- I went to Nepali Kitchen I Pokhara to try some authentic Nepali food. The owner was a hilarious dude who showed us how to eat momos and other Nepali dishes that I unfortunately cannot remember the name of.
I thought I was in danger at more than one point in the meal but I’m here to tell the tale.
It’s one of the best authentic Nepali restaurants in Pokhara.
Peace and love.

Bitter gourd is great to control high blood pressure. Its very healthy.
You’re supposed to mix enough daal to make the flavours a little milder. That is why Nepali daal has very mild flavour with very few spices. The food that goes along with rice is usually a little intense because mixed with the rice and daal you’re supposed to bring down the flavours to your own palette.
Here’s the way you do it:
Mix some curry and some daal with your rice. Dont just mix them lightly but rather mush some of the curry/vegetables/ meat with your fingers. This brings all the flavours really well. Thats the reason nepali food tastes better with hands. Then, take a little bit of achar and put a drop on one morsel of food. You dont have to mix it well like everything else(personal preference). It brings a great strong refreshing, usually tangy taste to the food. You can eat a small portion of achar by itself in between morsels of rice too.
Mistakes:
1.Foreigners usually eat rice with all the vegetables and achar and meat together without the daal. That becomes too spicy.
2.Drinking the daal by itself. Daal does not have alot of flavor because its supposed to go with rice and curry. By itself its nothing interesting.
3. Mixing wayy too much veggies/meat/achar with too little rice. You gotta find the balance. Experiement and find your perfect mixture.
You nailed it too deep..
He should pin this asap !
yup, explained it like a true asian.
Explained nicely.
Wow lovely! This is the best English language explanation for how we Nepali prefer to eat Dal Bhat Tarkari. 🙏
No worries bro…lot Nepalese don’t know how to eat it that includes me 😅. I can’t eat Dhido without chewing🫣😂
😂😂
Truee

They mix Sichuan peppercorn to aachar. It gives unique taste to aachar, has anti inflammatory properties and good for gut health. You only need to add small amount otherwise it numbs your mouth too much.
Gundruk is made out of fermented and dried mustard leaves which contains probiotic and is great.
Nepali food is very balanced and healthy. You don't necessarily need non-vegetarian dishes to enjoy Nepali food. Its not very spicy.
The dindo( the dough) you are eating is nutritious and filling and one of the reasons you don't chew is cause it sticks to your teeth. You supposed to eat it hot by dipping into sauce by the way.
The green vegetable that you liked is nettle leaves(great source of antioxidants), which is first boiled and a mixture of turmeric, salt and garlic is fried in hot oil and poured over to it after to give some flavour. People cook it in different ways.
Love the way you talk and explain everything . I would’t mind watching you as a food critic if you ever bring out a food show.
This was so wholesome to watch 😊♥️ i hope you have a wonderful time here in Nepal.
I am a Nepali who loves dhido and i have no qualms in admitting that I chew and savour its flavours before swallowing. So don't worry buddy, the way u like it is the best way to have it 🙂
I used to mush it with my tongue instead of chewing. But i m very used to just shallowing it now.
The tingling or tongue numbing things you eat is Acmella oleracea, also called toothace plant because it reduce severe tooth pain within a minute or soo, and it's local name is " marethi ".
Thank-you
Thank you for the info, I was wondering about that flower the whole time
Thanks! Was about to Google the english/scientific name for what we call "Marratthi".
Your description of flavours about the food are soo acurate .I can say that as a Nepali

That acidic flower that you just ate is a legend of plant in Nepal. Its 'Marathi' generally found in hills and lower mountains of Nepal and the chutney without marathi is no chutney. Enjoy mate!
The flower you taste is Spilanthes. It is called Maruti in Nepali. It is a herbaceous plant and a pickle is incomplete without it. Sometimes we use it to treat stomach ache.
I also didn’t know about this herbaceous plant. What part of Nepal is it popular in?
@@kantynory2840 It is found especially in hilly areas, it is also found in Terai, but it is popular all over Nepal. it's popularity is so huge even song went viral in Nepal. Song name is "Rum Rum Marauti"
@@spreadhappiness123 rum rum maruti
temro rupai karuti...
Is this the song if I'm not wrong???
@@babyfaced7538 yes, absolutely you are right😍
It's a technique to shallow " didho ".
