The penguin you just saw was the mascot of the Austrian band "Erste Allgemeine Verunsicherung" (First General Uncertainty) or EAV for short. The band was popular during the 80ies and had funny lyrics or at least lyrics that one shouldn't take that serious and were meant to get you in a good mood. The 80ies was a weird time anyways in terms of music. The lyrics were mainly in German (hence New German Wave) and I don't think they all sounded pretty much the same. Music wise it was a very diverse time with influences from all over the world and electronic music had a big influence. Edelweis is a flower only growing on mountains in very specific conditions and therefor very rare and it is commonly known as the symbol of the alps.
"Erste Allgemeine Verunischerung" is also a play on words in German. "Versicherung" is an insurance, so "Verunsicherung" is kind of uninsurance. The EAV was an existing insurance company in Austria in 1980s.
Sidenote: "Bring me Edelweiss" (cover of Abba's "S.O.S" hook) re-ignited the Abba revival era, followed by brit. Pop Band Erasure with their "Abba-Esque" album in 92. ABBA themselves stepped in with "ABBA Gold" short after, and "ABBA More Gold" in 93. 😊
7:05 First General Uncertainty (EAV) from Austria was a band that brought some critical texts to the stage with fun, funny songs and lots of costumes. They had a few hits in German-speaking countries and were still active until a few years ago. Greetings from northern germany
That name is a funny variation of the "Erste Allgemeine Versicherung" (first general insurance company) which really exists in Austria. I don't know if they were amused...
Edelweiß is a plant/flower that grows only at very high altitudes in the Alps. You can see it also in the Rammstein song "Dicke Titten" where a "blind" man can't see all the beauty that's around him and steps on Edelweiß.
Funny enough there's actually a flower that's called "american edelweiss" but doesn't really belong to the same genus. Edelweiß usually it refers to Alpen-Edelweiß. In english it's actually called "edelweiss" as well. You can find it on wikipedia under the botanical name "Leontopodium nivale". The name "Edelweiß" is a compound word and literally means nobel(edel) white(weiß)
At that time there was a German music style called "the new German wave" (Neue Deutsche Welle). Nena was successful worldwide with "99 red balloons" (99 Luftballons). Interpreter "Neue Deutsche Welle": Trio, Falco, Kiz, Spider Murphy Gang, Döf, Geier Sturzflug, Peter Schilling, Erste Allgemeine Versicherung, Nena, Edelweiß.. Today the heroes from back then still tour around Germany at small festivals ;-)

Well, I think in the music of the 80s you can see the split into three categories: Handmade music. Music produced by someone with someone singing to it. And electronic music. In the 90s rap came along. And these 4 divisions remain so to this day.
Hello Joel. At school in UK "Ein Bisschen Frieden" was used to help get the kids to learn about German music, since it won Eurovision and was on TV. We then had some more traditional German songs introduced into the lessons. It was a way of bringing the language to life and giving some cultural references more of a meaning. The other song that was memorable was by Nena, released in English, but slighty different. Later in the decade there were TV pop music programmes on TV satellite channels that went all across Europe, so the style altered fro Eurovision to MTV.
So many hits from my childhood years. Alphaville's 'Sounds like a melody' is one of those songs that goes onto almost every playlist and I just cannot sit still when listening to it. And 'Die Sennerin vom Königsee' from Kiz I just rediscovered a few weeks a go and had it on repeat a few times since then.
1988 #4 is by an Austrian subversive comedy group called "Erste Allgemeine Verunsicherung" (first general uncertainty, which in itself is a wordplay with an existing insurance's name "Erste Allgemeine Versicherung" or first general insurance). It's about a womanizer who desperately wants to get in the pants and bed of a girl he just met. He woos her with the whole repertoire of chivalrous gestures until she falls for him. But when she calls him full of love the next day he tells her not to bother him again bc he's married with children and a dog. In the booklet of the album, there is a comic panel telling the story with the protagonists being penguins. and this is their stage show. The group was legendary for their stage performances like Rammstein but because of other causes, They had top 20 hits for over a decade. Even when they touch more serious topics (e.g. Chornobyl and the literal/figurative(?) fallout) it's always with a lot of (very black) humor. One song was translated into English and got a UK release. If you want to check it out: ruclips.net/video/4gSEhNPKT9g/видео.html

