    Deep Fried Pork Intestines. You want to try and find a vendor or restaurant that makes the effort to clean out the intestines properly. That will take much of the funk out, and you will enjoy it so much more.

    I grew up in Hong Kong, and the taste I miss most is the fish balls. I recall that there used to be a hawker right outside the school I went to, so it was pretty much a daily before school snack. I can't wait to go back for a visit.

    Fantastic video! Love how you present the food with honest opinions. The "turkey kidney" that you had is actually turkey giblet or gizzard. Direct translation of the Chinese name of what you ate IS kidney. But what you had is actually the gizzard. Close enough, at the end of the day, they are all organ meat. Keep up the great work! Being born and raised in HK and now emigrated, what you presented sure brings back waves of nostalgia.

    Your intro is spot on and brilliant! Hong Kong does have the highest eat-lets per citizen in the world. That said, Hong Kongers' craziness and passion of food sometimes embarrass me (seems we don't care things other than our stomach)! So brave of you trying the street foods at Mongkok. We love street foods but I'd never buy from those stalls at those locations - hygiene is questionable (even their food might be clean, the heavy air pollution of the busy streets is not appetising). Also brave of you trying stinky tofu, pig intestine and "lo mei" - lots of locals avoid these foods. 😛

      Hi Alan thanks for your comment. It varies between stall to stall and shop to shop. With some, the staff and menus communicate in English, but on the other end of the spectrum, English is zero. Even in this case though, the staff have seen it all before and are usually experts in understanding hungry person sign language, so you can usually successfully get what you want!

      @HongKongHoods  3 года назад +1

      Good on you Dan, I certainly will give them another chance, as I can imagine that when one is used to the gamey taste, they can be nice with the proper condiments. Stinky tofu is certainly worth a try, especially drizzled in a bit of chilli sauce!

      @@HongKongHoods i think the stall that you went to didnt clean it properly. I believe they usually put the intestine up to a hose and flush water through it for a long time.. if they dont do that long enough.. you guessed it.. that is what the gamey bad taste comes from..

    Pig intestine can be really delicious if done right. Yes, it can be an acquired taste but if presented in the right way it's not hard to enjoy. If the smell is overpowering then they didn't do a good job at cleaning it which involves a lot of work and oftentimes they cheap out on the process. The hint is when it's overly oily inside, they probably didn't clean it thoroughly. When nicely cleaned and fried and dipped in the simple soy sauce, the intestine provides great texture and mouth feel, crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside and with right flavoring it can be heaven. It comes down to cleaning it right and frying it right. If over fried, it can dry and the skin has a bitter taste to it, like burnt toast. Some of the more exotic types can stuff it with sweet rice and other ingredients to diversify the flavor. To me the simplest is the best: when well cleaned and fried it provides one of the great food pleasures in life. Don't give it up yet, keep trying till you find the right one! Again, excellent work, Sam!
