I was homeless for four years, and at this time of year I thank God that I am not on the streets. I remember my friends at this time who died of homeless related problems. God Bless you, especially Harry...RIP
God bless you sir 🙏 I've worked with the homeless for a few years 🙏 I've got so much respect for you and anyone homeless and I'll carry on giving homeless people all they need 🙏 well as much as I can.
I remember my first trip to Europe. I had never seen homeless people before. I was shocked. Now they are everywhere. I try to carry some cash just to give to them. I ran away from college when I was 17, with 50 cents in my pocket. This was back in 1970. People were so kind to me.
Anyone that remembers Ralph McTell from the 60's London folk clubs will know that the old lady carrying her home in two carrier bags that he sings of was, I think, Old Meg, who was a sad, regular sight around Soho in those far off days.....Never fails to give goose bumps, this song.
He actualy wrote this when he was in paris ,,it was based on paris just like the man who wrote Sherlock holmes connan doyle lived in Edinburgh it had the cobbles the smoke from the chimneys fog that was what inspired him,,,,,..same with song it could apply to any city then and now nothings changed cheers
+JoeStunner Yeah Joe ,me too , wonderful song. Depressing video - sadly not just London , most major cities in the world have homelessness, thanks to greedy governments and Royal families. Sadly in the modern world buying nuclear weapons and holidays for the Queen take priority over the common people....
+JoeStunner It still moves me after 30 odd years. It is a mark of shame on Western Governments that 47 years after this song was first released nothing at all has changed.
+Gandrhulf Harbard i was living in brixton by The time this song came out And lived in London for over than 3 years beside I have tried so mano times to fine a helping Hand to some of those homeless you'd be surpriesed to find out how many refused. ..Most of them likes their life
So true, now it's also the streets of DUBLIN...I think its so Sad.. and there's so much greed in the WORLD....I always give, and share a chat, I'm told by many, people don't even show the a glance, we are all brothers and sisters, we should at least care....GOD, BLESS THEM ALL...X
Never heard this song in all my 58 years on this earth. It's about time!!! What a beautiful song. My God. Respect to the artist for this apparently classic tune. So Beautiful. So eloquently written and sung. The world needs a big group hug and we all need to sing the same song. Peace and Love.
this song break's my heart when ever I hear it , sadness fills me ,we all struggle but homeless people more than most, nobody knows how they really feel unless you are homeless, may God bless them and show them his love through the love of Godly people amen.
Poetry to music from an amazing few years when people like Ralph, Cat Stevens, Paul Simon, Don MacLean and others created genuinely timeless, classic songs.
forgot about this song ... was introduced to it in 1971 when I visited London ... What a beautiful song about the poverty hidden under the surface of what was then 'Swinging London".
'The man outside the seaman's mission' says it all, the forgotten Merchant Navy. without whom there would be a London as we know it, people can't fight without food, planes can't fly without petrol all brought in by the Merchant Navy of which I was proud to be a forgotten hero. Take time to visit the MN memorial at Tower Hill and see how many thousands died with hardly any mean of defending themselves, it only took one torpedo for the crew of a tanker to die a horrible death. Gone but not forgotten
I spent fifty years at sea in the Merchant Navy - and saw it go from 80% of the world´s shipping down to about 4% after we joined the EU - and during the Second World War we had more casualties than the army, the navy and the airforce put together - and were awarded not a single medal...!
First heard this in the 70's - about 10 yrs old - it moved me then, and it moves me now still. Just such a good and sad portrayal of those that have not! I defy anyone not to have a lump in their throat!
This was all about me for 10 years, except it was here in the United States, a very lonely time. But then I heard the voice of God and I quit abusing drugs and alcohol and I asked Jesus into my heart ❤ and since 1986 I am not alone anymore. It can happen to you too, if you want. If anyone is anti religion, this IS NOT about religion or what church you go to, it's about Jesus
So wunderbare Musik gab es nur in den 60er und 70ern. Dieser Song ergreift einen noch heute - nur ist es ein gewaltiger Unterschied, ob man den Song heute oder eben vor 43 Jahren sich angehört hat ...
And yet loneliness affects millions of well off people who live in mansions. Seeing others on the streets living in appalling conditions cannot turn on a switch in a lonely persons mind just because they see many living in agony. Loneliness and depression hold each others hands and even a warm bed and full stomach at night cannot compensate a lonely and empty mind.
There’s none so blind, than those that see, never walk past anyone without a smile or a hello. I was once in a room full of people at Christmas, but so lonely, my lovely husband a serving soldier was doing his duty for queen and country. God was I so alone.
classic track this one, was 17 when this came out and, livin in a small village in Yorkshire , a place where everyone new every one else. London was a different world to me then, I didn't no what poverty was. as life had it, I ended up livin in London for over 30 yrs, still live here and one things for sure, I no all about poverty and loneliness on these streets, ive seen it with my own eyes every day for 30 yrs.the words to this track were true back in 1975 and, theyre true now at xmas 2017