Hi big J! The thing is... you should look at the "Neue Deutsche Welle". It had a significant influence on later German music and represents the point in time when German music emancipated itself from the post-war era of Anglo-Saxon and American music dominance... And a little fun on the side... The blonde from the last clip in 1989 is the little sister of an old friend of mine. And we occasionally went out together in the mid- 80s to celebrate and party. Oh, the youth...

Hello, yes german songs where huge in the 80's a lot of hits in the european charts and it brought back that german songs song in german or english were very good as well in the lyrics some funny and others over welming but so good, I grew up in this era and known the most of these songs wonderful thank you for reacting to this Greetings from the Netherlands
I can't remember if I knew you had a second channel or not but wish I'd checked it out sooner as I love and I'm interested in the Netherlands. Was in Amsterdam for three days last year and going back this November and using it as a base to travel. Quite a few of those songs or bands where big in the UK too. Nena 99 Luftballons was 99 Red Balloons in the UK and sung in English got to number one here. My friend Danny from Jakarta Indonesia and I are big fans of 80's music. And he even named his son Deus after the Falco song Rock Me Amadeus which came from a movie. I discovered the artist Sandra about a year ago and was surprised how big she was in Germany and Europe. She did a cover of an old prog rock song of a UK band a song called Hiroshima. It's amazing and if you haven't heard it you should check that out. I listen to a German electronic musician called Ulrich Schnauss. It was actually my American friend from Georgia who introduced me to his music and I love it. His is sometimes dark and or moody and atmospheric and can be an acquired taste but I think its great.
a lot of the songs from the 80's was also popular here in America. I even personally have them in my music library. There was also Tokyo Hotel and Rammstein that I have listen to. The you have Michael Schenker a great German guitarist for UFO and his own band and his brother Rudolf who was in the most famous German rock band of the late 70's and 80's The Scorpions. They had some of the largest concerts in that time audience wise.

There was a song called "Edelweiss" included in the hugely successful 1966 Movie "The Sound of Music" which was presented as being a patriotic Austrian song. The song became hugely popular in The UK and a cover version in 1967 by Vince Hill got into the national charts. I've seen the song mentioned in some of the comments but I've not seen anyone pinpoint the source.

I'm quite surprised that you haven't heard of Edelweiss - as most of the Americans I know knew that word... "Edelweiss, Edelweiss, every morning you greet me. Small and white, clean and bright you look happy to greet me." might ring a bell - or bring Season vibes. Edelweiss is a small, white flower found in the Alps. Edelweiss translates to "noble white" and it was seen as a symbol of noble purity, pure love and courage (as you had to climb on the mountains to get it). It is today fully protected and must not be picked - just remember if you plan to visit the Alps on your next trip to Europe. And Edelweiss is also an Austrian beer brand.
Edelweiss is a flower that grows very high in the Alps, it is also called the killer flower because women want the edelweiss and young men climb very high in the Alps, many young men died trying to pick them because of the cold and they fell off the cliffs.
5:40 Bruce & Bongo was actually a British duo and "Geil" didn't contain German vocals besides the title. However, the audience was willing to honour the acknoledgement of German slang.
Back to my youth😁 If I remember correctly, the German songs, at least the 2 first ones were hits for my mothers generation. English texting was normal, and German textint/songs came first with the 'German wave/Deutsche Welle'. Songs like 'Da, Da, Da by Trio or 'Amadeus'by Falco

Edelweiß (Leontopodium nivale) is a mountain flower at home in the Alps, belonging to the sunflower family. Edelweiß grows in the high Alps of about 1800 - 3500 metres and is the ultimate symbol of alpinism. Edelweiß is also is also a symbol of rugged beauty and purity.

