35+ yrs here. I still love them. But ...I have stopped planting Heavenly Blues. They don't reseed or survive my zone or whatever. (also Scarlett O'Hara, they never come back for me) I stopped planting Heavenly Blues because they're the biggest leaves, strongest vine and I'm just to old to cut them back come fall. The vine is as tough and thick as wire cable. I still let the pinks and purples come up on their own each year, and this year I got a huge surprise when some Star Of Yelta popped up which I have not planted for a decade! They're lovely and controllable. Keepers. My tip: treat Morning Glories like a weed and they'll flourish. No fertilizer, poor to very poor soil, little water. Do not plant them in a container with other flowers which you might feed. You will get leaves but no flowers. Other plants that like poor soil are Nasturtiums, Marigolds, Bachelor Buttons. Best when not babied. I was unaware that so many people also love the Morning Glory. It's my favorite. 👍🏻
Hello, i will recommend you to get the Rangoon creper or quisqualis indica . The flowers of rangoon are not only beautiful, with 3 diferent color on the same flower but they perfume is like strawberry and jasmin. @PlantSmartLivingNOW
Nightmare? They are beautiful, easy to grow and last all summer. If you no longer want any just collect the seeds in fall or cut the vines down before they turn to seed.
I’m growing them in a tire flower pot, I have constructed a tripod of stakes to train the vines to grow on, and to prevent them from strangling the neighboring plants in the garden
We had a vine we planted on a chainlink fence a few years later they literally engulfed four eucalyptus trees down a 400’ fence. They looked like 75’ high green dinosaurs with flowers. Gotta say though, it was very beautiful. Thanks for the video. I had no idea they would get out of hand. We’re trying to keep our gardening work to a minimum. This won’t do. Appreciate your video. Great info. Beautiful yard too.🙂
Been planting many of these all colors I am not worried how many seeds fall the more the better for my privacy chainlink fence I only wish they had a fragerance to them.
All over your garden i see beauty and lots of hard work. L Thanks for warning. Mine havent flowered yet.. i hope i get them out, but its 100 degree heat warning. In south KY. I'm 83.. I LOVE gardening for great Exercise..
Yeah I’m taking your advice about the morning glory. I’m putting it way down the driveway on an old hay shed I would like to see covered. It is far away from all the other flower beds. Morning glory is like chives. If you plant chives, you will have chives everywhere and forever.🥴 Thanks for your advice. Your gardens are beautiful!!
If possible you might consider pinching off the spent blooms to prevent some extremely excessive seed disbursement. I think the birds are in cahoots with this plant or possible they have wings and just fly everywhere. Lol Another vine you could try is cinnamon vine or potato vine.
Thank you for this video. I was just looking to buy morning glory for my yard to cover my block walls in zone 9 but now I think I will do more research.
Wow, I’ve decided to plant MG in a pot. Your video is truly enlightening. Thank you for posting. I hope I can keep it maintained and non-invasive in a pot on my back patio.
I've grown a few different varieties of morning glory down here in zone 9. Super-hot summers make them grow like wildfire. But typically, dry fall weather and colder winters kill back the seedlings pretty good. So, we mow and pull out what we don't want, and nature usually kills back the rest.
Collect the seed pods as they ripen or dead head the flowers. So far ive collected several thousand morning glory seeds from just 4 vines. They can get invasive.
Any time you spot a dying flower, pull it off. Or if a vine is growing in areas u dont want, cut it. Any new plants you see trying to grow, yank em. It's all about maintenance. These type of plants need to be visually inspected at least once a week. Because they will overwhelm you if you let them do their thing for too long.
I was thinking of planting these near a trellis that is attached to the corner of my single story house. Do you know if they will eventually get into my gutters?
I'm at war right now with vmine that are everywhere.Normaly I would not mind as much because I did country gardens for many years. This year , I decided to change to french country and I'm pulling up every day all over I have a spot that's so pack but goes up gazebo so I'll keep those but, they are the dickens🤣 Lovely gardens Farmer Fred!
you have a beautiful yard! 😀 and oh yes! I have a morning glory vine that we got a clipping of from someone. it was growing over an arbor, until it collapsed, so I I cut it back to grow up one of my awning supports. boy was that a mistake! I was caring for a terminally ill loved who was on hospice , and had not been able to get out in the yard for quite a while, now the runners are EVERYWHERE! they are like those killer vines in the old horror movies that wind around someones neck and strangle them to death they are all over under my mobile home, and popping out through the skirting. I have been working on cutting the runners, in hopes that the ones under the place will die out. had not even thought about seeds! 😮💨I may have a bigger job on my hands then I thought... I plan to dig the plant out, after I get the runners under control. though the blooms are beautiful, they are not worth it to me!
I had a rogue morning glory come up..I ignorantly encouraged it, gave it its own trellis. In the end it did what it wanted and nearly choked my rose bush to death from the ground up regardless of my trimming efforts. I think it resented my trying to control its growth lol.. They are lovely but not what I want in my flower garden. I cannot stress enough to be extremely cautious with this plant. The only suggestion I can add is possibly cut the spent blooms to prevent the seeds from developing. It's a tedious task but as this video shows, trying to get control of the rogue plants is a nightmare too.
Also, periodic droughts do a nice job killing back the seedlings. Just put water in the soil where you want them to grow and let the rest dry out and die. They can spread via wind a little bit. But if you plant them in the right spot, it's easy to pull out, mow over, and weed whack the rest. But if you are a lazy gardener and don't have the time to I highly recommend against growing morning glory.
Exactly. And clip them back if they're latching on to other plants. I just did that this morning to a MG starting to strangle a small maple I'm trying to grow. Morning Glories don't mind a haircut. You have to control them by vine training or cutting back. Gardening is like housekeeping, got to control it or it gets out of hand. 🙂
@@PlantSmartLivingNOW It is gorgeous there! I will watch watch a few more videos and see if I have any suggestions but so far, I'm just thrilled to get a view of your property.
Seeded norning glories are a disaster.. when fall comes the vines turn to dead straw seeds fall everywhere so i would only plant the vine morning glory that dies not drop seeds the vihe just keeps spreading & stays healthy all year round.
My neighbor planted bindweed last year, aka Morning Glory or Moon Flower. I had a dozen 60 years old roses that have been lovingly cared for by my family since they were planted. Note the word: had. 🤬 That damn bindweed strangled them to death. It is now all throughout my flower beds. And it's a mutha fucker to get rid of!
My mother in law gave us a potted plant 15 years ago and when we left the plant in the yard, by next Spring we had the same problem. My brother is a horticultural expert, he said what we had was an invasion of binding weed. Binding weed comes back Year after year more than the year before. It looks and acts like morning glory, but morning glory is an annual plant. Yes! It's a pain. It strangled our climbing roses and grew up into our attic. We just try to keep it cut. Sorry so long.
No they're beautiful. Just keep them under control. Clip them back if they're reaching into places you don't want them in. They can take a haircut very well.
If morning glories didn’t close up their flowers in the late morning, I wouldn’t mind them at all. That’s how the ones I grew last year behaved anyway.
The main thing is cut the flowers before they can seed, as their seeds live in the soil up to twenty years.
If your nightmare is Morning Glory everywhere, then you are fortunate to have a privileged life.
I've been growing them for maybe 5 years and they are an amazing plant

