When you can, please listen to the studio version on your own. This live performance is awesome, but it is being performed a good decade, maybe two decades, after he recorded it in his prime. His performance on the studio version is pristine, and will make you swoon.

Original Studio Recording: June 26, 1961
Farm Aid Performance: September 22, 1985
This performance was just over 24 Years after the studio recording. Roy was roughly 25 when he recorded it initially and 49 for this performance. Sadly he would pass away just three years later: December 6, 1988 (52 years old)
The tonal differences between the two performances is dramatic and the pacing and style evolved over those 24 years. Definitely worth giving the studio recording a listen as it is a much different sound and has far more emotion in it.

Close. His first recording of the song was in June 1961 (released July 1961), and he died in December 1988. I still enjoy listening to, and singing, his songs around the house, especially "Pretty Paper."

He's older here. When he was younger, he had more power behind his high notes. Doesn't matter to us, he is loved. After many years of seclusion, George Harrison asked him to join The Traveling Wilburys. He didn't live long after that, but I was so glad that for a short time, he had singing and companionship in his life again.

Roy dropped out for a while, but by the mid 70s he was opening for the Eagles. He had triple bypass in the late 70s, but was back touring in the early 80s. In 1981 he won a Grammy with Emmylou Harris for a duet they recorded for the movie "Roadie", which included a cameo of Roy. In 1988 there was the "Roy Orbison and Friends: A Black and White Night" tv special, and he had started working with Jeff Lynne on what would become "Mystery Girl". Jeff was his connection with George Harrison, er I mean Nelson Wilbury XD

I got to see Roy Orbison in person four months before he passed away. It will be a concert I never will forget. Hearing him sing live could never be duplicated on a recording through a home media set up. Every single song he sang got a standing ovation. I've seen other concerts and have never seen the reaction that Roy had gotten that night. He is a musical legend. In the early days the Beatles was the opening act for Roy. He was an artist that stood alone. No one in my lifetime will every take his place. Anyone that likes his music should read his background. He had tragedies in his life that would make some people have a mental breakdown. I believe Roy was able to work through those tragedies with his music. When I was told that Roy had passed away, I actually cried. Another great artist that left us too soon.

Roy was the best. He was a baritone that tried to sing in falsetto. It was not working. He was asked to try to sing higher in his natural voice. It turned out that almost had NO top end to his range. So most of his songs got higher and higher until the ending. Amazing.

Roy is an absolute legend. A journalist asked Elvis once what it was like to be the World's best singer Elvis said "Don't know, you'd better ask Roy Orbison". He repeatedly said that Roy was the best singer he had ever heard.
If you want to see the respect Roy had, watch the "black and white" TV special. He has the best band ever and at least 9 of them could fill atadiums themselves, including all 3 female backing singer kd Lang, Bonnie Tait and Jennifer Warner, plus Bruce Springstein, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne Tom Waits...
Roy was also part of the super group the travelling Wilburys along with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Jeff Lyne. When Roy died, they broke up the band, as the reason for the band was to sing with Roy. George Harrison said he found it impossible to.concentrate when Roy was singing. That's the guy who in the Beatles spent over a decade standing between John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

Roy is in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Known as the operatic Rock & Roll King. Late in life he joined with George Harrison, Bob Dylan, et al in the "Traveling Wilburys. "Near the end of Roy's life there was a tribute concert for him at the Coconut Grove in NYC, the " Black And White Night Concert". Bruce Springsteen sang harmony and KD Lang, Bonnie Raitt and Jennifer Warrens sang back up. Also performing were Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, Elvis' back up band (OCB) and a dozen more. The concert CD has bios for all of the main performers, a short history lesson. I hope that you enjoy it as well.

I was a maybe 14, 15 yr. old when I first heard Mr. Orbison and I was swept away with everything re his astounding voice, the vocal, the band, all...and when I listened now in 2021, December, I still get choked up, from the music and from the lyrics because I believe he and his wife that died had something extremely rare; I did too but I never got this angel I loved at 22 as no other ever. Had she met me (metaphorically even one inch with my already loving her intensely one million inches,) it would have been heaven on earth for us. Fifty years later and I am as Florentino Ariza with his sacrificial love for Fermina...He waited and from time to time he'd see her, hear of her because she was forced into an arranged marriage to a wealthy doctor. He dated some because of his heart sickness, etc but the 50 years later, she 69, he a "young," strong 72 they meet and marry...a great love story. The last 50 years seemed as nothing when, now older in body, but that highest form of love gave them their heaven on earth.
Sadly what Florentino had, what I have had all this time never repeats itself in one lifetime. My only question is if one is given this amazing, unbelievably kind of love, what cruelty that one of the two go on as the grey goose that, mate gone, they fly on alone until they die...as I will. I ask if Shakespeare's line is right or not, "it is better to have loved than never know it at all." The heart sickness is as negatively ferocious as the love is positively making one wonder if they are dreaming or not. Roy Orbison had 2 very personal songs to his wife I think. Please forgive length here? Best, w

This song was released in 1961. Roy was one of the great artists who came out of Sam Phillips' Sun Records in Memphis including Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Charlie Rich. Roy had some terrible tragedies in his life, culminating with his untimely death at the age of 52 in Dec 1988 right when he was about to experience a major revitalization with the television special "Roy Orbison and Friends: A Black and White Night" (Jan 1988), his participation in "Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1" (Oct 1988), and his platinum selling album "Mystery Girl" (Jan 1989).

You have come face to face with one of my favorites of all time. He was supposed to be a wonderful man. I don't know about that,I didn't meet him. You will not find a flaw. ELVIS even recognized him as one of the greatest voices. I never tire of hearing him. He had sadness in his life. Thank you for sharing this. I wish that you had more to say about his amazing voice

To my ear, he was straining to hit the falsetto. You should listen to the studio version. Any reaction to Ray Orbison should start with Oh Pretty Woman (studio version).

Agree that you should listen to the k.d. lang version of this song. Roy Orbisun gave her his imprimatur to perform it, which he had never bestowed to anyone previously for this song. The first time I heard her sing it in concert, the hairs on the back of my neck literally stood up. Can't recommend it higher than that. The performance at the Roy Orbison Tribute after he died is what put her on the map.

That sounds like someone recorded it on a Sony Walkman in their pocket in the crowd! It sucked, and was a terrible example of Roy’s talent and his career! Pathetic. I was a D. J. during the 60s and even as poor as the recording equipment that most people had, they could do better than that on their reel to reels at 3-3/4” per second speed.

"Only The Lonely", "Pretty Woman", "Blue Bayou", "You Got It" (released a month or so after his death at 53 from a heart attack), and "I Drove All Night" (covered just a couple months later by Cyndi Lauper and later by Celine Dion) are songs of Orbison's that you must check out. He started wearing black sunglasses in the early 60s, and it became his trademark. Many people still think Orbison was blind, because he was rarely seen without sunglasses. Around the time he recorded his final album in 1988, he also played and sang as part of a supergroup called The Travelling Wilburys, also featuring Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, George Harrison, and Jeff Lynne, from E. L. O.
