    Worst part for Shilese is this is the second time she has missed the Olympics because of injury.

    Honestly, oksana is goals. I really wish I was able to do gymnastics for as long as she does. And idk what her body is made off, but it’s crazy she didn’t burn out. The sport evolved a lot and she might not be a medal contender anymore, but she still does gymnastics at such a high level. She really is an inspiration

      I agree totally. I'm 3 years younger than her and can only dream of still being able to do gymnastics. It truly blows my mind to see how old so many of these Olympic athletes are and are still competing. It used to be by the time you hit your 20s you were considered past your prime. It's just insane with how much women's gymnastics has adjusted focus from the grace and flexibility to the power and strength that these women are showing that even pushing 50 they are still able to do this sport.

    It is wild that Oksana can still do what she does at 49. Most gymnasts retire when they're in their mid-late 20s, but year after year she surprises the world by continuing to return. And not only is she continuing to compete at the elite level, but she's been able to adapt to all the changes that's happened in the sport. Heck, the vault was a completely different apparatus, the Uneven bars were closer together, and the scoring system has changed so many times. I've heard people say "Well of course she can still get in to the olympics, she completes for a country that doesn't have much gymnastics competition" but still, any country can't just sign up their athlete for whatever Olympic sport they want, the athlete still has to compete in competitions to earn a spot in the Olympics. Anytime she announces her retirement, I'm just like "Ok, see you again in a few years!" Heck, most of the gymnasts competing today weren't even born when her senior elite gymnastics career started. It honestly felt wierd not seeing her at the Olympics this time around. Anyways, I'm expecting her to come back for the next one!
    Gymnasts like Simone Biles may be a legend for her difficulty and medals, but Oksana is a legend for her longevity and continued presence in the sport.

    Shilese was like 1-2 points behind Biles in the all around. That’s how exceptional she was. It was so devastating to see her withdraw from the competition.

    I know we shouldn’t let people onto Olympic teams on the basis of seniority, but I almost think they should do something special for Oksana. Maybe the governing body for gymnastics could make a point of bestowing a lifetime achievement award honoring a gymnast who has made a major contribution to the sport, the way the Emmys have a lifetime achievement award which is used to honor contributions made over the course of the whole of a career, rather than a single contribution.
    Oksana could have this award bestowed upon her at the Olympics with the whole world watching and get recognition for the sheer breadth and depth of her career. And if she wants, maybe she could be allowed to demonstrate her skill by performing on an apparatus of her choice.
    I’m sure people in the comments will point out the flaws of my idea, but I was just speculating really.

    • @JennaLeigh
      @JennaLeigh 5 месяцев назад +5

      I think that's a great idea- I was thinking there could maybe be an Oksana Chusovitina award created. The Olympics are unlikely to alter their awards process but maybe at World's there could be an award named for her- perhaps given to a young lady who showed grit, strength, and determination throughout a long career.
      First recipient could be Vanessa Ferrari.

    To see Georgia Godwin’s beautiful dimples appear because of a sad grimace is just heartbreaking for me. All these hardcore competitors sidelined right before the Games will never stop being a gut punch. 😫
    And THANK YOU for pointing out Oksana’s accomplishments. I am American and even I realize that our country’s money & power with respect to media has influenced our “no one can touch Simone with GOAT status in WAG” narrative. Im sure >95% of Americans would be clueless to who Oksana is, but then get highly offended if you offer her as a GOAT candidate. (I *hate* the GOAT debate of anything anyway, but this one is especially aggravating.) Oksana’s accomplishments stand on their own merits in any debate. But her willingness to do almost anything to help her critically ill child is flat-out inspiring.

    As someone who has shattered her left foot & 2 vertebrae plus torn ligaments & tendons in my knee, I have no idea how anyone comes back from injuries like that and can still compete at an Olympic level. These women are truly amazing. It must be devastating when your body, which you're used to being able to do the sport you love, fails. These women give up everything to compete at this level, It's always so sad when they miss the chance to perform in a final Olympics.

    I’m so glad that this sport has been skewing older in recent years, because I stopped watching during the “little girl” years when a gymnast was done at 18. I’m also super glad to see so many different, healthy female bodies out there, instead of the starved-looking skeletons who used to “grace” the sport. I’ve been waiting for a change in ballet, but have stopped watching that, too, because the skeletal women make me sick.

    The four breaks in her foot shows she's low in vitamin d. Breaks can happen in Black people who are not outside all the time in warm weather getting vitamin d from the sun. Small amounts of sun are not enough to produce sufficient vitamin d in dark skinned people (and most others too). The good news is that she can start now to remedy that with supplements, and the foot can be perfectly strong again.
