- Transmission Conversion Breakdown. Automatic to Manual
Darion Farina is in the process of converting his 2004 Mazda Rx8 from automatic to manual, while his Renesis is serviced by Maple Racing.
The engine is undergoing a more aggressive street-porting than it already had with machined coolant passages, and 6-port stationary gears.
We purchase our RX8 engines and transmissions from JDM Place of Houston. They’re a great resource for high quality used JDM parts.
There are a few minor details we didn’t include in the video, mainly pertaining to the interchangeability of all RX8 transmissions, in an effort to keep it simple enough for a novice to follow along with.
If you are left with questions after watching this, please post them on our Ricer Rescue Facebook Group, and we’ll get back to you right away!
Thanks for watching!
I love this guy... super helpful. I have 4 rx8s and learned a ton from him..... keep the video coming
This is gold !! Well done &Thank you.
Thank you for this video! You’ve helped me narrow down the parts list for my 2010 manual swap. The last couple of minutes was exactly what I needed to hear and learn, as most posts I’ve seen seem to reference the S1’s only and don’t mention anything about what to do with the S2’s. Thank you again!
Great job ❤❤❤
See ive been thinking it would be too hard but now I really want to swap my 05 because I just got to have that 6 port engine lol and you say everything bolts right up thats pretty cool
Would this work with a 07 you think?
@@gearedupproduction8290 should be pretty easy to do now the newer rx8 models probably not a good idea but 07 should work
@@gearedupproduction8290 yes, you will need everything I mentioned plus the power plant frame and driveshaft, sorry for the late response.
Great video; thanks. I'm considering doing this on the 06 Automatic Shinka that I recently inherited from my dad. I'm in the Houston area. I can do all the work myself (have built a car & have a 2-post lift in my shop). But I'm new to tye RX8 world. Any idea about what I'd need to plan for in terms of money and what to look for when doing that to source a good manual trans car for parts?
I jus caught ur channel.... Nice work on the 84..... You guys go to any meets. I'm in the texas city area. I have a 85 gsl-se..... Prestine condition.... B cool to hang out with rotor heads 👍
Look us up on facebook. I'll add you to the local community private chat.
I need information on my 2005 4 port Automatic.
Will a 6speed transmission bolt up? What do I need to know ?
In the same boat. Buying a project car, but I want to swap the transmission for a manual while the engine is out
@@Tyufoe96 ask me in a week, we'll see how mine pans out.
and 9 days later (sorry i've been slack) yes, it will bolt up !
Ill be trying to DCT it instead
Thanks for this video, doing this exact swap. Question - the wiring under the steering it looks like you “T” ‘d into the wire vs cutting it and using only 1 end of the original wire? I am seeing this correctly? Looks like you also did this “T” splice under the fuse box? Please confirm
I found out today just how different a 6port automatic vs a 6port manual rear iron is. The auto has a very different starter bolt-up configuration (bolts go into iron perpendicular to the iron, vs. the manual starter bolts up like the transmission does - longitudinally).
I searched but no luck - is there any sort of conversion plate to enable using a manual starter on an automatic rear iron?
Huge fan guys. Just recently bought a 09 rx8 and I was planning to manual swap and rebuild it, but it's a little out my knowledge range. Do y'all offer this? If so what's a rough estimate to get this done with you guys? Thanks!
I do mine, it may seem complex but this engine is just big Legos. A shop can get you a rebuild for prov 3 maybe 4k.
One day I'll buy rx8 almost got that red shell that just sold
Hi awesome video. I just did the same swap. Did everything as you said. I have donor 04rx8 and swapped into a 05 rx8 . I changed ignition and gave the keys but no spark at all . Can’t figure out why. Someone told me to change keyless module also . Do u think that’s my issue ? Please any advice would be great . Ty
I am putting a 4port auto engine into another car with an old school auto that only has a neural and park switch. I don’t have a manual 4port harness and money is tight can I use the auto harness still? It will not be connected to the transmission at all. I’m just curious if using th auto harness would need anything to work or if I would still be able to start and run the engine?
