Being a Cards fan, anytime I see this topic, it makes me think of Bo Hart and Rick Ankiel's rookie campaigns. Both became instant fan favorites. For Ankiel his career was one of redemption. Bo Hart unfortunately only played 88 total games in the majors before retiring.

But his batting average is above league average, he's got power, and some speed, and his defense is above average. If he could just turn some of those strikeouts into walks, he'd get a lot more attention.

I was a scout for the Chicago cubs for 12 years - what people don’t know about prospects is that the success of the players drafted after the 1st and 2nd round is asked on how the club develops players of their personality and their skill set - most of the drafted players are not good enough to succeed on talent alone - their success will come down to how they develop in the club how hard they work and how well they take to the clubs specific development structure - for example a player taken by the twins might turn out to be a disappointment and regress never playing in the show - but that same player in an alternate universe might have been drafted to the Mets instead and with the same skill set talent and progression would have gone on to have a great career in the MLB . If the development system and the player mesh well and the results are vastly different . So if your a rookie and you had the raw skills to make and impact in the MLB but regressed soon after that means you have the base to become a good player and a lot of the time a trade could make a huge difference in that trajectory .
I just wanted to mention that because the spotlight usually is on the first round and those players are different - a lot of importance is put on making sure they integrate in the community correctly and don’t get into trouble of stain their reputation because when your 17 years old and you become rich and famous overnight that leads to problems and the club is tasked with the responsibility of protecting their investment . Babe all is a game that happens on the field but playing in the MLB is a life style choice and since off field situations can be proportional to a players success in the field this needs to be managed correctly also - so there are different paths inside the club for different levels of drafted players but a players future is 40 percent babied on what happens after the draft
Also if a player has. Great rookie season then regresses over night then they still have the skill set and ability they demonstrated - and this can often be the result if external or interpersonal variables
But what you need to understand is there are so many talented driven players fighting for a spot within the club that unless a prospect represents significant investment (those are the players the public knows about before they they hit the show ) if a prospect stumbles or regresses it can be difficult to recover because the margin is so narrow within the club prospect pool that there are driven passionate talented players right behind and want the chance that a prospects stumble just created

Nope. Check out his 1979 season, statistically better than his rookie season in practically every category, just didn't get the awards (MVP and obviously ROY) like in his rookie season. The only stats i see that were better in his rookie season were doubles (47 vs 41) and triples (7 vs 1), everything else, HR (39 - almost twice as his rookie season total of 21), hits, runs, RBI, total bases, walks, strikeouts, avg/obp/slg/ops, ops+, all better than his rookie year. And he still won gold glove and was an all star in 79.
