For the China one: First, all the signage is very standardized in all major airports in China, so that was instantly a domestic Chinese airport based on the signs for gates, exits, etc. Second, all the people you saw were Chinese. The hairstyle on the younger guy is very Chinese if you live here, and that old guy at the end, same. The fact there aren't actually any foreigners here is a giveaway the opposite of what you were thinking (non-major city). The real clue though was the multiple stores with Sichuan (四川) in the name, especially the one with the ladies out front. Those stores indicate that you're in that province and they are selling touristy stuff for people to buy to take home/give as gifts wherever they are flying to. Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan and likely the only city that's going to have as modern an airport as you're seeing here. Very hard without knowing Chinese of course, but quite simple if you can. Also, side note that Shanghai does have two major airports if you're doing something like this again. Pudong (very east side of the city) is the bigger/major one, Hongqiao (more west, the one you picked) is also international but more domestic focused.
Even if you can't read Chinese, the logo of Sichuan Airlines was visible on the flight information panel. Sichuan Airlines flight to Shenzen is likely to be in Chengdu - although Chengdu also got two major airports, and in this case, it was the older and less busy one.
The departure board also showed the flight number so if you allowed yourself to Google that, you'd see it was a Chengdu-Shenzhen flight. As someone who has lived in China in the past, for me the most interesting thing is how good Tom is at recognising random foliage but then it seemed to take him ages to realise he was in a Chinese airport in spite of all the clues - just goes to show how different we all are.
The people looked like they were from PNG too, they have a distinctive look. That coupled with the not very touristy vibe, the foliage and the utes gave it away for me

Having lived in PNG years ago (in Lae no less) I was so confident the last one was PNG, and as you became more confident in Jamaica, I was thinking 'yeah he's probably right', only to get reaffirmed in the reveal 😅
The first time i saw the landscape and vechile type, i thought the same this is PNG, but when tom said Jamaica and lot of resort there i was thinking maybe he's right 😂😂
Jurassic Park was filmed in Hawaii. But I did think this last one was Polynesia somewhere, from my knowledge of the area. I was thinking Fiji or Samoa, based on the landscape and people, so not too far wrong.
As a Queenslander, my first thought for the PNG round was somwhere up in far-north Queensland (obviously ignoring the theme of the map) so PNG made a lot of sense at the end.
About the obscure country of East Timor (Timor Leste in Portuguese) , it is a former Portuguese colony, independent from 1975 so its likely to also find Christian churches and the street names are in Portuguese, easily identifiable by the “ão” in the end of many words. 😊
The opening shot of the second photosphere rather gave the game away - 四川 (Sichuan - ‘The Four Rivers’) - is a large province in Southwestern China. Chengdu its capital has an International Airport. The large signs in that duty free concourse said it was a Sichuan Speciality gift shop - Happy New Year :-)
Even without any knowledge of Chinese characters, it was clear given the near total lack of English signage that this airport was deep, deep inside China. No way in hell it was going to be Shanghai or Beijing fo example. That would've been enough for a decent guess, even checking major airports on the map for matching Chinese characters.
I didn’t play along but it was fun watching that last round. I used to live in Papua New Guinea, and when I saw that guy from above I thought he looked Melanesian and started suspecting PNG. Then I saw the Hevilift helicopter, which is one of the main ones they use there for mining and started being more sure. If you had zoomed in maybe it would have been possible to see the tail number that would have started with P2. But then you zoomed in on the beer advertisement and saw clear as day the bird of paradise. From there on it was just knowing that you were about to get completely wrecked.
The Helicopter defeintely deserved a lot more attention than Tom gave it. I could not make out P2 though, I thought it was PT or PY, of which PT would have put you in Brazil...
