I think that the Glass shows a world in which Kris never existed, like what Goner kid says in Undertale. The first one, seeing through your hand, is self explanatory because it's a literal representation of not existing. The second one, Susie acting coldly, is how she would be acting if the events of Deltarune up to this point never took place; Susie stopped acting so coldly because of the events of Chapter 1.

I’ve seen this theory floating around but some people don’t like it because it would imply that Kris is actually the knight. But it could also mean that the knight became the knight or is doing their knight things because of Kris, this supports that the knight is someone we know or have heard of, so it could technically still be anybody in the light world. Since the castle town dark world is in the supply closet, it could be inferred that Kris just never went into the supply closet before, so they don’t have any memory of what it looks like. It’s implied Kris has been in the unused classroom and computer labs before the dark world stuff, so they would have memories to see through the dark crystal(s)

That if it shows us the truth (which i dont really think it does but what im about to say could apply to some other interpretations as well) it could be showing us what susie would/will think of the PLAYER not kris. I highly doubt that susie and kris will have any beef with eachother as some people here are saying but it may make sense for her to be upset with the player even in a normal/pacifist route. In my opinion, the glass is showing Kris's insecurities. In the first chapter, because they're being controlled by us, them seeing through their hand could be seen as some sort of "out of body experience". The one in chapter two could be because now that Kris has a friend (Toriel implies that they don't have many friends) they are worried about Susie not wanting to be friends anymore, thus the cold glare.
Edit: After thinking, the Chapter 1 glass is probably more so due to Kris being a bit of an introvert, and not sticking out much. Therefore, their hand being invisible could be about how they feel invisible, or that they don't matter.

    • @riluna3695

This has interesting ramifications when we consider the same effect on the Dark Worlds. Kris's insecurities there would be about losing those worlds, and them just being normal again, no more adventures with Susie.

This is my opinion as well. Glass (and mirrors) are often used in narratives to represent perception. So the simplest answer in my eyes is just that the shadow crystal and glass show what Kris perceives to be true, with a "dark tint" as it were.

Hoping to patch things up in some way. Might also be why they leave the door open. So someone, perhaps Asgore, might come running as well.

  • @MeloniestNeon
    @MeloniestNeon 11 месяцев назад +578

I have a theory that the glass is "mirroring" future events. For instance, Susie being mad at Kris could be a mirror of something to come, possibly in a much later chapter when she finds out they've been opening dark fountains, or just some other conflict between the two. As for Kris' hand disappearing, it could signify the end of the game and Kris either dying, our connection to them disappearing, or something else entirely. I suspect that the glass goes in reverse order; Chapter 1 being foreshadowing for chapter 7, ch.2 for ch 6, and so on.

One possibility I thought of is that they essentially show inversion of light and dark. When used in the dark world, Kris holds it up to the surroundings and it shows the light world. Another great theory that I saw was that the crystals were "dead hope". An image of the users hopes and dreams being shattered. Use it by yourself and it shows yourself gone, forgotten about, and living in a world where everything functions fine, but you don't exist. Shattering Kris's hope of being known and themselves. I like the thought that the glass piece in the real world is reflecting how the characters feel about themselves, and the shadow crystal reflects what is actually "real." Kris isn't so much of a ghost, more that they feel that they actually aren't "there" while Susie sees herself still as a bully. The Dark World allows them to be who they want to be: Kris has something motivating them and Susie can be something more than just the villain/a bully.
So, the shadow crystal reflects what the reality is: They are still inside a room filled with toys, or in a computer lab. And the glass piece reflects their lingering insecurities of "who" they are. The glass pieces are showing different perceptions opposite of where they are used. The real world shows internal realities, while the Dark World shows external realities.
The reason why the shadow crystal doesn't work in Castle Town... is because Castle Town isn't inside the janitor's closet. The janitor's closet is the area preceding Castle Town, while Castle Town itself is its own special area connecting the closet to the abandoned classroom (and certainly the computer lab, too). Hence why darkners can live there without turning to stone.

This is super interesting! The glass and crystal showing things as they were makes a lot of thematic sense, too-many characters throughout the game are constantly talking about the past and how things used to be, usually in a nostalgic manner.

Kris can have a mindset of "what if she is faking being my friend ?" because even if they value Susie, the fact that they never had friends before can cause them to have self-doubt and make them think no one would truly want to be their friend.

