Frank, the horse that can only speaks English is a critic. His imagination, as a young person was filled with Hollywood westerns instead of finding heros in our own culture.

In my interpretation, it's a song describing two kids playing, full of references to imagination and toys.
I agree with you on the take that The horse only speaking english is a critique, but i've only ever imagine it as A kid's imagination "i'm a hero and a cowboy and a i have a horse, and it speaks english, and...."
Either way, of of my fav songs ever.

Frank, I understand this music as a dialogue of Chico and the personification of his childhood. The first third tells about how was his childhood, with all the surreal things he says. The second third tells about Chico growing up, and the childhood going away, with Chico going to despair, and the final third is about how lost and dark is the adulthood without all the childhood's magic (sorry if I've made any english mistake)

Meu Deus...

Chico is one of the most important names - perhaps the most important one who is still alive - of Brazilian Music. He has a long carreer and hundreds of outstading lyrics with songs composed by himself or partners like Tom Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes, Edu Lobo, Francis Hime, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Toquinho, Dominguinhos, João Bosco and many others. Even though he has some lovely songs composed by himself, most times he is known by his lyrics. As a big fan of him I always say that he has kind of literature-like of writing his songs. By the way, he is a lovely writer to! His novels, specially Budapest and Spilt Milk, which are also published in English, are the best one, in my point of view.
"João e Maria" was actually composed by Sivuca, a wonderful Brazilian arccodionist. Try to hear some instrumental version of this song played by an accordin. This one in the following link, played by Dominguinhos and Yamandu, is amazing: ruclips.net/video/z5fTtKe-Nbc/видео.html.
Talking about the lyrics, I like to see it as a man who is in a profound state of sadness because the loved woman walked away. As an attempt to feel a little better, a marvelous fairy-tale world is constructed in which he is a heroe and also a king and a judge, instead of an abandoned fool. Besides, in his beautiful world, everyone was commited to be happy by the force of the law and his loved one was a crowned princess, such a gorgeos girl who walked naked throughout the country. After constructing this magic world, he remembers the truth behind that beauty and begs to the loved one not going away, but it's already too late. She's already gone and he was left asking himfelf what life would do to him... Such an awesome beautiful sad song!

I am really happy you found a pretty accurate translation for this song. It is all about the imagery, as you mentioned. A boy and his dreams, creating his characters and having his loves. He grows up, however, to see a world that has way more evil than he was aware about, and now his loves are gone and "what will life do to me?".
As with many of his songs, you can also understand it as a veiled critic to the military regime, which shattered the world and expectations of many, the same way as growing up does to our childish selves. Great lyrics, great melodies, great arrangement. More Chico, please!

He bravely fought against our dictatorial period of more than 20 years, producing songs against the Government, as like CÁLICE or APESAR DE VOCÊ. They're such strong songs! The lyrics are about nostalgia, about a past of early adulthood, when you have barely left childhood. It seems the author had a sheltered and affluent childhood, enjoying cowboy movies on matinees (thus, that is why his horse "only spoke english"). With his words, the author describes a past universe of benign phantasy, suggesting that he is going through bitter times. Many of the Chico Buarque songs, like this one, reflectio of the dark times of brazilian politics in the 1970s.
You have reviewd two of the most popular songs of the artist, and if you want to go deeper try "Apesar de Você", and "Roda Viva" and the upbeat contrast of "Vai passar".

This song is gorgeous. It was composed by Sivuca, a great brazilian musician, as a lullaby, a little waltz. Chico made the lyrics more then 30 years after that and try to capture this lullaby's spirit. "João e Maria" are the names in portuguese version for "Hansel and Gretel".

Hey! Now you are discovering Chico Buarque. There are some treasures that you must know, like “Meu Caro Amigo”. I already wrote about, it’s a letter for an exilated friend out of Brasil. The music style is called “choro” or “chorinho” (you could translate literally as “cry” or “tiny cry”). It has this name because the songs are usually tearful, although it is characterized by a restless and euphoric musicality, marked by the exceptional skill of the instrumentalists. I can recommend many others, but want that you check this. Or, even before, check the original “construção”. Thank you.

Sivuca composed it right after the end of WWII. Years later Chico Buarque wrote Lyrics to it. And IT IS about two children in a time of war - a boy and a girl. The little boy sings it. You can hear it right at the start "Now I was a hero" (Now I was).

Two kids playing... in Portuguese the way he speaks reminds the way children speaks to each other to say rules of the game. All the things he tells about brings to the moment a childhood vision of life full of stories from cinema and old tale books.