This is for sure one of my favorite type of maps. Managed to beat you for two of the rounds even, but did horribly in two of the ones you did good in. Round 1: Clocked the South Asian looking clothing but my gut feeling wasn't as sure on India or Pakistan for some reason. The landscape wasn't looking the part for me, so I went for the greener more mountainous northern parts of Iran, close to Tehran and got 1751 points. Round 2: Recognized the Chinese, clocked that it had to be an airport in a major city in Mainland China, and it had to be a relative distance away from Shenzhen, so it could not be Hong Kong or Guangzhou, and I was not picking up on any Beijing vibes. On a whim I decided on Chongqing Airport, which happens to be close enough to Chengdu to net me 4268 points. Round 3: Flubbered this one big time. I was convinced that mostly all of Europe has official coverage, including the East and there are no truly obscure Street View countries in Europe. So based on the Christian cross, small spread out towns and mountainous landscape, I just guessed it would have to be some obscure place in South America. I had never seen a Paraguay round so I decided on the mountainous parts of Paraguay. 13 points, big oof. Round 4: Easy, got it spot on. Went to Dili and found it within seconds. It helped here to know that "masjid" is just another word for mosque. Round 5: Had to guess completely based on vibes like you did, but my vibes sensor was picking up more on the South East Asia or Oceania looking foliage. Though instead of noticing the off-road cars clue which would point to somewhere less built up like PNG, I decided on Brunei as a wild guess. 569 points, so not a huge win on distance but at least I was roughly in the correct region of the world.
5:45 That's when I immediately knew where it was. The characters are the clue. Not just their form (which narrows it down to the country), but their meaning (which narrows it down to the part of the country). Red sign at 6:39 is a clue to the city.
That last one was rough. Jamaican cars are mostly Mitsubishis, Toyotas, Suzukis, and Daewoos imported from Japan, so they look totally different from the American models despite being near the Americas.
As soon as I saw all the Toyota troop carriers and tropical location that reminded me of far north Queensland my mind instantly jumped to PNG for the last one.
From the last one I could tell it wasn’t Caribbean. The cars and utes are very Australian, so to not travel too far they must be close to Australia. Also another reason as to why so much is in English. I have lived in Australia so that may be only something you would notice after living there but something to consider for future rounds. On the road they were driving on the left, Ik both PNG and Jamaica drive on the left but I did find it strange Tom didn’t mention it.
Timor Leste is only obscure if you're not portuguese since it was a former portuguese colony. "Leste" is a Portuguese word that means "east" and was adopted after the independence to distinguish the now independent country from the west side of the Timor island, which is still part of Indonesia. Also, the Santa Cruz cemetery massacre, executed by the occupying indonesian troups on the 12th of November 1991, was all over the news in many countries, not just in Portugal.
Having never been to any of the tropical island paradises, my first thought for the last one was an Australian tourist destination, along the lines of Bali. I guess PNG is a little more obscure, but still fits the bill. The landcruisers and hiluxes really gave it away for me.
I was wondering where I'd heard of the city of Lae, Papua New Guinea before and I remembered. That was the last city Emilia Earhart departed from before she disappeared.
the last round reminded me a round you were upon fire station in suriname. i thought it'll be same country. because of the dutch texts in suriname round and heineken advertisement in this one
Sitting in my bedroom, I did actually call PNG. Reasons - the cars looked very Australian, Lots of Toyotas, and a ute. The crocodile in the pool said it was more likely in Australasia than the Caribbean to me. The Germans had a bit to do with the founding of PNG from a western perspective hence the Heineken bits. And lastly, the place had the look of accommodations for a mining camp rather than a tourist operation. Not sure if that's what it is but just gave me that vibe.
Didn't expect to beat you on the challenge. I messed up the frist one, considered Punjab but thought you would see taller mountains on the horizon there. Went Shanghai just like you on the next one, lost two points on not getting the correct mountain (but for some reason instantly recognized Liechtenstein from the street layout of Schaan and the Rhine), perfect score on the mosque and at last I at least got the correct country. It looked Australian to me, but not too Australian, if that makes sense. That lead to a total just over 17k points.