For comparison, Noelle and Ralsei, who barely know each other, heal only 50 with each other's tea. Kris only heals 60 from Ralsei's Tea, maybe because they are creeped out by him resembling their brother (Ralsei heals 120 from Kris Tea), and Noelle and Kris both heal 70 with each other's tea because while they are childhood friends, they are confused about their friendship, their personalities don't really align. I've had a theory for a while that the Glass are representative of Kris's psyche, particularly the pieces clouded by things like trauma, depression, and self-loathing.
The one where their hand disappears in front of their face is like the part of them that tells themselves "Everything would be better off if you disappeared."
And the one where Susie stares coldly at Kris is the part that says that Susie is only pretending to tolerate Kris and actually hates them.
(While this may be obviously untrue, someone who is hurting in this way may not be able to stop themselves from these feelings.)
I also think this may connect to the Dark-colored blogposts on Noelle's blog, the ones that are black and gray instead of pink and Christmas themed. They all seem strange and surreal or have connections to some strange stuff, and the one about Susie and Kris ("Th3_n3w3st_g1rl_g1rl") directly contradicts a lot of established facts from the game, to the point of seeming like some kind of twisted version of the morning of chapter 2.

Saw some other people saying, and I agree, the crystal may be showing the fears and insecurities of the holder, in this case, kris. So, it is still showing the 'truth', but not the objetivity of whats happening in the light world, just the truth of what's going on in Kris' head. They fear they are a nobody, they fear Susie will ever look at them in a cold way. I know Susie just threatened them a few days prior, but I think there's a difference: before, she was intimidating, scary, she put on a perform of disliking everyone and being 'mean' (tho there's some indication Kris never took all of that serious); now, they are friends, Kris truly loves Susie and would hate to lose her. When they see Susie looking 'in a cold way' at them, the implication is not that Susie is looking as she did before, in a intimidating way, but a disappointed, angry in a 'I am your friend and I can't believe you did that' way. In my opinion, it shows Kris fear of maybe doing something that's disappoints Susie and makes them lose her.
So, the crystal in the dark world: since the worlds seem to be close related to the lightners, always show the truth about where materially it comes from
In the light world: show the truth about the fears of the lightner holding it

You know how things in the Light World are boring and mundane, but they become awesome and fantastical in the Dark World? I don't believe the shard of Glass has magical powers in the Light World.
Imagine for a moment that you're holding a tiny mirror. It reflects the scenery behid you, which probably looks a whole like the scenery in front of you. As you hold it in just the right way it may seem, for just a brief moment, that you're looking through your hand.
When you stop looking at Susie with the glass, she's "smiling and making a rude gesture". I don't think this is spontanious behavior, it looks like she's teasing Kris. She saw her dork of a friend looking at her face with a tiny mirror, tried to scare them with a cold glare, then she teased them.
Notably, neither of those events are followed by a "... but, it must've just been your imagination". Kris knows exactly what the Glass is doing, and has no reason to excuse it.

That very last point is very interesting to me. We know Kris existed in hometown before the events of the game, but the history of their Soul is less certain. If we somehow replace or override Kris’s Soul at the start of Chapter 1, it’s possible that the Shadow Crystal can’t display what state Kris was in before that point

Starting the game at a later chapter just means the world was created at THAT point, and the previous chapters are "Last-Thursday'ed" into occurring.

I really like WeaselWeaselW's interpretation of shadow crystals being "shattered dreams". They show what the dark worlds truly are instead of their dreamlike fantastical variants, that Kris may fear losing themselves completely and fears losing the friendship they have with Susie now.
They also come from characters that can be connected to that theme, especially Spamton is someone defined by shattered dreams. It would even explain why the item is shown as a "crystal" and "glass", being a literal shard.
Also as a sidenote I'd love to see a video on the creepy ocean/water connections within Deltarune and Undertale, that has intrigued me since forever and perhaps the ending in the video alludes to that. Either way, keep it up, your videos always lighten up my evening!

Kris sees through their hand because... well duh.
The dark worlds don't exist, because... well, perhaps Kris is the Knight. Perhaps Mayor Holiday is the Knight, and she would have no reason to be in a world without Kris, because Dess would never have gone missing.
Susie glares coldly because Kris she never would have had that dark world adventure to bring her out of her shell.

For me, the glass in the lw is shows the person holding it what they fear, Kris fears being functionally fake and fears Susie stopping being their firend, they don't fear her going back to a bully. I guess you could also apply that to the dw and say Kris fears the fantasy ending (although maybe "sadness" works better in this context instead of fear?), but that leaves some questions for what is going on with Castle Town

The past angle is interesting, but by that logic it could also show the future instead. Dark worlds changing back into the classroom and the lab respectively, some future events we aren't aware of yet damaging Susie's opinion of Kris, and Kris' death (or
disappearance?). That makes more sense then Kris somehow not existing before to me , and also better explains why nothing happens in castle town: in the future it simply won't change much (it should show the closet if it's the past).

