NIGHTWISH is absolutely amazing. I did not expect this!
Something that hasn't been mentioned yet: they actually like each other and genuinely enjoy what they do. They're all having fun on stage, goofing around, playing pranks, engaging with the crowd. Emppu the guitarist is the worst as when he's not playing, he wanders around the stage talking to other band members or sucking back a Corona. Tuomas keeps a bottle of red wine stashed in his keyboard stand. In one concert he poured Floor a glass which she downed. Troy and Emppu are always chatting and I'm guessing that Emppu is pointing out the hot chicks in the front row.
It's a band that is refreshingly free of egos. As an example, what band out there has a lead singer who with some regularity sings backing for the backing singers? It's very common for Floor to drop down in volume when Marko has a bit to sing. If we listen to the harmonies, sometimes Marko predominates, most often it's Floor, and then in some passages they have an equal role. When Marko sings "Kiss While Your Lips Are Still Red" Floor goes and sits in front of the drum kit so as not pull attention away from Marko. She sings backing while sitting down, only getting to her feet at the end. Floor routinely directs the attention of the audience to other band members and pulls back when it's their turn to shine.
They are a refreshing band to watch, especially the onstage story within the song.

Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band, performing in 2013 at Wacken Open Air festival, in front of a 82k+ audience.
You came across a band - the living legend, singing here perhaps the sweetest and most invigorating song from a concert considered by many, over the years, unique, almost unreal. So your enthusiasm is perfectly justified. If you continue to discover Nightwish you will not regret a second.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. Marco Hietala is the Bassist and vocals .And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

Nightwish is one of those rare bands, that does not just reproduce the studio version, they just straight up sound better live period. I discovered them myself recently and immediately bought their compilation studio album Decades, but later on I decided to buy their live albums available at the time and I never listen to the studio albums anymore.
100% Shuriken. I'm really happy that I clicked a live version of the band. It truly gave me perspective on how are they are. After I get into a band I go immediately to their live shows. I think that's where the real magic is made. I loved this song.

I was at this concert not knowing who they are. A friend dragged me to this festival. I don't like crowds but it didn't matter I got lost in the atmosphere of emotions. Ended up crying a lot and feeling transcended in the end. Song Of Myself and Ghost River are my favorites.

I think you're in the US corporate music bubble that controls everything and has all the strings to pull, they are huge from Europe, to China, & South America. USA, largely unknown. Please change that, people are missing out.

Nice reaction! This genre of music is known as Symphonic Metal. Nightwish is the most reacted to artist or band in the history of music reactions videos. FYI:There were 82,000+ in the audience. It is the 5th of 15 songs that NW performed that night. I would recommend either 'Romanticide' or 'Storytime' from the same concert for your next Nightwish reaction.
The singer's name is Floor Jansen. She is the 3rd and still current female lead singer of Nightwish (est. 1996) She had been with the band for little over 10 months at the time of this concert on 03 August 2013, when she was 32. She started performing in the first Metal Band she was in, After-Forever, at the age of 16. After that band disbanded, she started her own band called Revamp. Which was on hiatus, when she received a call from Nightwish to take over the female lead singing duties mid-tour. The rest is herstory. BTW, I'm from GP, just a bit up I-5 from you there in Bardland. Been a NW fan since 2007. Seen them three time. Once in Portland and twice in Seattle, when I was living not far from there.

@@TheMetalMixtape I was at Floor's first show with Nightwish. Which was on 01 October 2012, in Seattle at The Showbox Sodo. Wish I would of kept my tickets stubs and raided the trash can for others. Seen them go as high as $125.00 on ebay!

"WHAT DID I GET MYSELF INTO" Correct assessment of the situation yup xD Also, everyone else got here first and already mentioned it, but I'll reinforce: this entire show is golden, literally every single song from the 2013 Wacken setlist is one you can't go wrong with. Probably the best place to start with this band is to just work your way through this concert and then move forward from there :) You seem to like the bassist a lot, that's Marco Hietala, he's the frontman for his own band on the side as well. Ghost River and Romanticide at this same concert are pretty good showcases for his abilities.

