  • For many international students coming to Canada, a study permit is often seen as an ideal pathway to land jobs here and get permanent residency. But as Shaurya Kshatri explains, many of those who come struggle to find a job in the fields they studied in.

and it isn't worth it. People say if you do not like living here then just leave. Then I would like to tell them to try leaving their home at 18 and studying in foreign universities with student loans for 4 years and then work minimum wage jobs to cover up the student loans they took. There is no way once you come here you can leave. You will be in debt and the only way to get out of the debt is to find a field job that Canada is lacking. Canadian engineer themself are running to the US or getting a PR and working their ars off till they burn out and listen to racist people who think you are the one scamming them. So my advice to students here is to stay back and get ready to be scammed. Canada is a debt trap. Rich people come here to get poor and poor people come here to get in debt.

"Then I would like to tell them to try leaving their home at 18 and studying in foreign universities with student loans for 4 years and then work minimum wage jobs to cover up the student loans they took."
So, first of all, coming to Canada to study is a CHOICE; it is not a requirement or expectation of any person outside Canada. Secondly, when Canadian-born students graduate, do you think we just automatically find a job in our desired field? Most students work minimum wage jobs until they find one in their field because most students have STUDENT LOANS, among other bills to pay for.
"There is no way once you come here you can leave."
      Farthest thing from the truth.
"You will be in debt and the only way to get out of the debt is to find a field job that Canada is lacking."
Weird, it's almost like that's the story for EVERY student who ever graduated in Canada after using student loans to pay for their education.
"Rich people come here to get poor and poor people come here to get in debt."
"Rich" people come here to get PR. I don't think "poor" people can afford the requirements to come here.

Don’t expect good jobs here. Their economy relies heavily on real estate and mineral resources. Don’t expect innovation from them. This is what is called a poor mindset. Canada is irrelevant on world stage. Nobody talks about Canada. Imagine a country where real estate sale each year gives more returns than owning a innovative startup or business. Why would anybody innovate or start a business if real estate is giving 20 to 25% returns each year?
Canadian economy is artificially propped up due to high real estate prices. Take out Canadian real estate from Canadian economy and see the real numbers. Real estate constitutes over 1/5 of Canadian economy.

There are no jobs available because a lot of small businesses and companies are leaving Canada not coming here due to ridiculous taxation and high cost of living.

What does attending a college or university in Canada have to do with them working and remaining in Canada.
Pay your tuition, attend your course, pass and go back to your country to work.
If the aim is to stay in Canada, then follow the proper immigration process, just like my family did.
My father secured a job, apartment and car, waited years for the process, paid for our travel here, and once here, my parents worked, never relying on any government assistance, EI or food bank.
And we learned English as everyone should and as an immigration requirement.
For third world countries, opressed citizens, no human rights, violence against women and children, they sure know how to swindle and pilfer other countries.
While you're in school, please attend your classes and don't expect to cheat off of Canadian students.

Did she even apply for a decent grad program. Anything offered by Memorial University in St. John's, is hardly worth attending at the graduate level and any research on her part would have pointed that out. Really, how can a no-name, small school like it offer any respected high-end graduate technical program. Why do you think any decent Canadian graduate is told to try to get into a top US grad school. The very fact she went there says something about her lack of ability. Graduate school is aimed at training researchers not to "try again" because you couldn't get a job with your first PhD. In industry, a PhD can actually be detrimental to finding engineering / SW employment, and if you list another program after your PhD, your CV will immediately go into the round file. A bachelor, specialized Masters is much better than a bachelor, PhD, specialized Masters. The former says you weren't organized, passionate enough, or judge not to have what it takes to do PhD level work and get on the tenor track.

