      Imagine - the B52 was designed and built by engineers with Friden calculators and slide rules. Boeing probably used big mainframe computers for some of the heavy analysis but before PCs; before pocket calculators, before laser measurement devices. Before transistor radios.
      That may help explain why the B-52 platform still flies today. When you don’t have the precision tools and computation methods that allow precise simulation of real-world operating conditions you throw in large “safety factors”. I read that the DC-3 airliner, and its C-47 military version. never suffered a wing structural failure. Donald Douglas hired the best structural engineer in the business to design that wing. John Northrop.
      Boeing sure has fallen a long way since the glory years of the B-52 and the 700-series of airliners.

    • @shi01
      @shi01 Месяц назад +2

      Because there wasn't one that would fit. The issue was on one hand on the structural side and on the other how much control authority there is. First of all, the structure can't handle significantly more thrust than they already have with the old smokers. secondly, when they started this upgrade programm, first they wanted to go with 4 more powerful engines instead of 8. The issue is though, with 4 engines if one of the outer engine would fail during take off, they may struggle to keep the aircraft in the air because they may be unable to counter the asymetric thrust situation with the amount of rudder authority the B52 has.

    RR engines !??? Really 🤨 That maker has PROVEN to be a Shite Maker Look into the A380 and the Garbage Engines that RR actually delivered... that in real life achieved NONE of their perf claims. Suspect some serious bribery in THIS decision

    They should have changed to American Made GE Engines.!! GE engines are more powerful at a lower operating and initial cost .!! All Rolls Royce engines are just overpriced, high maintenance CRAP.!! 🤔😱😡👍🏽

      well apparently not because the USAF did a very long and thorough analysis. But its always fun to see a Butt Hurt Yank waving the Stars & Stripes, shouting 'MURICAAA' while gobbing off about shit they know nothing about.
      But maybe we Brits should tell Lockheed Martin to bin their crappy P & W engines in the F-35s we are buying and fit the better Rolls Royce engines they should have bought in the first place.
