  • After years with the same design, the Hiby R3 is finally updated with an all-new chassis, a volume, knob, and some updated software. AND it's cheaper, now priced well under $200. So is one of the last budget DAPs cheaper and better than ever? I've been using it for months to find out.

Great review as always. For an all in one, the less effort to carry and wearable M0 and M0 Pro is the king of portability when you get used to operating it. Also with Shanling vs others.. yes sound characteristics is distinguishable even on blind testing.

Totally agree about the jacks on the bottom, and the volume wheel - game changers. I'm going to get this up for commuting on the train. BTW, Shanling and Hidisz still make competting models.

0:40 Shanling has the M0 Pro and the M1s and Hidizs has the AP80 Pro X (they really should consider updating to a new model at this point). The M1s is definitely the closer competition due to their relatively similar price points and form factor IMO.

An album art cache for the list view would have been really cool. But if it's unimplemented, I agree that it's best to leave it out to avoid slowness and pop-in.

I just got this recently to take to work and to go out with because it fits easily in my pocket with my cell phone as opposed to my R6 III. I had the Pro saber and it was okay. However, I had playback issues in the begining of every album and sometimes navigation caused skips and artifacts during playback. I use the balance and the sound seems larger. I remember being underwhelmed by the pro saber thinking it was dry. The amp on this one just seems to be better at driving my headphones so that may be why. I can't listen to iems because they give me earaches so I tend to have harder to drive headphones.

Looking through how tracks are listed in the “Album Artist” category (bottom right), it looks like that view is preserving album order. It would probably be more obvious what’s going on in there if they used the track sub-descriptor to give the track’s album instead of the artist. I don’t know why Hiby decided to create a whole category to answer your use case instead of just giving the artist category sort options.

    Top review..👍
A few questions, I have the R3 Gen II albeit awaiting a repair after it met the floor rather quickly..😭😭.
I am wanting to use the 4.4 balanced output, basically to see if the difference in output power is better.
    I like loud.😏
    380mW for 4.4mm from 112mW from 3.5mm.
I’m using some truthear crinacle zero reds at the moment & wondered if it’s better just to get the balanced cable & plug the pins directly into the earpiece or better to buy some balanced headphones..🎧.

12:00 The player DOES have this functionality. It is under the MUSIC settings under "Play through albums". If you turn that on then it will play the next album in sequence once the one you were just listening to ends.

    • @SuperReview
      @SuperReview  7 месяцев назад

Typically "play through albums" will indeed play through albums in the correct song order, but will not stay within a selected artist -- once it finishes playing through all albums of one artist, it'll advance to the next, which is not what I want.

@@SuperReview Ohh I misunderstood. I was also wrong about this functionality! Turns out this only works in the ALBUMS section not the ARTIST section. Thanks for this video. I've had the R3 II since yesterday, it's a good little DAP,
it would be really great IF there weren't some big problems: I can't access my QOBUZ account (if anyone has the same problem as me, let me know) The keyboard is based on an old system of 90s this is not acceptable because there would be room to put all the letters, the little shanling Q1 fits there and it is much smaller!
the interface is really not practical, for example, there is no way to return to the main screen without going up the entire screen chain, and no effective shortcut like on all devices of this type Currently. As for the sound, it's good.with Iem, and good Bluetooth too The device is handy and pleasant but I think I will still send it back if I cannot resolve this Qobuz account problem. Damage . But I already have a Shanling Q1 (without Qobuz) and a Fiio M 11

I live in Cambodia and I can't audition much of anything. Right now I'm torn between a gently used Fiio M11 or a brand new Hiby R3 ii (gen2), as reviewed here. The price of the two units is about the same. I like the idea of getting new kit in general but I'm not thrilled with the Hiby's aesthetic.
The good news is that the Android capability of the M11 means *nothing* to me: I'm looking for a music player with a metal chassis, a separate line out and headphone out, an option to select the line out to bypass the internal DAC and output a digital audio signal, a crank-wheel volume knob, and the best possible sound for less than $200. If the Fiio sounds better I'll probably risk the second-hand status for the improved aesthetic. If the Hiby sounds better, I'll probably live with the lousy aesthetic in order to have the peace of mind of buying new.
    Any reactions would be appreciated.

