I had FRV-1 between 2010-2021. I used it mainly as a surf reverb for guitar but also twice as vocal reverb, once at gig and once on a record. I sold it because Surfy Industries Surfybear Reverb took my attention.
Thanks for this, Josh! I have the FRV-1 and totally love it (especially the "drip") - it is an always-on pedal in my rig! I had been searching for the real-deal stand-alone Fender reverb tank ($$$$) when an old hermit amp repair guy (after fixing my '65 Band-Master) told me about this pedal. It's not going anywhere!
Guys? I still love everything you do, and this episode. Oh! Yeah, I turned 70 today. Sunday I did fingerstyle for offertory... pretty good, my arrangement. Then played 9 holes Disc Golf with guys 32 years younger... and won because my partner is really good, and older than me. Then jammed on new luthier built dreadnought prototype for like 3 hours. Played a yamaha bass, and like Josh, I need a nap now. Never stop! And I won't either. Boss rocks, JHS Pedals Rule!
When I was in my band in and post high school, one of the guitarist had the ‘65 deluxe reverb pedal. I thought It looked so rad. He said it would make his hot rod deluxe sound like a deluxe reverb. Back then I couldn’t tell the difference and loved the way his amp sounded anyway. But I always really dug that pedal.
I had two of those FBM's because of Social Distortion. Used it to boost a Marshall. In Asia they're like the Blues lawyer HM-2 and they can go for steep prices now. The FDR had a sound I would get compliments on.
All of them sound great. Love the jams and it's inspiring watching them when I'm creatively worn out and excites my brain to go plug in. I should also say that it motivates me to dig deeper into the gear I already own.
Thank you so much for the SDRE and Jeremy Enigk suggestion. I really wish more people knew about them. "How It Feels To Be Something On" and "The Rising Tide" were therapy for me when my dad was consumed by cancer. Really hits you in the feels and there's just amazing songwriting and riffs, not to mention the importance and influence of their earlier albums on indie rock music. "World Waits" album from Jeremy is superb as well. Hope you've gotten to listen to "The Fire Theft" as well. It was basically Sunny Day Real Estate MK 2.
I own (or have tried) almost every boutique OD pedal. The Catalinbread 5F6 is the Pedal Ive always wanted. Uncompressed crunchy perfection with a 3 band eq!!
Thanks for reminding me of these. I’d completely forgotten about the 59 Bassman pedal. I got one on Reverb a couple of days later and love it. Thanks Josh.
I have a BOSS ST-2 POWER STACK pedal as my always-on overdrive. It's kinda similar in idea to these Fender ones you presented here. I think it's just great and very underrated. They also made one called the COMBO DRIVE. I had those Fender pedals but the only one that stayed with me was the ST-2 POWER STACK.
I have a theory that the Power Stack, Combo Drive, and Metalcore were all pitched to Marshall, Vox, and Mesa Boogie originally, but only the Fender ones were accepted. They are all Cosm, and have similar unique finishes
@@amoser8589 I hear ya. Agree. They all came out at about the same time. And like you say, they have very similar enclosures. They were all surprisingly VERY GOOD and went pretty much unnoticed in the pedal community. People can't believe the tone I get from the Power Stack.
I have the ST 2 Power Stack also and I was a bit nervous about the COSM thing but it does a great low drive Marshall sound and I use it a lot. It stacks well with other dirt pedals too.
I own the FRV-1 and I’ve grown quite fond of it. It has been on (one of) my board(s) since 2012. Great for surf and garagerock, but it can also do more subtle stuff.
The FDR 1 is a sick pedal , a classic case of the sum is greater than its parts. It models a twin reverb really well but if you drive it a little with something like a sd1 then bingo it starts to really sing the verb and tremolo is just cherry on the cake. Oh and I have the box.
I’ve been using the FMB-1 since it first came out. I use it to drive an AC-30 into full bloom. When my first copy broke, I bought a second one. Now have I two of them in working condition. They’re absolutely brilliant and I use nothing else apart from a keeley moded TS-9 and a Fuzz Factory .
Dude! I've had that first pedal for a long while! It's my favorite amp in box pedal ever! It's one of my always on pedals and a key part of my sound. ❤ 2:23
Made me feel good to see some recognition for boss’s cosm stuff, my first guitar effects “pedal” was an me-50 multi-effects unit and it honestly does some effects really well, and really just gave me a chance to experiment with different effects
I genuinely love my Boss ME-80!! I got sick of pining for the latest and greatest pedals, cable/power/order board problems, and the ever lasting expense of new gear. It does everything well enough if not great once you take time to get to know it. Plus you get to try EVERYTHING and narrow down what pedals you do really want, if any.
The ME-50 really helped me understand the difference in several effects, different ideas of drive based effects and mod effects. Before that I kind of lumped a lot of them together and didn't really understand the differences from flanger to phaser or an Big Muff from a Fuzz Face.
