+stlouisrocker100 I only saw the second half of the movie, but I have to say it is entertaining and quite good on a subject matter. Especially if you were to see the beginning of it and have the understanding of Jane, then you can really connect to the movie. So yeah you are not the only one XD
+stlouisrocker100 Me too, I liked it even more after reading the book, it has a lot of scenes taken directly from it, specially the ending with grown up Wendy.
I remember loving this movie when I was younger, but now that I see it, I can definitely see it's problems. However, I do feel like this takes advantage of it's situations. The story about Jane growing up during the war feels like a much more drastic reason as to why she isn't happy. The whole "I don't believe in fairies" is actually done really well, and emotionally too. Probably my favorite part of the movie is the ending, mostly because of the interaction between Wendy and Peter Pan. That's something that, for the longest time, only existed as legit fan fiction: what if Peter Pan sees adult Wendy? It was done well, and I say is the biggest highlight of the movie, mostly due to exactly that. It's probably one of the better Disney sequels that gets crapped on just because it IS a Disney sequel. If you haven't seen it yet, give it a watch! Heed Doug's advice and give it a chance.
+Not Markiplier I like this film but the biggest problem is the setting not that WWII is a bad setting it's just not accurate if this was in the real Pan universe it would have to be WWI not WWII
+Dejay Page Disney's Pan is set where everyone else is (expect maybe Peter Pan and the Pirates , Wendy has that flapper hair cut but that can't be because in one of the episodes it says that cars would be a new thing to them anyway) Peter Pan is set in the late 1800's at earliest to more accurately the early 1900's because Peter Pan was set in a modern setting by Barrie's generation the original play came out in 1904 and Peter and Wendy the book came out in 1911 and the Davis boys fought and I think one died in WWI so yeah this should be WWI not WWII
+Peter Pan If Peter Pan took place in the 1900s (or early 1910s at the latest), I can actually buy the sequel taking place in WWII because it is thirty years later and it does work with Wendy's older age (probably an older mother who had Jane and her little brother in her thirties).
Not only "fan fiction", but in the original book. Wendy and Peter do met when Wendy grew up and is a mom. And he actually comes to meet Jane and take her to Neverland.
Personally, I find that criticism of a story to be a bit strange. After all, to what extent does a tale *need* to exist? There are certainly some stories whose existence you are more grateful for than others but a utilitarian approach doesn't work. Also, your choice of adjective for the critics reaction was just perfect, Doug XD
Not gonna lie, I felt this movie was very respectful to the original and told the opposite story. The original was about Wendy having to learn to grow up while the sequel was more about Jane learning to be a child The only disappointment was removing the crocodile.
@@watchforever1724 I think it's important. Cause there's so many people and children who grew up in traumatic situations and end up losing their childhood and spirit because of it. I like how it's an opposite to the first movie, where it shows that it's okay to grow up, the sequel shows how it's okay to tap into your inner child despite every hardship you faced. That part of you will always be alive.
To be fair, I always liked this sequel more than the first one, seriously. It was more serious, the characters were more down to earth, and the songs didn't disturbed me that much because I watched it with the latin dub.
Funny enough, my family has this and a ridiculous amount more of these direct-to-DVD movies on a shelf in the master bedroom; I sometimes talk them into playing one every so often, and I think "Wait, _this_ was the movie? I remember this being better than that." I guess young me wasn't too picky. :P
same with my family not all the movies were bad this one was grand but I watched recently and a problem I had was if it takes place maybe 1939 and the first one was around 1900 when she was 10 so in this movie she should be around 40 which is too to have kids based on the time
This is one of the few Disney sequels that I think is on par with the original. The original is a classic and can't be topped, but you can tell there was legitimate effort put into this.
I've seen this flick in the theatres when I was a kid and boy, those shots with the flying ship, the atmosphere... It was so good. Years later I rewatched the movie immediately after the original and it really showed me how different they are.
Wait, the Crocodile is gone in this movie? I always thought the Crocodile turned into the Octopus because of some strange magic spell. I only saw this movie once years ago, but it made sense to me as a kid.
Hmmm, you know what, I'm just gonna headcanon that that's what happened, cause even as a kid I never understood why there was suddenly an octopus instead of a crocodile.
I'm so happy that this got a good review and wasn't roasted , when growing up instead of disney princesses peter pan was my favorite movie i loved the book and watched Japanese version too and instead of waiting for a prince and getting married i was waiting for peter pan to take me to Neverland , never grow up and have amazing adventures and this sequel was a fresh surprise and gave me nice nostalgic feeling and excitement.
Russell Jordan it's called adventures of peter pan and it used air on fox kids a long time ago , well considering his other sequel reviews this was on the positive side 😂😂😂
From what I've heard, at the end of Peter Pan (the book, I think ), Peter takes Wendy's daughter, Jane, to Neverland, then Jane's daughter and then her daughter and so on as they come back and grow up and have a family of their own. That just makes me sad thinking about how Peter is always alone.
