  • San Francisco is banning facial recognition technology. Once signed into law, it will be the first American city to make it illegal for local government agencies to obtain, retain, access or use the surveillance. However, the ban will not apply to private companies.

San Francisco did the right thing. I like Europe, but facial recognition is very unhealthy.
Especially for Germany, which has the right mindset for a police state.

@@Zombiepull just a few things that striked me while being in Deutschland.
Mainly the very collective and security oriented mentality, even at workplace, germans I met would sacrifice the individual for the collective in a hearthbeat, and choose security above freedom.
Also, the level of censorship is crazy for a western country.
That's coming from a latin (mostly french) perspective.

I'm not a fan of San Francisco, or California for that matter, but, FRT is much too Orwellian for me. It totally creeps me out to walk into a retail store or public building and see cameras everywhere.

Facial recognition is something I despise. Too much invasion of privacy.

I'm glad for this. I don't want the government tracking my every move, every place I go. This is America, not China. This really needs to apply to private companies as well unless you actively opt-in.

If this were to pass there will be a high arrest number of resisting without violence due to people protesting when the software is wrong. Those without lawyer money will have that charge stick and force to plea out. Thus putting a conviction on someone who was never guilty of anything in the first place.

Please answer what and how they are using it. If I don't know, it's the same as not having a choice. My privacy is MINE you don't have my permission to surveil me in any way . I'm not a criminal. They will abuse the use of it- it's a given. Strict strict laws protecting privacy are needed to be kept or made stronger so that no abuse can occur, these are people's lives. Please don't even try to use the flimsy argument of its for security i.e. Terrorism we know what a farce that was,

Tampa Bay Ybor city was the first to have facial recognition in the world. Then Raymond James Stadium where the Buccaneers play and then they start putting them everywhere. But it was first tested in Tampa