I have 2 live DVD's, 3 Blue Ray's, Showtime Storytime, Vehicle of Spirit, and Decades, live in Buenos Aires. All are GREAT live shows, each with different sets of songs, well worth owning if you can get them.

Found out about Nightwish about a year ago. And down the rabbit hole I went.
Saw that you are in Oregon. I grew up in Eugene in the mid to late 70's. Came back in the mid to late 80's. Left in 1990. Love it up there.

Thank you for your reaction. There have been 3 lead singers, but Floor live is my personal favourite. Any song from Waken you won't be disappointed. Overall all of their songs vary but all have great moments. Looking forward to more Nightwish reactions. 😀

You almost have to do " Ghost Love Score " next. It's almost always reacted to first or second.Anything from the Wacken Concert is a good choice. Let the Army guide you at first. There are almost 6 000 reaction videos to Nightwish songs on YT. Check out "Masterlist Nightwish Reactions". "Ghost Love Score" is the most reacted to song. A fantastic song, like 5 songs in one, and Floor is killing it showcasing her versatility. Her favorite song to sing.
The only thing missing in that song is Marko's, the bassist, vocals, which I think are an essential part of Nightwish. I just love hearing Floor and Marko = Flarko together. They complement each other so perfectly! Floorgasmic and Markolicious!
Marko sings some Nightwish songs solo, or with Floor as his backing vocalist!
What bands has Marko played in? What bands has he NOT played in!!! He always has side projects. He loves Nightwish, but could not be satisfied with just Nightwish. He really lives for the music. The newest is "All Hietala Power Trio". Marko, bass + vocals, brother Sakari aka Zachary guitar, son Miro (18) drums.

@@crystalrainfeather "Flarko" I learned from some other fan, "Markolicious" could be my own, can not be absolutely sure. I came up with Flarkoy. Floor, Marko and Troy all sing together sometimes. A lot on the new album.

@@crystalrainfeather Tuomas used to sing in the early days, I guess there was nobody else to do it. Later he said never again. I saw an old video with Tuomas singing, and I must say it was a good decision. He is human after all, can't do everything perfectly. He plays the clarinet and sax too. He played those in a military band. Military service is mandatory for young men in Finland, optional for young women. After the military service Tuomas, Emppu and Jukka all had short hear for a moment. They looked so different then.
He also plays the pipe organ like a master. His grandpa was the "leader", I don't know the proper term for it in English, of the local congregation in Kitee Finland where Tuomas is from. Jukka, Emppu and Tarja too. So Tuomas propably had the chance to learn to play the pipe organ in the church.
Great reaction, any song from Wacken 2013, Wembley 2015, Tampere 2015 or Buenos Aires 2018 are all worth listening to.

I can’t believe Nightwish hasn’t been on the radio much here in the states more. How is the Heart, from the new album, would be a definite hit. It’s message is an important one considering the things going on in our world today.
Forgive my ignorance, but i too never heard of them until this year. Like RUSH, the legendary band would say, "fool that i was".

They are medium-known, I think the most watched offical video by them (=Elan) got 69M views on youtube. Compared to that, Within Tempation (which they are kind of often compared to) around 76M, Evanescence 765M and Lady Gaga 1.2B

Wacken 2013, Romanticide, Storytime, Ghost River, Song of Myself. Anything live with Floor Jansen in it. The most versatile and powerful voice in Metal. 😄🤘