There’s a sad scene in Hook where Wendy says “Peter, I can’t come with you. I’ve forgotten how to fly. I’m old, Peter. Ever so much more than 20. I grew up a long time ago. I have children of my own now and they have children of their own. That’s my grandchild, Moira asleep in the bed.” That is just heartbreaking for Peter.
The one thing I HATE about this movie is that they didn't get Kathryn Beaumont (the original Wendy) to do adult Wendy. She's still alive and still voices Alice and Wendy in literally anything Disney asks her to (like Kingdom Hearts or the teacups at Disneyland). They actually did have her record lines for this, and then they changed the story, but for SOME reason didn't ask her to record the new lines. So instead we have the normally great Kath Soucie doing a godawful British accent. Why didn't they ask Kathryn back??
I know! I forget the reason she didn't return, but now that I know her and her voice, I wish she would have! Kathryn has since re-voice young Wendy in the Kingdom Hearts games.
I’m guessing that Kathryn probably couldn’t do a proper-sounding adult Wendy. And yes, I know that she played young Wendy that same year in Kingdom Hearts, but if she used that same voice, it would sound weird coming from a grown-up.
Fun Fact: Ms. Beaumont had recorded some of her lines for Wendy, but her voice had aged and was sounding too old at that point, so Disney had no choice but to replace her with Kath Soucie, and this was back when studios replaced voice actors out of necessity because the old actors were either deceased or too old to reprise their roles.
I am super sad that Treasure planet didn't do good on theaters it's easily one of my favorite disney movies ever, but the good thing of it not doing good is that they didn't force an unnecessary sequel.
Yea and I don’t think the writers did their research cause I read a thing from the show that said “A good pirate never takes another person’s property”.
I remember seeing this in theatres and I thought the animation when the pirate ship goes over the house to get Jane was absolutely spectacular. Just those few seconds made me love the movie.
One of my favorite Disney sequels. For all the parts already mentioned, and damn it, I love that main theme. Thanks for finally showcasing the best of this movie.
You know, as a kid, I hated this movie a lot. But now that I'm older, I can see that it's not as bad as I thought. But if kid me hated it... no wonder it didn't do so well.
I was sorta the same with "The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea", but nowadays, I still don't think its that good of a sequel, and yeah a lot of the problems it caused were mostly Ariel's fault for not doing the smart thing and just telling Melody about her mermaid heratige (my spelling stinks), but on the other hand Melody is in a way kind of a better version of Ariel in certain aspects. For one thing, her motivation was a lot more reasonable. She wanted to go into the ocean because that's where a good chunk of her family tree comes from, whereas Ariel traded her vocal cords and legs and out all of the sea in danger all just to fuck a dude she just met. Also during the climax, Melody puts herself and all of the sea in danger, but also put herself in danger to save everyone she put in danger , whereas Ariel took a back seat while Eric stabbed Ursula with a boat. Though the issue with the "TLM2" is that it didn't need to be an obvious repeat of the first film. A lot of it is just a lazy repeat of the original. The only difference is that when Ariel finds out that Melody has been in the ocean, she doesn't wreck Melody's shell collection, so at least she got that right, but still a lot of it was just a repeat and it doesn't even try to be subtle about it. Also did you know that both "Little Mermaid 2" and "Return to Neverland" both got PS1 video game tie-ins?
This is my personal favorite Disney Sequel. Gotta be honest i actually cried when Peter Pan meets Wendy again after all these years. Now i never wanna grow up, I'm already 15
I watched this movie for the first time literally last night, and as a semi-cynical 16-year-old, it was freaking hysterical. There were just so many moments that had me cackling into my couch because they just seemed built to my very strange and undefined sense of humor. Not to mention that I actually got a little teary-eyed at the part in the beginning after Jane fights with her family and then cries in front of her door, because I've genuinely done that so many times! I just wanted to give her a hug in that moment. I also like the addition of the octopus, if for no other reason than they worked in the "tick tock" noise basically by having it stim. Oh yeah, and the thing I kept repeating over and over to myself amidst laughter is that they gave Peter the Danny Phantom treatment. I can't really explain what that means but I think if you've seen the show you'll get it, just something about the vibes. I did admittedly think the animation was kinda weird, but I think that's mostly just because it was so different that the original movie (and I definitely understand why it was different). Honestly I really just thought this was a fun movie and I think that's partly because it went so well with my sense of humor. I wish I'd watched it sooner, and I'll definitely watch it again!
the song in this movie "I'll Try" by Jonatha Brooke is actually one of my favorite disney songs. it's extremely emotional, and is an amazing song to monologue what Jane is going through. Plus Jonatha Brooke (I don't know how famous she really is/was, I only know her for this song) has an amazing voice that isn't raspy or sounds "tortured" at all. It's a beautiful song. They even had Jesse McCartney cover it for a Tinker Bell movie (although the original is so much better).