Actually i can easily differentiate players according to their sound quality even in blind tests A B tests.. specially sony and fiio ones.. BUT i totally understand and respect that there other people that can't find or don't care about those differences and i find them very lucky as they make their decisions based on some other aspects that are really important to .. i mean .. how many times I've liked a player's sleekness ,awesome design, size ,good interface , speed but its sound is not my favorite so i skip it 😢
That been said and despite the difference between my preferences and yours ,i don't miss any of your video reviews because i like the way you describe each aspect that matters to you and me of course and how your videos are "clean" and well directed ❤❤

Could you share the details/methodology of your tests? Results (10 out of 10?), test conditions/environment, gear used, etc. If you are talking about what you have noticed when doing it yourself at home and not in a test environment where others are involved and it is legitimately "blind" that is a different thing to a proper test. That would be more opinion/placebo.

    • @mmetmalachite2653

@@PerputuallyCensored Yes i am talking about a blind a/b test and my best friend who suggested the idea from the beginning as a friendly and fun challenge for me because he didn't believe why i like sony players sound and don't like some others specially the dry sounding ipods. SO..
-His challenge was 10 songs with different genera between ipod touch 4th gen. and sony zx1 volume matched with white noise by me and him before we begin the test.
-The iem was shure se535 .
      - both players were behind my back and me blind folded .
He was taking every measure that I can't get any advantage of it 😂😂 .. needless to say that playback weren't systemic some times he falsely switch the same player twice !!
It was my first blind test and was not so sure ..so, we agreed that i will tell what i like the most not which one is which ..
For my surprise during the test i was able to tell which i liked more and tell the player also ! .. while it was a real blind test but wasn't that blind to me if you know what i mean !! ..
i gave (9) for my preferred device zx1 and ( 1) for the ipod as i liked it more with electronic music as it sounded clearer and wider with a more defined impact bass.
Yes the differences were so small and wasn't sure what the test results after we finished and him announcing me with my results .. it was very fun indeed and even if i was failed in that test i would continue with my opinion 😂😂
those small things that differentiate between good listening experience and immersive one .. at least for me
      Peace ❤

Fair enough, though not particularly scientifically controlled or a DAP comparison if comparing an iPod to a Sony DAP. Bit of an unfair fight.
I was curious of your methodology because a legitimate blind A/B should meet certain requirements/criteria. That would include: Using more than 1 set of IEMs/Headphones (including ones you're not familiar with), using the same music and varying the genre, repeated listens to determine averages/scores (how often was any difference heard out of 10/20/30/40/50 listens per song?), identical noise floor (where possible), etc.
I have the Hiby r3 ii and Sony A55 (like for like) and I can hear an audible difference, the noise floor. If that could be removed or normalised on both players I don't think anyone could consistently tell the difference in a proper blind A/B. If you compare DAPs with an equal noise floor that are roughly like for like (specs, price point, power) I think you'll struggle. More importantly, I've never seen any evidence or proof, via public tests, that folks can tell the difference. I've only ever heard anecdotes regarding claims of hearing differences in a blind A/B. Never seen any proof for the claims. @@mmetmalachite2653

@@PerputuallyCensored i agree with most of your reply of course .. it wasn't a fair fight yes .. that what I've struggled to tell my friend 😂😂 so he offered me that challenge ..
Yes it was non scientific.. for 2 reasons :
1- I don't care that much for convincing any one with any of my personal opinions and believes ... Some people say they can hear diff. between cables materials .. i don't believe that and i don't hear differences between cable materials but all power to them if that makes them happy 🤷.
2- as i said it was a fun and friendly game for me and that's it 😁 but we were as honest and real as we can with what available between our hands
I agree that the nois floor is one of the most obvious hearable thing in an audio device .. yes
But the second most noticeable thing is the sound sig. Of the source like : warm - neutral- bright hence come the synergy between the source and the iem or headphone .
Then come the technical aspects of the sound that people will struggle with including me very tiny and not apparent with all materials and tracks and similar in most of what I've tried except few like : imagining -layering etc.

Worse battery life in a new model is definitely not the way to go.
While browsing the previous model R3 Pro Saber would randomly lock up and reboot often because of having to constantly populate album arts on the fly. Maybe that's why they got rid of album arts in browsing in this one.
Album arts display only when browsing in album mode. Not in other modes.
As others have mentioned, browsing by Album Artist instead of Artist will list albums alphabetically.

I got this player to be a take on the go work player so my expensive iBasso Audio player doesn't get lost or damaged and it does not book mark or stop and recover from where I left off in the lecture. As a music player I'm sure it's fine but for my purposes it is a paperweight. Maybe I will see if one of my kids want it.

From the main menu, tap Music and then tap the gear icon in the top-right corner. Scroll down to Resume play from last and you can change it to resume from last position. Hope that helps.

Lack of 4.4mm + form factor seem like the only real downsides. I think for some though, the minimalism of the R3 Pro 2 will still reign supreme @@SuperReview
