There are a few moments in the video where I mistakenly refer to Wang as "Thai," not "Taiwanese." I absentmindedly didnt make the distinction between Thailand and Taiwan, and sincerely apologize to anyone who might have been put off by that mistake. Hope you guys enjoy the video.
The fact that you acknowledge your mistakes in comments like these is what separates you from some other content creators. We appreciate it. This is why I stand by my comment on the warehouse clip on IG of you being that dude and always having been.
As a Taiwanese who experienced the era of Wang. I can tell you that Wang is truly a legend in Taiwan. Some fun facts abt how do we Taiwanese love him: 1. A lot of Taiwanese stayed up just to see his live games. (I was in my 8th and 9th grade, and yes, I stayed up to see his games, too.) 2. If he got a won, next day he'd get the whole front page on our local newspaper just to celebrate. 3. Even some local venders of breakfast restaurants (most of them didn't even see many ball games before Wang's era) knew the whole Yankee lineup at the time. 4. He is a coach in one of our pro league team now, and he is also the bullpen coach in our national team this year. Fans who go to stadium to watch the games ask him for a autograph more then players.
Great video! Wang made his way back to the majors by pitching 6 scoreless innings against the Japanese all-star team in the 2013 world baseball classics. That game was as memorable as his back-to-back 19-win seasons.
Speaking of Asian born players, Chan Ho Park was one of first South Korean players in the MLB. He was good with the Dodgers before falling to shit in Texas. You should do a video on him.
Vlad hit two grand slams off of him in a single inning I think. Loved him at Hanwha at his retirement season, where nearly every hitter would take the time to take off their helmets and bow before standing in the box to pay respects for a retiring korean legend. As a South Korean baseball announcer, he talks so fucking much about his time in LA its actually incredibly humanizing. His caster partner cant even get a word in about the game saving double play because Park is too busy talking about his problems developing pitcher catcher relationships in Los Angeles stemming from a curve ball in the dirt that got past the catcher 2 innings ago. Really funny guy, became a legendary meme in the KBO.
He injured his foot running the bases in a game against a national league team where no DH's were used -- and he was never the same - he had many many injuries
Wasn’t that game in Houston too, before they left the NL? They’ve been screwing the Yankees since 2008, apparently 😂 Edit: I just remembered the Astros no-hit the Yankees in 2003, I believe. So it’s been happening for 20 years.
I remember when you had like 4k subs JollyOlive, you're getting bigger, keep it up. Bet you hit 100k by the end of the year if you keep it up. Bet you hit 500k in 4 years or sooner provided you get that lucky viral video. Really at this point that's all your channel needs. Quality's good, regular uploads, a reasonable amount of ad time, staying apolitical and avoiding polarizing topics, all you need at this point is that little bit of luck and for that right person to see a video to start it to go viral.
Great video Jolly Olive! If we’re talking about Asian players, can you please do Ichiro? I’m a die hard Mariners fan and was 8 years old during his rookie season. So I had him for my entire childhood before he went to the Yankees. I was fortunate enough to go to all 3 games for his Mariners hall of fame induction. I definitely shed a tear during his speech and highlight reel as well haha. Ichiro means so much to the city of Seattle and more than likely would have had over 4,000 hits if he came to the MLB at 21 instead of 27
I love stories about the sinker. I like showing them to Jays fans..as this is their game plan. The blue Jays have spent the last 2 years hoarding GB pitchers (gausman, bassitt, pop, kikuchi, white, swanson). I noticed that they intended to get more groundballs but I should have seen the dimension changes coming as well. Kirk and Vladdy faced nothing but sinking pitches in the second half and it crippled them (Vlad with just too many GBs and DPs).. it's a good approach...it clearly works
As a Mets fan, Wang’s back-to-back 19-win seasons are always at the back of my mind and I don’t know why. After this video, I think it might be that 10-strikeout performance. Great video!
Jolly, he is not Thai. He is Taiwanese. I told my students in Thailand that there had never been an mlb player from there before. But I was wrong. Johnny Damon is the lone representative of Thailand in MLB history.
9:20 Holy crap, I was at that game. My dad actually rage quit, so we left after the runs in the brutal sixth inning, which is apparently when it happened. I don’t recall that moment (I was three days removed from being ten), but a shame that happened to him then.
Loved him. Quality starter, inning eater and ass you mentioned a great fielder. Wasn’t the flashiest pitcher but certainly a good starter for a period.
That foot injury was just depressing. Foot just explodes doing something routine as running the bases and completely derails his career. He was a such a stud too.
Wang was so good, especially those two seasons before he was hurt running the bases versus Houston. Would love seeing a video about Scott Proctor’s 2006 season. Unsung hero of that team. Key figure in the 5 game sweep of Boston that sent NY to the postseason. Edit: I think you’re putting too much emphasis on Wang’s win totals. What gets lost 15 years later is the context. He was an incredibly aggressive pitcher and it had a tangible effect on the game. He would pound the zone with strikes, keeping the hitters on the defensive and keeping his defense engaged in the game. He was going deep into games with low pitch counts at a time when only the best of the best were pitching into the 8th and 9th innings. He was a day off for the majority of the bullpen every 5 games. It doesn’t show up in the box score, but he made the whole staff better because of it, and I think it’s fair to say that he won them games on days he wasn’t even pitching because of it.
Great video 10/10....as a nats fan I would like an Adam Dunn video or Mark Reynolds, not the greatest hitters, but they are my favorite players, dont know why, maybe cuz they either homer or strikeout hahaa. Keep doing a great job!!!!
Jolly Olive , any chance we could see a video on Bernie Williams? Borderline Hall of Famer, not part of the "Core 4" for the Yankees but played a huge role for the team during there championship run.
Showing love to Asian players is amazing since sadly racism is rife in the MLB (becuase it’s a part of a racist society) so I’m very happy to see this. Also I’m a Yankees fan 😂
If he hadn't got hurt, with the Yankee bats behind him, he could have put up an awful lot of wins. When you have a power offense behind you being the sort of pitcher who doesn't let up big home runs lets you win an awful lot of games. I think if he'd stayed healthy and stayed a Yankee he had an outside shot at 200 wins. Of course, it always comes down to staying healthy. History is littered with guys who could have been superstars if they could have stayed healthy.
Wang was a very good Sinkerball contact hitter; when he was getting those ground balls, he was hard to hit. Ruined his career running to first in an interleague game under NL rules.
Olive, you should do a video on all the Dominican players who got caught fudging their birthdays and even names when the the US started cracking down on international visas after 9/11. Vladimir Guerrero, Bartolo Colon, Miguel Tejada, Alfonso Soriano and many others aged multiple years over one offseason. Worst case was Fausto Carmona aka Roberto Hernandez who I believe was four years older than he claimed.
Baseball is such a fickle sport..esp for pitchers. It's why I have so much respect for the pitchers that did it at a high level year after year for a long time. Hitting is also a b***h, but pitching is way harder to have sustained success.
So any pitcher who makes the big leagues and manages to stay there for more than 3 seasons has succeeded in my book. Any player who manages to get there and stay for more than 5 is also in the same book for me.
Saying he "nearly" won the Cy Young is a little misleading. Yes, he was second in the vote, but Johan Santana won unanimously and had much, much better numbers. Santana basically lapped the field. You wouldn't say Tim Hudson "nearly won Cy Young" in 2000 with his 4.14 ERA runner up finish to sub 2.00 ERA Pedro Martinez. Wang's ERA was almost a full run worse than Santana.
There are a few moments in the video where I mistakenly refer to Wang as "Thai," not "Taiwanese."
I absentmindedly didnt make the distinction between Thailand and Taiwan, and sincerely apologize to anyone who might have been put off by that mistake. Hope you guys enjoy the video.
No worries dude. It happens, good on you for acknowledging it. Keep up the great work!
It's such a common mistake, I'm almost more amused when it doesn't happen at this point. But yes, the mea culpa is greatly appreciated nonetheless.
I'm from Taiwan, don't worry about that, really nice video, appreciate it. ♥️
Where is Nick Castellanos? Still a great vid as always