This movie is actually surprisingly good. I thought I would start to hate it rewatching it after years. Yes there’s still some issues I have with it, but overall good story. Stuff I didn’t like: -How they made Hook from gorgeous and funny to a dull and stupid -they made the lost boys sooo pointless and annoying -the squid; like are you serious? He’s making the exact same noise reminding us of the crocodile. No originality of the character. What I liked: -The animation, wow -the story -reunion between Pan and Wendy -”I’ll try”
+Keyblade Soul Lord One of my favorite Disney sequels. For all the parts already mentioned, and damn it, I love that main theme. Thanks for finally showcasing the best of this movie. TBH, as much as I love Peter Pan lore, the original is a bit dated now in hindsight.
Can we talk about how the musical Score, for being in a Disney Sequel. Is AMAZING and heartfelt, and calls back to the original film in parts that fit just perfectly
Yes we can, and we should. Joel McNeely doesn't score that often, but when he does, he knocks it out of the park. He captures an amazing balance of being large and sweeping, but still demonstrates a theoretical knowledge and control over orchestration that keeps it from feeling bombastic or schamltzy. And the orchestra must have adored it, because their performance is top-notch. And I think Disney must've realized how good it was, because I mean, how many other diesney sequels had score album releases?
I like this movie. One of the better Disney sequels. The brief reunited exchange between Peter and Wendy at the end was so heart warming, yet so heart wrenching at the same time. That is NOT easy to do.
Oh my gosh. Doug. With your voice analyzing everything, and that super serious dramatic music in the background an not hearing all the corny music and one liners, you would almost have my subconscious feel like this was a serious PG 13 movie, a Disney for adults. Not HBO's Spawn, not pervy anime, but like something that is VERY Disney but also VERY mature at the same time. Can you imagine if Disney animated PG 13 movies with the same Quality as Beauty and the Beast, Lion King, or Aladdin? And it still feels very Disney, not a perversion of Disney but a realization of the genre growing up.
ACEnBEAKY definitely agree with you there, if they wanted to try something like that though I feel like doing it with a kingdom hearts movie would be an awesome idea.
ACEnBEAKY this is actually a great idea that would earn a lot of respect. Like it would allow more intense moments so they wouldn't be forced to cut out moments because it isn't child friendly. They'd have a lot more room to talk about the darker side of the Disney universe
Ehh, I don't agree with him there. I've come to love the pop songs in the movie. Maybe I'm a dork, or maybe they really are good songs. Though at the same time, I can see what he's saying. They didn't NEED to have pop artists sing during emotional scenes - emotional score would have probably been enough.
... This one of thew few, VERY few Disney sequels, hell maybe the only that I would like to see redone. Keep a lot of scenes and animate new ones replacing the stupid scenes. The crocodile being gone makes sense behind the scenes (they felt like they couldn't do anything funny with it anymore) but if you're going to replace him: Make it for a good reason, like he was caught and stuffed or something. The octopus would have been fine like that. Maybe get a new VA for Jane while we're at it I guess and make the scene between Wendy and Peter go for a little longer. Finally and ESPECIALLY, drop the fucking pop songs! Doug said it perfectly: They are painful, they are unwelcome and they are completely out of place! Orchestral music is just fine! Also, I don't understand why they didn't bring Kathryn Beaumont back for Wendy: She recorded the lines and then for no reason just replaced her. No disrespect to Kath Soucie, she's amazing but... SERIOUSLY! You had the original voice of Wendy AND Alice right there, still capable of doing those characters just fine but all she had to do was age it a little and again: SHE RECORDED FOR THE MOVIE and then they just replaced her... My God what a missed opportunity, a FORCED miss I might add -_- This movie had genuine potential and a lot of it was used but the small bits that weren't really held this movie back and it really frustrates me!
I guess if anything, the idea could be in regards of how something was being done just for the sake of being done without much thought going into it. Don't get me wrong, I agree that saying that "this didn't need to be made" is a dumb argument point to have, but one could argue that people would say that if in a situation where nothing really gets added in the end. Best example I can think of would be the prequel star wars films. They are ok films, but you can have some people actually question the idea if Lucas really needed to make these films or not. You know what the end result is going to be, and it isn't like things aren't going to end well by the time things wrap up, so why watch it? That question is a bit open ended, but that is the tricky thing about doing sequels. On one hand, you can give the people what they want and allow the world to expand further out so that they can see more of "what happened after the story ended?" while on the other hand, you can just have a film that doesn't really add much and leave people asking that exact question, "Why did this need to be made."
*+mas8705* Agree with you. "Return to Neverland" didn't had to be made, but it isn't a torture to sit through... "Hunchback of Notre Dame 2" didn't had to be made and SERIOUSLY didn't had to be made because it fucking sucked. Some people were even pissed at the original for not killing Quasimodo like in the book, the sequel is a fucking fanfiction.
+DeepEye1994 Oh god is Hunchback 2 awful because the animation looks like crap (bright and flat), the story is stupid, the characters (new and old) are poorly written--it's such a disgrace to the original film because I love it so much.
