10. Lightning Lookout (DKC3): Famous for being very hard and intense, lightning that predicts you’re every move. Only experience can help you navigate this level without being struck, especially while you’re crossing the water portions. 00:00
9. Homecoming Hijinx (DKCTF): Epic is the word that comes to mind when you hear the full orchestra soundtrack behind this ice fortress that’s falling apart. DK returns to his jungle; the same one, in fact, as the one he ventured through back in Returns. A few familiar landmarks, such as his treehouse and some statues are visible a short distance away. As you climb, cling, and jump between the dangerous walls, the music really motivates you by providing you with your very own anthem. 2:56
8. Frantic Fields (DKCTF): When you first enter the level, you’re wandering through what looks like a sandstorm in a safari like setting. Sand is blowing everywhere and little whirlwinds get in your way here and there. Then enemies start flying at you from the background and across the screen and you start to realize this isn’t like any other storm you’ve seen. And then, suddenly the winds pick up and you see bolts of lightning everywhere and a large shadowy figure approaching. It’s a super tornado. 6:48
7. Sunset Shore (DKCR): Basically, you’re cruising along a beautiful shore while the tropical sunset lights up the background, which consists of the beach, the sea, several ships, and even sea stacks that form the shape of a banana when looked at from the right angle. DK, Diddy, and everything else in the foreground is seen as shadows and silhouette, due to the direction of the light source, and all you can see, color-wise, are the red tie and baseball cap. 11:30
6. Animal Antics (DKC2): Widely regarded as the second game’s hardest level, this Lost World gem features all five of the animal buddies in a different setting, something never seen before or since. The premise alone is new and exciting. 13:30
5. Snow Barrel Blast (DKC): The most difficult level of the first game, this entry has you exploring the snowy mountains at a lenient pace for the first half, and then tackling a long series of fast-moving, spinning barrels while trying to avoid moving zingers-during a blizzard, of course. 16:25
4. Klobber Karnage (DKC2): It’s not one of those levels you can just have a perfect run-through without having played it before. There’s a lot of risk involved. And in a few spots, you have more than one path to take. So some level of strategy and planning is required. 18:43
3. Krevice Kreepers (DKC3): Obnoxious barrels containing creepy creatures called Klasps chase after you every time you use their ropes. If they reach you, they explode, you die, etc. The weird thing is watching the Klasps move their limbs so fast does sort get you into a state of panic. 20:59
2. Sawmill Thrill (DKCTF): First you’re safely chilling under some trees while a storm brews in the distance, then you jump in a mine cart, assuming that you’re going for a a ride through the forest on a metal railroad in the thunderstorm. Then you notice that the trees become scarce and that they are all chopped down. And then you hit a barrel and BZZOWW! CLANK! It’s a mine cart stage through a Sawmill Factory! 23:23
1. Grassland Groove (DKCTF): Yes, you were all correct. Grassland Groove has earned its spot as my personal #1 favorite level of all time. Festive African music, dancing trees, and giant puppets parading around. It’s one of those levels where you actually want to take your time and just admire its execution. 25:08