If we run under the logic that the glass/shadow crystal show the past, then I think that Kris being able to see through their hand in chapter 1 can be pretty simply explained. From a meta game perspective, there was no Kris before chapter 1. In fact, nothing existed before chapter 1, as anything before chapter 1 implies that it's before we (the player) started the game up! But, I'm not so sure that this is the approach that Toby would take for this game... Interesting nonetheless! :)

My theory is that the glass allows us to see the world through the eyes of us, the player. In the overworld, we don't see Kris, because they're a "puppet" of the player, thus they don't really have an identity on their own; and when looking at Susie, we get a cold glare because she doesn't know us. And in the underworld, it shows how the overworld would've been if the player hadn't interfered at all , i.e. a normal classroom and a normal computer lab; It is through our actions that we shape the events of the world, so if we never played the game in the first place, everything would be normal.
The only thing bothering me about this theory is the implications of the existance of the first savefile present when we start the game for the first time, though I'd love to hear your two cents on it.

You know the end quote got me thinking... The dark worlds were literally created hours before susie and kris go in, yet the darkners act like they've been around for years, maybe if kris was literally born like... yesterday or something, that same principle could apply to them, the residents of hometown all act like kris has been around for YEARS, yet they were literally created just yesterday.
That leads me to another thought, dark worlds are fantasy worlds created by determination, objects and dreams made reality by ones own force of will, a simulated reality so to speak, generated with backstories and characters that act like they have always been there, perhaps the same is true for the light world? Sorry for the long tangent, if you havent noticed i've uh, been watching some molly stars recently lol.

Haven't seen the entire video, or read most comments. With every explanation of what the glass shows in the different circumstances, I think it's not supposed to be some sort of "future sight" or a representation of Kris's insecurities, instead it seems like it shows... The past state of things; let me elaborate. For the worlds, it seems to show their counterpart (light world dark world), which aligns with how at first they appear (so first we have dark world > glass look into light world) until Kris seals the fountains. However, due to the interaction with the glass being focused on the characters in the light world, that kind of complicates my theory for obvious reasons, as we do not know if the glass in the light world can show its counterpart. However, how the characters look in the glass seems to support further my idea; Susie was cold and mean, but in the past, and Kris "not existing" could be a reflection of how before the whole adventure he was just that, "nobody", someone that was never seen as his brother, as a BIG SHO-
AHEM, in any case, it seems to align somehow, but it's just random thoughts, and I don't think Toby intends for the glass to function that way, unless... We were chasing someone lost in the past. CHAPTER 3 DESS CONFIRMED!1!!1!!11?!?1?'1?1?1? Well, of course not, but if my theory was correct, then it would make sense that the glass allowed in any capacity to confirm once and for all what happened to her.
And now that I finished the video, HalfBread comments the same thing as I did, yay.

They's also afraid that Susie will get mean at they again.
We will definitely have more interactions in the future that will shed light on this glass theory.

this is a really cool theory and it makes a lot of sense. like kris seeing the light world through the glass can kind of be symbolic for them being scared of it not existing, like they don’t want the adventures to end, especially since the dark worlds are what brought susie, ralsei, noelle, lancer and all of their friends together. i think susie also talks about this at the end of chapter 2, she mentions not wanting the adventures to end. (but just so you know it’s spelled “kris” not “chris” and they use they/them pronouns)

What if Gaster made up everyone's memories, what if Kris is an actual puppet made by Gaster and he just gave them life to see how it'd go if a living person with their own thoughts and feelings would react with a higher being controlling them, i feel like it does make a bit of sense due to this world being im pretty sure some sort of an experiment of Gaster's.

The "Shadow Crystal/Glass shows the past" has been my "best guess at" canon for a while now. While I disagree with most of Jaru"s theories, the idea that the Deltarune world has been in a timeloop for a very long time seems likely, though I admit that it's one of the more speculative ideas here. This gives a possibility that the SCs empowered and drove Jevil and Spamton crazy by showing them what they thought was the future but was in fact the past, thus creating a self fulfilling prophecy.