Being a native Nepalese , i am about 25 years old but still i am also haven't learned to swallow 😂😂.
I can feel that....😅😅
Welcome to pokhara.
Hopefully, you guyz are enjoying at this monsoon rainy season. (Not the best weather for traveling)
Lovely, cute as well as funny content, loved it ❤️
Its called 'dhido'. Its a traditional dish. U are supposed to take very small amount dip it in curry then achar then shallow it. U dont chew it because it will get stuck in your teeth. Just take a very small amount. U will get used to it latter on.
Edit:- bitter is considered to be healthy. Also eating bitter things means u are a matured adult. Which is why we eat bitter melon. Personally i dont like it but my parents really love them.
That black seeds i think its called shichuan pepper in english, we call it timur. Really common ingredient in achar.
I was watching your premier and I thought that it is too short video and at the end of the video, I realized that your video was about 20+ mins.
I really enjoyed watching your video. And I mostly like your video, showing details about Nepali foods and culture.
God bless you guys ❤️🇳🇵
loved it !!🖤
"You just don't know until you mo:mo" got me 🔥😂❤️
I'm definitely using this dialogue everytime I 'mo:mo' now
This is not just budget travelling. I always wanted to see a Western dude experiene that battrey acid plant lol. They nailed it, almost all of the authenticity there is. You guys are perfect duo. I could watch endless hours of yous. Thank you for your time slowing down and describing it the best way
This that really it's name?
@@The_gossipbees no, i think its called marathi or something
Dhido(the gooey stuff prepared from millet, buckwheat or maize flour) is a rural delicacy. it is supposed to keep you full and energized for longer period that's why rural folks prefer it. As villagers spend a lot of time outdoors working in the fields they don't have time for snacks. Thus they prefer meals that keeps them full for longer period of time. FYI most nepalese living in the urban areas also don't know how to eat it.
Bitter Guard is very beneficial for your heart. It helps to regulate your blood pressure ( good for high blood pressure) and also helps to reduce cholestrol level in your body. In some places people even make juice out of it and drink as a detox juice. Gundruk is fermented mustard leaf ( specially they ferment it and dry it so that they can preserve it) for the winter times when there is not much green vegetable available.
Lovely video mate. Are you missing mash and pie, fish and chips? Right, this is exactly how i felt when i tried mash and pie for the first time with my british mate. He laughed on me very hard🤣
Enjoying these vids..especially when ya man spontaneously does mick gagger impressions
A watched all ur videos ,we need more videos of Nepal God bless you two
Love your vlog bro n having lots of fun n interesting along with comedy while eating dhido
11:00that was timur(schwan paper) floweris called murethi they both use in nepali chatney adds umami flavour and make certain numness in mouth too.
Timur is a nepali variety of Sichuan pepper, timur is has a darker taste but basically the same thing
That man is crazy teacher😂 its absolutely fine to chew and eat it✌️
This is the funniest video. Your expression is just like my kids did when they tried it for the first time.
wow!! guys what is this place called? looks like super authentic traditional village food.. what a find!!😍
Beautiful video 🤩😍
Lots of love from Nepal broda🖤☮️
Amazing video.
@ True Budget Travelling ‘DHIDO’ is Nepalese Cultural food which is an organic, hygienic food as well but most of the Nepalese and Tourists didn’t know the importance of it. Thanks for you to the promote of Nepalese food ‘DHIDO’ guys.
really appreciated restaurant and owner...he was super informative with typical nepali restaurant and hygienic too
u r too good u r doing very good keep it up
That acidic zincy thing you say, used to be one of my favorite spices. Miss it!
That's funny ! anyway it was your first experience brother . 😆
Good vid. This is the second video I've seen where you say "unami" which I find mildly amusing.
I think I’ve been saying it wrong for 27 years.. 😂😂
GREAT CONTENT..
The restaurant owner was so friendly.
Namaste wonderful couple. We are happy to meet you on our trekking shop. Thank you so much. See you again.🙏🙏
DHIDO WITH LOCAL CHICKEN SOUP. YUMMMM MY MOUTH IS ALREADY WATERING 🤤
12:35 It is called Marahathi (मरहठी) or Akar (अकर) in Nepal. I guess the most common English name for it is "Toothache plant".
