Wolves at the Cabin!

- A pack of wolves gather and howl at the end of the meadow in front of the cabin, probably lured by the smell of deer meat and the hide I'll be tanning. They stay for at least an hour before going silent. Tomorrow, I'll leave Cali in the cabin and investigate to see what they're up to.

Incredible hearing the wolf pack howling so clearly (from the safety of my European sofa)
Same!! (from the safety of NZ) Way cool, but a bit of a worry still...
😅😅here from US.
no wonder he grabbed a gun, i would too
Here from Australia 🇦🇺
Not so sure about your sofa, but northern Europe has wolfs.
I remember the wolves circling you and Cali last year. This current pack seems to be quite large judging by their singing. Hope you and Cali are safe from them.
I hear this every night here in Massachusetts, the coy wolves sound like they are having a grand ole party. They have multiplied here as of late. And they are relentless hunters and will not give up on an opportunity to eat. It's unfortunate that they seem to have figured out where people's small pets live. Small dogs and cats have fallen victim to this pack many times. They run right down the streets at 2 am looking for their next meal.
@sway696 hmmm ... sounds like a thinning of the herd is in order!!
It does sound like a big pack. I am a bit concerned...concerned enough to pray for
Shawin and Cali to be safe.
@@sway696 Oh no! Must be terrible having to worry about, bears, cougars, coyotes & wolves. America is returning back to its wild state!
( I'd be very vigilant & have my gun on the hip out that way. I have seen what they can do to a man in a pack of 4.)

Keep Cali close and safe.
Those wolves are trying to draw her in. Keep Cali well protected and safe.
They some times send one to get aanimal to follow them then the pack attack.
Exactly right
In northern NewYork my daughters Huskies would hide near the house or beg to come inside when the howling would start.
Having a female dog guarantees more reliable and balanced behaviour than a male dog. The only risk is that some male wolves will be attracted by the scent of her secretions when she goes into heat and then it is good to keep her locked up.
I'm sure they smelled Cali ... but more likely they are simply drawn in by the smell of Deer meat/hide ... and vocalizing to each other as they check out the area ... Wolves are curious, but wary of adult humans (especially ones with rifles) ... they will keep a safe distance from the cabin unless they are starving
I’d say it’s essential to have a dog with you on a project like this. Companionship for sure, but they are a key alarm system!
maybe a gun, too?
And Cali knows Shawn will protect her. 💪 her senses are definitely spot on when they are around. Glad she knows to stay close to Shawn. 👍
Wow! Did you hear her bark?? She is warning them to stay away! Good dog!
@@ruhrev it depends on who you ask. For our land in the middle of nowhere, Wrigley and Emma would disagree with you - (they are our “essential” 80lb and 60 lb Labs! )

He’s not a dog 😂
Please watch Cali and do not let her go far. The wolves will try to lure her out and surround her. They have a system and they know what they are doing. Love your program, your work, and all your scenic views. From NC. Your work is flawless.

Cali is a very loyal dog , her eyes never left Shawn's body, she kept looking at him and you could see she was watching and was on the alert for any command from Shawn while they were standing there listening to the wolves howling, Cali sitting of course. Thank you for sharing. Have a lovely day.
The ethereal sound of the Wolves. Beautiful.
Be mindful of Cali for sure.
Their howls mixed with the noise of wind makes it sound eerie and surreal. In a way it's beautiful. Unadulterated nature. But I'm glad you have Cali with you!
How enthralling to actually hear wolves so close. Cali sounds the alarm to warn you. It is beautiful to watch you both moving in harmony with each other; each jne protecting the other. The wolves don't stand a chance against your united front. I'm not sure where Emily's place is in comparison to yours, but I'd be more concerned about her and wolves than Cali. I know you have it all under control, so thanks for sharing the rawness of nature that you experience. Co tongue to be safe and God be with you all. From Down Under aka Australia with love & prayers. 🇦🇺🤗🙏✌️👍👊👏👏👏🇨🇦
Take care of our little Cali with the wolfs can become dangerous!! 😳❤️🌷
Agreed. I'd be keeping her on a very long leash.
I like your demeanor Shawn, knowing nature without panic or over reacting. Be safe!
Oh my gosh, that’s why Cali wouldn’t come down in the meadow the other day to you. She sensed wolf danger and wanted you to get out of there and come to the safety where she was! It makes sense.❤️😊
Cali is wel trained. It could end up saving her life. 👍🐾
When Cali first barked, I jumped a little. Good girl doing her job! I am in central Minnesota and can remember the first time I saw a Timber Wolf. In broad daylight running across the highway in front of my car. It was BIG!
Cali looks as regal as only she can! Beautiful 😍 girl.
I'm glad that Cali has the smarts to stay close to her Dad and the homestead when wolves are about.
Goldens are very special and I miss my Chakra a lot. Please take good care of Cali.
A few years back we had a pack of around 14 wolves in the area. It was kinda intimidating , working outside and seeing that many walk by. The moose population that next spring was way down. Thankfully the moved on. Be safe 🇨🇦❄️
Thank you for sharing the wolf howling. We had a friend who ended up with a rescued wolf pup that had been torn apart by coyotes ( he lived in a cabin in the middle of nowhere, he was not the one originally to save it - he rescued it from the rescuers)Even as a big wolf (with 3 legs) the coyotes were always trying to draw her out but she was smart enough not to answer their call. Wolf packs didn’t want anything to do with her. She was beautiful!Note: people should never “own” wolves.
Or hybrids. Their needs are vastly different.

