  • Nhl playoffs 2024 - Toronto maple leafs vs boston bruins heads to beantown for game 5 , but the auston matthews mitch marner william nylander bench moment and the way this series has gone thanks to brad marchand jeremy swayman and the lack of the leafs core 4 , things are hot in toronto. Leafs bruins nhl highlights today tavares marner being talked about most, but as many pundits like elliotte friedman and even steve dangle have mentioned, big things are looming after this playoff series unless the toronto maple leafs game 7 magical comeback becomes a reality. I look at how Jack Eichel has blossomed in Vegas. The once locker room cancer is now a beloved stud. Why? Because he's not expected to be the answer for everything. He's just expected to go out and play. I wonder if that's what is going on with Marner. You've got to imagine he's gripping his stick and and all that does is make things worse. Put him on a team where he's a solid second line player and take the spotlight off of him, it would be interesting to see how he performs.

I've been saying it for so long to just about every Leafs fan in my life...Marner is not worth the money they've paid him all these years, and never has been, big picture speaking. Tavares is overpaid and theres a reason Matthews signed 4 years, not 8. Hes not McDavid, and cant do it on his own. He's got his bag regardless, and would probably bounce after this contract if the team isnt in a good spot. Nylander couldn't care less, got the biggest contract in Leafs history on a non existent post season track record. I wont be surprised if Marner gets another extension knowing this management. The management cares about selling jerseys, merch and stadium food cause leafs fans will buy it up regardless of how the team performs. Winning isnt priority one, the money is.

I don't doubt Tavares' leadership abilities, it's just that he's the quiet, lead by example type of leader, which is not what the Leafs need. The core group doesn't seem to have the "hate to lose" mentality, and the captain of the Leafs cannot give in to that attitude and allow it to permeate to the rest of the team. If the coach can't hold guys accountable, the captain has to be able to pull guys aside and demand it from them.

He's in the latter half of his career now, it's inevitable, time inevitably takes its toll on any hockey player. But if he accepts a lower rate, or even is willing to take an additional discount to help bolster the rest of the team, then I think he still provides value on a 2nd or 3rd line.

If he takes a hometown discount and isn't looking to cash in, he'd be a good depth centre who can play the PP, useful for faceoff plays, good leadership, etc. Marner I would be looking for a defenseman back, possibly a sign and trade deal if that will net more of a return. If you can't get an elite defenseman for him, you need to get a solid 2nd pairing D and a first round pick that can be flipped for another D or used to draft a D. Goaltending I'd go with Woll and someone near Samsonov's cap hit from free agency in a 1A-1B setup. Bring back Domi and Bertuzzi if they will take reasonable cap hit deals, otherwise move on.

Marner has been Leafs best player the past couple season, he's taken a backseat to Matthews and Nylander this season but maybe that's all the excuses they need.
Leafs fans been saying it year AFTER year... They need a starting goalie that can be consistent and reliable and make they odd game saving save that rallies their team behind him. They need better defense, a leader on defense and muscle. Allocating more money to the core four that can't show any muscle or emotion is not the right path, and hasn't been for years...

I'd do everything possible to get Marner moved along. Get some assets and free up that cap space. Maybe he can shine somewhere, but it's not with the Leafs in the playoffs. So move him. I don't know if Tavares is likely to go anywhere. But do it if possible. Just make all the reasonable efforts to build a better balanced roster up front and on the blueline. And see what options are there for the coaching staff. All of them should go for the coaching staff. Keefe and the assistants. They need a fresh start for next season.

Let brodie and sammy go, attempt a JT trade with some retention, as he still holds value as you said. This would free up around 10 million or so. Go forward and look for a good goalie. Start to rebuild this D aswell. Blow up the coaching staff. Give the youngins a chance (Cowan Webber Hildeby) Keep Woll as I feel at his peak he can be a very very solid goalie. Samsonov is a backup, not starter and there is little chance he's going to win a game or two for you. Vs Boston - game 3 - the D was atrocious - too much standing around watching.
