done so.
The very first edge is rough for any edger . Believe me , a hand held stick edger is not better. You have to work just as hard to edge plus hold the weight of it at the same time. After you establish an edge ,the walk behind will be a lot more comfortable.
@@woodworkingmcdanielstyle I've had both before being the hand held my 2nd . The walk behind was much more comfortable. I'm in the market to get another one as why I was watching your video. It sucks that the engine can't run separate from blade. Is that really really the case? I'm interested in the generac .
The generac has plenty of power and starts super easy. Really happy with it except for what you mentioned. I know it’s a safety feature but I will probably create a way to hold the handle closed but also easily be able to release it. My hands get tired holding that thing down. Definitely want to be able to walk away without restarting every time.
had the jumper on the wire harness when u assemble it, just leave the jumper on it ,skip the safe handle, the blade shouldn't move until u put the handle in edge action.
Great review. I have loved using a Craftsman push gas edger for 8 years, but replacement parts were impossible to find. As others mentioned, the handheld, unstable, underpowered items were not what I wanted. So I bought one of these from Lowe’s, had to order it. While unboxing it, the fuel tank had been partially crushed, despite all of the great packing material, but Generac aka DR Power, is sending me a new fuel tank at no charge, easy changeout, and Lowe’s gave me a partial credit for the damage. Generac owns DR, the parts and machine are DR, if you call Generac they will just tell you to call DR. DR customer service was awesome, Generac would only hang up on me, multiple times. The instructions are a bit lacking, it’s 1/2 lawyer mandated BS, but not the abbreviated version of what the user wants to know. The oil gauge is identical to the old Craftsman I had. As for the assembly and first use, I had a bit of the same good and bad that you did. The inside curves with a tight radius are awful, it felt like I was destroying the blade on the concrete(straight blade edge, curved concrete). But the stability and power is where this machine will perform. The kill switch handle is something my Craftsman did not have, but if you raised the blade, the belt would stop spinning the blade 13:12 and the motor kept going. Probably some lawsuit and the CPSC mandated the new kill switch, if you wanted to bypass it, just tighten some string, tape or Velcro around it. From my web searching, the only replacement parts like blades, belts, air filters, etc, are only on DR’s website, but they are reasonably priced. I think it will be a worthwhile machine, and I looked at many different models and prices. @captcol8335 thanks you. I think it is a good machine. Starts on the first pull which means a lot to this guy. I just wrapped Velcro around the hand and it does help with hand fatigue

Thanks for the feedback and glad the review was helpful.
For curves I raise blade and raise the rear wheels just of the ground in effect balancing on the front wheels and blade.
Yes I’m starting to get better with it in that way.

@@woodworkingmcdanielstyle same. Pulling it backwards give me a cleaner line. My hand does vibrate a few mins after holding it for a long time.
@markell38115 I decided to put a Velcro strap around the handle to bypass the safety handle feature. That did help with my hand fatigue.

I remember researching and they were top brand. Definitely like that they have that feature! Thank you

It’s probably just some ccheap manufacturer version with the generac name on it. Hopefully we have no issues in the future.
2 notch is enough
Thanks I’m not an edger expert by any means lol
flashlight to see oil ,the oil usually comes up close to the hole be full, should good to go

Ok thanks for that feedback Dean. You give me more confidence I made the right choice getting the walk behind.

19oz according to the manual
Thanks for the info. I’ll update that in the video description. Might be helpful to other people.
What type of oil does it need?
I would have to check the manual but it wasn’t anything special. Probably 10w30. If I find the manual I’ll confirm