Wow! Great recording. Sounds like a good sized pack.
Be nice to get the drone out and watch them from above.
Now that's a sound that sends shivers down my spine! But they have a legitimate place in the grand scheme of things and are stunningly beautiful animals. Keep safe! 👍🇨🇦😎🐾

Good to know that Cali has a barker! I have not ever herd her voice!

Great video!!! Your pups smart stays back knows you are the protector. I live in Ontario and the only thing those wolves are afraid of was the sound of my slippers shuffling along the cold floor at 5:30 am. 😁 and that really happened. Big Beautiful grey wolf. It was amazing to see him there in my back yard when looking out my big bay kitchen window and seeing him staring me right in the eyes then he flicked his head and booted it back into the forest. He was grabbing a little mouse snack I'm sure when I interrupted him.
Wow, I think that's the first time I've ever heard an *angry* bark from Cali!
I never heard my Golden Retriever bark either, ever, but she was inside the house in the suburbs or in the back yard mostly. Cali knows there is danger lurking, I bet! Smart Girl!
I am very much liking the frequent posting

What a wonderful sound. Only time I have been very close to howling wolves was an over night camp out at a rescue center.
Their howls hit you right in the chest and reverberate right through you. Sound like they were proclaiming their territory in your area. When I lived on the old Federal land west of Brougham, Ontario we saw wolves. Largest one was a huge black wolf that crossed Highway 7, fifty feet in front of my car. Just me and the wolf on the road. He easily topped 100lbs and his back was higher than the hood of my Datsun. I came to a complete stop just marveling at his sheer beauty.
We had had smaller wolves in the Cannington, Ontario area (North Durham Region) more like the size you have. Still thrilling to see them.
I’d like to see them go extinct, nobody complains about dinosaurs being gone
@@TheREALLibertyOrDeath I guess you missed watching what wolves in Yellowstone ( the park, not the show) have done to create a better environment there. Or missed the effect of deer what happens to deer without natural predators of which humans are creating. Wolves are essential.
@@Rags2Itches they don’t stay in the park Einstein. They have decimated the elk herd in at least 3 states.

Impressive, and also raising alertness by instinct, at the sound of that howling.
To see Cali seeking your hands, what seems to be for reassurance, is heartwarming.
My male cat, still young, does exactly the same, after spotting his big bully of a rival, near the garden.
In the empty North of The Netherlands, 1 wolf was spotted, in 2015.
With present day tempi of minus 8 Celsius, for a week now, more are spotted near human habitat, in the Northern provinces.
It's the first time in 10 years, that we can skate on natural ice!
I was moved by how much that dog loves you.
Never surprised at how your protect Callie from peril! Interesting tutorial on the Wolf population.
I used to hear them all the time at my cottage in the summer, back the 90s when I was a kid. My parents told me it was someone's sled dogs so I didn't get scared, but honestly I wasn't scared of wolves, and had sort of an obsession with them. I would've thought it was cool (and still do). This was somewhere between Parry Sound and Kearney.
the difference in he bark was incredible , Cali went all defensive , it shows that the wild is still in all of us .
Nice sound if you're inside the cabin with Cali!
That was cool too hear all those wolves! Thanks for sharing.
Awesome sounds of life THANK YOU
I know Callie's safe with you... but we're all watching out for her too with those howls so near .. be safe!
That shotgun is a MUST where you are, and Cali, too! Stay safe.
Sounds like a whole lot of howling for one. Wonderful to hear. Keep your loved one close, and that includes Cali as well. Especially her.
Wow. They are making their intentions known. To me that was a warning from the wolves. Cali did good staying close. God bless her. ✌️💞🙏
That sounds terrifying 😮 Cali stay close!
Calli is such a good girl, and so intelligent! I'm glad you keep a close watch over her when the wolves are making their presence known. Sounded like there are several out there. Their howling sounds so eerie to me. I've read where the eastern wolves have bred with coyotes producing offspring called "coywolves", and last I read about them said some have migrated as far down as the New England states. Stay safe up there.
The howls always make me shiver. They get pretty brave sometimes, even knowing you’re close by.
Yes, I live rurally in western WA, USA, and am so thankful for my neighbors' dogs. I call them my "early warning system". Stay safe.
Cali had her "don't call me cute" pants on with that barking. Big girl is ready.
Out of love I'd have to try and keep her with me or inside. I'm sure you're taking great care of her and you know all of the things people are saying.
A few warning shots might not be bad idea to let the wolves know your no playing, Cali barked letting you know trouble is lurking beyond the trees. You & Cali stay safe and stay strapped while outside the cabin! Thanks for sharing Shawn! ✌🏼❤️🙏🏼