@@Unusualsuspect24 yeah I’ve started using it again and it’s kind of awesome for home playing, it’s got most of what I want there, and it even has stereo for some the effects 😎
Me! ME! I know Sunny Day Real Estate!!! I love them and ESPECIALLY Jeremy Enigk! I saw him in Seattle when he sang with Poor Old Lu years ago(another great band) when they played one of their last shows. You've revied this weary mama today. I'm gonna go listen all day. Thank you Josh for reminding me of these lost treasures from days of old. :)
Killed by an Angel... Record Time... Gentlemen, um, Josh... That was Epic lyricism. Cinema grade studio work, excellent lead break. I will follow your advice to discover the lead singer's other works and return to a deep dive into THE RISING TIDE album. Thanks!!!
I had all 3 of them in different stages. The Bassman was actually my first ever stand alone effect pedal, after some zoom 505s! Nowadays I don't have any of them, but I have really good memories of the Reverb one. It was cool and sounded natural and fun. Bonus points for the tweed, of course!
Fender was like "no we're not interested " and boss was like "we'll give you this much $$$ of the sales " and Fender was like "sounds like a great idea "!!!
Every time I’m reading the acronym “FBM” I think, “I need to to make an FBM!” because I have a the humor of a ten year old in addition to my more sophisticated dry sense of humor. (F’in Bowel Movement)
fun fact! the boss br units also have the cosm guitar effects! one of the most popular uses i know of is with Tame Impala, his debut EP was recorded entirely on a boss br unit (i think he uses a boss br 864 but the br 600 does the same things) and his synth guitar tone (tracks like alter ego, why won't you make up your mind, runway houses city clouds, apocalypse dreams, and more) all utilize the boss br's cosm guitar pitch effect!
BOSS OD-20 COSM unit is one of my best ever 2nd hand purchases, so many great drive/distortion/fuzz sounds, +1 and -1 octave options, perfect for home and friend's home recording sessions.
I still own the FRV-1, and every time I plug it back in I think "This is a great reverb for a pedal." Fortunately, I also own old Fender amps with great reverbs in them. So, I'm not hurting from a lack of good reverb. I think I'll go plug my FRV-1 into my new Kingsley pre-amp and see what kind of magic I can conjure out of those two. EDIT: great video as always, by the way. Cheers to JHS!
The FRV-1 costs more second hand than an EHX Oceans 12. It's amazing how simplicity and doing one thing really well leads to higher value Vs something that will do that, plus everything else.
I had the FRV-1, think it was the first pedal I bought. Sold it when I changed amp (with a decent inbuilt Fender digital reverb). The pedal sold for around 60% more than I paid. Some were selling them for 75% more than original price 😮.
I’m a struggling professional musician. Barely scraping by. I spend countless nights researching guitar gear and finding things I love. Everybody in all the forums talked mad shit about these pedals….I thought they sounded good so I added them to the constant list of gear I need to attain..and now Josh does a video and I can’t pay what people are asking after the knowledge on these pedals is shared. Obviously I’m not mad at the guy or his company but damn I got scooped again. I don’t believe in gatekeeping knowledge so I’m glad it’s out there. But damn
It would be fascinating to see a comparison of these pedals to: (1) the actual amps modeled; (2) modern impulse-type modeling of the same amps. And if you did have the original amps, then extra would be to make new impulses for each one, and compare those to the original amps and to the FB pedals.
it was 2010ish. i was in a small local music store looking for a cheapo reverb pedal. i looked at the usual suspect and was about to settle for a hall of fame reverb (iirc). the dude working at the store insisted that i needed to buy the boss/fender spring reverb pedal. he said is was one of the last ones in stock and he didnt knew if they would get them again and all that bla bla. i hesistated because compared to the hall of fame, it lacks so many features. but the one thing it does, it does very well. i ended up buying the boss and it is the only constant pedal that is always on my pedal board. best spring reverb pedal ever. kudos to the guy at the store almost forcing me to buy the boss pedal lol i still have the box btw
This video made me a big nostalgic. I remember when these came out. I still have a 2007/2008 magazine with a review (or maybe it was just and ad) of them. It's in Spanish. I'll post a picture when I get home. That was the same magazine that introduced me to Sgt. Pepper's, drop D tuning and other bands and effects when I was 15. Changed my life in a way. Half my life ago. Man, back then guitar content on RUclips was barely starting and a lot of it really, really, sucked. Guitar forums were thriving but they were a double-edged sword. Anyway, I wanted those pedals bad! I only had a Roland Cube amp. It did higher gain pretty well but the overdrives and light distortions sucked, and it had no reverb. I never got those pedals... and I never got a Civic, thought I did eventually become the weird neighbor that goes to the mailbox in his underwear. I got into DSP, modeling and plugins heavily too. Fender made the '63 Reverb pedal available in AmpliTube years later, along with 59 Bassman and 65 Deluxe Reverb amp models. The pedal model was good, and the Vibratone model in the package sounded amazing.