These songs were the best of all time... "Edelweiß" is in english "edelweiss", the wonderful white flower which you can only find in the top of the mountains. And the costume of a penguine at the titel "Küss die Hand schöne Frau", was a gag, with a cartoon like this on the LP cover. In those times, humor was more important, than the personal pic on the cover...😅
you should cheek out more of Sandra's music that's if you haven't already she was the main female voice of the 90's New Age group Enigma that had massive hits like Sadness Part 1 and Return to Innocence and in the mid 70's she was also in a girl group called Arabesque that where Massive in Japan
The one with the Penguin is a Austrian Band called Erste Allgemeine Verunsicherung (EAV),how to translate this ... Literally "First general Unsurance" its a comedy song band. "Verunsicherung" is a word play, "Versicherung" means Insurance and "Unsicher" means unsure.
I'm surprised that Katja Ebstein's "Theater" didn't make it in 1980. I was in Europe and mainly Germany all that summer, and "Theater" was HUGE, and got 2nd place at Eurovision. I'm also noticing that at the beginning there was still a lot of what was known as "Schlager" music, which was a style that went back to the 1950's, but it was finally fading out by the end of the decade. Freddy Quinn was probably the most famous Schlager singer. Edelweiss is a flower, and the subject of a famous song from The Sound Of Music.
Walter Werzowa aka the guy behind „Edelweiss“ is most famous for giving us the world’s famous „Intel“ jingle. Pretty sure he cashed in big on this one.

You can see it also in the Rammstein song "Dicke Titten" where a "blind" man
can't see all the beauty that's around him and steps on Edelweiß.
It also grows in the Carpathian Mountains.
Fun fact: "Modern Talking" was the first Western Band to perform in Moscow 1986.
No they weren’t. The first one was Scorpions.
Edelweiss is a flower growing on high altitude in the alps.
when you wanted to show your love to a crush it was a quest to get a edelweiss as a present for her.its rly famous in austria and switzerland.
for some reason my brain automatically thought it was also a synonym for cocaine
Don't do that nowadays though. Edelweiß is a protected species in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and picking the flowers is forbidden.
I was sure it was beer. I guess i was wrong.
@@matijamaksan4344 You're not wrong. There is an Austrian beer called Edelweiß.
The song also contains various references to beer. It is not explicitly that beer, though.
The video is really weird, worth watching for the WTF effect.
3:59 that song got a revival in the last few weeks in Germany when thousands of German soccer fans demanded it tobe the National Team's new goal song and today it actually happened
Nicole won the ESC and her last performance she sing that son in german, english, frensh and dutch....great video
The "Trio" drummer, Peter Behrens used to live right around the corner from me in Wilhelmshaven, met him a couple times in the pub, very down to earth guy, RIP
Milli Vanilli was played a lot in the eighties in dance clubs in Germany , the dance floor was always full. I loved it.🙂💜👍
Well, I think in the music of the 80s you can see the split into three categories:
Handmade music.
Music produced by someone with someone singing to it.
And electronic music.
In the 90s rap came along.
And these 4 divisions remain so to this day.
You missed out rock music bro.
@@79BlackRose
Rock and metal (witch is really big in Germany in the 80s) are also handmade music. 🤷🏼♀️
@@79BlackRose handmade music?
@@danielmcbriel1192What does "handmade music" even mean? Apart from AI generated stuff. All music is handmade.