I believe it is possible that the Shadow Crystals may be INTRINSIC to their native Dark Worlds.
I believe that if you take Jevil’s Shadow Crystal and use it in the computer lab fountain, it will also say ‘But nothing happened’ even if it is your first time using it.
So if Jevil’s Shadow Crystal doesn’t work in the Cyber World, it would make sense that they would also become unusable somewhere in the process of being carried over to the Castle Town. So for us to see an actual vision there, we would have to acquire a Shadow Crystal from somewhere within the school closet fountain.
Perhaps from Ralsei if he is indeed in possession of one? And what sight might it yield to us?

  • @TheMastermind7259

What i find interesting about the dark world, then it is Ralsei. You hear from him that his dark world was made befire the classroom, but that seems to be a lie because it doesn't transform you immediately in chapter 1, it just is darkness like something in-between portals. Also what's scariest is... Dark Knight must have made Ralsei's dark world; his dark fountain is out of pure darkness, which I don't think a weak darkner could create.... Atleast without a lightner, who is a god for the darkner which he has to obey- *OH NO*!
Ok let's just continue... If dark Knight made the dark worlds, its impossible for Ralsei to make his own world... But why is it absolutely different than the unused classroom? Afterall, unused classroom was made at the same time Ralsei's world was, and given that they both have same name and can be walked through from the empty town to unused classroom, it looks like its the same world, but interestingly, they both have different dark fountains and also its mentioned by Lancer when he appeared out of nowhere in the empty town. Whats also important to note is that Ralsei lies to us: he mentions in the legend that, his dark world is there for an entire eternity and another one just appeared too.... Which is suspicious lie like i said before: Ralsei's world was made at same exact time when the unused classroom was here.
    Two options:
    Is Ralsei.... the roaring Knight?
We all have heard this theory. But there is something more important: Ralsei is according to himself abandomed for eternity, just waiting for lightners, and he was forgotten many times during chapter 2: when queen forgot cage, in front of the mansion. During the final queen mech boss fight she forgot Ralsei's name. In pretty sure queen didn't even ask for his name afterall .... This means that Ralsei is forgettable, and the reason for him to be the roaring knight is looking for attention. We also see him in every dark world, including Spamton sweepstakes web site without turning into statue. And he is also pretending to be hero from the legend. So... being a villain for attention and attending fight agaisnt villain is straight up the point. He even looks like Ferryman of the river of the land of dead, and is luring us into dark worlds by telling us to go to the library and doing group project. And if he is evil, then he will do roaring and leave us in eternal darkness.
    But what if...
    Is Ralsei obeying the knight?
This is pretty much not confirmed yet, less proof... What are your thoughts on these two theories? I will leave the "Is Ralsei a puppet" on you.

50 minutes ago?! Wowie! Is Susie glaring coldly mean she’s dead? Like they’re showing a timeline where everything has been fucked up, like the one ending we’re allowed to have?

Ocelot's link to channel doesn't work.
I mean, good video but I want to know who will cause my nightmares tonight because of this intro.
Edit: I found out that you can go to his video from the pop up (I don't how this pop up called in english but my language creators use word "tip"). So you can still find him but I still want link to be fixed.

    I have a theory
    This might show that
The glass but without the kris
Like, when you use the glass right, u see urself... transparent... a Ghost
Ghost are mostly like dead peoples
And Susie, might be the same bully like was before, if she didnt meet Kris and made friends
Maybe it shows... What would peoples look, without *Kris* .

I feel like I'm definitely late on commenting here, but ...
I feel like the interpretation that makes the most sense is that the shadow crystal doesn't change between the light and dark worlds. The shadow crystal shows what would exist if the dark world was not there.
Without the dark world, Susie would remain suspicious and untrusting of Kris, and, well...
If the dark world never existed, with no shadows ever cutting deeper, then there would be no connection to allow us as players to guide Kris' actions, and they wouldn't be in the state they are as we guide them. (ie. Kris wouldn't be in their school looking at their hands hours after the school was closed, etc)

Hey HBC, I have a video suggestion that would make quite a discussion:
    Is susie homeless?
I saw it in a Reddit post and people were actually discussing it on the comments (and someone even mentioned your video of the four shadows).
Seeing a video about Susie's home might not be so interesting, but it's just a suggestion so don't do it if you don't want to.

