I moved from New Hampshire 3 years ago not knowing anything whatsoever about gardening in Texas. Amanda, you are a godsend and my number one favorite RUclipsr. I live in zone 8b and have been following you for about a year and have especially been enjoying your seed starting series. Thank you so much for all you do, I've learned a ton from you!
Pelargoniums are my most loved flowers! I grew so many from seed this time last year and had a lot of success. I have grown every type of colours but my favourites are the coral and salmon ones. They do take time to germinate and then even longer to grow as a seedling to maturity but SO worth it! Be careful not to overwater them, especially as young seedlings-they usually like their soil to dry out between waterings. They also thrive when being fertilized regularly. I love when they start blooming in early Spring as it allows me to enjoy their beauty indoors when it is still too cold to grow them outdoors (I’m in Toronto, zone 6b). I never have to deal with pests on them either as they seem to have natural pest-repelling properties! What’s more, after summer ends, they can be overwintered indoors and they’ll continue to bloom for you as long as they receive enough light. They also benefit from a cut back once a year so they don’t get sparse/leggy. They can live easily 3-5 years, so you can replant them year after year and save money that way! I plan on growing a few more this month from seed because I enjoy the process a lot. I am so excited for you, Amanda! I look forward to your seedling update videos😊 Best of luck!
I live in New Hampshire and my average last frost date is around mid May. I usually start my geraniums from seed in late November in order to get sizeable plants that are blooming by my last frost date. 😊🌸
Thanks for sharing your experience, sounds like I might be a little late! Hopefully 16 hours of light per day and consistent fertilizing can speed them along a little bit.

