You know what's wild? With most top-shelf drummers, you eventually find the limit to their "bag of tricks." You listen to them over and over again, and you kind of lose that sense of awe that you had when you first discovered their playing.
      But not Dave.
The other night, I watched an entire concert that he did with Mike Stern and Chris Minh-Dokey. I had good studio headphones on, so I could hear pretty much everything Dave was doing. And I gotta say... the guy still, to this day, after thirty-some-odd years of listening to him, makes me go, "How in the hell does he do everything so RIGHT?!" It's like he never, ever plays the wrong thing. He has some kind of superpower that places practically everything he plays right in the sweet spot; not just in terms of WHAT he plays, but also HOW he plays it.
I really despise people using the word "genius," because they tend to use it whenever they feel like it. But when it comes to Dave, that word starts looking pretty good.
      The guy's just special.

In the 90s he really came into his own and had a very Latin jazz approach going on

Steve Gadd played on the original recording (Three Quartets), so that makes perfect sense :)

Quartet #1. Amazing record, one of my favorites ("Three Quartets"). No wonder Dave has a Gadd-y feel here, it's Dr. Steve on the original :)

Lol, playing in a similar vein doesn't make you a "copy". Weckl has his own sound.