Have you seen the old man In the closed-down market Kicking up the paper, With his worn out shoes? In his eyes you see no pride Hand held loosely at his side Yesterday's paper telling yesterday's news So how can you tell me you're lonely, And say for you that the sun don't shine. Let me take you by the hand and lead you through the streets of London I'll show you something to make you change your mind Have you seen the old girl Who walks the streets of London Dirt in her hair and her clothes in rags? She's no time for talking, She just keeps right on walking Carrying her home in two carrier bags. So how can you tell me you're lonely, And say for you that the sun don't shine. Let me take you by the hand and lead you through the streets of London I'll show you something to make you change your mind In the all night cafe At a quarter past eleven, Same old man sitting there on his own Looking at the world Over the rim of his tea-cup, Each tea lasts an hour Then he wanders home alone So how can you tell me you're lonely, Don't say for you that the sun don't shine. Let me take you by the hand and lead you through the streets of London I'll show you something to make you change your mind Have you seen the old man Outside the Seaman's Mission Memory fading with the medal ribbons that he wears In our winter city, The rain cries a little pity For one more forgotten hero And a world that doesn't care So how can you tell me you're lonely, And say for you that the sun don't shine. Let me take you by the hand and lead you through the streets of London I'll show you something to make you change your mind

I have been working with the Homeless for 47 years now and its just getting worse. And I have absolutely no answers. One minute someone has a good Job, a Wife and Children, - and then suddenly its good along with self-respect and motivation.
HerbyPumpkin An end to the worldwide banking cartel and the corporate state in which people are cheap cattle serving their money god globalist masters would be a start. i love this song! the pictures describe the song so darn well and it makes me really sad that there are so many poor, sick and homeless poeple, not just in london, but everywhere:(
this video is sooo fitting and makes the point of the song that much clearer!!! makes ya feel guilty for having bad days when ya see how bad some people have it!!!!
A lot of people commenting have scarcely ever slept out on the streets in their lives. Nor have they gone up and down on night buses. It is, actually, quite invigorating to be out and is preferred by quite a substantial number of people as a way of life. When you are on the streets you are not just a number.
after all lifes troubles and strife has gone you realise life has so much to offer...just remember what made you today can never be taken away... love life and be strong..... its not always dark at six :)
a sad yet such a great song. its relevance in todays and yet yesterdays society too is bang on. nobody should be homeless cold or left to just decay away. this should be a Christmas number 1. not a poxy Xfactor winner. id buy this in a heartbeat..
LONDON was just like the big city surrounded with the poor, homeless, hungry people looking for the chance to survive, like the rest of the cities all over the world.👉May GOD give them the better future.❤❤❤ Surasak Bangkok Thailand
In the old cafe' at a quarter past eleven,, the clock actually shows a quarter past ten or am I missing something here!????!Love the song,, the era, the lyrics and the ambiance, love it ,, love it ,, love it,,!!XX
My old fella ww2 vet identified to this tune.🎵…Not a well man and only managed to stay with us until 1979 …Died aged 53. Before his time. 🕰️.Rest in peace Dad ✊
Sad times this song bought back memories when I was a youth and you saw people living the way they did on street corners it's so so sad we live in a country that's not poor this shouldn't be happening. These people need help and if I could afford to help them I would with pleasure. Sad
This should be sung as an anthem in schools, churches, caring for others is what life is REALLY all about. We are a global family. There is no room for violence or aggression.
Mancheste have pulled togwther and so can you and so can we. we have learned but sometimes it takes something more to pull us all together. london rocks and dont forget it xxxx