I have the Bassman pedal because the Fender Bassman is the best amp ever built. As I can't afford a vintage Bassman, I wanted to get as close as I could. It is a great pedal.
I used the GT-100 (with COSM) for a few years. While the cab sims were underwhelming, and they didn't sound great on their own; in 4 cable method with a tube amp, the fx and preamps sound great, and the functionality is awesome. I've since upgraded to a hybrid board with the Boss GT-1000 Core at the - core - of my board. I frequently use the Bassman preamp model before my tube, Orange Rockerverb preamp for a best-of-both-worlds tone. I'm confident I could use this board without an amp and it would sound amazing. The functionality is crazy-good, and I recommend it to everyone.
Listened to Diary album from SDR earlier. I thought of the JHS show listening to it. I now see the connection/inspiration. I just started listening to them again. I had the pink album in 97’
I own an FRV-1 that I bought new and still use. It's a permanent fixture on my pedalboard. I have a friend who's an amp guru, and he has no problem with using a pedal like this; in fact, he recommended it to me after I had replaced my third reverb tank on my '65 reissue Deluxe Reverb. His comment on it was that a real geek would frown, but if you can tell the difference between this and the real thing, you have better ears than I do. Same here.
They have a set of these used like new at a local shop for about $100 each. Always been intrigued, but never understood the pedal that was supposed to sound like an amp thing only to be colored by the sound of whatever amp I run it through. But like every pedal in the world they sound great when Josh plays them
A lot of them are capable of being plugged straight into the power amp section (power amp in) of an amp, bypassing the preamp. Works pretty well with some dialing in.
These pedals were amazing to me, as a guitar player who constantly read interviews from guitar players/idols growing up referencing these classic amps that obviously a teenager couldn't afford and adult me still can't! Lol. But they are/were a killer pedal collab at the time.
frv1 is my favorite and stay on my board much more time than any other pedal. I bought the first one and loved it, then I bought another one in better condition and with the box for collection!
I got a job at my local Music Store in high school from 06-08 or so. We sold a lot of these. Had a whole Boss wall. Was v fun to get familiarized with the whole line and palette of sounds. (And colors!)
I’ve had the FDR-1 since June of 2007. It was a gift for my 10th birthday. My grandma took me to the local guitar store to pick out whatever I wanted (within reason). I picked this pedal because it had reverb and my practice amp didn’t. I probably haven’t used it in 5+ years now. It’s in the original box right now with all of the paperwork, Boss poster, and the plastic sleeve the pedal came in originally! It was a little over budget at the time, but I didn’t realize how well they’ve held value until now.
I had the 65 Reverb pretty much from when it came out and was a feature of my live set up for a few years. Later I sold it as I had got other pedals which in my opinion did the job better as separate units (strymon flint in particular). Cut to a few yers later and I started getting that nagging feeling that I'd made a mistake selling it and I managed to track one down for a good price (£50 GBP). I soon discovered that it did not fit in well with my other pedals (noisy, tone sucking) although it could sound good by itself. I ended up selling it again last year and now how no regrets as I've already given it a second chance. Great show and cool to see a pedal I have some personal experience of :)
I never can pay much attention cause I’m always looking at the shelves trying to see your wicked boss collection. Trying to make out what all is there. It’s a mind boggling collection!
I have all 3........ I am now officially rich. Thanks Josh.

Back then I couldn’t tell the difference and loved the way his amp sounded anyway. But I always really dug that pedal.
The JHS guy is the rock music nerd and pedal aficionado that we all didn’t know we needed
DUUUUUUUDE THANK YOU FOR GIVING THE RISING TIDE SOME LOVE!!!!! I just saw SDRE live last month and they completely floored me.
The Catlinbread Formula 55 (Bassman inspired) and the Catlinbread 5F6 are worth looking into for those sounds. Thank you for your excellent review.
Especially when you run it at 18v.
It stacks well with other dirt pedals too.
would like more vids like this where we get to really hear how the pedal sounds when dropped on a table
Still waiting for the Line 6 Tone Core episode! One of the coolest lines ever IMO
Yesss, build a pedalboard that weighs more than the sun.
I own the FRV-1 and I’ve grown quite fond of it. It has been on (one of) my board(s) since 2012. Great for surf and garagerock, but it can also do more subtle stuff.
Dude. Your jams are always recorded excellently.
Your love of music, its history, and the gear is so compelling. I want jhs gear just cause you seem so authentic.
