+Pro Gamer7474 I would guess that it's a psychological/social thing. With any of this, it's important that you set up controlled opportunities to practice this in situations that aren't full-out but simulate what the experience will be. Try doing it at home, then in a different place that's not as comfy but is still safe. Then try focusing on resonating fully just when you go into a single store and say "Thanks" as you're about to leave. Then extend it slowly into longer and more intimidating situations. FORCE yourself to do it at least once a day. Make a deal with yourself: I don't get to (insert favorite game or food or app) until I go into a public situation and speak on my full voice. It takes a month or so to build a habit...
I did the plank, used my diaphragm to speak loud, and said "When in disgrace with fortune and men's eyes" a few times. My mom came into the livingroom and told me to go out and play like normal kids......
This has worked wonders in helping me get my neighbours dog to shut up. They won't tell it off but now I can shout without sounding like a whistling kettle it's much better! On a more serious note I'm often told I speak too quiet, and if I try to talk louder I get higher, this has helped with both.
Finally, a voice coach who _isn't_ full of pseudotechnical babble and basic misconceptions about human anatomy. There's so much bullshit out there, and it's so rare to find someone who isn't a fraud.
You do have to be careful to "let" the voice go lower and not "make" it go lower - and then it takes time for your body to get used to the new mode of working. Think of moving in that direction a little at a time. I'll plan a video for the future that may help you to get a better sense of your range, but a lot of people neglect this low end and default to a "nice person" voice in a higher pitch range - it's common for someone's "phone voice." I grew the beard for you.
BellicaTV No. You have to constantly walk around with your knees bent. --actually, the point is to find the benefit you gain from the knee bend (or other form or effort that engages your abs) and bring that into your speech without crouching. I do this with students all of the time. I like to call this kind of thing a "cheat" that you then have to learn to do without cheating.
+Isku Roon Most of the time when people run out of breath, it's because they're speaking nasally, so a lot of air is escaping through the nose and is not being used for speech. (They often are very fast speakers, too, in an attempt to get through the thought on the limited breath.) I've got a couple of additional posts on nasality online...

Well, I offer some insights in these videos. I also do coaching through my AccentHelp website, and I have a voice book on there as well. Sorry you're running into that issue!
Hey love the beard jim! I have a question about my pitch. I notice how your pitch is very deep and i wish i could be that low, but after talking low it seems as though its not natural. I hear voices like Penn badgley, Bendict Cumberbatch, and Ethan peck and wish could have that but i'm not sure i can. How can i find my natural pitch if its higher or lower?
Jim thanks for sharing, do you have advice of how to have a loud voice while teaching a group fitness class? My whole body is in motion and it's hard to keep the chest open. Thank you!
The hard part is that you have to find the experience of this louder voice in a controlled situation, where you're "tricking" yourself to do it. Then you have to move into a more normal situation, but keep your focus on your voice, and then transition into a more challenging situation, like the fitness class you're talking about. It has to remain a very conscious thing for a while before it can become unconscious... Sorry that it's not easier than that... Keeping focused on your core engaging throughout and keeping open across your chest may be the key.
Hello, I am a teacher who has been trying to do this. May I know when you said "engaging the abs during the outbreath" when speaking, is your belly going in or out? Many thanks
The belly is going in. Now you might notice the upper part of the belly popping slightly outward while the lower part is engaging and moving inward, but if the belly as a whole is going outward, it's a sign you're NOT getting your breath flowing outward like it needs to be.
Hi, I hope you're keeping well man. I have noticed that when I lightly engage my core by lightly flexing my abdominals, my voice is deeper, stronger and powerful. Am I doing diaphragmatic breathing correctly? It certainly made a noticeable difference in my speaking voice.
Bingo! That said, I wouldn't give too much credit to diaphragmatic breathing - that's mostly about bringing the air in, while the abs (and other things) are the primary muscles responsible for the out-breath, which is the main thing to make sure is working well for this.
@@AccentHelp Thank you. That clears up a lot of things. Would you suggest that I continually keep my core engaged (by slightly drawing the stomach in) when speaking? Do I need to inhale by letting my stomach out at times during speech or conversations? Many thanks.
@@yasinpatel514 Sometimes people do need to make sure their stomach releases, but I often find that happens automatically, if they're engaging their abs during speech. That's where I'd suggest you put your focus, unless it causes issues. That's about the best I can do without directly observing and coaching someone...
You need twang! That'll make all the difference. I go into it a bit in this video: ruclips.net/video/l9EjZuuK0As/видео.htmlsi=41Ua6NGEhxZaP4fW But I'll also plan to make another video in the near future that goes more into Twang.
Abs need to engage for the outbreath to support the airflow for sound. It's a fallacy that the abs need to release fully for an inbreath. Odds are good that - to put it very simply - the abs are/should be always engaged during speech, whether it's inbreath or outbreath, and the diaphragm likely is too. The big focus: The abs win the battle during the outbreath/speech, and the diaphragm wins during the inbreath.
No worries - it's really about doing something that is effortful, so it can be a mild squat, or pressing on a wall, or lifting something - lots of different possibilities.
+TheCooŁXLee When you bend your knees, I;ll bet you breathe deeper, which will cause this. In addition, lower pitches require more airflow, so increasing your airflow (breath support) will likely drop your pitch, or at least the tone of your voice.
Hi Jim, I have a lot of trouble speaking up and sounding credible and mature over the phone. Any ideas for breath support exercises to do while seated at a computer? I use a headset so I can sit up straight. Thanks!
Almost any physical work that engages your body will help! Try pressing your hands down on the desk, or onto the chair at your sides, or on your thighs. Try pressing your back into the chair behind you, as if you're going to lift your butt off the seat. Try to barely lift your feet off of the floor. There are lots of options, but they all involve Work - which is why it takes practice to remind yourself to be engaged like that. Initially, you're probably going to work too hard, but eventually you should be able to ease off and almost "hint" at the Work, and that may be enough.
I'm wondering if you're losing a specific resonance tone... You can be louder with more twang, but it may mean you have less of the deeper resonance. Twang is essential for actors to be heard in a large space, but chest resonance is a good balance for that. Both are the essential elements for a performer's voice, in general.
You're still coming up on when your voice will make a significant shift, so don't worry about it at all now! You'll have plenty to worry about when you're really old, like me, so enjoy being 9 and having whatever voice you have! It's really hard to know what kind of a voice you'll eventually have - there's really no indication at your age how it will change with puberty...
Don't try to "be loud" though! You'll be more likely to close your throat when you're trying to be loud, which will actually make you less loud... and cause your voice to get tired... You'll need to practice this on your own outside of rehearsal, and keeping your throat open is a huge key! Good luck, Jaden!
If someone has a constricted voice - a constricted/closed throat - they need to open it, and that typically results in a more open low end of the voice, a deeper voice.
I'm 13 and i've known how to breath deep since i was born(its a family thing) but i speak very nasally and high pitched. Will time fix this or do i have to practise something.

I get you, because I have a naturally high pitched voice and makes me sound like a girl. Sometimes its for gifted people like you and me. I can sing cause of my voice and hit notes that some people cant reach. :D S do you see what im saying?
+ULTRA GAMER Something along this line is definitely where I'd start working with you, but it's hard to know for certain without getting to hear you and try some exercises... Usually higher pitched voices are associated with thinner and/or shorter vocal folds. Sometimes people are holding a lot of extra throat tension that causes this, which may be the case, since you commented that your throat hurts. I'm also wondering if your voice is nasal - or just twangy. (You can check out another of my videos to understand the difference.)
