- A fishing guide in Haliburton Forest, a private reserve not too far from me, invited me out for a day of snowmobiling and ice fishing for trout. Unstable weather and unseasonably warm temperatures made for difficult fishing, but I was able to put one decent sized brook trout on the ice and we had a great time.

My parents had a trailer about a mile from where the video was taken. Growing up going to the trailer in every season was profound. Alas the price of gas increasingly prevented us increasingly from going to the trailer to the point we could not go anymore. Glad to see the area again.

I used to work at IGA grocery store in Sutton, Ontario as a cashier. In Winter we'd get lots of Ice fisherman from the northern USA states.
They'd load their shopping carts to overflow level. Always nice but asking me about the fishing. One day I casually told one man that at night the fishing would not be good cause MNR put all the fish into underwater pens. Should of seen the look on his face. LOL.

Winner winner trout for dinner
Oh the joy and lightweight of battery operated augers. Our old gas model with a huge 10" blade, was a beast. Sure could not handle that machine now. Nice eater, my biggest was 5 3/4 pounds at 21" Man it was a gorgeous male. Wish I could have afford to have it mounted. That fish hit in the shallows, less than 3 ft. Wow what a thrill to land it.

Every time I have gone out onto the frozen lake the wind would be whipping around and it is freezing cold. All said and done love a fried up fish for dinner.

I am in South East Michigan, and we been ice fishing Lake St, Clair for 40 years now, nowwhere near the fishing of the Canadian waters, but still fun, you just can`t beat bluegill, perch and walleye in cold water, even the pike are great in the ice cold water. The lake is loaded with walleye, but perch not so much anymore, much better fishing on the Canadian side of the lake, nowhere near as many crazy weekend boaters, you have to be off the lake by 10:00 am or you get rocked by the traffic, all the best to ya. Nice to see you get out fishing.

Brings back many memories of Ice fishing on the finger lakes in upstate New York. My brother in law and I had basically the same setup as you had even down to the green colored gas auger. We would catch jack perch and walleye and make poor man’s shrimp out of the perch. Thanks for taking the time to do these extra clips my wife and I look so forward to your post.❤

Dad and I went ice fishing once when I was a kid in the 60s, with some guys he worked with, found out real quick we weren't dressed for the cold so we sat in the car. Never had any desire to try it again
My husband & I went ice fishing on many lakes in Wisconsin…it was fun for about 3 hours…my husband got a large pike! That was exciting! Enjoy your trout!
Beautiful Temiscamie strain Canadian brook trout. I envy you man! When I go ice fishing, I usually forget to take a hand towel or old flannel shirt to wipe my hands. Keeps the inside of your gloves clean and dry.

And in my books, trout are the best to fish for.

Oh hey, it's @steviefunfur! How cool that two of my faves know each other! I just made an ice fishing pole on Tuesday out of a dowel and caught a rainbow trout in about 5 minutes with it! Also, there's no doing ASMR with steviefunfur, gotta love him!

i recall seeing a Japanese video where a guy did a rubbing of a fresh caught fish to show what he caught ... he after added colour with water colours BUT the scales and all the rest showed u real well and looked like a perfect drawing of a fish ... perhaps keeping some paper and charcoal on hand the next time and try it to see what and how to get the best rubbing of the caught fish ... you could literally turn them into a scrap book as well ...

Ice fishing! Now we're talking, Shawn. This reminds me of your other cabin near the river. Rather than a rainbow, you caught a gorgeous brook trout (better tasting in my opinion). Southern Ontario has 25% of the world's lake trout lakes. Hundreds of lakes congested in one small area just above the Great Lakes. They can grow up to 50 pounds (or more) and provide real food for the table.
That 10" lithium battery ice auger will cut approximately 40 holes on one charge. Near the mouth of big brooks, ledges, rocky shoals, points, sharp drop-offs, with huge granite boulders on shore, are good places to find brookies. In smaller lakes you may find them all over. In large lakes, closer to shore (their called coasters in the Great Lakes). I would dig holes close to shore (at least 3 feet of water) and go out every 20 feet into deeper water.
Get your stool (or folding chair), jig near bottom and work your way up every 10 feet. After 5 minutes in one hole, keep trying others until you start getting hits. I would not jig so fast and high. Smaller motions and more time in between jigs have worked better for me. Sometimes they hit as the lure falls. Try different jigs, with a little bit of fish with the skin on the hook. One the best brook trout fishermen in Canada swears by leaving a lure still halfway down and waiting for the trout to take it.
With that snowmobile, you have access to one of the best fishing areas in the world. An insulted tent would keep you warm, and you can stay overnight. Enjoy!
