Wow Amanda! This was a really great tutorial. I am amazed that we can grow these gorgeous flowers in Texas! I'm definitely going to try and looking forward to the fall seeding blogs. Thanks!
Good morning , it had been 2 years for me growing lisianthus, the first year was successful. This year they have all germinated, that is good, just have to wait and see now. I am a zone 4, and we are currently very cold. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
We have the same set up, the dining room. I grow in my backyard and have to share space with the veggies and BBQ area. I'm in NW Oregon zone 8, I will have to try fall planting lisi's. It's too late for this year. This is the first time I'm trying them. I use a cement mixing tub, abt. $8 at Home Depot or Lowes, does a great job of holding in the mess. I have a mat like yours too. I'm so glad I found you. It's nice to see someone who is real and in the same zone, different climate, I adapt.
My first time with lisianthus. I live in a hot and humid place so I decided to starting it in September. I set up a mini green house using cupcake trays outside and it worked!! They are so tiny but I’m super happy to see them 😊
Sending love and prayers to Buffy ❤ beautiful flowers really wished you lived closer so we could garden together and I could let you grow for me lol, as I am not great at starting seeds!
Hi Amanda, I found some 6 pks of Lisianthus this spring and planted them right away. It's been 5 wks in the ground but they really haven't grown much at all. I had heard they were slow to germinate but didn't realize the entire growing process was so slow, Thanks for this informative video, you are a good teacher.
Eeeeeeeekkkkkkk..... I'm so excited for this video. Commenting before watching this! I so so wanted to learn this from you in particular ❤❤❤❤ thank you
Hi Amanda! Thanks for a fabulous video. I am also in Texas, but in Houston Zone 9b. I keep my house at 74F during the day and 72F overnight. Currently trying to identify the coolest area of my home to germinate my lisianthus in. Do you think that will work to germinate and then subsequently grow them indoors for ~12 weeks? If not, I can drop my AC further but these hot summers are a huge energy bill suck! Thank you for your thoughts.
How about starting a few of your seeds to see if they will germinate under those conditions? And if they do, then you can start the rest. If they don’t, then you can drop your AC for the rest of them.
❤ another great information video. Thank you!!! I can’t wait to try your method of growing Lisianthus. I grew mine (first time ever growing Lisianthus from seed) in soil blocks this past year and although I had fantastic results…the soil blocks were yucky from algae by the time they were ready to pot up. I didn’t want to touch them & I’m a gardener who loves having their hands in dirt. lol
Thank you, I was thinking I could plant in late summer then overwinter, I’m in a hot climate as you are. I have the winter seeding on heat mats going on at the moment, here in Australia, but next year I’ll try your plan.
First I have to say I love your shirt!! I am so happy for this video. Great details in your instructions. I have my seeds but don’t think they are pelleted so I’m hoping there isn’t a special way they need to touch the soil. I will be starting mine this weekend waiting for a plant stand to arrive that I ordered just for them. 👏👏I’m so excited to be growing with you. ❤
Good morning. I have seen garden answer use these types of starters multiple times. She seems to be able to up seed her plants and then reuse the starters again. So I think you will be able to use it lots of times. If I had the space I would do the lisianthus for growing. Enjoy your time in Alaska.
Thanks for this very informative video 👍this is my first year at seed sowing and like you I just love to arrange the flowers and give to friends and family. You have given me the confidence to give these difficult seeds a try. Just ordered the pellets on line. Not sure how your method will work in N W England but I’m going to give it a try. Looking forward to your update videos 😍. As this has been my first year at seed sowing I must agree that some of the seed sowing sets are very flimsy and split apart when you come to get the seedlings out🙁 I will make sure that my future purchases are more robust 🌺🌸