Great vid bud!

There’s no need for a conversion plate. The flywheel/trans combo decide that. You’ll just be missing the ear on the engine side for the starter, but that’s okay because the manual starter bolts to the trans not the engine.
The only reason it would be necessary to make a plate for that part of the engine is to keep dirt out of that area. My manual swap utilizes an auto rear iron and I’ve had that hole exposed this entire time with no Ill effects. 25k miles on the swap so far.
@@darionfarina2069 much appreciate the detailed response! Hope it will help others too.
Hey man, I did the entire swap, I’m wondering, would I need the Automatic control module on in order for the car to be able to turn on?
I’m getting crank, spliced the wire to the firewall n to the clutch itself. It’s cranking. My main question is. WOULD I NEED A TCM
I know this is late but i have a 6 speed manual which is a 05 and would have a six port engine so would it just drop into the 07 roller i got?? Its the automatic which i wanna drop my 6spd out my one w the rotted frame and the engine out of it too. Thanks
Correct. You could even use your ‘05 keys and locks and stuff and abs module, do a complete electronics swap and it’ll be just like having a good ‘05 car.
Has anyone swapped a 4 port with a 6 speed? Is it possible? If not why is it not?
I’ve heard many folks say it is not possible. I’m here to tell you that the bell housing bolts are the same and all mounting points look the same. In the UK they do it so at this point I say that it should work. 6 speeds are just weaker than the 5 to my understanding
Hey man I’ve watched all your videos on this manual swap and I’m interested to know is there any way we can get in touch over the phone I’m trying to gather help from anyone I can I started the swap and now I’m stumped pretty bad
What went wrong?
for an 07 would I need to swap the engine since it is a 6port or would I just need a new driveshaft, and how much do you think everything would cost'
You will need everything mentioned in the video plus the new driveshaft, new power plant frame, and a manual engine wiring harness and starter harness(or you could extend your existing starter harness if you’re comfortable with it), otherwise it should work just fine.
So if i have a donor manual 05 can i just drop the drive shaft from that one into the 07?
Yep
Clutch switch wont prevent starting?
Its wired straight to the ignition switch, so no it won’t unless you wire it inline with the wire you run from the ignition switch to the relay.
What did you do about the rear end of the engine not being the same between the two transmissions?
Sorry I’m late to this, but a simple plate could be fabricated to cover the hole in the block for the auto starter, in my case I rebuilt the engine and actually imported a 4 port manual engine to go with the transmission, so my engine has a manual, 4 port rear iron that doesn’t have the provision for the auto starter.
However it doesn’t matter, you could just fab a plate to cover the hole, or run it open.
To add to this, auto and manual bellhousing patterns are the same, so it doesn’t matter whether you use an auto rear iron for a manual swap, but you couldn’t use the manual rear iron for an auto.
Can I please have the list of things I need , I have a 04 rx8
Everything is mentioned in the video. Id recommend just taking notes.
Did you have to wire the clutch pedal at all?
The clutch operation is purely hydraulic. There are no wires.
Correct, in my case, you can wire the clutch switch in though, it’s just as simple as running a wire to and from it to the ignition switch and the starter relay.
do you have to have a 6 port to swap the 6 speed?
Nope. You can use a 6 speed on a 4 port as well.
@@darionfarina2069 ^can confirm this also
@@nvmyutube from 1978 to 2012 the rotary bellhousing bolt pattern is the same for all 12a/13b Mazda rotary engines. You can use a 12a trans all the way up to an RX-8 6 speed for any rotary engine as long as the counterweight on the flywheel matches the rotating assembly it’s paired with.
could you give a rough estimate on cost for manual swapping a 07 rx8
Roughly $1,000
Well this answers my question
@@themotorlawcompany4673 is that to pay someone to do it or just parts in general.
@@gearedupproduction8290 cost of parts. We would probably charge around $350-$500 for labor depending on circumstance.
Most shops will charge over $1000 in labor or simply wont consider the job.
@@themotorlawcompany4673 that’s really not bad