🙏🏼🖤🙏🏼🖤🙏🏼🖤🙏🏼
The FDR 1 is a sick pedal , a classic case of the sum is greater than its parts. It models a twin reverb really well but if you drive it a little with something like a sd1 then bingo it starts to really sing the verb and tremolo is just cherry on the cake.
Oh and I have the box.
I play through a 65 Bassman and that FBM1 pedal sounds killer to me. I had no idea that thing even existed. Thanks for bringing it out.
Nice choice on the SDRE. I would say How It Feels is also a great place to start.
I always feel there's something missing from my day when a video talks about a Boss pedal and doesn't say it's 'built like a tank'
yes!
Been using the 63 reverb forever, thanks for making me rich josh 😁
12:14 is truly sick as good as anything...damn...that whole build up.
You guys cooked that jam.
I have the FDR-1. Sounds great, kinda gives me a lo-fi vibe.
Killed by an Angel... Record Time... Gentlemen, um, Josh... That was Epic lyricism. Cinema grade studio work, excellent lead break. I will follow your advice to discover the lead singer's other works and return to a deep dive into THE RISING TIDE album. Thanks!!!
Has to be said, The Drip is the best jam you've ever done on the show
hey thanks!
I missed this kind of episode. Thanks for it! Great as always!
I have FBM-1 for about a decade now. Very nice & useful pedal!
Every time I’m reading the acronym “FBM” I think, “I need to to make an FBM!” because I have a the humor of a ten year old in addition to my more sophisticated dry sense of humor.
(F’in Bowel Movement)
I have the Boss FRV-1. It was the second ever pedal I bought, and still sounds good
I've been missing the old school jams with Addison and Nick. Josh with the drum machine just isn't the same.
Incredible snare tone on that two headlights song
You guys should have an episode where you explain how you mixed the band. It sounds great! :)
if you check the Colour Box V2 episode they kind of do 🙂
I liked the video because of the Nick sighting. Love and miss you. Keep creating your own destiny and enjoying the ride.
fun fact! the boss br units also have the cosm guitar effects! one of the most popular uses i know of is with Tame Impala, his debut EP was recorded entirely on a boss br unit (i think he uses a boss br 864 but the br 600 does the same things) and his synth guitar tone (tracks like alter ego, why won't you make up your mind, runway houses city clouds, apocalypse dreams, and more) all utilize the boss br's cosm guitar pitch effect!
BOSS OD-20 COSM unit is one of my best ever 2nd hand purchases, so many great drive/distortion/fuzz sounds, +1 and -1 octave options, perfect for home and friend's home recording sessions.
Should I get the Bassman pedal to play through my Bassman?
It’s the only true way to get legit Bassman tone
probably
@@nebyenrub Bassman tone? I want that BassMEN tone!
@@jhspedals just to be safe.
But damn
Nice to see Addison back on bass...this trio is ridiculously good
FRV is my go to for nailing the surf punk sound ala Dead Kennedys, fantastic pedal!
It would be fascinating to see a comparison of these pedals to: (1) the actual amps modeled; (2) modern impulse-type modeling of the same amps. And if you did have the original amps, then extra would be to make new impulses for each one, and compare those to the original amps and to the FB pedals.
Would it really? 🥱
Agreed, I'd like to see that comparison with the actual amps, especially with the pedals going through an IR of the actual amps.
it was 2010ish. i was in a small local music store looking for a cheapo reverb pedal. i looked at the usual suspect and was about to settle for a hall of fame reverb (iirc). the dude working at the store insisted that i needed to buy the boss/fender spring reverb pedal. he said is was one of the last ones in stock and he didnt knew if they would get them again and all that bla bla.
i hesistated because compared to the hall of fame, it lacks so many features. but the one thing it does, it does very well. i ended up buying the boss and it is the only constant pedal that is always on my pedal board. best spring reverb pedal ever. kudos to the guy at the store almost forcing me to buy the boss pedal lol
i still have the box btw
The drip jam is by far the best yet! That was epic
I love your jams! How much time goes into writing them and rehearsing them?
I had the pink album in 97’
These pedals looked and sounded soooooo good!!
I caught SDRE in concert last year and it was one of the most magical experiences of my life. Never thought that would happen for me.
Works pretty well with some dialing in.
i've had the 65 deluxe for years, my dad gave it to me when I was younger. Amazing pedal
I have the Fender ‘63 Reverb and love it so much.
I have the 59 Bassman and the 63 Reverb pedals and I am never going to let them go. So there! Even though you just sent the prices through the roof!
Glad to hear the SDRE suggestion! Love that!
"How it feels to be something on" is in my top ten for sure. Thanks for mentioning SDRE!
FBM-1 was my main drive for a long time. Such an underrated pedal
I never can pay much attention cause I’m always looking at the shelves trying to see your wicked boss collection. Trying to make out what all is there. It’s a mind boggling collection!
