  • Tekken TAG Tournament Arcade 1999 vs 2000 PS2 version.
Take a close look at the Tekken Tag Arcade version (1999) running on a Namco System 12 Arcade board, the same system as Tekken 3 ran on. The System 12 is slightly more powerful than the Playstation even though the Hardware is the same.
Tekken Tag on the arcade could have made it to the PS one with plat background droppings like Tekken 3 and heavy compression. But as we are more familiar with the game was released for the Playstation 2 with x4 better polygon count and visuals.
Let's compare Tekken tag arcade vs Tekken tag on Playstation 2! Are there any details on the Arcade version that was better than the PS2 version of the game? This is basically a PS1 vs PS2 where 32 bit meets 128 bit.

Some character’s faces look a little off (Law, Michelle, Jin for example), and the colors on certain alts like Jin’s red flames and Heihachi’s gold pants actually don’t look as good on PS2 as they do in the arcade. Plus, it’s super interesting to see Tekken 2 characters in the Tekken 3 style.

Even the Arcade models dont look bad, they have pretty highly detailed models despite running on what is a slightly better PS1. Note the individual fingers on each hand. Most 3D PS1 games dont have that, Rival Schools in particular. But the PS2 models look amazing, and this was a launch title. It can afford to have high quality models since it doesnt have to render a whole lot at a time but there isnt that many other PS2 games that look this good

I play the arcade version and the PS3 remaster back to back very often and I agree that the arcade version feels faster and smoother to control. My first instinct was that it might be due to increased input latency on the console versions, and I think that could be a part of it, but also the character animations and movements are just more sluggish. I find the arcade version much more enjoyable to play.
