Wuppertal Zoo proves how well it works to operate free or direct contact with protected contact in parallel. This has the advantage that the elephants can be placed in both free-contact husbandries and in husbandries with so-called protected contact.
The European Association for Zoos and Aquariums (EAZA) has now advocated that all elephants kept within the European conservation breeding program should be trained on protected contact. The decisionmakers believe that this would simplify inventory management. The member zoos are forced to follow this decision.
Wuppertal Zoo has a long and successful history of caring for elephants in free contact. As a world leader in breeding, many Wuppertal elephants have already been given to other zoological gardens. There were never any problems with management, precisely because the animals get to know both forms of contact.
There is no disadvantage for the animals in getting to know both forms of contact. You can see how much Kimana enjoys working in protected and free contact with the carers. In addition, getting to know both forms of contact allows a larger behavioral repertoire. Young animals only learn the form of protected contact later because free contact offers significant advantages in caring for young animals.