Hi Amanda, I noticed last year you started your lizzie's in August - or at least that was the date of the video. i'm curious, why'd you start earlier? i'm zone 9 a; reached out to John's Plant Adventures in phoenix; and he stafts early August; wondering the best time for my environment West TX! Thanks 😊
I want them to be larger before planting them out … last year I lost about 30% when I moved them outside, so I’m hoping for bigger more robust root systems by starting earlier.
I’m gonna give this planting a try… seeds are expensive but better than a potted plant. Need to find the best 2 types to try (matching my Texas native garden) perhaps the Echo White & another. 😊
Thanks for a great video! This is my third year growing Lisi's and I hope to be selling them to florist this year. What a great idea to start them in the summer and plant them in our hot fall. Have you had any problems with fungus gnats?
I found this video to be very informative and helpful! Thank you! I have tried growing lisianthus from seed for the past two years now. The first year was a bust, the second year much better but I still have lots to learn. Question: I've heard that in the seedling stage, lisianthus can't handle temps above 80° F or they will start to rosette. At what point are they able to handle heat 80 or above? I start the seed in my house under grow lights, but after they are up and growing I would love to move them to my small backyard greenhouse. Will they get too warm in there??
I don’t stress about the rosette because I am not looking for bloom right away and instead will have blooms in a year. However, I don’t typically plant mine out until the end of September and while the temps will still be high, they will cool off each evening.
I’m growing in the UK and manage to get germination but they grow so slow. They were sown 6 months ago and still too small to plant out. Are they suitable for overwintering in a heated greenhouse ? Great video
Hi there! Are you fertilizing them? Do they get at least 14 hours under grow lights each day? Mine overwinter outside in freezing temps, but I do cover them when it gets anywhere close to 25 degrees. I would think a greenhouse would be fine unless your temps get super cold.
Thanks for sharing this. I tried this year to grow some and failed. I knew they were tricky so I'm gonna try again. I did buy some black and orange pansie for fall and need to start those'd next week. Have you started those before and a good trick?
Great video. I attempted one tray; it was too hot, and none germinated. I am in the Phoenix area, and this gives me hope. I followed your directions and was able to get about 90% germination. Now I want more. Do you look for any other signs other than a 3-4 month period to transplant them? Do you think they will survive if I plant them in December (plugs I have already ordered)? I was having difficulty figuring out which group to order, but it sounds that they will grow regardless of the group in the hot climate.
I typically transplant at the beginning of October. If I were you, I would start the seeds in December and plant them out next spring … towards the end of March.
When do you start fertilizing the seedlings? At germination or after first true leaves? Would the same answer apply to most other flower seeds or just Lisianthus since they grow so slow? Thanks so much!!!
Hmm. I know I’m weird but we keep the air conditioning set on 77. And I usually start seeds in my house. So do you think they won’t come up because it’s too warm?
Bootstrap farmer trays will last forever. Very strong. I use generic 6 or 4 pack cells, off Amazon, quite cheap but last 4 or 5 seasons. It's the 10/20 flat that needs to be the best quality. No problem carrying them around one handed. Hex trays IMHO are trash.
Yes they contacted me about showing their product. I don’t do sponsorships like that, but I wouldn’t mind buying some myself to try if you think it’s worth it!
Wow Amanda! This was a really great tutorial. I am amazed that we can grow these gorgeous flowers in Texas! I'm definitely going to try and looking forward to the fall seeding blogs. Thanks!
You are so welcome!

