Worked in Rancho Cordova off of Sunrise Boulevard, and we would put our chairs in the parking lot and watch and hear the B52’s as they took off and flew right overhead!! Good times gone forever.

It's poorly worded, one of the options they looked at was replacing the twin engine pods with 4 larger engines but they found if one of the engines failed on takeoff it generated too much asymmetric thrust. At the 3:00 mark they talk about the dual engine pod configuration.
I went on vacation one year and we noticed that our plane ✈️ was considerably more powerful when taking off than normal. When we landed and disembark we looked back at the plane and saw that the engines had a rolls-Royce logo on it. 😂

That may help explain why the B-52 platform still flies today. When you don’t have the precision tools and computation methods that allow precise simulation of real-world operating conditions you throw in large “safety factors”. I read that the DC-3 airliner, and its C-47 military version. never suffered a wing structural failure. Donald Douglas hired the best structural engineer in the business to design that wing. John Northrop. Boeing sure has fallen a long way since the glory years of the B-52 and the 700-series of airliners.

These RR engines are so much quieter and a VERY different sound - I'll have to get trained up to recognise the NEW sound of these scrambling! You will be hard pressed to find any jet powered aircraft in service today that hasn't a digital engine controls or in short FADEC. Yes, it's EMP hardend. Honestly, EMP effects aren't really as severe as depicted in popular media. Especially when it comes to things that work off grid anyway. The actual effects aren't much different than if something electrical or with electronics inside is hit by lightning.
Its a missile truck these days it has a whole range of standoff weapons available and does not need to get anywhere near the enemy air defence bubble to do its job.
At some point the USAF will figure out the best replacement for the B52 is a modern built version of the B52. How many B52 replacements have come and gone? How many generations of pilots have flown the B52?

@Trashcanpekos I was a Weather Obsever(25251) pcs to Utapao AFB '70 to '71. Off duty, I'd go down to the beach and would watch and hear those buffs go over head at, I assume, was full military power. I don't know which engines may have been in those birds, but they were wonderfully noisy as hell.
Because there wasn't one that would fit. The issue was on one hand on the structural side and on the other how much control authority there is. First of all, the structure can't handle significantly more thrust than they already have with the old smokers. secondly, when they started this upgrade programm, first they wanted to go with 4 more powerful engines instead of 8. The issue is though, with 4 engines if one of the outer engine would fail during take off, they may struggle to keep the aircraft in the air because they may be unable to counter the asymetric thrust situation with the amount of rudder authority the B52 has.
Can the Boeing of today do a successful upgrade program on a plane designed by a completely different group of people 72 years ago? I'm skeptical. If computers are involved, I'm doubly skeptical.

There is still a treaty in place with Russia that mandates how many B-52s the U.S. can have in service. Way back when, The U.S. had to destroy a number of B-52s with a huge guillotine at Davis Monthan AFB Boneyard where the Air Force keeps a great quantity of plane to be used for spare parts.
They spend on 600 new engines for an aircraft that entered service in 1952. Pointless. And they send the much more capable, powerful, faster, etc B1 Lance to the scrap heap. Incomprehensible, unless in those 600 engines and other upgrades there are huge "gains" for both sides, the generals and Rolls-Royce and many others companies.
The B-1 is a pile of junk. FMC rate of 10% , meaning out of 10 B-1's, only 1 of them is fully mission capable. The B-52 can carry far more payload then the B-1. You don't know anything.
A complete waste of money, even the North Vietnamese were blowing these things out of the sky with 1960's missile technology against somebody with a modern developed air defense system the B-52 doesn't stand a chance

I was a jet engine mechanic on the B52G at Mather AFB in California 52 years ago. This is no doubt the best miltary plane ever made.

I helped change engines on the dog model B52 (1974-1976) from J57 to TF33. BUFFs were the best😁. Also KC,EC, RC 135s to TF33 (1976-80).
I remember back in the 80's when 4 x R-R RB211-535 engines were considered as a replacement. Well done R-R, you finally made it!