      @@TheTruth-cg8vj
Yes, she applied for a Master's in Artificial Intelligence, I admit that we were influenced by the narrative that Canada is a country in need of professionals, and ultimately what matters most is the so-called Canadian experience. Unfortunately, to apply for permanent residency, you enter the Express Entry system, where, due to age, you start losing points, and now we are at the age of 34. We saw as an option to enter through federal residency programs, in this case, through the province of Newfoundland, where age is not as determined, and if you manage to have an acceptable score. Additionally, as international students, the costs at Memorial University fit our budget. We both have backgrounds in electrical engineering. My wife worked in the industry in a radar development company with her Ph.D. as a researcher. We made the decision to move from Brazil to Ecuador due to currency devaluations (a decision that turned out to be wrong but served as a learning experience).
In a way, I contradict you a bit because it depends on the job or industry. I also have a Ph.D. in engineering and work in a software company as a blockchain developer. So, it's not about a lack of ability but rather the desire to migrate legally, and for my wife, to venture into a high-demand field like artificial intelligence offered by Memorial. Now, regarding an academic career, it's quite saturated, and Canada is bureaucratic with the recognition of foreign programs, even though the university where I earned my Ph.D. is ranked acceptably within the top 200 universities worldwide. That's why I can assure you of the poor quality of the program.

It's a "Tilak" a coloured spot on forehead people wear as part of our South Asian culture. Kind of like face tattoos from some cultures. In Hinduism people wear a Bindi on forehead for of course to look good, religious reasons, and sometimes as part of what was passed down within family. Women in and around my hometown, tattoo a dot on their forehead and wear another bindi on it. Whatever point is, its part if culture lol.

The main cause of this problem is the education system in Canada - it exploits International students by charging then 4 - 5 times the fees it charges for the local students and sets high expectations about the job prospects in Canada. It shows a very glossy image of Canada to international students and recruits them for courses which are not valued at all by Canadian industries. In Canada the only thing that really works is connections - I have seen so many incompetent people at really good jobs just because they have good connections. It is a shame really especially for those students who are bright and could do much better in some other country - they are wasted here in an environment where politics and connections are prioritized over skills and competence.
And speaking for local Canadian people - they have lived mostly in an environment of very low competition so, there is no drive to improve or study. It breeds an environment where low calibre people thrive. Overall, not really a country for the bright and ambitious international students. Dont waste your life here. Better go to the US.

Maybe so, but Canada is a sovereign country and has every right to charge outsiders however much it wants. Also, many of those outsiders don't care about studying as much they care about getting Permanent Residency.

@banksy2870 absolutely spot on....Canada has gone down the drain now..people used to get jobs based on skills and competency and now it is based on connections....so many worst performers get jobs in Toronto due to this exact nepotism....Not to mention how all these international students are coming here and paying high tuition and cant build a career and work in low wage jobs that an average Canadian would do while they start their career...tbh Canadian dream is broken and continued to be broken because of stupid government policies

bringing foreign nationals as students to Canada has become a huge and growing industry. what's being sold is not education but essentially an entry point and a pathway to immigration. The numbers have grown exponentially, and the issue has become so visible to the general public that our very own federal government, which incidentally has been promoting the idea of the more the merrier for years, has taken steps to reduce the intake. for the past few days CBC has been running stories with "stakeholders", i.e. those who profit from the inflow, about the "hit" to our reputation globally, which, of course, is just self-serving nonsense. why couldn't CBC profile a recent graduate struggling to find employment who is Canadian? why is this relentless focus on foreign nationals from our national broadcaster? this rot is coming from the very top. change cannot come fast enough.

Adopting to local standards help find a job. Having a big red paint on your forehead does not help get a job. Having a more typical professionally looking hair cut can help as well instead of one side shaven. Adjusting to fit in to local custom and standards can always increase chance of finding a job.

Hello, international students! Your decision to pursue education here carries significant expectations, especially when considering the potential impact on your home countries. We anticipate that you will leverage the knowledge and skills acquired during your studies in Canada! to contribute positively to the growth and development of your own nations.
However, it's crucial to acknowledge the challenge of accommodating a large influx of students, leading to a scarcity of job opportunities. Our intention is not to confine you to low-paying jobs and subpar living conditions. Rather, we aspire to foster an environment where you can thrive professionally and personally, aligning your efforts with meaningful contributions to both your host and home countries.
Canada needs a lot of people to do various jobs, especially those that don't pay a lot. They've come up with a smart plan: they're bringing in millions of individuals for these jobs, but at the same time, these people have to pay for their own trip. The jobs they're getting might be seen as basic or not highly paid, but it's all part of Canada's careful plan to manage their workforce and meet the country's economic needs.