Looking back now, this one could have almost worked better...with like 1 or 2 redrafts and taking out the stuff like the octopus and the dated pop songs
I liked the first movie more (possibly a bias towards Wendy), however Return to Neverland was definitely a good sequel... For a Disney sequel of that time that is.
I remember loving this film a lot when I was a kid. When you're small you really don't look at the micro things, like the plot loll, and look at the macro picture, like the atmosphere, the emotions etc. I dunno, I haven't watched it for years, but to this day "I'll try" still makes me tear up in nostalgia.
I'm really glad he liked this one. It's always been one of my favorites, I even remember my parents taking me to see it in theaters and I still own the VHS. Obviously, I'm allowed to like something even if no one else does, but it's nice to know I'm not the only one and that it's not just my nostalgia goggles being too tight.
One thing you didn't talk about, which impressed me even as a little kid, was just how expressive Jane was through the entire movie. She didn't have to say a word for you to find her incredibly likable and complex. (I had the biggest crush on her when I was 9)
Actually, the people who made this movie were super fans of Peter Pan, both the book and Disney's movie, and they tried they darn best to make this movie worth to be the sequel. There's a documentary about how it was made, and the decisions they took, and it's quite interesting to watch and see their passion put into this project.
I still remember going to see this in theaters. One of the few Disney sequels that I genuinely liked. In fact, I might just have to watch it right now. Lol
My only gripes: 1. It's a little bit too short. 2. I would've liked to have seen Michael and John show up and give Wendy some company as well as give someone for Jane to talk to outside her mom and brother. Plus, there was a missed opportunity to have Peter meet the Old Gang again.
+lunarsofi I know Doug said he's only do theatrical films, but he's probably gonna run out after this year. There's plenty of Disney sequels that could fill out December & they are noteworthy in Disney's history! It could work!
Pretty sure that will have to be the only route left to take after this year. You covered all the animated releases, all the Pixar films, the Studio Gibli films (with Gravity Falls Vlogs), and now all the Marvel/Stars Content. There isn't really much else one can actually expand on for Disney-cember unless if he went down a route or either: A) Direct to video sequels, B) TV shows produced by disney (and not the disney Afternoon, but perhaps TV shows like Zorro and so forth), or C) cover the development of Disneyland/Disneyworld or other theme parks.
+mas8705 What about Disney's TV Movies? Like Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella, Music Man, Annie, Once Upon a Mattress, High School Musical or Descendants?
Anton Spivack Suddenly my stomach hurts for some reason. I mean... Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the audience it was targeted for enjoyed those TV movies, and it is something that can be done too, but I kind of feel that if Doug would do those films, he'd have to devote a few months of Nostaglia critic to further detailing them; just like he did with princess diaries 2.
I loved it. Hook was made a lot more evil in this and the art is so improved. I do agree that the crocodile was a little better because he at least had a personality. I get that the Kraken is the most feared sea monster ever lived but the crocodile has always been the main predator towards Captain Hook! Even in Once Upon A Time, where there isn't an actual crocodile, Hook refers to his archenemy, Rumplestiltskin, as the crocodile! It's exactly the same as the tradition as the same actor who plays George Darling should play Captain Hook! However, the movie was great though. I enjoyed it, the characters and I even felt bad for Peter Pan when he was almost defeated. I always did say after watching Peter Pan that I wanted more and I love sequels.
I will give this movie credit for one thing....unlike a lot of the Disney sequels that are badly done carbon copies of the original, this one actually had a different story from the first Peter Pan that was actually kind of creative. In that one, Wendy was a child who didn't want to grow up so she went to Neverland. In this one, Jane is a child who has had to grow up way too soon because of a war, she is taken to Neverland against her will by Captain Hook, and she has to learn how to use her imagination and be a child again in order to get home. There is a legitimate threat to one of the characters when Tinkerbell is dying and it doesn't come from the villain...it comes from Jane when she says she doesn't believe in fairies. They didn't do that in the original Peter Pan. And Jane is the one who battles Captain Hook in this one whereas in the first one, it was Pan. And while granted there are things I don't like about this movie (the octopus and some of the songs) there are some genuinely heartfelt moments in this movie (like Jane realizing she was wrong and in the end when Peter sees Wendy again.)
Honest to god, this movie came out when I was like 5 or 6 and my god, I was so in love with it back then. I cried like little girl, which I was actually, each time I watched it and made by mom take me to cinema to see it like three times, because I liked it that much. So surprisingly enough, it's one of a few Disney sequels I did watch and have a memory of. It's not that good, but little me liked it very much, that's for sure.
The beginning was probably the best part. I don't know why but something about Captain Hook going into the real world and kidnapping her was so incredibly trippy for me as a kid
"It had no reason to exist." NO SEQUEL HAS ANY REASON TO EXIST! Nothing NEEDS a follow-up, and yet, we still want to see more. Even the greatest sequels of all time didn't need to be made, and just left to the imagination. We shouldn't criticize a sequel by saying it doesn't need to exist, when none need to exist. BTW: this is my favorite Disney Direct-to-Video sequel. It has problems, but I still have a soft spot for it.