For a metal head this may be a nice introduction song, close to the main stream metal. They have huge variation in the songs, some are more like folk songs, some are very orchestral, like movie scores, some proge influenced. Hard to say what they wouldn't touch. They're usually called a Symphonic metal band - but they don't let that limit them.
People usually start the reactions from Ghost Love Score, one of their big 3. If the singer impressed you hear, that usually makes folks smitten: she shows her variety of skills there maybe the best - if you fall, your fall will be for her.
The other too biggies I suggest you wait for a while, before you can name the band members, feel a bit for them. That's especially important in the Poet and Pendulum (best version Wembley). It's a suicide avoided by writing it in a song form. So you get more out of the song if you read about the backstory - the only song that kinda needs a bit of pre-knowledge, and familiarity with the guys of the band - so you really feel it.
There master piece so far is The Greatest Show on Earth (Tampere concert). It tells 'only' about life, life on Earth mainly. You don't have to read something before listening, just beware that at places there are very scientific concepts, mainly from evolutionary biology and physics - having captions on might help.
So maybe after you have about half a dozen Nw songs in your reaction list checked, you're still interested (almost all are), and you know the names of the band, you can't take on the big 2, and really get them. Well - TGSoE you could get right away, just it's like eating the cake first :)
Now, at this point any Wacken concert (like this video) songs will do service for you - you've only got about 120 songs to choose from, Nw started in -96 :) And there is perhaps 1 we could call a failure, one of the early songs: Nymphomaniac Fantasia. And some other early songs were sung in Finnish (metal ofr not), plus the band wasn't so decided yet to for metal mainly.
If you'll take that GLS mentioned above, you'll be where most folks are after having heard their 1st Nw song. The singer Floor shows her variety their, she just - shines. Warning: most people leave the song with multiple Floorgasms :)

Hey brother! Just some info about the drummer, Jukka (pronounced "yooka") Nevalainen:
In 2014, after the end of the Imaginarum World Tour (2012/2013), Jukka had to step down as Nightwish's drummer, due to an ongoing, 3-year battle with insomnia.
On 15 July 2019, he made his departure "official," but he has not left the band, staying on and taking care of band business since he stepped down. However, last year, before COVID became a thing, Jukka did play at a couple of European shows -- and he _really_ wants to come back and get back on the kit! I consider him to be the best drummer alive today -- because he always showed his emotion when he played.
I would recommend the following Nightwish songs from Wacken:
1) Dark Chest of Wonders. Best. Opener. Ever. Recorded.
2) I Want My Tears Back. Who says that metalheads can't dance an Irish jig every once in a while? Lol
3) Ghost Love Score. Literally, the song that has brought many, many fans and reactors to the Nightwish Army, and is the most reacted-to performance in RUclips history.

This band is from Finland.
Tuomas is the keyboarder, Songwriter, composer.
Marco is playing the bass and doing also the vocals. He is very versatile and an awesome singer as well. You might watch „The Islander“ from Tampere to experience this.
Emppu is playing the guitar. He can shred it but he always does exactly that much, that is required by the song.
Kai (also Wintersun) is now at the drums and replaced the original drummer Jukka (whom you saw here) who had stop playing the drums due to health issues. But he still is with the band. Julka was a perfect drummer and showman, Kai is a perfect drummer and a machine and beast at the drums.
Last but not least there is Floor, the Dutch singer. She is the bands third singer after Tarja (operatic) and Annett from Sweden (pop/rock). She can sing really everything from opera over pop/ rock to growls
This gig was at Wacken. Wacken is THE metal festival worldwide. Nightwish were one of the headliners in 2013.
It is in the north of Germany in a rural area. Therefore the bullhead with flames is the Wacken symbol. There are more than 80.000 metalheads having a big party each year.

From the new album there are for obvious reasons no live sessions so far. For all songs there are lyric videos, except for „Noise". But maybe you'll give some songs a try as well. It's an awesome album. Definitely not an "easy" one with a lot of really unique songs, different from what is "typical" for Nightwish. Floor said that she was really challenged to sing the songs that Tuomas wrote for her. Knowing her abilities, you can imagine that they are "special“. „
-->"Noise" is probably the most "typical" song and the only one with "real video". The video is great as the song itself
--> "Tribal" is the heaviest one and Kai, the drummer, had to change his normal setup to be able to play it.
--> "Shoemaker" (about Eugene Shoemaker) is such a heavenly and epic song with the possible epic ending.
-> „Pan“ is just an amazing ride. When it starts you for a moment think you‘re listening to Floors husbands band „Sabaton“. In the song you‘ll be reminded to „Tribal“ and „Noise“.
-> Procession“ a rather calm song with so amazing vocals by Floor
--> "Harvest" is so different with Troy singing, that you will wonder if you're listening to Nightwish.
-> „Endlessness“ is Marcos song and shows his great voice.
--> "Music", „How's the Heart", ... are really cool songs as well. Of course.
The album challenged Floor as singer, which is not easy to do, as she is one of the best and most versatile singers in the world.