So so poiniant, n always to this day still reaching out to those that need it most.now more than ever, don't walk past them....see if they need just a cup of tea n a hug x
if only I could turn the clock back........gees we were young then and didn't know these songs would become our lives songbook. Nice to look back though
I was a student at Warwick Uni in the old days when as a special,, Ralph on stage... wonderful. Yes it goes back a few years Some pillock worse for wear on boose shouted at him a number of times until Ralph said, from the stage, I'll meet you outside bastard. The pillock melted...but the respect for Ralph was a sensation. From that day I love this guy I really annoyed my wife one day when I saw a disheveled man begging, I sat down beside him and we talked for maybe an hour.......That man could have been me...there but for fortune. THEN I really upset marital harmony as I gave all our shopping !!!! and said to wife well we can buy it again....he cant. Ralph you have stirred in people the care and love for others....I do wish it was the same today
Ralph's second recording of this. From his album "Streets"..he wanted to do it this way ever since his '69 original, which was a solo, almost a demo..the accompaniment here hits the spot, just perfect, and sadly it's hard to find this best version these days..listen to the beauty.

Struan Robertson my late father was also a merchant seaman sir god bless

A true classic and one of the best melodies i have ever heard.
Thankyou
An exquisite musical masterpiece, I loved this as a child, and I still do.
He has a lovely voice. Love this song. Thanks for sharing Nov 1, 2019 from Malaysia
Saw and heard Ralph play this live when he supported The Everly Brothers in 1987. Great song.
Whoa! Must be surreal to hear "streets of London" and "wake up Little Suzie" on the same bill...!

aint that the truth brother
Your right mate, loneliness is a different thing completely to poverty. Both are terrible things to have to live with.
id rather be lonely in a mansion than on the street.
There’s none so blind, than those that see, never walk past anyone without a smile or a hello. I was once in a room full of people at Christmas, but so lonely, my lovely husband a serving soldier was doing his duty for queen and country. God was I so alone.

Being homeless twice for over twenty years combined this song means so much, makes me so great full for what I have now
this always makes me cry when i hear it
it was our leavers song at my primary school and it always brings back so many memories
Have you seen the old man
In the closed-down market
Kicking up the paper,
With his worn out shoes?
In his eyes you see no pride
Hand held loosely at his side
Yesterday's paper telling yesterday's news
So how can you tell me you're lonely,
And say for you that the sun don't shine.
Let me take you by the hand and lead you through the streets of London
I'll show you something to make you change your mind
Have you seen the old girl
Who walks the streets of London
Dirt in her hair and her clothes in rags?
She's no time for talking,
She just keeps right on walking
Carrying her home in two carrier bags.
So how can you tell me you're lonely,
And say for you that the sun don't shine.
Let me take you by the hand and lead you through the streets of London
I'll show you something to make you change your mind
In the all night cafe
At a quarter past eleven,
Same old man sitting there on his own
Looking at the world
Over the rim of his tea-cup,
Each tea lasts an hour
Then he wanders home alone
So how can you tell me you're lonely,
Don't say for you that the sun don't shine.
Let me take you by the hand and lead you through the streets of London
I'll show you something to make you change your mind
Have you seen the old man
Outside the Seaman's Mission
Memory fading with the medal ribbons that he wears
In our winter city,
The rain cries a little pity
For one more forgotten hero
And a world that doesn't care
So how can you tell me you're lonely,
And say for you that the sun don't shine.
Let me take you by the hand and lead you through the streets of London
I'll show you something to make you change your mind
Stunning song. Has never left me from being a child.
We don't realize how good we have it and how fortunes can change overnight.