My favorite part of this film is the "THIS IS THE HAIR I WON'T HARM!!!! Here, you keep it." It's just done so well! Very Captain Hook, and it makes me laugh every time!
4:58 The reason that the octopus exists was due to the reason Disney thought that they would exhaust their animation team having to come up with new ways to let The Crocodile chase Hook. So they invented the Octopus for a change of pace. The more you know
I hope he does all the sequels while most are absolute AWFULNESS some I actually enjoy and I really do want to hear his opinion even if he hates it. I never enjoyed Peter Pan in the first place I found it a tad too...uncomfortable as a kid I didn't like the fact this guy from a magical place would go inside your room and just do whatever, while in the sequel Peter saves Jane which is more likable for some odd reason I was never a fan of Pan. Maybe because he acts like a jerk especially to Wendy making me feel unwelcome in a movie considering I was closest to Wendy minus the posh and prim style.
+KanaTokisho My grandma used to read me the book when I was little and left me SCARED! Peter from the book is even more ass and really unlikeable. Also the ending I hated that ending with my soul. I was never a fan of Pan either.
+KanaTokisho I love how, unlike Wendy and all the other women in the Peter Pan universe, that Jane doesn't take Peter's crap. When he does something rude or stupid, she calls him out on it. Same with how Tinkerbell tried to kill her, unlike Wendy, she calls Tinkerbell out for being a murderous b*tch.
+KanaTokisho I don't blame you. When the mermaids were bullying Wendy, he was laughing hysterically, thinking Wendy was enjoying being in on (or the butt of) the joke. Actually, I think the first film was very cruel to Wendy. She began her siblings' obsession with Neverland, but when they get to actually go there, does she get to enjoy it? Not a chance! "Let Pan neglect you on the spookiest of cliffs while he rescues and dances with Tiger Lily, and get more firewood!!!"
+KanaTokisho As far as Disney sequel go, I used to love Pocahontas 2, because I actually learned that she really did go to England. However, I was also always sad about the end of that movie when she goes back on the ship to go home. It mad me sad, because I also knew that in real life, on her way home from England, she contracted Small Pox and died at the age of around 21.
I think the reason it received a lot of criticism is because it was a movie that was "too much" like the original but with a couple of tweaked elements and a new look. And that criticism is valid. However, I still believe "Return to Neverland" is the best Disney sequel simply because the new elements worked so well and they developed it perfectly. It's a very charming film that captures exactly what was good and beloved about the first film and made it more impactful in the second. It makes the experience actually refreshing and enjoyable.
I think what would have REALLY sold this for me is if they got Kathryn Beaumont to reprise her role. I wonder why they didn’t... I think you hit the nail on the head. The story itself was fine, the pop songs were very annoyingly distracting, but the final scene with Peter and Wendy was really fitting.
What I enjoyed about this sequel in particular is that it took from real history to show Jane growing up too soon. This was also part of "The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe." Children were moved out of London into the countryside to keep them safe.
Saw this one in theaters with literally no one else in the room except me and my cousin and sister, was a really odd experience to be in such an empty room with a movie like this, and honestly I think it hit me as a kid harder on the sad moments because of that. I remember not hating it as a kid and liking captain hook even more since he was one of my favorite villains growing up. That's all I got.
omg, Dough! Thank you. Peter Pan and the Pirates! I would had never remembered that if you didn't mention it. What a huge chunk of my childhood I had completely forgotten. Thank you!!!
This is actually one of my favorite Disney sequels. Others like Cinderella and the Christmas beauty and the beast (BTW Merry Christmas/Happy holidays every one!) I only have like one or two scenes that I like. And I think that It's because I was born in the 90's but the pop songs, especially the one played in the dramatic parts I actually like. Got me to tear up a bit at least. Because, like he said, you can feel that the people who made it actually enjoyed making.
I'm pretty sure that, for whatever baffling reason, I saw this movie before the 1953 classic, and remember really enjoying it. Having recently rewatched the 1953 movie, that opinion has changed, and now I do love the first movie over this sequel. But some of the fond memories I have with this movie continue to make me like it quite a bit.
So glad to hear that somebody else likes this movie! Honestly, I didn't even mind the music, although I completely understand what he's saying about it. As a child, I just never questioned it (and I'll Try by Jonatha Brooke still gives me feels every time). Of all the Disney sequels, I feel like this one ranks pretty high.
The only part of the movie people hated was Jane, but she didn't yell at her family on purpose, she had to grow up quickly because of the war outside, so it's a good story
I really dislike it when people dismiss girl characters who have moments of anger. It's like a cardinal sin when it's a woman but just expected when it's a man.
if we're being honest, most people shat on this movie because wendy didn't end up with peter (which was the point of the original movie, he didn't like her and she had to grow up) and he had some... moments with jane instead and wendy married someone else. obviously, people can simply not like the movie, but most of the hate towards jane was because of that and, like the comment above says, jane got angry and made mistakes, which apparently equals a bad character if said character is a girl.