Warning shots?
Shit...most wolves will tear ass if you just let them know you're there.
Cali is such a great dog. She's in protection mode.
Thanks for showing us this video🎅🐕
Such an eerie but awesome sound. I live near the outskirts of a small city in South Eastern Ont., and every year in late fall I’ve been lucky enough to hear a pack of what I think are coyotes or hybrids, moving about a mile south of me where there’s more woods and fields. It’s more of a higher pitched yelping of several of them. It gets the neighbourhood dogs going but it doesn’t last more than a couple of minutes. It raises the hair on the back of my neck but I really enjoy that I get to hear them.
Same thing happens with great horned owls. At least once a year, I’m in the right place at the right time. There’s always 2 calling to each other near my yard. Fabulous.
Hey Shawn I wonder if Cali had a recent run in with some wolves or a wolf, maybe that’s the reason why she’s a little more timid now and not as active around the property, keep a close eye on that wonderful companion of yours !
Good to see Cali's got your back. Good girl Cali!!! Really enjoyed those sounds. :D
I know the wolves can be a danger to you and Cali, but I do love the sound of wolves howling in the distance.

They do? How so?
@@TheREALLibertyOrDeath watch how the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone National Park completely restored the ecosystem. Predators are vital for healthy ecosystem functioning.
@@TheREALLibertyOrDeath Wolves along a river bank where deer would regularly graze is impacted as the soil becomes more firmer as the vegetation is not being eaten by the deer,it makes river bank erosion slow down causing the river to meander less and allows the river to get deeper in parts and small pools to form.
Also wolves will prevent certain animals grazing in an area whilst they inhabit that area which causes the vegetation to prosper which can result in an increased biodiversity by giving food and shelter to a wider range of plants and animals.
That’s just a few examples,Yellowstone reintroduced wolves in the 90’s and they’ve made an impact on biodiversity there.
@@cafedeltransit your answer is complete b s . All apex predators do is kill everything in the area. They kill for sport too, not just to survive

They sound a lot like coyotes. We used to have coyotes in surround sound where I used to live. They seemed to take turns echoing across the valleys and hills.
I agree, I live not far from Shawn and there are mostly coyote packs and few wolves. You need to go much further north in Ontario to find wolf packs. He is only 4 hours north of Toronto.
Not true. I’ll see if I can find the map that shows the wolf/coyote genetic distribution in Ontario. There are pockets of almost pure Algonquin wolf, including here, where there are very few coyotes. Wolf range extends down to the Severn River but the further south you go from the far north, the smaller the wolf. I’ve also never heard of coyotes hunting moose successfully and their scat consistently contains moose hair so it seems unlikely that they’re scavenging moose killed by other causes
@@islandman5802 I also live slightly Northwest of Shawn and I can tell you there definitely are timber wolves occasionally in this area along with red wolves, coyotes and hybrids. I've seen timber wolves well over 100 lbs. but mostly the Grey's, Reds and coyotes and once, one you would swear was a German Shepherd.
People are so unnecessarily paranoid about wolves. My small village is near Shawn, isolated deep in the bush for hundreds of years and there has never, ever been an issue with coyotes or wolves in or around our area and we're out there all the time. The big bad wolf is a myth, people, same goes for bears.
Tell that to all the wiped out elk herds out west

Had a Cali too. For 15 wonderful years. (Border collie) and she used to think the coyotes wanted to play (upon viewing from the inside of the house). We live at the edge of a 200 acre preserve. Our Cali was like 40lbs. We got Cali her own body guard. Burn is a shepherd and tops out at 85lbs. He’s an excellent companion but he’s always keeps that 25% of his brainpower in guard-duty mode. According to recent genomic research, eastern wolves, previously considered a subspecies of gray wolf, Canis lupus lycaon, actually represent a separate species (Canis lycaon). Algonquin wolves, also referred to as Eastern wolves, are classified as a “threatened” species. The wolves are found only in a handful of places, including Algonquin Park in Ontario, Canada. The Eastern wolf has disappeared from almost all of southern Ontario, largely as a result of loss of habitat through forest clearance and farmland development. Hybridization could also be a potential long-term threat to the genetic integrity of Eastern Wolf populations. Less than 500 Eastern wolves remain in the wild; most Eastern wolves live in central Ontario and western Quebec, and with the highest population densities found in Algonquin Provincial Park.