Late Kraftwerk, Jean Michel Jarre, early Depeche Mode... "just pushed a Button".
And the biggest selling German band:
Modern Talking. 120 million copies.
And, their forgot the play Cheri Cheri Lady.
Greetings from Belgium.
Edelweiss is a flower. I'm British and a remember quite a few of these songs - the ones sung in English. Wish the clips had been longer. I'm off to RUclips to find some of them. Thank you.
Edelweiss is a band. He did not asked about a translation and where their name comes from but he asked about the band lol .. what's wrong with everybody here
@@vomm He said "What is edelwiess?" If he was asking about the band Edelwiess I believe he would have asked "Who are Edelwiess?" Even though I disagree with you I do not think there is anything 'wrong' with you.
This music is hundred times better than todays songs!
Quite a few of these songs were in the UK top 20 music charts. i remember them from my childhood we always had music playing in our house.
Do the 90's, that's when German music really took off worldwide, you'll be surprised.
Some of these songs were SCANDALOUS in their days. Falco's "Jeannie" or "Skandal um Rosi", for example.
The refrain of "Bring me Edelweiss" is taken from ABBA's song "S.O.S."
Oh, the youth...
the reaction to Erste Allgemeine Verunsicherung was picture perfect (verunsichert). Love it.
The "Edelweiß" is a flower native to the alps: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leontopodium. It's very popular in Bavaria, kind of like the maple in canada.
7:10 EAV (erste allgemeine verunsicherung) is a comedy band from austria, but with a lot of musical skills. the penguin is their mascott? well at least I've seen it on at least one album. they are really funny and make really good songs as well.
This was probably the reason I got into Hardrock and Heavy Metal at that time 😅.
The word you're looking for is Eurobeat.
I think what you meant was "neue deutsche Welle" (new german wave), because that's how it's called :)
@@RakkiOfficialno...he was talking about Sandra, Modern Talking and Alphaville....they aren't Neue Deutsche Welle
Please React to Falcos Song „Jeanny“ its a song with a story and falco is a legend in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. One of the most successfull german speaking stars :)
This clip are way too short. Too bad.
'Edelweiss'is an flower in the Alps, I gess it was a popular 'after ski' song and it was a cover from ABBA 's 'SOS'. But you only have half of the picture:the other half was not in the Bilboard, it was'the music of the youth' like Heavy Metal with groups like Van Halen or Iron Maiden, Rock like Marius Müller-Westernhagen, his song'Sexy'was famous and a'Scandal' or for us girlsPeter Maffay, especially his album/LP/record called 'Tabaluga'🙂
Number 5 (Nicole) was the first Eurovision Contest winner from Germany ever, BTW, we went to school together (not same class however, she is a few my junior). She still is living in the same village, she was born (just a couple of km from my place)
Jeanny by Falco and Maria Magdalena by Sandra where a few of my favourites from that time ❤
From the band City the best song but I guess it was in the 70 th am Fenster ,ou will be blown away. The front man died two weeks ago.
7:08 He wears a penguin costume because the penguin is also called a tailcoat wearer. The background is the Vienna Opera Ball, which at the time was seen as an event for rich snobs and was intended to be parodied. PS WHO KNOWS THIS NUMBER... 32168 ?
I remember the majority of these songs from 84 forward. They played these a lot on the radio in Nordic countries, also. I had no idea that most of these were actually German when I was a kid. They sang in English and looked cool, that was enough. My dad loved Boney M, we had multiple records by them.
Nicole with "Ein bisschen Frieden" (A Little Peace) @ 2'40" was a number one hit in the UK in 1982 as it won the Eurovision Song Contest held in Harrogate that year. I still have the 7" single in my collection. For her closing reprise of the song, Nicole sang each verse/chorus in a different language! Hello, yes german songs where huge in the 80's a lot of hits in the european charts and it brought back that german songs song in german or english were very good as well in the lyrics some funny and others over welming but so good, I grew up in this era and known the most of these songs wonderful thank you for reacting to this
Greetings from the Netherlands
@7:56 It is a fllower that is hard to obtain because it grows in the mountains.
Yes Joel. PLUS ÇA CHANGE, PLUS C'EST LA MÊME CHOSE!
That list had many songs that were hits in Finland in the 80’s( Falco, Boney M,Alphaville,Sandra,Opus ym) Thank you good memories 💖🇫🇮