Great video
Thank for visiting my home country Nepal 🇳🇵 🙏🏻🙏🏻enjoy ❤️❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻from 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇳🇵🇳🇵
I’m Nepalese but never tired that dhido so don’t be surprised brother hopefully we can see your Annapurna vlog soon
The thing about that brown gluey thing (dhido) is usually for old people without teeth so usually they swallow it because they don't have teeth to chew
Love the fact u love Nepal so much. 😁
Enjoy your time khaire mate❣️
That black thing you ate is Sichuan peppercorns.
Dhido with meat is one of the best food brother, you melted my mouth.
Restaurant owner is cool asf😁❤❤😁 n u guys just making good vibe around❤❤✌✌
Love Ur info to nepal
Your right I have hemp seeds in my muesli every day. Important for vego all the essential oils
The tingly sensation that u got is from the black pepper or known as TIMMUR in Nepali it hits your tongue slowly and numbness sensation not the flower
Taste of dhido come when sallowing not chewing...the taste of pure millet ...love dhido... #respect nepali food
the flower you try is using for herbal medicine it also good for control blood glucose ..
You ate dhido,? I can't believe it, dude. The last time I ate didho was when I was 7. Kudos to your enthusiasm to learn a new culture. I should start eating toast with Vegemite from now onwards, now that you've set the standard.
"He just moved the table?" 🤣🤣
Awesome content bruh!
Also a little advice it's "umami" not "unami"
The black seed is Sichuan pepper mr Ramsey uses all the time in UK.. it’s origin is China the Nepali traders brought it from Tibet-Lhasa
As kid I used to love that flower, I would eat so much 😅 it can be used as replacement of Sichuan Peppercorns
I think the reason you don't chew but swallow Dhedo is, it stays in your tummy for a longer time. It keeps you full all day so you do not have to eat very often which also keeps you warm up in the mountain.
You guys found really funny guy😂😂
Love from Pokhara
No... dumplings were originally from nepal..later it went to tibet and all over the world...i suggest you to check out the history of dumpling
When I was kid I too don’t like now is my favorite, keep on trying u will learn it. After you also will be dhido lover😊😊😊
You are eating Nepals national food Dhido Enjoy you meal bro🤘
Nice hospitality
Helpful person
His Restaurent is in pokhara lakeside street no 6 just infront of hotel temple tree
you are very good hearts bro love your videoes
You see before he swallow he is kind of using his hand to make it round/slippery so it’s easier to swallow.
He dips it in the curry and uses hand to make it kind of slippery so that it can be easier to swallow.
Ha ha!!! Hemp seeds are crunchy but gives an aromatic flavour when used in making pickle, curry and . . .....
Gundruk is fermented greens and meant to be really healthy. I personally had no idea we were meant to swallow dhido, I’ve always chewed it. Love watching your videos and your enthusiasm with our culture. Hope you enjoy Kathmandu , will be an experience to remember.
P.S ..this account belongs to my 6 yr old hence the weird Roblox profile pic 😬
pleases go nepalgunj kohalpur these is beautiful place i am from kohalpur
It's your first time eatin 'dhedo' so it must be hard to swallow. But in the past Himalayan people used to eat those due to lack of rice production and lack of transportation. That is why Himalayan people are so stronger and can climb hills as well as everest too. For us nepali Dhedo is like a nepali national food because that helped us survive in the past.
And haha your reaction were hilarious 😂😂
Not like a national food.
It is indeed adressed as National food.
''Gundruk-Dhido''❤️
1:26 - Thats what she said!! 😂😂 iykyk. Jokes aside nice video man
Love from Nepal
If you order Dal Bhat in Nepal then you get unlimited refills for free. Pay for one plate but gives you many refills.😊😊That's our hospitality in Nepal. Enjoy your stay in Nepal. 😊😊We all hope you visit all part of Nepal and enjoy different places and food from those region.😊😊You can eat Mo: Mo: on lunch daily too.😊😊
For those of you who don't know.
So the concept of eating dhido is to first make it small round shape according to your mouth and then dip it in some curry so that it will become smooth and swallow it..
Im excited. I really love watching your vlogs.
Thanks for the support 🙏
@@Craig_Black You will always get support because you also supporting for Nepal 🇳🇵