One more comment..I had great success with Swallowtail geraniums from seeds. Made me feel so accomplished in my zone 10b/sunset zone 22 garden. Wishing you all the best too!
I have been busy making cards and doing holiday projects so haven't watched many videos about gardening. I am so happy to start watching your videos again- especially happy to watch the seed starting. I will be starting my geraniums in the next few weeks. I grew the Maverick Series last year (mixed variety) and I had six different colors and they were amazing -- trying to keep some over the winter in my basement.
I have 29 seed packets coming from MIgardener ! I can't wait to plant them! I Love your videos! Happy to know I'm NOT the only one who doesn't wash their pots! I also have those containers. I love them! You taught me well!
I have grown Maverick geraniums for the last three years. I’ve grown multiple colors of them and have found the violet and the salmon and the orange the most hardy. In SC 8B, they love, love the heat and don’t mind cool weather either. Honestly you will get tired of them before they get tired of you. Maverick is a beast 😊
I’ve decided to grow some geraniums thanks to this video! I tried last year. They germinated but I think I started too late in the season. I wasn’t going to try again because of it but now I am, thanks to your instructions. I’m going to keep watch for your updates to see how close I am to your success. Wish me luck!😊 What other seeds do you like to start this early and have had success with? I might try another kind of seed, as well. Thanks for this video! Have a Merry and blessed Christmas, Amanda! 🤗🤗🎄🎅❄️❤️✝️
Glad I found you, I have geranium seeds from swallowtail as well, so this was just in time…I will do a grow along, your tips got me excited….I’m zone 6 Illinois.😊
I love starting geraniums from seed! I also bring mine in from outside in the late fall before frost. Sometimes I trim them back, shake off all the dirt and put them in a brown paper bag to store. In spring I get them out, pot up and put under grow light for a week or so til it’s time to move them outside. They do great. This year I put them in small clay pots trimmed back in my kitchen window.
I started geraniums from seed last year for the first time. While they are slow growers, I found them super easy and so much fun to grow! I will definitely grow more this year.
Geraniums are one of my favorite flowers, they are easy, flower a lot and have a long season. I usually bring a few of mine inside to overwinter, store a few large ones in garage. My new favs are ivy geraniums! They are so beautiful and really like the sun.
Excited for you and your geraniums! I have Maverick White I’m going to start ASAP. I didn’t know their true leaves would look like the actual leaves and the seedlings have a fragrance too. How fun! Looking forward to the update on these beauties.
I started my own geraniums last year. So easy!! I gave a bunch as gifts (perfect for Mother's Day) and now I have some large ones overwintering in my grow room (I live in Iowa). I'll never need to buy them again!
🥰 those little baby cacti are so cute 😍. I just got my garden stalk today that ordered on Black Friday. It is the inventors bundle that comes with all the bells and whistles at an amazing price. My early Christmas present. I know I want to grow strawberries but not sure what else I’ll put in it. Maybe some herbs at the top. ❤
I grow geranium last spring.very easy and I'm hooked.i ordered more from swallow tail.spent $250 for seeds.also I dug some of them to overwintered. I have the multibloom .beautiful.. I actually sold soem because I have soo many.😂
@shesamadgardener your sooo right..the one I'm overwintering in my unheated greenhouse is blooming.makes me smile especially we have snow here in Ontario canada..
Amanda I started some geraniums in January last year but you are correct they should have been started earlier. I did not find them difficult but just that they took time. 😊
Excellent tutorial! I have 60 Geranium seeds that I will be starting in early January. Will be my first time sowing seeds. Question: do you remove any excess water from the bottom tray after the soil has become moist?
I love the seed starting videos. I am one who converted to the dry method with BM7 (got 4 bags from HG yesterday). Question: At what point do you give up on a seed that hasn’t germinated? I have some new seeds I want to start that have large germination window. Some are a month or more for germination.
It’s really just depends on the expected germination time … I typically give a week past for the shorter germination times and a couple of weeks for the longer germination times.
I know you've grown petunias and I really like your plan of getting your plants to garden center sizes by planting time. I plan to grow petunias from seed and wondered what amount of time I should give them. I'm zone 7b so I'm thinking I could get them out mid to late April. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Love your channel! You are such a wealth of information and I’ve learned so much watching your videos. I’m new to gardening and this is my first year seed starting. Question: I started my bullseye salmon geraniums from seed last week. All of my cells germinated and but I noticed the leaves look a little yellow/pale. And some of the leaves are curling/cupping. Any idea what causes that?
Check to make sure they are’t sitting in water or vise versa where they are too dry. Also make sure they are getting at least 14 hours of light per day. And if all of those seem good, then consider going ahead and lightly fertilizing them.
@shesamadgardener thanks Amanda , I appreciate your reply! I'll make sure my watering is squared away. I've only watered once since I planted so I don't think it's over watering. It's hard to tell if the soil is moist because of my layer of vermiculite on top. I'll water and see if that helps the leaves. You mentioned in a prior video you might be trying a different seedling fertilizer that doesn't smell so stinky (after you finish your huge bottle of fish emulsion). Do you know of one isn't so smelly?
One question have you ever started hardy geraniums or baptisia, I’m going to try this year and could use some good advice on when and how to best start them :)
Unfortunately, I dont like the geranium smell. But with Amandas seed starting steps you are sure to have great success. 👍 Shes always very thorough. Not sure if I spelled that right.
@@shesamadgardener Thank you yesterday I didn't find them but I just saw them on your Amazon Storefront. I started the geraniums seeds in Jan but this year I will began Dec 1 because they took too long to germinate. In the fall I put the geraniums in paper bags I hope they survive so I can have them again this summer!
I have heard not to use Fish Emulsion in the house, because it smells so bad. What is your experience with this? I know that you use it on your seedlings.

My Maverick salmon and apple blossom that I grew from seed are still flowering and I’m in North Texas. ❤ them!
OMG! That makes me so excited!
@ by the way the mavericks were in a container in full sun during the summer and they did fine 🤷♀️

I've been thinking do I go ahead and start some seeds or wait... You are starting so I guess I will go ahead and get started too :D
It’s the perfect time to start! 😊
You’re a wonderful teacher. Planning to grow the salmon geraniums.
Geranium 'Vancouver Centennial” is striking. Easily propagate by cuttings.
I’m going to have to try that variety!
