This 2 part video on getting started is intended for anyone who is new to doing collage art, or anyone who has already had experience with collaging but would like to find a new interest or get some new ideas about collecting scraps and making collage art. The goal of doing collage art is to enjoy using up scraps you've collected, and to gain confidence in creating a collage composition.
In part 1 I talk about the materials you use, such as the type of collages you can make, and then give you ideas of where you can collect scraps.
For a copy of my list of ides for gathering scraps, see my blog post:

This video is just full of gems! Thank you so much for putting it together.
Awww, I’m so pleased you enjoyed it ❣️
Ty! I'm just getting started with this.
My current fascination with collage is because it is so different than how we did it back in art college 30+ years ago. Collage art has always been my very favorite process and your collages aare done very much like what I know to be collage.
Well, I’m not on the cutting edge, being 5 years behind, but no matter, here I am! I realize that I have lots of things which fit into your categories, so now I have to figure out how to organize all these different paper scraps. I’m not intimidated (yet?!) so I’m going over to my desk to get started sorting & organizing. I’ve got a small book that I’m going to use, so I won’t have really big spaces to start with at first! Thanks so much! Erica❤
Wonderful! I'm so glad you've got some ideas to play with. And you are not behind!! You are right on time 😉👍🏼💜
I struggle with collage, nothing seems to go together. But watching your videos has taught me to be patient, don’t give up just practice. Thank you for the inspiration
I'm so glad it was helpful. Patience is important, indeed. You've figured that out, which is good. 👍🏼
Just found your channel. As a teacher I am profoundly inspired by your ability to communicate effectively to the novice without frightening them away from collage. You rock1
What a kind thing to say. Thank you! 💜💚💙
Thank you for sharing all of that information! It is very helpful! 🤩
Perfect! I'm ready. I have lots of parts
I love the sewing themed about your grandmother. Love it.
Me too, a nice keepsake.
I ♡♡♡ the first project you showed at beginning...the one for your grandmother. It is beautiful.
Thank you so much! I've got a flip-through video of that one too if you wanted to see more :-)
Hello I'm pleased I found you. Wanting to start collageing.
So enjoyed watching parts 1 & 2 of your collage videos. They have given me so many ideas. Thank you for sharing.
Wonderful! I'm so glad they're helpful 👍💜😉
What an excellent list of ideas on what to collect to get started! Thank you.
Great! I'm glad you found the list useful :-)
I just “discovered” collage art and your channel. I am so excited! This just may be the best kind of art for me🤗 Looking forward to following and learning. Thank you for sharing.
Wonderful! Have fun exploring 💙
Love your ideas on several handy sized to collage on!
Thank you, Margarete. This makes me itch to get out all my scraps of everything and start creating! I love doing this stuff, and it is so great to find out that it is ok to collage for no other reason than that it is fun! And that there is a purpose for all of the stuff that I can't bear to throw away. I feel vindicated! Your work is beautiful.
Thanks for your words, Diane. Enjoy your creations :-)
Diane H. Very well said! Love your work too. I love junk journals and collage. Thank you Margarete!
Love this ...... just found you yesterday, and scrolling through to see what you have, going to be binge watching you the next few days. (busy real life schedule, but off mostly tomorrow). Been wanting to do more collage work in my art journaling. Thanks so much.
Nice video, Margarete. Thank you.
So many fantastic ideas! I especially appreciate your suggestions about paint chips as prompts by color (I've been collecting them for years but haven't done much with them), postage stamps, Trader Joe's illustrations, Ikea's multi-language instructions, and using receipts for dates. You might enjoy looking at Duluth Trading co. illustrations (remind me of Trader Joe's--no collage, but cool illustrations of the clothing items--great for making paper dolls!), and using Google Translate to put any text into another language (and even other scripts), then printing it out to use.
Hmmm, Google translate. That's a great idea. I use that all the time. I have used Duluth Trading Co catalogs before. The titles are fun to cut out and use. :-)
Thanks Margarete. Lots of great ideas for collage materials. Looking forward to the next part!
I wish I had thought to hang on my Grandmothers sewing notions! I love your book 💕💕💕
Thank you so much, that’s really really fantastic and useful and helpful.....I really really enjoyed listening and seeing some of the things you might use for collage. Going to watch part 2 now.
Thx for explain this from a beginner’s perspective. I was having a hard time understanding other videos on junk journals. I think I get it now. On to #2!!!
That is very useful Information. I never thought of using most of the articles that you mentioned. Now I will keep
an eye open for more possibilities.
Awesome! Have fun collecting papers :-)
This is SO useful, Margarete - thank you so much.
Awesome, Susan. I'm so glad! :-)
Thank you for your sweet video. Loved the junk journal !!! And your list of ideas. Will be happy to watch the 2nd phase. (mine ? is storage, so it's handy" ) The first project that wasn't fun was precious, I need to do one for each son and on to nieces/nephews. (cleaned out my parents home !) Thanks again for the great inspiration.
Hi. Greetings from Germany. Yes I too get my supplies from Lidl. Yeah nice to have found you. Thank you for this video.
:-)) Lidl has good craft supplies now and again. I got some nice colored pencils there too. Thanks for your comments.
This is really a wonderful video! You helped me stop worrying about my stuff and allow me to just go for it and if I boo boo, I’ll just learn from that. I’m very new to this and find it hard to get started and worst, finish a project. I now realize I will get better with more practice! Thank you so much. I also love the Trader Joe adds too:-))
Thanks so much for watching! I really hope you jump in there and try something. Even gathering the scraps gets your mind in motion :-)
Thank you! I love your video, very good!
Awesome! I'm glad you found it useful :-)
Very helpful. TFS
Really helpful and inspirational - thanks for sharing 💕
I'm so glad, Kara. Thanks for letting me know :-)
Thank you. Very helpful!!!
Thank you Margarete. I love to collage but I'm not very good at it. I can't wait to go to the 2nd video.
Thanks, Leigh. I used to be terrible at it too, but the only way to get better at it is to practice :-)
Elmers gel glue stick is good for paper, goes on smooth and easy to flatten.
I saw it in a store and definitely want to try it out. Thanks!
this was very informative, many thanks
Askinosie Chocolate! My son used to go to college in Springfield MO and every time we'd visit I would swing by their factory.
Love to hear about your process. Btw - your first book, about your grandmother, is priceless - absolutely stunning.

