Toronto Physiotherapist James Braithwaite talks about isometric, eccentric and concentric contractions and how their use is considered in a resistance training program. How are these types of contractions targeted for rehabilitation or athletic training goals?
Best explanation I've found on RUclips so far, thanks dude.
Yeah, way more lucid than the technical jargon I found otherwise.
I agree

Physio therapists are gold. Thank you for choosing and being a phyiotherapist despite the salary. You guys are key to healing more than people realize.
Hey! Always a pleasure to help! If I can add value I will! Thanks for your comment! -James
one of the most underrated videos that i ever watched. it includes the most valueble knowdledge of the body building . people only concentrate on doing concentric portion of the exercises. whereas, as you said , eccentric portion is the most stressful part which means that produces the best anabolic reponse for muscle growth (hypertrophy)
emre uludogan Thanks so much for the comment Emre! -James
I thought eccentric produces high force with low muscle exertion- nut you said it is the most stressful.
explain please, thank you
Thank you for posting. I'm currently studying for my CPT exam and just needed a visual representation.
Most comprehesive yet uncomplicated explanation so far. Thanks a million
Most simple explanation I've found on YT. Thank you!
Thanks mate from the UK as this will come in handy for revision for my Anatomy & Physiology Exam tomorrow!!!
My yoga TTC teacher couldn't explain the 3 types of contractions. Thanks god I found this! Getting into/out of a pose is concentric or eccentric contraction, and holding a pose is isometric contraction!
Very helpful and straight to the point without going into too much detail and confusing me, thank you.
Glad you like Samantha! -James
Very useful video. Understand why my trainer always told me to slow down when I was doing what I thought was the 'easy' part of an exercise....the downward element of a push up for instance. Makes sense now. Thanks
Thank you! This really helped me because I didn’t understand the difference between isometric and concentric contractions before. Needed to know this for my test tomorrow
This information is GOLD. Thank you SO MUCH
really huge amount of knowledge is imparted through this video
Very clear explanation. Preparing my PT Exams and this video helps me to understand the difference. Thanks.
Very concise explanation thanks!
Thank you for this! I started a strength Training video and the trainer mentioned that many of the moves were eccentric. I had never heard that term before. Anyways this short 30 minute strength training has given me great results in a short amount of time and i believe it's because these eccentric movements. Thank you!
best explanation! I am studying for my AFAA certification and could not understand this concept based on the book text, but I understood it instantly when you explained it. Thank you!

Thank you! Finally I understood it an easy way👍🏻
as a medical student (ok im 1st year...) but this made understanding of muscles 1. interesting 2. beneficial to my patients (i hope) thank you so much!!
Glad you liked! -James
Beautiful explanation! It's a great thing to start with isometric movements for beginners and rehabilitated clients.
Thanks Heather! Glad you liked the video. Totally agree, I like starting with isometrics early in rehab, and also Isometrics can be ramped up as well, not necessarily just a remedial exercise at all! -James
Thank you for explaining and demonstrating the contraction types. This is so helpful! Great explanation.
Very helpful with explaining the three muscle contractions
Thanks! Really help me with my online class since there is lack of demonstration between the differences
Thank you for clearing that up.
Still finding it quite useful in 2015! Thanks!

Loved this explanation ❤️
wonderfully explained
Excellent and easy explanation. Thank you!
Another way to define the three types of contractions:
Concentric: Defeat gravity.
Eccentric: Reduce gravity.
Isometric: Neutralize gravity.
So, it doesn't mater if you are seating, standing, or laying down, gravity always pulls the weight down. The name of your contraction depends on where the weight goes compared against the direction of the gravitational pull.
Piesho Nais this is actually really helpful
Thank you!!!!! Awesome explanation! 👊
Thanks for the explanation.
Thanks brother finally I understand concentric and eccentric contraction 😀😀
Extremely clear and concise! Thank you brotha!

Perfectly explained.
Fantastic explanation 👍👌
awesome video man!
Great tips and advice 👍
Isometric contraction is the most soliciting contraction in terms on intensity (the downside is that it doesn,t activate all of the fibers of the muscle, -unlike eccentric or concentric which u use for the entire range of the joint)
clearest video on web
Super helpful - thank you so much for your explanation!

Well explained thanks

how would the lowering during a squat be the most stressful if the descent is aided by gravity? wouldn't it be more stressful standing up?
Hi! It's the fact that your muscles have to control the descent, they are working to slow you against gravity and that is what is stressful.
Great teaching style, wonderful video
I understand that you have to control the movement on descent (eccentric). However, wouldn’t you have to produce more force during ascent (concentric) (also working against gravity)?
@@cascadia13 It is probably because your muscles are not in the strongest position in eccentric motion. Also, they are controlling the force, not mindlessly pushing the thing.
Thanks for the info , helped me a lot.