My Mom and I used to watch Return to Neverland every Christmas. I don't know why, I mean it's not a Christmas movie or anything, but it was our weird little tradition. I think we may even start watching it again after seeing this review.
PipeGuy64Bit Perhaps, sometimes but if there is something his Ghostbusters review proved to me is that when he doesnt want to take a side, he will just go with the "its okay" and its happening waaaay more than usual.
If he's giving his honest opinion as himself, it's not surprising. I mean, you have to admit, the "mainstream" voices about whether a movie is "OMG SO AWESOME AND PERFECT" or "UGH THIS SUCKS, WHY DID THEY MAKE THIS SHIT" is usually very polarizing or a vocal minority that gives something too much credit as "the best thing ever" or "the worst thing ever." Most people, in general, do have an "it's ok" reaction. Or, even when watching something you don't necessarily like, you can still find SOMETHING you enjoy in it.
I remember seeing this in theaters with my dad, and I had no idea why I wanted to see this. I never liked the first Peter Pan, but for some reason I was intrigued by this movie. Even my dad doesn’t know why I wanted to watch this. This movie is one weird memory for me.
My favourite moment in this movie is when Peter sees grown-up Wendy at the window. Still brings a tear to my eye.
Also I always found Jane really annoying when I was a kid XD
No u in favorite you 2 brain cell nitwit
When i had 15, the moment when jane learn to fly gave me chills, and I was expecting a lame movie
Yey im not only
@@solitarychap me too
So I don't have to hide in shame anymore? I thought I was the only one who actually liked this one?
+stlouisrocker100 I only saw the second half of the movie, but I have to say it is entertaining and quite good on a subject matter. Especially if you were to see the beginning of it and have the understanding of Jane, then you can really connect to the movie. So yeah you are not the only one XD

You're not the only one. I actually like this movies and some Disney sequels.
+stlouisrocker100 i like it
"When it came out, it was panned." Cue me chuckling for two bloody minutes straight over a stupid pun that wasn't even intentional.
heh had to read that three times
Thanks for pointing it out! Now I can't stop!
Trey Forest god bless puns
Kudos XD Next time I go to a comedy club I'm bringing you along.
Trey Forest really? thankyou
1:54 Peterman is my favourite superhero.
Good character on Seinfeld, too.
Peter Man
Sounds like a hybrid of the names Peter Parker and Spider-Man. Peter-Man
Spider Parker by day, Peter-Man by night.
Nathan Peterman
I remember loving this movie when I was younger, but now that I see it, I can definitely see it's problems. However, I do feel like this takes advantage of it's situations. The story about Jane growing up during the war feels like a much more drastic reason as to why she isn't happy.
+Peter Pan unless Disney's was set during the 1920s...yeah, good point ;;
+Dejay Page Disney's Pan is set where everyone else is (expect maybe Peter Pan and the Pirates , Wendy has that flapper hair cut but that can't be because in one of the episodes it says that cars would be a new thing to them anyway) Peter Pan is set in the late 1800's at earliest to more accurately the early 1900's because
Peter Pan was set in a modern setting by Barrie's generation the original play came out in 1904 and
Peter and Wendy the book came out in 1911 and the Davis boys fought and I think one died in WWI so yeah this should be WWI not WWII
This movie was good, but I wish they showed a grown up John and MIchael
They're the extras that died in Dunkirk
Nick M they were probably fighting in the war
probably
true but since it's a Disney movie that takes place between 1939-1947 it is possible that they died during ww2.

OMG I loved this movie when I was little!! I still do!!
Well then something good came out of humanity, right Chara?
Greetings, Chara. Please don't kill me
Just Another Lazy Trash Panda aww same

Not gonna lie, I felt this movie was very respectful to the original and told the opposite story.
The original was about Wendy having to learn to grow up while the sequel was more about Jane learning to be a child
The only disappointment was removing the crocodile.
Agreed. The only disappointment was the crocodile. The lesson in this movie is great though. 💗
@@BratzRockAngels it’s fine
@@watchforever1724 I think it's important. Cause there's so many people and children who grew up in traumatic situations and end up losing their childhood and spirit because of it. I like how it's an opposite to the first movie, where it shows that it's okay to grow up, the sequel shows how it's okay to tap into your inner child despite every hardship you faced. That part of you will always be alive.
@@BratzRockAngels as a kid I thought the movie was fine not bad as people make it out to be
Agree. I didn’t like that the crocodile wasn’t in the movie.
To be fair, I always liked this sequel more than the first one, seriously.
It was more serious, the characters were more down to earth, and the songs didn't disturbed me that much because I watched it with the latin dub.
Coranort the voice of the girl (can't remember her name) was perfect in the latin dub!! I just simple love it!!
