    That “spike” is called INDUCTIVE KICKBACK and it’s often prevented by adding a reversed bias flyback diode. Pinball machines are notorious for blowing the transistors that drive the coils in the game... same reason.

    Thanks for this. Explains why my coils are failing one by one right after I changed my 230,000 mile plugs and wires on my Avalanche.

    FORD knew the 2002 F150 had bad DPFE sensors. Their solution was to cancel the sensor from setting a code. But these faulty DPFE would open the EGR valve while engine was too cold to handle it. Lean condition would ensue and the spark would not ionize so the COP sought an easier path internally and fry itself. Nice, real nice. I went through a bunch of them. Took me a while to connect those two things together.

    • @davidbsac
      @davidbsac 4 года назад +2

      EGR does not cause a lean condition. Exhaust is an inert gas and therefore cannot possibly lean out a mixture. If anything it can enrich the mixture somewhat. EGR does cause a misfire, but that leads to unburned fuel. Unburned fuel has low electrical resistance and the coil will not need to work hard to fire those plugs.

    • @davidbsac
      @davidbsac 4 года назад +1

      @silverbird58 Today's emission and fuel economy rules would never allow points and condenser. They're too inefficient and inaccurate for timing control. And Points needed to be replaced every 12-15K miles. Modern systems are mostly trouble-free for 100K miles.

    • @theGADGETSplaylist
      @theGADGETSplaylist 4 года назад +1

      @@davidbsac Faulty DPFE was causing an open EGR. That is unmetered air and can cause a lean condition.

    I have a 2005 Pontiac Vibe. I have had the same coil pack die three times in the last 4 years. I replaced the plugs about 2 years ago and the Vibe doesn’t have a wire set. Does anyone have an idea why that might be happening?

    • @textbook2o11
      @textbook2o11 4 года назад +2

      What did the plug look like when you pulled it out? Where is your engine ground located, and is it in good shape? Is there anything near that coil (exhaust manifold, etc) that could cause it to overheat while it operates?
      If the problem isn't related to one of those three things, I'd start to look upstream at the ignition control electronics. Maybe they are damaged and passing excessive voltage to the coil. It may be economical for you to simply buy a new coil pack every once in a while from RockAuto and DIY replace as needed.

    • @davidbsac
      @davidbsac 4 года назад +1

      Oil causes misfire conditions but rarely causes a coil to fail. If anything the coil isn't working as hard when the tube fills with oil.

      Sounds like a short in a/c somewhere and it’s back feeding or your alternator may not be strong enough to run it all, so when you turn it on it pulls the motor and voltage down to far