Jurassic Park is hawaii. The famous scene where they arrived on the helicopter is the na pali Coast on kauai. Interesting fact, the place where the t rex takes the other dinosaur when they first arrive is the same place as Hurleys golf course in Lost
Interestingly enough I looked up the Tyler you called a fraud about Lichtenstein's straight line mission, and he's actually in a big controversy right now for doing "journalism" but editing problematic videos from completely different places to fit his narrative. Not surprised he was doing scummy stuff years ago as well but it's interesting you mentioned him with the current events taking place. Loving the geoguesser as always and I'm excited to hear your plans for the new year
Papua New Guinea (the south of it specifically) makes a lot of sense for the last one. A mixed colonial vibe of Dutch and English with the Heineken and dare I say the closest helicopter had the old Dutch flag with the orange instead of red (huge stretch), meanwhile they speak English. At the same time, the people were dark skinned without looking African, matching the native Papuans.
If you knew a bit of Chinese, the Chengdu airport would have been easier because the shop had 四川 = Sichuan province in the name. Also Papua New Guinea was my guess from a few videos I watched from the youtube channel "Missionary Bush Pilot." Transportation infrastructure there is almost non-existent so the helicopters, the barrels of aviation fuel, and the Australian vibe of the compound all suggested someplace like Papua New Guinea.
The last one looked like a worker's town, probably a mine or something near. I would have guessed Australia by the cars, but I think it's probably an australian owned business anyway
18550. the last round ruined my score. I was on for 23k but i went dutch west indies which was stupid seeing how high the mountains were. but very happy with my score as i only used about 30 seconds per round. cheers mate!
As a boy from the West Midlands, it was funny that you ended with the Crossroads Hotel. 'That's right Miss Diane, but we're a Motel not a Hotel'. Peace All
The only reason I knew it was Chengdu airport was the from the flight code-3U (Sichuan Airlines). I know that 3U departs to and from Chengdu, which is what made me realise it was that specific airport.
Those cars, and left hand drive, it seemed really obvious that it was either northern Australia or chain of islands above. I was hands in head as you got fixated on Jamaica. Oh and teh Croc in teh pool :)
I was also certain that the last one was a Caribbean Island...! Wow. And the Chinese cities I also get wrong all the time, as well. They all look alike. 😆 Thanks for another great round, keep them coming. 👍
To answer your question, Jurassic Park was filmed in Hawaii. The opening helicopter shot is famously an area near Hana on Maui. Those mountains definitely looked similar to Hawaii's so I was thinking more a tropical volcanic island in the Pacific for it. Obviously not Hawaii itself because America isn't an obscure country.
the filming locations for Jurasic Park were filmed on the island of "Kauai" in Hawaii which is far away from Jamaica, btw i love you'r geodetective serie's
I had an absolutely awful score this game, partly because I forgot to look for the photo-taker names and I habitually play all five rounds before watching Tom's video rather than going back and forth. The fourth round, of course, was easy to get close. Amusingly, though, my guess for the first round turned out to be almost the exact spot where the third round was. Unfortunately my third round guess wasn't in the right country either. Thanks for the game!
Hi Tom, the china one was a frustrating watch for me because if you knew how to read chinese, the very first shop you saw in the airport was called 四川特产 meaning Sichuan Specialties, Sichuan being the province and Chengdu being the capital city!
Are there often a bunch of Chinese people flying out to Shenzhen from London? Are things in London airports often written in Chinese? Sorry I’m not from there so I can’t understand *your* “moronic logic”. If they’d guessed based on that (very sound) logic they would’ve 5k’d. Clearly it’s not moronic lol

At the same time, the people were dark skinned without looking African, matching the native Papuans.
My guess is the PNG round will primarily be worker accommodation for fly-in fly-out mining or similar.
Yes - good shout! 👏🏻
Jurassic Park was filmed in Kauai, Hawaii. We were just there mid December and tbh it looks much different.
