    Black sand actually does have uses. It's a great abrasive for sandblasting. Black sand was also historically a source of iron that when mixed carbon in a ratio of 1-2% by weight was used to smelt steel. Traditional Japanese steel called tamahagane is still made this way in Japan by a very few traditional steel makers. They still use the clay furnaces and it takes days sometimes longer for the artisan to finish making the steel.

    • @kingdarkem
      @kingdarkem Год назад +4

      @@Wigglewonks I get invited but I usually dont go... But I get why your being sarcastic.
      A 5 gallon bucket of black sand when smelted into bloomery steel. How much do you think that would cost? Per kg the cost is 120 dollars. That bucket if dry would weigh about 70 pounds. That bucket of what gold miners consider waste is actually worth about 8400 dollars to the right person. That translates to that bucket being over 4 ounces of gold in worth. Smelted into bloomery steel (tamahagane) the price goes up. A 1500 gram chunk of high grade tamahagane or roughly 3 pound chunk can fetch as much as 3000 dollars once forged. Youd have close to 10 times that in that simple 5 gallon bucket if you could get the good stuff out of it. So that simple bucket could be worth as much as 15 ounces of gold.

    • @Wigglewonks
      @Wigglewonks Год назад

      @@kingdarkem umm, what’s the cost to have someone collect, prepare and ship to the guy who’s going to “smelt into bloomers steel?”

    • @kingdarkem
      @kingdarkem Год назад +2

      @@Wigglewonks well a small gold miner saving the black sand should be able to fill the bucket. As for processing into steel you really dont need much. A small backyard foundary will do number of youtube videos on cobbling one for steel together. To add carbon simple charcoal will do....if you got a fireplace sift the ashes. The lumps of charcoal set aside along with some of that ash. The ash makes for a great flux to remove impurities. To get the carbon youd only need a pound of charcoal.
      Doing it yourself is significantly cheaper then mailing it go be smelted. After initial investment you can get an ROI after a single smelting.
      Plus the smelting foundary could be used for smelting that gold into ingots.
      The regular sand can also be used. In the foundary to make glass. Limestone or seashell works great along with fireplace ash. ;)
      From there the worlds your oyster...i try not to waste stuff if possible. ;)

    Just to be clear here the sand in those bags is regional. Some states the sand will have small amounts of gold while other states probably wont. Thats why his play sand was so dark. Where I am at play sand is more yellow/brown.

      They also assay the sand to determine if there is an economic amount of gold in it. Gravel pits do the same.

    Bought a couple bags of sand from my local nursery store. It was processed by a quarry in Wisconsin, glacial sand, brought down from up north by ice age glaciers. Nothing special, just play box sand. Left the top of the bag open, and after a few days of wind and rain, I noticed a tiny bright sparkle. Think a few grains of gold, and next to them a group of tiny red-orange crystals gathered in a small valley in the sand. Think they were garnets. The gold was very small, but you would have removed them. (Pickers?). Went back a day later and it looked like a squirrel had been digging in the bag, we have a lot of them digging in the garden. So they were gone. I suspect there is an interesting amount of gold in Wisconsin glacial sand, but it would cost more to process it than it’s worth….

    • @Levacque

      Oh wow, all the glacial till from north of the great lakes must have ended up in your state! My family worked/still work as miners in Ontario so I think often about the sheer volume of heavy metals in the granite right at the surface, not to mention the amethyst shops nearly everywhere. Now you've given me something cool to further consider - the exposed Canadian Shield means that all sorts of metal- and gem-heavy dust has been rubbed off and pushed south!

    Hey Pauly, you ever think about carrying a extendable magnet? To save you the time of finding nails repeatedly. Just watched the deepest dive video from a while back. Just an idea, less bending🥂

    Done this before. Had an engineer friend who was bord and we tried it with a case of beer and a home made sluice box. New project is 6inch by 6inchb by 4 inch Tupperware full of 1-in diameter glass discs with gold on both sides. Got to find something to dissolve...