Beste Zangers Just in case (which I can really recommend) you're going to do "Beste Zangers" make sure you take the clips posted by "jenniezelf" on RUclips as she has also included the talking / interviews before and after with english subtitles. The concept of the show is, that on one day all singers sing a song for one of them.
It's a song that is by that singer or a song that means a lot for him / her. So it is very interesting to get to know the story behind each song. And it will help to understand the reactions of the other singers. Floor is singing there in German, Dutch, Spanis and English. Her "Phanom of the Opera" duet with Henk Poort is legendary.

* Backstory for „Poet and the Pendulum“
Tuomas (the keyboarder and songwriter) was in depression after the split from their first singer Tarja. Man, you literally made my night!!!! so i am from NJ.......been listening to NIGHTWISH since the quarantine started.......so people comment that they don't hear NIGHTWISH or a lot of other great metal bands from this part of the world on AMERICAN radio......and please dont get mad at me for saying this but i am soooooo happy that American radio stations DO NOT play those bands.!!!! The radio stations here in the US kill some of the bands by overplaying and over exposure........even METALLICA could not get air time on American radio for a long time......James Hetfield said that he was upset about that but in hindsight it was a good thing..........let the people talk and they will be the bands voice and spread the word!!! great reaction, i love how you immediately recognized the talent level and great sound.

Nightwish is a band that has achieved a wide range of acclaim in their careers.
The band's composer genius, Tuomas Holopainen, is considered by many to be the best composer of our time. The world’s largest metal music magazine (but the second largest rock music magazine) “Metal Hammer” as well as Iron Maiden founder member Steve Harris agree. When Steve Harris lists the top 10 albums, the first two are from Nightwish! So, he is a Nightwish fan... :D
Tuomas and Floor both wanted to become biologists, it was a dream of the future for them at school age. Tuomas even got into university, but after four months of studying, making music won.
But three different animal species have got their scientific name associated with the band! Two new discovered insects, one named after Tuomas and the other after Floor. And in addition, in the spring, a small-scale fossil (lived 150,000,000 years ago) is named after the band.
For their new album (released in April 2020), Nightwish was allowed to shoot promo images at the Natural History Museum in London. They were given 4 hours to be “alone” throughout the museum taking pictures. No other band has ever received a similar permission.
Nightwish has so far released 9 studio albums and six of them have an orchestra involved. The London Symphony Orchestra has been their partner since 2004 (when they made their fifth album "Once"). The orchestra in the background of the concerts is thus the London Symphony Orchestra. Playback ... Nightwish plays live on it and Tuomas controls that background music. It’s not very easy to play live on a backing tape because one single mistake can’t be made!
In London, their contact is Pip Williams, who is a record producer, arranger and guitarist, best known for producing albums for Status Quo and The Moody Blues and acting as well as supervising the orchestra parts and orchestra arrangements for Nightwish. Other collaborators include Shirley Bassey, Richard O'Brien, Dr. Feelgood, Barclay James Harvest, Bucks Fizz, Kevin Ayers, Geordie and Uriah Heep (Sonic Origami). He also produced and co-wrote a number of tracks on Sweet's 1980 album, Waters Edge, and worked with their singer, Brian Connolly, on a number of his solo efforts. So, Pip Williams was the person who organized the London Symphony Orchestra as the background orchestra for Nightwish and helps Tuomas to reconcile Nightwish’s music with them.
Pip Williams has told the following story from Nightwish’s first recording session in London. Usually the orchestra’s musicians always leave home when the recording was made that day. After all, they are just employees there. But it was different with regard to Nightwish. Many times in the evening, after the recording session, those musicians came to the control room to listen to what had been played during the day and what kind of music the members of Nightwish make. They liked Tuomas ’compositional work, which was not similar to many other rock or pop bands they had worked with before. This was something completely new to them. Pip said that this behavior from those musicians was something "abnormal," something they usually never did.
Tuomas himself recalled the following from that first recording: "When the last night came and everything was recorded, I went to the studio room to thank the orchestra's musicians. They all stood up and applauded me. It was one of the greatest moments of my life."
So, if we fans like them, we’re not the only ones. They receive different recognition for their skills and competencies, from many different directions. And they really deserve it all! They are really worth it.

