Had to come back. Working on mine right now. Barely fit a .28 in it.😂 I’m gonna definitely need front brakes on mine. 4 horse power plus 12 pounds of steel!
that's awesome. if you go with the AWD option, you can let the center diff brake do all of the work but if you go with the RWD route, you'll def need some front brakes. Good luck. Let me know if you have any questions.
You should be extremely proud of this build. It looks amazing and although we are all limited by time, funds or ingenuity and to a further degree tools. Its a very nice acompmishment front break system is phenomenal. I started a custom crawler build but not to this degree. Nice vid, great job guy, enjoy the hobby!
Just watched this video, and I am completely blown away!! Joseph, huge respects to you for doing that, honestly! I've been trying to design and build a trophy truck too, and I have done a few CAD designs and hand drawings of a chassis, I feel like I'm a bit stuck though. Fact is, I'm planning to base my design on the Camburg chassis as well. And I also planned to use the Axial Yeti dimensions because that's what I have in my fleet. But I'm really running into a few problems. So I would be really grateful if you could help out with your experience. First problem being the dimensions and angles of the tubes for the cage to be brazed all together. As it's going to be my first time brazing a cage, I feel a bit intimidated, and don't really know how to get started, lengths of the tubes, what angles they need to be positioned at..etc. So if you wouldn't mind, and I know it's a big ask, but do you have schematics of your cage I can get via PM? I would very much appreciate it, and would be able to learn more of how it's done, and use it as a guideline. Either way, I really look up to you for doing this build! Great job!
Thanks Joseph, I appreciate the help! And I think I've slowly sorted out the problems now, including the cage geometry, wheelbase, width, angles. But if I run into any further problems, I'll let you know!
Such an awesome video! I'm still working on mine. Going the aluminum flat sheet stock for mine. Have the dowels so when ready, I'll start a tube build like yours! I work in engineering so yeah, Mcmaster is indispensable in my life!!! 12 lbs for a steel tube frame is not bad, AT ALL!
Nice! If you want the matt look without the scratches paint the shell on the inside as normal and then just use a Flat lacquer on the outside. Either Tamiya's one or any acrylic base lacquer :)
Very nice. Been thinking of doing one of my own at somepoint. Nitro 2wd is where my roots are. Its a shame nitro 2wd is on the downturn for popularity when it comes to the race scene..
agreed. wish I had a place to run my truck in nitro mode locally. Lately I have been running it at a construction site and it would be ideal for nitro, but the fact that I shouldn't be there in the first place keeps me running it in electric mode hoping not to draw attention.
Richard Denson that would be awesome. He’d drive circles around me I’m sure. He’s built several trucks over the years and knows what he’s doing. My one-off truck hardly puts me in the same class as Cyconxc. Would be fun to see the trucks in action together.
I love the video! I’m building a traxxas slash trophytruck/ prerunner and I want to do a solid axle in the rear, do you know a 1/10 Axle that is wide enough to fit a slash?

Nice build , why have a front diff when you have no dogbones up front, have you got brakes on the rear, I have never seen them on tenth scale. I have hydraulic on my 5th scale Trophy Truck's and my Class 1 buggy along with my two Ultra 4's. I run the same tread pattern on the HPI Baja's they are stock fitment on the HPI Baja 5T front and work very well, you could extend the side bars through the body as some full scale have foot holes with the bar coming through or level with the body. I try to get my fifth scale vehicles to look as scale as is possible there are not many parts to do so, so most is just done with wheels, tyres and the bodies paint and trim with decals. Funny you should mention fire extinguishers that is about all that is available for 5th or 6th scale vehicles, I use a lot of parts from boats and aircraft for fuel fillers, breathers and mounts. It will be interesting to watch how the truck will handle and top end, no one to my knowledge is running a nitro Trophy Truck or Buggies in tenth or eighth.
Hey Nick. I designed the truck to work with the NTC3 front diff so that if I ever decided to add a couple dogbones I could run the truck in 4WD. Right now I'm having fun with the current 2WD setup, but the option is there. I do have a center diff brake for the rear wheels, but it wasn't enough so I designed and implemented the front brakes. They help significantly. I agree, the side "nerf" bars could extend through the body and the thought did cross my mind, but that would mean more cuts in the body to crack and fail after abuse. I still haven't gotten to the whole scale look yet. I did add some button-looking pieces to resemble the zeus fasteners they use to attached the black body panels.
Pro-line shocks are nice quality, however, two of the four seem to leak more than the other two. Not a big deal, just makes for a muddy mess on the shafts after some running. I'm running 30wt all around, but by no means is my truck dialed in. I'm still trying to understand its handling characteristics. I'm using the Losi gold spring set for the Ten-T and Ten-SCT (LOSB2962)
The front is a piece of 1/2" x 1/2" steel tube that I cut up and added a few holes in. It's "welded" to the cage. The rear mounts were flat steel plates I carved up, drilled and also welded to the cage. Check here for more detailed photos: ruclips.net/video/lt5-jTo4WkU/видео.htmlm21s

