Hi Pete, I mainly use it for sport/street photography and proxy photos. I often leave the foot at home and when I need it, I use an arca Swiss compatible one.
Hey there, Yeah: I own this lens. I use it for sports (acrobatics), events, concerts and a bit of wildlife. I really love this lens. It's has a really nice punchy look. That works really well to make the subject stand out. And superfast autofocus and the f2.8 really helps in low light. I choose fuji because it's so versatile: they have really small camera's and lenses for candid work, but also the bulky ones when you need more performance.
Certified hipster here. This is my absolute favorite lens. I am a concert photographer and use the Tamron 17-70 2.8 along with my Fuji 50-140 2.8 on my XT5. Definitely the perfect trio.
The 50-140 is definitely a dream/wish list lens for me. I'd love to have it for sports. I'm keeping my eyes open! Thanks for the review, have a great weekend!

as always, thanks for the effort and the sharing. i am an appreciative subscriber. i also use my X-T1 and X-T2 to make images of cool cars while i walk the streets of the bronx. (and i'll be 69yr young in july!!!). i usually rely on the fuji f2 primes but i have also been pleased with several of the fuji zooms: 18-55/2.8-4 (OG indeed but still gets the job done), 16-55/2.8 (a really lovely piece of glass) and the 55-200/3.5-4.8 (much better than it's "budget" designation). that said, i really need to get the 50-140/2.8 and give it a real test. BIG thumbs up.
Have had this lens for going on 3 years now. The amount of money and memories it has captured due to it being so versatile can’t be measured. It pretty much lives on my XT3, my biggest gripe is the lens hood but other than that it’s a quality and solid build.
I use my 90mm all the time but 50-140 would be perfect addition to my camera bag outside the studio when i need something more precise and faster than manual vintage stylish lenses i shoot usually on location
photography is my passion. my mom bought me an xt5 i only have 1 lens that is my viltrox 85mm. i am so thankful if i have that lens. i like that lens! Pick me Pete!
I had a 50-140 on loan along with an X-T5 and a 90mm. I wanted to see if it is worth the upgrade from my X-T3. Have to say I was impressed. For the short time I had it the 50-140 it spent the most time on the camera and the images were great. I have always tried to steer away from zooms, but this will be on my list.
This lens seems like a must have for event photography. The compression towards the telephoto end looks incredible. I want to get my hands on one eventually. Also, pick me Pete! 📸
I've been eyeing this lens for awhile now lol. However, i got the Fuji XF 70-300 and have absolutely loved it! It kind of put my purchase of this lens on the back burner. But i still really want to try this lens!
I also have 70-300 lens. Which i don’t feel as a great lens. So now the question “ Should I exchange this with 50-140” is bothering me. What are your thoughts?
When I bought my X-T3 I considered the 50-140 but ended up getting the 55-200 because it was smaller when collapsed and had more reach. I often wonder if I made the right choice. I only use the 55-200 when I want the reach. I would certainly prefer the 2.8 constant aperture and I feel like the 55-200 focuses too slow. Of course I notice the focus speed when taking pictures of my dogs running around and the X-T3 is probably not the best for that in the first place.
Hi Pete! New to Fujifilm system. I have an X-T5 with a 18-55mm 2.8, 75mm 1.2 Viltrox and 27mm2.8 TTArtisans. Was looking for my next versatile lens and your video showed up. Great practical review. It really has helped me make my next purchasing decision. I love portraiture and this seems to be a great choice. By the way..Pick me Pete📸
This is a great lens and I have it also. So amazing lens and I always bring it during my travel and vacation. Although a little bit heavier but the output is great. Thanks for sharing and put me in. Also, pick me Pete! 📸
I’ve been debating between investing in the 56 mm 1.2 or the 50-140 2.8, I definitely think you just helped me choose my next lens, keep up the great work! Pick me Pete 📷
I looked at the 50-140 lens for a long time, but decided on purchasing the 90 F2 instead. Being so much lighter and faster on the lens speed, it fit the bill perfectly for what I do. If I am hiking or doing street photography or portraits, fashion, it’s easy to hand hold versus the 50-140. At 135 mm the 90 F2 is easy to crop if I need too. Carrying this lens daily is a very light load. 🖖
@@simon359 Yep, gotta move your feet! For portraits, the 90mm (135 equiv) is too telephoto for me. I prefer between 85mm-100mm full frame equiv for portraits. It's easier to connect with my subjects.
@@PeteCocoPhoto Don’t disagree, as I’ve dusted off my 56, 1.2 since I got the new update on the XT5, it’s like having a new lens! I use the 90 F2 for street photography, when the subjects across the street, and it becomes a 35 mm. 🖖
Do you find that certain apertures are sharper than others when using the lens at different focal lengths? I own this lens and it seems kind of soft from 2.8 - 4.0 especially in lower light.
I shot the majority of my work with it at f/2.8 and it was tack sharp. It will be a touch sharper when you stop down a bit, but I didn't notice any appreciable difference.
Although it was my reason to switch to the XF system some years ago, it would need soon(!) an substantial update. 8 years old now. So the design is probably 10 years old. 40 fps wasn't on the spec sheet back then.... Sony shows with its 70-200 GM II that big improvements are possible. Better IQ, faster AF.
Yes this is a great point! Perhaps it's in the works but as I mentioned in the vid, I'm not sure how much of a priority this particular focal length is to Fuji since the compact fixed lenses are so popular.
My experience will not match 100% with others LOL. I'm primarily a stills photographer as well, so my reviews focus more on that aspect than the video performance.
I had one for about a month before selling it again cause I wasn't feeling the size, but that's personal preference. I got me some great images with it the few times I made it out with it, but I have to agree that it (as well as the 100-400) is in need of a refresh. Great zooms for their time, but surely there's room to grow a decade later. Both Canon on the EF L lenses and Sony on their entire G/GM zooms made it a point to keep improving their optical formulas and mechanical performance where they could, and I think that's a key point in building long term trust in a camera system. Especially on zooms that are just full of optical compromises by design there's gotta be space to implement experience gained in the last 10 years to make real improvements.
Very true Philipp. Since this lens is sort of an outlier in the Fuji system, perhaps it's not a priority for them. I'm sure they sell many more 56mm 1.2 lenses for example. But this is such a key lens for pros. Plus, lenses also have a much longer shelf life than cameras, but I would also absolutely love to see a new version of this lens too!
I am to shoot a wedding in about a month and this is what I've been eyeing for a long time but was hessitant due to the price. I don't mind the weight as I value quality over anything else. Hope I made the right decision. Will be buying it 2nd hand in a few days. Very excited. PICK ME PETE! 📷
Awesome review! I am new to photography in general and I bought a XT5 as a retirement present for myself and my wife. Your videos are extremely informative, especially about lens choices. And BTW, PICK ME PETE !
Right now there are so many good portrait lenses for Fuji -- the 56mm fuji or sigma, the 75mm viltrox, and the 90mm fuji. Then there's this 50-140 that hits all those focal ranges. Which would you recommend for family portraits? This would be for hikes, travel, and family trips. PICK ME PETE 📷
The downside to the 50-140 is the size. I wouldn't want to travel on family outings with it. The 75 is a great portrait range but if you wanted to take shot of say a few people together, you're going to need to be quite a ways back. So for me, the best of these options would be a 56mm. It's still a portrait lens of course but also compact and bit more versatile. Between the Fuji and Sigma, it just comes down to price. If you don't want to spend $1k, the Sigma is an excellent lens both in build quality and IQ.