God, no.
Also, the first film had music that was popular at the time, didn't it? You Can Fly does kind of sound 50s, doesn't it?
Jane > Wendy
Yeah I said it
@@MILDMONSTER1234 Return To NeverLand > Peter Pan.
I said it 😊
Funny enough, my family has this and a ridiculous amount more of these direct-to-DVD movies on a shelf in the master bedroom; I sometimes talk them into playing one every so often, and I think "Wait, _this_ was the movie?
Mirth Mouser there was no crocodile. The crocodile was an octopus lol.
Totally not keemstar-ha-ha Bella Winmiill
Yeah, I know. But my version makes more sense to me at least. lol
Mirth Mouser yea, I understand. As a kid I think I thought something similar.
Y'know I think that as a kid I had actually thought that the octopus ate the crocodile or something strange like that.
It was my favorite too. Along with Mulan and the cartoon Alice In Wonderland.
this really wasnt that bad of a movie...
+supersmashbro596 thee are much worse direct to dvd sequels.
+Thomas Alvarez Id say the worst was Hunchback of Notre dame 2.
+K Damon I didn't even know they made a sequel to that movie.. Heck, I didn't even know about half of these direct-to-dvd movies
Sebastien Olibrice
just about every disney film had at least one. Heck, even Atlantis had one. They were like chicken pox.
+K Damon I'd say the worst was Lion King 1 1/2
"When it came out, it was panned."
[shows picture of Peter Pan]
It would have been so cool to see
Though that might be an blessing in disguise for her not to appear
I’m guessing that Kathryn probably couldn’t do a proper-sounding adult Wendy. And yes, I know that she played young Wendy that same year in Kingdom Hearts, but if she used that same voice, it would sound weird coming from a grown-up.
Fun Fact: Ms. Beaumont had recorded some of her lines for Wendy, but her voice had aged and was sounding too old at that point, so Disney had no choice but to replace her with Kath Soucie, and this was back when studios replaced voice actors out of necessity because the old actors were either deceased or too old to reprise their roles.
I am super sad that Treasure planet didn't do good on theaters it's easily one of my favorite disney movies ever, but the good thing of it not doing good is that they didn't force an unnecessary sequel.
aaaaaahhhhhhhh, how good it must feel to be naive.
actually I think the sequel they were planning for looked kinda good
Disney wanted it to fail so they could go more towards 3d animation and pixar style movies. It worked
@@NHLman27 you assume that

Hdofu Fox we NEVER talk about that show...NEVER
I remember seeing this in theatres and I thought the animation when the pirate ship goes over the house to get Jane was absolutely spectacular. Just those few seconds made me love the movie.
One of my favorite Disney sequels. For all the parts already mentioned, and damn it, I love that main theme. Thanks for finally showcasing the best of this movie.
When I was a kid this was one of my favorite movies.
I liked this movie as a kid, still like it now. Probably nostalgia :P
IMHO I loved Jonatha Brook's "I'll Try" it really hit home for me as someone who was dealing with a lot of depression after someone close to me died.
How could you not talk about the amazing score? It's so wonderful & nostalgic.
the song in this movie "I'll Try" by Jonatha Brooke is actually one of my favorite disney songs. it's extremely emotional, and is an amazing song to monologue what Jane is going through.
Man, am I early. Impressive for a turtle.
How
agree
I love that song "I'll try" because I can relate to the lyrics.
This movie is actually surprisingly good. I thought I would start to hate it rewatching it after years. Yes there’s still some issues I have with it, but overall good story. Stuff I didn’t like:
-How they made Hook from gorgeous and funny to a dull and stupid
-they made the lost boys sooo pointless and annoying
-the squid; like are you serious? He’s making the exact same noise reminding us of the crocodile. No originality of the character.
What I liked:
-The animation, wow
-the story
-reunion between Pan and Wendy
-”I’ll try”
Treasure Planet deserves more love.
I actually kinda liked the movie, while not as good as the first one, I actually liked it.
+Keyblade Soul Lord me too
+Keyblade Soul Lord One of my favorite Disney sequels. For all the parts already mentioned, and damn it, I love that main theme. Thanks for finally showcasing the best of this movie.
TBH, as much as I love Peter Pan lore, the original is a bit dated now in hindsight.
I liked it too.
Same, I like the idea of Wendy's daughter not believing in Peter Pan.
Oh my gosh.
I guess that's how a good Kingdom Hearts movie should feel?
ACEnBEAKY definitely agree with you there, if they wanted to try something like that though I feel like doing it with a kingdom hearts movie would be an awesome idea.
ACEnBEAKY this is actually a great idea that would earn a lot of respect. Like it would allow more intense moments so they wouldn't be forced to cut out moments because it isn't child friendly. They'd have a lot more room to talk about the darker side of the Disney universe
This is my favorite Disney sequel and is great. Wish it had more recognition.

My God what a missed opportunity, a FORCED miss I might add -_-
This movie had genuine potential and a lot of it was used but the small bits that weren't really held this movie back and it really frustrates me!