This is so funny. “They are growing EVERYWHERE!” It’s beautiful and this is what I want to happen 😆

Well, some d9nt. We will be avoiding it.
I agree with you, funny!!!

I actually bought seeds of morning glory, the one youre trying to get rid.
Either he is in an area w mild winters or he planted the wild type. I love morning glories.

The purple ones do, but the lighter shades do not. ❤
Morning glory is really pretty but you have to keep it under control which is hard to do. They grow uncontrollably around everything and everywhere.
The seedlings are easy to pull out tho. 👍🏻
IKR they are like that African kudzu vine. I am battling morning glories gone wild right now!
That back yard is amazing you know! You've very lucky.

I had the same problem with marigolds one year. Planted a few one year, the next year they were EVERYWHERE :-D

Try planting milkweed for the monarch butterflies

I planted chive plants and i don't have chives forever.

This was most helpful. Will pass on them in my small garden.
Thanks for the warning 👍🏼
Such a wonderful problem!

You’re welcome and thank you for stopping by and sharing.
The problem is not where you plant it. The problem are the seeds. Somehow they end up everywhere.
Try pinching off the spent blooms before they seed especially if it's in a container
The pot won't make a difference it's the seeds they drop that keeps them coming back
They grow easily and prolific. I would get those baby plants 🌱 and share with my friends.
Thanks for stopping by and sharing!
That's exactly what I was thinking 💕👍
Thank you. I was thinking of planting morning glory seeds but after seeing this I will look for something else.
You’re welcome Charles, I’m glad the video was helpful! 😊

Must have been the wild type or you are in a clinate that has mold winters. I adore morning glories

Morning glory blooms all summer. Clematis 3 weeks. No brainer.
Mine never did this. I have been trying to grow them for years, only one year they grew then dissappeared.

Are they good for bring pollination. I have some growing in my garden I did not grow or plant seeds they juts grow
Yes, they are good for pollination!

Just yank them out when you see them sprouting if you don’t like them. Just like weeding.
Exactly. And clip them back if they're latching on to other plants. I just did that this morning to a MG starting to strangle a small maple I'm trying to grow. Morning Glories don't mind a haircut. Damn that sounds awesome

Bindweed is a root spreading invasive problem. Morning Glories are not Bindweed.
I have the same situation
My mother in law gave us a potted plant 15 years ago and when we left the plant in the yard, by next Spring we had the same problem. My brother is a horticultural expert, he said what we had was an invasion of binding weed. Binding weed comes back Year after year more than the year before. Thank you for stopping by and sharing your information about the morning glory plant!
Yes I also thought morning glory was an annual.
Is Roundup ok to use to kill it off
What state do you fertilize them
Never fertilize them. The crappier the soil the better. Do not feed them, you will only get leaves, no flowers.
So morning glories are like kudzu?
Absolutely not.
Cut them down during fall
😑😐 should’ve kept them in pots?
I get them in my garden every year from my neighbors birdfeeder
Morning Glory seeds would not be found in bird seed. The birds don't eat them. In fact they may be toxic for birds and humans.
Birds do not eat morning glory seeds. I believe they are toxic to birds and humans.
Yep, theyre weeds.
Oh, No. I start planting the morning glory. It’s that bad??
How did it go?
No they're beautiful. Just keep them under control. Clip them back if they're reaching into places you don't want them in. They can take a haircut very well.
If morning glories didn’t close up their flowers in the late morning, I wouldn’t mind them at all. That’s how the ones I grew last year behaved anyway.

That's what why they're called Morning Glories, they bloom in the morning, then shrivel- new blooms open up the next morning.
@smorgasbroad1132 lol, yeah. I can't believe I said that. 🤣 I should have just said "I wish the blooms stayed open longer" and left it at that. 🤣
I only wish rose seeds were this easy to propagate 🥲
