Alejandro Rodríguez I don't know if I'd say he looks "gaunt", I think that's going a bit far, but the guy is 46, has been smoking since he was a teenager, had a 5-year period of hardcore drug use in the 90s, and who knows if he eats healthy or exercises regularly. Plus he's recently been going through a nasty divorce. All things considered, the fact that he looks as good as he does is pretty impressive.

I've been 'researching' musicians from the '90's for a writing project - interested in the 'stage persona' of musicians & the reaction to/interpretation by the fan base. John Frusciante fans are, by far, the ones that make me want to abandon the project. I get it - he's talented - I'm a fan & love his music. No wrong being a fan of people who create music we love. I also get the psychology that draws us to the 'Phoenix rising from the ashes' backstory. As an ICU RN that's dressed the stumps of arms removed at the shoulder due to infections from skin popping drugs, I'm particularly impressed by whatever bionic, Keith Richards-esque, genetic make-up Frusciante has that allowed his body to make such a stunning recovery. But the 'John is the purest form of life,' Jesus references & demands to 'return' literally make me sad for Frusciante, not as a celebrity, but as a human being. People are not products. Maybe try to emulate the 'purest form of life,' and just enjoy the music.

+vlv rvlc it's definitely not biographical nor is it a piece about the technical or historical aspects of music - I'm not in either business. It's a creative writing piece - mostly about loneliness and human connection (real and perceived) and the beautiful things in this world that cause us to gravitate toward certain individuals. I suppose it is also a little bit of a statement on celebrity worship. Really, just me writing for me and working nights through my own thoughts. No plans to publish.
+Envy Trust me, I get how music reaches people. The whole reason I've been looking at Frusciante in the first place is for that exact reason...one of his solo songs incites such a guttural emotional reaction in me, I can barely listen to it...and I'd wager that the intended meaning of the lyrics aren't even close to what it makes me think about/feel. But being expected to serve a life sentence playing the same 20 songs forever...from my very limited knowledgeable, is about the most un-Frusciante think you could ever wish on a person. You're probably correct, but it still makes me sad for the guy and music in general.
+Envy Interesting - I know very little about his career path. Or the career path of any musician, tbh. That's never really been something I've been interested in. Until I got this flippin writing project in my head, that is. And really I'm just looking for some historical accuracy...which has lead down a very disturbing rabbit hole. I kind of think it actually convolutes how I feel about/hear music. Either way...good for him...i believe that a lot of the time it goes against human nature and societal convention for an individual to do what makes them truly happy. There's a lot of bullshit in life that keep us barricaded and stagnant. So if Mr. Frusciante has the spirit to get past that...I support that shit any day.

No. Actually, most of his tattoos were damaged after his heroin abuse, including the RHCP logo tattoo.
I know his arms tatoos were damaged, but his wrist tatoo was fine. and now it isnt
As others have said, it's from when he was severally addicted to heroin and was injecting himself incorrectly for years. Eventually his arms were covered in infected abscesses and he had a bunch of skin grafts done, meaning many of his tattoos became warped or covered completely.
If he would have wanted to delete it, he would have deleted at all... Don't you think?