Thanks so much, Gina :-) You know, you are the second person to mention to me that the Askinosie chocolate factory is awesome. I think I need to get out there! I'd come home with a suitcase full of chocolate tablets, that's for sure.
Or, maybe the next time I'm down that way...I pick you up some!
:)

Thank you for these great ideas! Do you know of any cool catalogues to request in the mail? I was getting Duluth Trading Co but it wasn’t exactly what I wanted. Thanks!
Tfs! I got some really nice source-ideas!
Cool! :-))
OK. I may be inspired to try once again without staring at my mess of this and that. Maybe I could some images out to begin with. My feedback is for watching both part one and two. I may consider no pattern tablecloth it may help me focus more on the smaller of detail It seems so trite but after looking at your whitish surface a bulb went off for me. You were easy to understand. I will start my week with a little challenge. I was wanting to begin an important Journal, I see that may not be wise. Thank you so much.
Wonderful! I'm glad you've got some new ideas to think about and experiment with 👍
When you suggested items from work, but you didn't have an example.... After the holidays, I get the Christmas cards sent to my employer. I then cut them up into gift tags, bag/package, decor, and bits could be used for collage too. :)
Nice! Yes, that is a good idea :-) Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, I am 6 months into art journaling and my pages are not to my liking. I love collage though so I hope this helps me get some direction.
Awesome! I hope you come up with some new ideas to keep you motivated!
Great video!
😍😍😍
Thanks for all your advice. I love collage art, it is so much fun. I use about 3 different types of glues (sometimes at once) but double sided tape is good when you want to just display something, whilst PVA glue or similar goes best when making pockets etc as the added tags don't stick. Also, there's nothing wrong using staples instead for tuck spots etc.
Yes! You've got a lot of great advice there. Thanks so much for that! :-)
Tacky glue is good...brush it on.
Did you have any issues with copyright while using magazine images?
Never. If I was trying to resell those individual images it might be a problem, but I am not doing anything like that.
@@MargareteMiller tatting? You so much. I work with collage to some degree on my channel, and I didn't want to get into trouble. I'm not selling my work either at this point. Thanks for your response. I enjoy your channel.
Leedle love it 😂😂 lidl pronounced (lid-ul)
Thanks so much for watching :-)
All good but the first one has more value in my opinion
New subscriber! I love collages! I just started journaling and I think I will add some collages to it. Hope you come by my channel to see my journal.