Jurassic park was film on Oahu at Kualoa Ranch. 50 first dates, tears of the sun and a bunch more movies were filmed there
Happy New Year, Tom. A few pounds here or there during the holidays is something we all needed, I think.
That last one seems like the compass directions were in correct. Jurassic park was filmed in Hawaii actually
The last one looked like a worker's town, probably a mine or something near. I would have guessed Australia by the cars, but I think it's probably an australian owned business anyway
"The mountains are a problem [for a straight line mission through lichtenstein]"... Well yeah, with that attitude! 😎
Do you want to prove him wrong?
*altitude
18550. the last round ruined my score. I was on for 23k but i went dutch west indies which was stupid seeing how high the mountains were. but very happy with my score as i only used about 30 seconds per round. cheers mate!
Fyi: The store you looked at so closely had these signs 四川 = Sichuan which Chengdu is the capital of.
Happy New Year to you.
Love it, Tom.
I love this map! Hope you had a great Xmas tom
The valley of Vaduz was a great one 👏🏻👏🏻
Happy New years Tom
As a boy from the West Midlands, it was funny that you ended with the Crossroads Hotel. 'That's right Miss Diane, but we're a Motel not a Hotel'. Peace All
19:50 "Heineken Hole" ! Must be it !
Unfortunate that Tom did not spot it and go "no, they are not going to trick me with this" ;-)
The only reason I knew it was Chengdu airport was the from the flight code-3U (Sichuan Airlines). I know that 3U departs to and from Chengdu, which is what made me realise it was that specific airport.
i really cant believe it and its the best geoguessr guess of my life but i got a perfect score on the first round
Those cars, and left hand drive, it seemed really obvious that it was either northern Australia or chain of islands above. I was hands in head as you got fixated on Jamaica. Oh and teh Croc in teh pool :)
The thought chain of litter -> India was so golden 😂I had the same.
I was also certain that the last one was a Caribbean Island...! Wow. And the Chinese cities I also get wrong all the time, as well. They all look alike. 😆
Thanks for another great round, keep them coming. 👍
This would be a great map to treat like a geo detective video!
Pandas in the gift shop and the signage on the windows near the stairs to Gate 27 clearly says CH………. INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. Good effort though!
round 5 stuck me as being near Australia, all the cars, the mountains looked like FNQ
Perfect timing I've just been binging some of your old geoguessr videos
favorite channel
I immediately recognised the mountain at 10:21, i grew up near there! ❤ If you squint hard enough you could possibly even see my house 😅
Happy New Year Tom
To answer your question, Jurassic Park was filmed in Hawaii. The opening helicopter shot is famously an area near Hana on Maui. Those mountains definitely looked similar to Hawaii's so I was thinking more a tropical volcanic island in the Pacific for it. Obviously not Hawaii itself because America isn't an obscure country.
I was thinking Australia for the last one, the vehicles, the awnings over the pool etc.
it helps if you can read chinese. The shop with the women says "Sichuan" in Chinese characters and that's the province where Chengdu is
Hope all is well my man🙏❤️ Holidays can be heavy
the filming locations for Jurasic Park were filmed on the island of "Kauai" in Hawaii which is far away from Jamaica, btw i love you'r geodetective serie's
For the last one you can see a satellite dish pointing north. So it must be in south hemisphere
Tom playing basic geoguessr is a classic
Hi Tom, the china one was a frustrating watch for me because if you knew how to read chinese, the very first shop you saw in the airport was called 四川特产 meaning Sichuan Specialties, Sichuan being the province and Chengdu being the capital city!
Isn't Sichuan style food just common to Chinese cuisine, though? Especially for Westerners, it's pretty famous
Moronic logic lol. There's a Sichuan House in Islington, north London. Is that in Sichuan too?
Are there often a bunch of Chinese people flying out to Shenzhen from London? Are things in London airports often written in Chinese? Sorry I’m not from there so I can’t understand *your* “moronic logic”.
If they’d guessed based on that (very sound) logic they would’ve 5k’d. Clearly it’s not moronic lol