a lot of the songs from the 80's was also popular here in America.
Apart from Rammstein, there are other bands that have lasted for decades
Die Toten Hosen and Die Ärzte
RIP Falco❤
1982 #5 "Ein bisschen Frieden" -> "A little bit of peace" sung by Nicole won the 1982 European Song Contest. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ein_bi%C3%9Fchen_Frieden
Forever Young with Alphaville was the biggest hit in sweden 1984
There was a song called "Edelweiss" included in the hugely successful 1966 Movie "The Sound of Music" which was presented as being a patriotic Austrian song. The song became hugely popular in The UK and a cover version in 1967 by Vince Hill got into the national charts. I've seen the song mentioned in some of the comments but I've not seen anyone pinpoint the source.
There is a similar video for the 90s and many of the iconic songs were popular all over the world
99 red Ballons from NENA was in FEB 1984 on the second place of the Billboard Charts in USA. Number 1 in Japan, Mexico, Kanada and Australia.
Wheres Markus with "Ich gib Gas"!?
This was my highschool decade and many of these songs bring back party memories and good vibes 🕺😅
But 90's Eurodance was even better. Check out SNAP!, Mr.President, Culture Beat, La Bouche, Vengaboys, Ace of Base... 😋 I'm 55 now, still listening to this shit🤣
There is a video with songs from 1990 to 1999 that you might like too. It should be from the same channel as this video.
Sun of Jamaica. I rememer watching a Movie as a Child using that song. I don't really remember which one it was. It was a good movie.
the "theme" in the 80s in germany is NDW (new german wave) its a really crazy time for german music ^^
"Ein bisschen Frieden" - Nicole won the Eurovision Song Contest on April, 24th 1982 - exactly 6 months before my birth - Jesus.. I am old xDDDD
No 5. Won the Eurovision Song Contest for GERMANY 🇩🇪.
edelweiss is a flower growing high up in the bavarian-german alps. you missed the songs theater by katja ebstein, and johnny blue by lena valaitis, both ranked nr.2 at the esc song festival.
An Edelweiss can be found in many logos around alpine organisations, hotels and gear.
Another really awesome video Joel you are such a awesome dude My favourite youtuber ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Edelweiss is a flower that grows very high in the Alps, it is also called the killer flower because women want the edelweiss and young men climb very high in the Alps, many young men died trying to pick them because of the cold and they fell off the cliffs.
4:38 Sandra war das erste Album was ich mir organisiert habe… und zwar als Kopie auf einer Kassette 😂❤
Listen to the songs in which German is sung and get the corresponding lyrics. These are the really good songs in the list and some of them have really good humor, such as "Der Nippel" or "Guten Morgen liebe Sorgen".
Edelweiß is a little white flower that grows in the alps. In Germany this music style you just hear, was called NDW. Neue deutsche Welle. New german wave... It should partly represent the lightness of being. Fun and fun and fun. Oh, did i mentioned fun?
The penguin group is called EAV. Back then they were known for their weirdness.
^^ Bruce and Bongo are from the UK and heard the word "geil" adapted it and put it into a song... 😉🤷
Hallo from germany, every time, when i see you, i think at a german actor/Singer called "olli p." you looks like him.
You can find him at the net. Have a nice day ...
Definitely check out some EAV videos. It's comedy but often on social topics and man these guys were good musicians.
Hi, Joel! ..."Everything changes but nothing changes"! You have interesting thoughts, and maybe your`re right!
I`m german and had some kind of VN Flashback! xD the Wave Songs like Alphaville or Falco are on my todays playlist on the other hand :P
The music of that time is called Synth Pop , which was the general sound that defined the 1980s 🎹
Edelweiss is a small flower that grows high up in the Alps. It is among other things a flower a guy would get a girl he loves. There were difficult to get to so also a sign of bravery . They are protected now.
You really need to the video "songs you didn't know were german". Another youtuber was blown away by it...
Definitely check out sandra "heat of the night" and "heaven can wait"
Erste Allgemeine Verunsicherung (the song with the bird guy) was a parody band from Austria.
Walter Werzowa aka the guy behind „Edelweiss“ is most famous for giving us the world’s famous „Intel“ jingle.
Pretty sure he cashed in big on this one.
One of the “Geier Sturzflug” is a costumer from me, today.
So sad that the snippets were so short. It's impossible to get the feeling of the song.
