    • @OrchidsByAlexander
      @OrchidsByAlexander  Год назад +1

      Thank you. Pests are very complicated to fight with for those who live in Europe or America because insecticides are banned for mass selling. I recently had a mealybug attack and it was bad. I used malathion against thrips and it worked well many times but this time mealybug did not die after many times i used it. I used hand soap, 100% rubbing alchohol and showering, removing them mechanically. The best remedy is actara. You water your plants with actara, they consume it and get POISONOUS for all insects for about a week and when they bite - they die. But then again - actara is banned for mass selling in EU and America and if you find something online 90% that you will get fake. Its faked too much. Be careful as i bought fake one

      @OrchidsByAlexander  Год назад +11

      Thank you so much. I hope you have used quite large pieces of pine bark , left sime spaces for roots to grow but the orchid is not swinging :) if so, then i would fill the vase with water after the roots go silverish color (dry) for about 5-10 minutes and then flip it to drain (holding the orchid a little bit) nothing should be falling out. Maybe a few pieces of bark. When the roots will fill the vase you wont need to soak it anymore, just add a little bit of water once a week or so. I will be filming more. But remember- bad experience is also an experience. Not all of my orchids are big and healthy. I have lost some in my journey

    I've been watching a lot of orchid videos and you definitely have the largest orchids on RUclips that I've seen so far. I'd love to see a video on how you water your orchids that have no drainage. This is the first time I've seen anyone do that. Also, can you elaborate on the cooler temperature that you mention? What temperature and do you keep them at that cooler temperature only temporarily to stimulate flowering? That part wasn't clear to me. Thanks in advance! Looking forward to your next video.

    • @OrchidsByAlexander
      @OrchidsByAlexander  Год назад +5

      Hello. Considering my climate i dont regulate the temperature. It drops naturally on spring/autumn when it gets cold outside but still no heating inside. Id reccoment somewhere between 17-22C for blooming. On summer when it gets 26+ they are not likely to give new spikes. I will be filming more cideos including watering and repotting.

    • @OrchidsByAlexander

    • @OrchidsByAlexander
      @OrchidsByAlexander  Год назад

      Thank you, Rick. Wishing you a successful recovery, your health is more important than flowers. All white phalaenopsis are considered to be the easiest varieties. It will probably continue to bloom from old spikes on sides after ending its “purchased” blooming if its not too hot in your area. Just give it enough of light (no direct sunlight) and dont overwater considering the media its planted in. If its planted in cocopeat - make sure to dry it betweet each watering. If pine bark - then its easier not to overwater.
      As for fertilizer - i use just a cheap, regular all-season purpose fertilizer NPK 20-20-20 or 18-18-18. I use the one in crystals (not liquid) any brand. No garlic, no bananas, no pineapples, just a normal fertilizer 😉

    • @OrchidsByAlexander
      @OrchidsByAlexander  Год назад +1

      Thank you for the question. Avtually, not… i dont think there is any symbiosis between moss and orchids. I recently kinda stopped using moss inside of planting. It sometimes grows too much. As for algae… its lottery. Sometimes it covers the whole pot and you cant see the roots. But its not harmful and i dont think it does any special effect to the orchid 🙂

    Hi Alex beautiful orchids!!!!!! I have about 20 orchids. Many have rebloomed but nothing like yours. Do you cut back your stalks after they finish blooming and how far? When will you be doing your repotting video? Thank you so much for sharing.

    • @OrchidsByAlexander
      @OrchidsByAlexander  Год назад +1

      Thank you. It depends. I usually cut it till first bud that can grow as a new side-stalk. But sometimes i cut the whole stalk. The older the orchid - the more flowers it will get. Sorry for not posting more videos. I will be posting a replanting video in end of february-march 100% 🙂

      Hello. Leaves in water upside down is a good method to revive phalaenopsis with no roots at all. Plenty of light, plenty of time and plenty of success might give a great result. But dont be too sad, sometimes its not worth the time.

    We need to know MORE. For example, do you drain the old moisture and put in fresh, will water left in stagnate? Your orchids are very close to the lights, How long do you keep them under light? Does it get warm under them? How much fertilizer do you give them??? My orchids blast their flowers. I am doing something wrong.

