John Coltrane was at this time on a spiritual journey.

Really enjoyed this. Many thanks. We recorded a podcast about this album last year (after deep diving) and I think you really offered lots of info here that will help people understand it and Coltrane better. Well done.

Garrisons solo is what drags this album down for me, same as most of Coltranes albums where he is allowed to do that, he was the weak point of this quartet. Very basic, repetetive and disengaging at times. I love long bass solos but in the era of great bassists, he just wasnt interesting enough. He developed a little bit, which can be noticed on later Japanese concerts but still he is mostly a rythym player to me.

Not sure I would say he drags it down per se, seems a strong statement but I do know what you mean.
Imagine Cecil McBee or Richard Davis on that date!

Absolutely, this album is horrible boring. People just say they love it just be part of the group. I don’t believe any of them.