Will take you longer than a week love... welcome to the rabbit hole. The Nightwish Army is coming. The Waken 2013 concert is a primary point of introduction for many people. Nightwish was the headlining act and the recordings made are superb. It was also lead singer Floor Jansen's introduction to the fan base. She had replaced Anette Olzon on the tour(to support the album "Imaginaerum" released in 2011) the preceeding year and this was the climax of that tour. (For more about that replacement see the documentary "Please Learn the Set List in 48-hours" available on RUclips.) Floor's first album with the band was the 2015 album "Endless Forms Most Beautiful" and the recent release in April of 2020 of "Human :||: Nature", but Floor's vocal capabilities mean that she is more than able to handle Nightwish's full playlist. With Nightwish, live is always best.

You have no idea what you're getting into! This Wacken 2013 concert will not disappoint. By the way, the keyboardist/composer/songwriter, Tuomas Holopainen, is considered the Mozart of metal. He also uses a full orchestra in the background, which is why this is considered symphonic metal.

I've known about this band since the late 90's early 2000's and I find it so hard to imagine people not having heard of them before. Makes me wonder what rock you all have been living under. lol
I wonder why Nightwish isn`t well known in the US, as it is one of the best bands, always on point, live better than studio. Livin in Germany I could kick my ass, that I didn`t go to Wacken 2013. The concert was like once in a lifetime experience. Floor is the best vocalist in the world. I recommend Storytime, Ghost Love Score, Ghost River, Deep chest of wonders, Song of myself, Last ride of the day. For proof of variety Sleeping sun (Tampere show) and Gethsemane (Buenos Aires show). Have fun.

The music is called symphonic metal and is very populair in Europe and South America. The band is from Finland and founded in 1996. So far the band has had 3 vocalists
1 Tarja Turunen (Finish) pure opera voice also very good live. (until 2005)
2 Anette Olzon (Schwedish) more pop style. fine in the studio but not good live. (until 2012)
3 Floor Jansen* (Dutch) (current). * She is the vocalist you saw in this clip. She has a classical vocal background education and can sing any style she likes from jazz to opera high to growling low. Believe me when i tell you you have not even scratched the surface yet of what she's capable of.

Marco Hietela (the viking with the long beard (Bass and vocals)

The clip was shot a few months after Floor jointed the band right in the middle of their US leg of the world tour. They asked her to join after tensions between the previous (Anette) vocalist and the rest of the band had rissen so high that they fired her. With close to a year still to go to complete the tour, and their next concert planned 2 day later they, needed a replacement fast. They called Floor because she had toured with them when she was part of the support bands"After Forever" and later "Revamp" on several occasions and they were quiet impressed by her vocals (who would not be?). She only had 2 days, including a flight from the Netherlands to the US, to learn the setlist and only had one rehearsal with the band a couple of hours before her first show and nailed it. Since they were making a documentary about the world-tour a lot of what happened was recorded. The documentary is called "Please learn the setlist in 48 hours" (ruclips.net/video/vhExkmWKMEU/видео.html )
As a next song to take a look at i would recommend "Ghost love score" from the same show that was a introduction to many reactors. This was also the song that Nightwish fans created a whole new word for after hearing the new closing section that Floor added to the original version. We call it a Floorgasm. ;-) But believe me the term is applied to many of her vocals skill and performances. :-). I read somewhere that the term was officially added to English dictionary but i never checked it to be honest.