    • @OrchidsByAlexander
      @OrchidsByAlexander  Год назад +1

      Thank you for the questions.
      There are many ways how i water them. I rarely soak older plantings, i just add water. I usually soak newly repotted orchids, depending on the media… and if i soak them - yes, i drain all the water. Depemding in weather i can sometimes leave more or less water in stagnet, sometimes not at all.
      I dont keep them over moisty like swamp. The amount if water depends mostly on the stage of growth. If its growing fast - i water it more often.
      Speaking about the lights - its very normal to put them close to the lamp. Dont put the leaves too far from the lamp. Nope, these lamps dont heat up much. It doesnt cause the air to heat up.
      I would recommend 12+ hours a day for lamps. But u can go up to 20, depending on your electricity bills 😉 mine are set up for 14 hours a day.
      Speaking about flower blasting in BUDS stage - can be many causes.
      Main are :
      1) lack of light
      2) lack of water
      3) poor root system
      4) temperature over 26 for phalaenopsis.
      If its a newly bought orchid - its normal, they have stress.
      Fertilising is overrated. I use cheap all season purpose fertilisers. I add them often, but its not as important as light 😊

    • @OrchidsByAlexander

      Hello. Thank you. I usually fertilise every time i water them with a little bit of regular fertiliser NPK 18-18-18 (or 20-20-20) bothing special actually. Sometimes I fertilise with sugar (like ince in 2 months).
      watering is different. It very depends. Newly repotted orchids i usually soak in water for 5 minutes and then drain ( if its a vase then i just flip it to drain holding the orchid) i will be showing the process in upcoming videos 😅

    • @OrchidsByAlexander
      @OrchidsByAlexander  Год назад +2

      I use pine bark. Quite large pieces. Sometimes i add a little bit of sphagnum moss (can be any moss actually) it applies for phalaenopsis. There are many other orchids, they are a bit different in requirements

    I can’t believe how many orchids you have that flower simultaneously! They are stunning! Could I ask you how old they are? Non of mine have even remotely that amount of leafs. I had no clue they could even grow that big and old! I was worried mine would die soon as a lot are nearing the ten year mark, and I thought that’s an orchids life expectancy….
    If you have any tips on how to manage vermin I’d be interested. I had some fungus gnats this winter for the first time, that lived in the soil I bought and woolly louses through a new orchid. I’ve only got about 30 orchids but making sure they aren’t eaten by insects takes a lot of time when inspecting them one by one. If you have a better idea than yellow stickers, carnivorous plants and neem oil I’d love to know.
    Thank you so much for sharing your orchids with us, I’m looking forward to your future videos.

      Hello. Thank you for the questions. You have phalaenopsis right? Mine are about 2-3 years old since putrchased (the ones you see in the video) but clementine is about 6-7. Its not old for phalaenopsis. The older they get - the more flowers they tend to have.
      I get insects often. The bigger your collection gets - the more often u will find them. Regular flues are not harmful to plants.

      @@OrchidsByAlexander thanks so much for your reply! I’ve got seven phalaenopsis, four paphiopedilum, two dendrobium, couple of brassia, a vanda, an epipetalum, couple of cambria, and a mix of a bunch of other types!
      But most of them are green leafs! I’m lured in by the nice flowers but they never bloom for as long as the phalaenopsis flowers. Your amazing flower shelf is so inspiring! I’ll be buying more phalaenopsis in the future!
      I’d be interested to know if you have recommendation on where to buy (or not buy flowers from), I get mine mostly half price on the verge of dying (because I feel sorry for them) from normal shops, or orchid exhibitions, we have a really nice one here in Vienna, Austria!
      Your flowers are testimony of your care and skill, I can’t wait to see more!

    Congrats on your orchids! You are the second person that I know of who can grow orchids with so much success. The other person is also using indoor lightning (14hours/day) and high humidity (70/80%). It seems that these parameters are the most important but are often overlooked due to false/misunderstood information on the internet. Mine are by a window, I am considering getting some indoor lights now, is it expensive to run these lights?
