I bought a 55 Chevrolet 2dr hardtop back in 1969. It was legal, drove it everywhere, perfect body and glass, no bondo or any cracks in the glass. I paid $100
That is a nice 55, is going to be an expensive Cruze with gas prices now day’s. Back in my high school days I bought a 1956 2 door hardtop, I paid 500.00 and drove it for years, I love those Belair 50s classics. Now I drive a five window 53 Chevy truck.
from a 55 guy. nice belair hardtop. maybe, 283 ,or intake swapped ,3 speed with overdrive, change the aftermarket gauges. very nice all orginal car. keep it that way.
Wow!!! What an amazing survivor car! What an engine combo! Definitely an early built hot rod! The block is '56 and later with the canister oil filter, the pan is '56 and later too. The exhaust manifolds are from a '55-'56 265 passenger car. The intake/carb set up could be '56 Corvette or '57 270 hp and up. Hard to tell if this was an original power pac 265 car with dual exhaust and outside the frame rail mounted 3/8" fuel line. That Impala Wheel was the hot ticket back in the early days on these tri fives. I hope it is cleaned up, fixed and driven like a true survivor car! Glad to see it is in your Dad's care, he seems to really know his stuff! Great, great find and best wishes on puting this one back on the road!
Nice find. It's got the 3 OD. Pull the overdrive handle out to lock out the overdrive. That is why it wants to freewheel. I have 2 of them. My first one came out of my 63 235 Impala that I used to drive, and another one I salvaged and they used them on 283s back then and it looks like that was the power package that came out in 56 and later. Nice rare item! Leave it as a cruiser. It will get great mileage if it has the normal 370:1 rear end. Look for a P on the pumpkin.
Just Subscribed.Thats a Muncie non syncro three speed. The standard trans was a 318 Muncie. Yours with the Overdrive is a 319 Muncie. Factory overdrive cars came with 411 rear gears. The overdrive is Free wheeling. that why it turns only in one direction. Thats a unique 55 not original however the modfications it has are very desirable! 55 chevys are my Favorite Tri five. We have video of our 55 on our channel.
That is one in a million! Fantastic find. It definitely is not a 1955 265 engine, because they did not have a full flow oil filter. I believe it was well into the 60s before they put a bolt in the end of the crankshaft. One really good upgrade on these is to swap the front wheel hubs with mid 60s. That gets you up to tapered roller bearings. The original ball bearings are maintenance intensive and fragile.
The overdrive transmission has a one-way roller clutch in the rear. That is what gives torque freedom to allow the overdrive to shift once you take your foot off the throttle. The two electrical devices on the transmission are the overdrive solenoid that makes the shift and the governor that prevents overdrive from engaging below about 28 mph. The 3 speed OD transmission is a great setup. FYI, with the overdrive cable pushed in, the overdrive is active and it will shift in above 28 mph when you let up on the gas. Pulling the cable out, locks out overdrive. You only pull the cable out with the vehicle standing still. Pulling it out while moving can easily damage the OD unit.
I had one. If you were moving forward, you had to accelerate and take it out of overdrive. Then, you could pull on the overdrive lock out without damaging the overdrive. BTW I still have 2.
That is stock and proper set up the dual quad set up was the highest hp set up. Except fuel injection. It was only available with three speed standard shift on the column. That is a super rare car. Keep it stock. Keep it out of the snow and salt. The engine is a 265.. Jim BCC AZ
Why don’t you have the radiator boiled and Rod out. Save it for originality? An after thought would be that radiator shops are hard to find in rural counties.
The original engine for that car was the 265 with the bypass oil filter. Someone swapped the thing with the six. How do I know? Easy. V8 emblems under the tail lights.
The old ‘55 Nomad I recently acquired was also an overdrive car. The original engine/tranny are long gone but I think those cars came with 4:11 rear ends. That’s a nice car, if you got it unstuck and running quite the find.
No we didn't get it turning over and the car ended up going to a new shop to get a bbc and trans not sure I wish we could have finished it but run out of time I will see if I can get up date video
Three years you should be driving it to the car shows . Looks like a real nice project...and one day in the future the wife will be asking " honey, do you have another girlfriend on the side?"😁👍Yup!
I'm going to guess $15,000, To $20,000 The 2 dr hard top brings the big bucks. Lot of 4 drs and 2 dr post cars. not many sport coup 2 dr hard tops.. Nice car. I recommend a complete frame off restoration
I want this car , stop doing things to it ,I want to do that , how about it , get ahold of me ASAP soon 👍 BigAl California praise Jesus Christ grace amen 🙏

Absolutely right. If you flat tow it, pull the driveshaft or the trans will twist right off.
Cool man getter done

WOW!! WHAT A CAR!!!

53 was the first 6 with a oil pump
I think the front wheels had rollers on 57 and later.
@@monadking2761 Front wheel bearings? The tapered roller bearings didn't come into use until 61.

joe you are on top of your game.
I had one. If you were moving forward, you had to accelerate and take it out of overdrive. Then, you could pull on the overdrive lock out without damaging the overdrive.
BTW I still have 2.
That's a fantastic hardtop. Dual quads and batwing are big money. I have a playlist on my channel of budget upgrades and tech tips for tri 5 Chevys
I have to keep you I mind thanks
Nice car; clean her up!
That's rare for it to be in that shape.
Nice car. I wouldn't consider it rust free it's rust coated but hasn't blown through.
That is stock and proper set up the dual quad set up was the highest hp set up. Except fuel injection. It was only available with three speed standard shift on the column. That is a super rare car. Keep it stock. Keep it out of the snow and salt. The engine is a 265.. Jim BCC AZ
That is not the original engine A dual quad setup wasn't offered in 55
And the 265 had no oil filter on the block.
Don't lose that batwing air cleaner! those things are pretty rare.
Why don’t you have the radiator boiled and Rod out. Save it for originality? An after thought would be that radiator shops are hard to find in rural counties.
Have not got that far still working on the engine