It sounds like you’re off to a great start for another successful year of Lisianthus!
I agree. Lisianthus are absolutely beautiful. I’m amazed on how much time goes into producing the beautiful plants from start to the finished product.
I totally agree!

Buffy I hope you are feeling better❤. Love all the lisianthus varieties that you planted. They are going to be gorgeous.
Thanks so much!

That is awesome!
Oh my goodness those Lisianthus are absolutely gorgeous. 💜. Give Buffy a cuddle from me. 💖
Will do!
I wish I had a whole field of Lisianthus! Buffy is so cute! Lots of prayers for her. ❤
SAME!!! I love these blooms so much!
Probably your best video yet! So much info, presented in an easy to understand manner. Brava!
Wow, thank you!
Great video! You need to write a book! You're such a great teacher!
Wow, thank you!
Sending love and prayers to Buffy ❤ beautiful flowers really wished you lived closer so we could garden together and I could let you grow for me lol, as I am not great at starting seeds!
Same❤️
This video is FANTASTIC!!! Thank you!

They are slow growing as well as slow germination!
Eeeeeeeekkkkkkk..... I'm so excited for this video. Commenting before watching this! I so so wanted to learn this from you in particular ❤❤❤❤ thank you
You are so welcome!
I'm excited about these flowers. Going to my garden center again to see if they still have them BOGO!
Awesome!
❤ beautiful flowers! Never knew about them before.
Thanks! They are lovely blooms!
Yaayyy!!! This is what I was waiting for! Great video! I will start them this weekend 🎉 Thank You for the detailed information
You are so welcome!
Wonderful information. Hope your vacation was all you hoped it would be!
Yes! Thank you!
I will be trying these for the first time. Love all the info
Glad you like them!

Wonderful! I used to do soil blocks as well but it hurts my hands to use it!
Hi Amanda.I love today's video also 😊😊😊😊
Yay! Thank you!

No special way if they aren’t pelleted … they will just be super tiny and look like specs of dirt!
@@shesamadgardener oh boy that’s going to be a challenge. ☺️Thank you for letting me know as I have not yet opened them.
Definitely saving this video. Thank you!!
Glad it was helpful!
❤❤❤❤❤❤i might try to grow the deep rose and voyage champagne
I can’t wait to see them in person!

Hi there! Definitely find a product that works for you!!!
I sow seeds in the foam tray
Good idea!

I suggest voyage … I’ve had a lot of luck with the Voyage series.
Thanks for a great video! This is my third year growing Lisi's and I hope to be selling them to florist this year. What a great idea to start them in the summer and plant them in our hot fall.
Have you had any problems with fungus gnats?
Yes but I use sticky traps which helps keep them under control.
Can we grow asters in 8a zone from seeds? Can you post a video on it please 🙏
Yep! I haven’t grown them in a few years but I can look into it for next year.
I found this video to be very informative and helpful! Thank you! I have tried growing lisianthus from seed for the past two years now. The first year was a bust, the second year much better but I still have lots to learn.

Hope you get the right seeds from Eden brothers. I did not.
Did you say if you cover during those few cold nights you get during the winter?
I cover them if my temps get below about 28 degrees.
I’m growing in the UK and manage to get germination but they grow so slow. They were sown 6 months ago and still too small to plant out. Are they suitable for overwintering in a heated greenhouse ? Great video

If you aren’t getting to crazy low temps, they should be fine to transplant in December … just be sure to cover them if it gets below freezing!
Im here in Dallas, can I start with my seed on September? When you transplant outside?
I typically transplant at the beginning of October. If I were you, I would start the seeds in December and plant them out next spring … towards the end of March.
😊
🌻🌻🌻
When do you start fertilizing the seedlings? At germination or after first true leaves? Would the same answer apply to most other flower seeds or just Lisianthus since they grow so slow? Thanks so much!!!
I usually start when I see the second set of true leaves.
@@shesamadgardener Perfect ; thanks! I need to wait and be patient. 😊
I am in Phoenix. Would it be ok to start seeds now?
Yep!
✌✌👍👍❣❣

Lights. Do you go full brightness from seed till they go outside? My grow light can change its brightness and I’m not sure how bright it should be.
Mine don’t have setting but I would go full on.
Hmm. I know I’m weird but we keep the air conditioning set on 77. And I usually start seeds in my house. So do you think they won’t come up because it’s too warm?
It most probably will work but might take longer for yours to germinate.

Those flowers are beautiful. I would not seed them, I would just buy them.
They are expensive stems in florist world!