Janes VA is fine imo, I love the movie for what it is but if it got remade to fulfill it's full potential it would be top tier for sure
I actually enjoyed this movie as a kid. And honestly, I think this movie proves that there can be good Disney sequels.
What kind of argument is that something "didn't need to be made"? No movie ever "had to" be made. Seriously, that's a stupid thing to say.
IKR?? I hate it when people say that
It's about the same thing as "shouldn't have been made but we're not going to cry ourselves to sleep if it does".
Looking back now, this one could have almost worked better...with like 1 or 2 redrafts and taking out the stuff like the octopus and the dated pop songs
my sister got massively pisseeddd offf at this movie.
she hated how the dad came back rightttt after janes adventure.

1:54 ...Peter Man? If that's a superhero name, it doesn't do enough to conceal the identity.

1:54 Does Doug call him "Peterman"?
Yes he did 😆
Na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na Peter Man!
Yay! My ears weren't playing tricks on me!
I loved this movie when I was little. Must've seen it a 100 times together with my brothers
This was the first peter pan movie I saw
I still kinda love the moment when Jane is released from the bag and she just... decks Peter... amazing
the way he IMMEDIATELY gets she's definitely not wendy without even looking at her is hilarious
I still remember going to see this in theaters. One of the few Disney sequels that I genuinely liked. In fact, I might just have to watch it right now. Lol
Best thing to come out of this movie: the song "I'll Try".
My only gripes:
1. It's a little bit too short.
2. I would've liked to have seen Michael and John show up and give Wendy some company as well as give someone for Jane to talk to outside her mom and brother. Plus, there was a missed opportunity to have Peter meet the Old Gang again.
Doug's next Disneycember should be the other direct-to-video sequels!
I know right. if not, at least have a sequel month again
There isn't really much else one can actually expand on for Disney-cember unless if he went down a route or either:
A) Direct to video sequels,
B) TV shows produced by disney (and not the disney Afternoon, but perhaps TV shows like Zorro and so forth), or
C) cover the development of Disneyland/Disneyworld or other theme parks.
I'll Try is actually one of my favorites, not sure why but I really like it, it's a good song to play when you're sad.
My favorite part in this movie is when Peter seeing grown up Wendy.
It's not that good, but little me liked it very much, that's for sure.
this is probably my favorite sequal honestly
The beginning was probably the best part. I don't know why but something about Captain Hook going into the real world and kidnapping her was so incredibly trippy for me as a kid
Fun fact, this was my first peter pan movie
D:
Really?!
"It had no reason to exist."
NO SEQUEL HAS ANY REASON TO EXIST!
+KanaTokisho I really hope he does the Aladdin sequels, in particular the third one, to me, that was probably the best direct to DVD Disney movie.
+KanaTokisho
As far as Disney sequel go, I used to love Pocahontas 2, because I actually learned that she really did go to England.
I actually really like this movie
I know it wasn't intentional, but when he said the movie was panned, I thought he meant it as a pun.
I found it funny, anyway.
So.... there are good sequels outside of the Aladdin ones... interesting
Kyle Campbell Eh... I don't really like it but... yeah it's not bad
+SnesRulez - My Game World Also Little Mermaid 3 and Cinderella 3 are good.
pinky75910 Never saw them because both Little Mermaid 2 and Cinderella 2 where awful....
The Rescuers Down Under was one of my favourite movies as a kid.
simone robson That doesn't really count in the "DTV Disney Sequels"
I watched this when I was 5 and 8 years later I want to watch it again.
This, Ice Age and The Iron Giant were three films I used to watch all the time as a kid.
i definitely remember the scene at the end with Peter and Wendy, its remarkably mature and feels so right for the two characters.
This was the first thing Peter Pan movie I watched and was unaware that it was a sequel. So kid me likes this better.
That's all I got.
i could never look at these movies the same after knowing the original story.
omg, Dough! Thank you. Peter Pan and the Pirates! I would had never remembered that if you didn't mention it. What a huge chunk of my childhood I had completely forgotten. Thank you!!!
1:54 Butt Peter Man
This is actually one of my favorite Disney sequels.
When i was a kid i thought that squids and octopuses were the same animal.
This movie was my favorite in my childhood
I'm so glad you defended this one a bit. I watched this all the time when I was younger.
This is one of those Disney sequels that was actually pretty good
So glad to hear that somebody else likes this movie!
You know something I noticed? Doug seems to either go completely against what the mainstream or just go with the "its okay"...
He loved Shrek 2 so there are some exceptions.
I mean, you have to admit, the "mainstream" voices about whether a movie is "OMG SO AWESOME AND PERFECT" or "UGH THIS SUCKS, WHY DID THEY MAKE THIS SHIT" is usually very polarizing or a vocal minority that gives something too much credit as "the best thing ever" or "the worst thing ever."
Most people, in general, do have an "it's ok" reaction.