Hello! (this is kinda long you've been warned)
Going out on a limb here... When we look through the crystal in the dark world, it shows us the light world version of whatever we are looking at. So, By looking through the crystal we are essentially looking through a window to a different plane of existence. Well, less of a window and more of a broken glass shard of a window into a different plane of existence.
So! If that is the case, what if we assume it has the same function in the light world? Whatever we look at through the glass, we can see it's alternate version in a different plane through that glass. We can easily recognize that, when we look through the crystal in the dark world, we can see into the light wold plane. But the reason we can't recognize the descriptions of what we see through the glass in the light world is because we do not know the plane that the glass shows us in the light world. It is something we have yet to experience, so we don't recognize which plane we are looking at.
If I could offer up a theory on what exact plane we are getting glimpses of in the light world... I think it might be different save files!
It is my belief that, in deltarune, the three saves are three alternate universes. I believe this because there are three alternate versions of the content in Asriel's drawer, and the version you see depends on which of the three save files you use.
But even if you disregard that belief, the idea that the glass shows us an alternate version of reality is compelling, because we already have a hint to what this alternate version of reality may be. A Weird (Snowgrave) Route!
This route is clearly an alternate version of reality. And thanks to the three save files, this alternate reality can exist at the same time as a normal route. So, if the crystal allows us to see things we look at through it as their light world versions, I don't think it's too much of a stretch to say that looking through the glass could allow us to see what we view through it as their Weird Route versions! Especially if this item's true purpose is to allow us to look through the layers of alternate realities!
    What implications does this have?
Well, if looking at Susie shows her glaring coldly at us, then according to this theory that would mean that in the weird route version of reality Susie is not a fan of Kris at all. She is closed off from them and holds contempt for Kris in that version. I think that checks out if this is a glimpse into the reality were Kris (but really the player) forced Noelle to Snowgrave Berdly.
Now, Kris looking through his hand is a bit harder to rationalize. What in a snowgrave route could lead to Kris' hand becoming transparent? Unfortunately, any answers to that will be nothing but pure speculation until more chapters come out. So, please excuse me as I speculate a little!
    - Maybe something happens where Kris slowly fades away as the player usurped more and more control?
    - Perhaps Kris dies or gets discarded as the player grows strong enough to not need them as a vessel, so the reason they don't see their body in the weird route reality is because their body no longer exists in that reality?
    - It might be (and this is a *_wild_* leap) that in the weird route, Kris will go through something similar to what Gaster went through, leading to them having holes in their hands??????
Only time will tell! But yeah, my personal theory about the crystal/glass is that it is showing us a glimpse into an alternate reality, the weird route to be specific! And you know what would absolutely convince me of this theory?
If at some point you can look at the contents of Asriel's drawer through the glass, and it lets us see what is in there on a different save! Like, if in the save we are on the drawer has a cross country shirt with a tear in it, but when we look through the glass we see instead an old school ID with an embarrassing haircut. If that ever happens, I am putting this theory down as confirmed!

A little late to the party but: What if the shadow crystal shows the light of the world, while the glass shows the dark in the person being viewed? The corrupted aspect in the lighteners. If Light and Dark are akin to Humans and monsters, then all lighteners should have a small bit of dark in them, and vice versa.

    Could always be Gaster!
Gaster has a hole in his hands.
And Susie would likely be glaring at Gaster in the future assuming they're connected to the knight or Kris being possessed by us, and she finds out.

if we go with this theory and what that means about kris seeing through their own hand, i have a potential theory. maybe kris doesn't truly "exist" until us, the player, plays the game. and that sounds weird considering they have a history with a lot of the characters here. everyone knows them and they have a family and everything. BUT, this is also true with dark worlds. Specifically the library dark world, it only exists for like a day, but it has years and years of deep history around it despite it only just recently coming to existence. my proposal is that maybe kris works like a dark world? i feel like it could explain why their side of the room is so barren besides showing the fact theyre not as successful as asriel. they dont have their own things, the red horn headband toriel said they had has disappeared somewhere, or maybe it never existed at all? idk how much I actually believe this theory but it came to mind while watching and I thought I should at least share it.

Just a cool thought I had, but what if these singular Shadow Crystals only let you see a glimpse into the past, and perhaps when enough are collected, you'll be able to form some 'Shadow Mirror' that'll allow you to do something cool, like maybe fully see into the past to finally find out who the Knight really is? Or maybe Ralsei's origins and how he knows so much about the Dark Worlds and the Roaring?

I think that A: It is talking about the player, we have only “existed” for one day, as far as we know. And B: in chapter one, we fall into castle town after the mysterious place in the closet, and since it seems to allow things from other dark worlds to exist fine, like Ralsei can in other dark worlds, maybe it was there before we were? Like ralsei seems to have been?

I think it was a "mime" joke. Susie noticed that we could see her through the glass. And then, when Kris took it away, Susie changed her face to the opposite.
