Has Virginia even been top 10 after 1990? That whole season felt like a fever dream as a kid used to Miami, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Florida State, and Colorado. VIRGINIA!?!? GEORGIA TECH!?!? TEXAS!?!? BYU!?!? It was a joyride because it felt like other teams had a shot. Something that exists even LESS in the modern monopoly.
Yes, O'Leary was there. He was the defensive coordinator, and he remained defensive coordinator under Bill Lewis, until being named head coach in 1994.
Still the biggest win of all time in all Ga Tech Sports,#2 is the basketball teams 2004 FF win over OK State and #3 is the MBB win over Minnesota in 1990 to get to Denver and the FF! Still sooo much fun to watch after all those years!
@joboots007 Yep. Derek wore #83. He injured his hamstring before the Sugar Bowl, otherwise he'd have played in his final college game against Tennessee! It's been long enough that I remember clearly watching this game on TV, but I have no clue which team I was rooting for.
They did lose that game. But that had nothing to do with this season. Tech would beat anyone in 1990. 91 William Bell got in trouble and had to sit out for season. That was a big blow. They also lost some other key players that were seniors.
Current Tennessee coach Derek Dooley was a starting wideout alongside Herman Moore that day.............daddy Vince was in the stands since UGA was off that week,BTW!!!!
I'm a Texas football guy, but this was one of the greatest games I have EVER seen. I still remember it vividly two decades later.
I was living in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia when this game was played. Never will forget it.
Great team with a great Head Coach in Bobby Ross at Georgia Tech in 1990
One of the best college football games ever! I see the entire game on Ytube and it is definitely worth a watch.

This was a pretty good game, I remember watching this at a party in Golden Gate Park . I can't believe it is almost 20 years since this game happened.
Try 30!
Being ranked #1 was a death sentence in 1990!
Ahh the good old days...back when Tech was good...back before I was born...

I can't believe I remember watching this game as if were yesterday! At the time, I was sure Tech would lose this game, but I was wrong. Oh, well...
Yep. Shame, too. We had a powerhouse brewing under Bobby Ross.
George O'Leary at 2 minutes 35 seconds
i think tech was crushed by joe pa and the lions in the 1991 season opener ...kick off classic...give tech and shawn jones credit though.....