I don't believe they make a 2.2 version, only a 2.2/3.0. I do have the BFGs from my Yeti Score and they did help. I was hoping to find a really good 2.2 wheel that has good bite. I may have to swap over to some plastic 2.2/3.0 wheels here soon.
Joseph Stampfl afaik Losi, Hot Racing for Slash and Tekno hv springs, but some also say they arent exactly 16mm. Im building a custom TT atm, looking for spring setup for Powerstroke too.
More than I care to share. This is a hobby build, so the costs add up over time... the key phrase is "over time" so you can spend as you have available funds. Baja Rey is the cheaper way to go if you have the cash on hand, however, then it won't be custom or nitro.
@@JosephStampfl 😂fair enough. I am now four months in and I see what you mean. I do have a rolling chassis, but man it added up quickly lol. @@carsonw722 great to hear! Yup, these builds are not cheap. I used to keep track of every expense but stopped after it got to be too much $$$ to rationalize. And thanks, can’t wait to get this back out in the dirt.
@@JosephStampfl I was hoping for one to be built for me for under 300, or if I could ask someone to do it for under 300. I always mess up these type of things 🥲😂
Gotcha - get on the forums and ask around. I'm sure someone can give you a price to do it. Mine took more hours than I can count. Probably over a hundred hours to design it and build it. There's a lot of work that goes into these custom metal tube framed chassis - materials alone will cost money but the time need to properly build a cage is the killer.
Initially as a nitro TT, probably around $1,200, not including electronics which I already had. Add on all the misc. stuff I did to make it even better/stronger and then convert it to electric... would rather not think about it.
Is there a reason you couldn't run 4wd ? 2wd is so difficult to drive especially with a locked diff. I ran a 2wd Slash for speedruns that weighed probably close to 12lbs ,you might want to to a look at the Traxxas GTR/Revo shocks. Although they are ugly since the Revo springs were inboard (Indy car style)the have a lot of tension. (double black)springs. Not sure but GTR's shocks from the rear Slash 4x4 platinum are available in XXL length. Might have enough travel ,but the Revo springs should have more than enought stiffness.
Thanks, for the feedback, Nate! I didn't go into it in the video, but the truck is setup with a front diff. The only thing stopping the truck from being 4WD is a center dog and two front dog bones. I will say though, this truck is very difficult to drive in the dirt, but am still really enjoying the 2WD setup so for now the dog bones stay out. Since making this vid, I've got a lot more "time behind the wheel" and I think I have the suspension where I want it.. for now. One thing to note, to your disappointment, is I've since converted the truck to electric. The transmissions are still exactly the same, however, I made a mount for an electric motor and am using Tekno’s “Elektri-Clutch Adapter” to spin the flywheel and clutch bell. In a nutshell, backyard bashing with my daughter and her electric buggy was becoming a lot less fun with the nitro setup. Too loud and messy and too many things to carry.
Ithought about it after the fact that the front diff and rear axle might have different ratios. I your looking for custom dogbones you might want to try Castlerock machine in Maine. He's kinda been busy ,but he makes that type of stuff for RC's.
I've thought about the ratio situation, but haven't looked into it. If they are too far off I will have to stick with the 2WD setup - which I'm fine with. As for the dogbones, I made sure to design the setup with nice round numbers, ie: 90mm fronts with a 120mm center (or something like that)

The springs came from a Losi 10T. Came as a set front/rear: LOSB2962