He would probably get the sack if he did it these days, for deviating from the curriculum or some sort of bullshit.
What means “Punks and Herberts“?
Fantastic, thanks for sharing. This is what the kids need , something a bit different

poignant and beautiful loved this as a kid and even more now
A lot of people commenting have scarcely ever slept out on the streets in their lives. Nor have they gone up and down on night buses. It is, actually, quite invigorating to be out and is preferred by quite a substantial number of people as a way of life. When you are on the streets you are not just a number.
Deep, like a worm's grave.
indeed pix, but the uncertainty of that lifestyle can wear thin.
I've been out on the "streets" quite a few times "skip diving" for food !
have you
??????????????????????????

after all lifes troubles and strife has gone you realise life has so much to offer...just remember what made you today can never be taken away... love life and be strong..... its not always dark at six :)

a sad yet such a great song. its relevance in todays and yet yesterdays society too is bang on. nobody should be homeless cold or left to just decay away. this should be a Christmas number 1. not a poxy Xfactor winner. id buy this in a heartbeat..
LONDON was just like the big city surrounded with the poor, homeless, hungry people looking for the chance to survive, like the rest of the cities all over the world.👉May GOD give them the better future.❤❤❤ Surasak Bangkok Thailand

So hauntingly beautiful and so heartbreaking and it's still going on all over the uk in 2017.
Von 1974 da habe ich diesen tollen Song das erste Mal gehört...
Sad times this song bought back memories when I was a youth and you saw people living the way they did on street corners it's so so sad we live in a country that's not poor this shouldn't be happening. These people need help and if I could afford to help them I would with pleasure. Sad
timeless
This should be sung as an anthem in schools, churches, caring for others is what life is REALLY all about. We are a global family. There is no room for violence or aggression.
Mancheste have pulled togwther and so can you and so can we. we have learned but sometimes it takes something more to pull us all together. london rocks and dont forget it xxxx
So so poiniant, n always to this day still reaching out to those that need it most.now more than ever, don't walk past them....see if they need just a cup of tea n a hug x

I've got a lump in my throat now. That brings home the true meaning of the lyrics!
LIVED THERE IN KILLBURN LONDON 1969 THIS SONG STILL MEANS SO MUCH. THERE BUT FORTUNE
Good song. Little Tell from Switzerland ...
Always brings a tear to my eyes.
Have not lived in London for 46 years but it still haunts me
i've lived in London for 46 years and still haunts me
if only I could turn the clock back........gees we were young then and didn't know these songs would become our lives songbook. Nice to look back though
I was a student at Warwick Uni in the old days when as a special,, Ralph on stage... wonderful. Yes it goes back a few years
Some pillock worse for wear on boose shouted at him a number of times until Ralph said, from the stage, I'll meet you outside bastard.
The pillock melted...but the respect for Ralph was a sensation. From that day I love this guy
I really annoyed my wife one day when I saw a disheveled man begging, I sat down beside him and we talked for maybe an hour.......That man could have been me...there but for fortune.
THEN I really upset marital harmony as I gave all our shopping !!!! and said to wife well we can buy it again....he cant.
Ralph you have stirred in people the care and love for others....I do wish it was the same today
Que musica maravilhosa. Muito sentimento, sensibilidade
An ageless song thanks.
Michael
Beautiful song.
Ralph's second recording of this.
From his album "Streets"..he wanted to do it this way ever since his '69 original, which was a solo, almost a demo..the accompaniment here hits the spot, just perfect, and sadly it's hard to find this best version these days..listen to the beauty.