Can we get a Tim Lincecum video? Think that’d be an awesome one to cover. His pure brilliance over a 4 year span doesn’t get enough love
Big Time Timmy Jim
Yeah any pitcher dominating for four strait seasons is pretty rare. Especially in the modern age of analytics.
@@joshuapatrick682 the Freak pitching at home was an event. Best times.
Agree
Tim was fantastic!
Hey man looks like a few days after this video you got your wish :)
Man, why am I teary eyed on a Saturday watching a Pitching Career recap video. Dang you, Jolly.
Great video! Wang made his way back to the majors by pitching 6 scoreless innings against the Japanese all-star team in the 2013 world baseball classics. That game was as memorable as his back-to-back 19-win seasons.
thank you so much for shining light on my favourite player ever, he inspired an entire generation of taiwanese to love baseball
Also, Jolly getting sponsored by NASCAR? This guy keeps moving up in the world!
Can you do a Mark Buerhle video?
I would love a deep dive into his career! He’s definitely one of the most underrated left-handed pitchers. Loved him on the jays
Yes please
Dude pitched soooo many quality innings
Oh God yes, I’m an Astros fan and even I think he should be in the Hall.
Foolish Baseball (RIP Channel) already did one
Speaking of Asian born players, Chan Ho Park was one of first South Korean players in the MLB. He was good with the Dodgers before falling to shit in Texas. You should do a video on him.
Phillies legend

His video about diarrhea is hilarious.
@@unentirelyinsincere That wasn't Vlad it was Fernando Tatis
"i had a lotta diarrhea"
He injured his foot running the bases in a game against a national league team where no DH's were used -- and he was never the same - he had many many injuries
to this day, I blame Joe Girardi and Rob Thomson for the end of his career, literally zero reason to send him around 3rd base.
Wasn’t that game in Houston too, before they left the NL?
They’ve been screwing the Yankees since 2008, apparently 😂

Thank you for do this video, appreciate from Taiwan baseball fans😊
Wow Never thought you'd do his story . Wonderful episode ❤

Man I'd love for you to do a video on Scott Kazmir. The dude's story coming back up to the majors... twice... is really something special.
Shoutout from fan in Taiwan. Love the video!!!
He was one of my fav pitchers back then, that sinker was filthy
I love stories about the sinker. I like showing them to Jays fans..as this is their game plan.

Would love to see a video on Adam Laroche. He was a very fun player whose career just dropped once he went to Chicago
Jung Ho Kang deserves a video. Crazy rise, and atmospheric fall.
Definitely
love the pitcher videos!
Loved watching him as a kid.
Always had payers hitting into double plays
As a Mets fan, Wang’s back-to-back 19-win seasons are always at the back of my mind and I don’t know why. After this video, I think it might be that 10-strikeout performance. Great video!
Thanks for the video. He was the reason I started watching baseball.
As someone who shares the same surname as him, I appreciate you pronouncing it correctly and not going with the more common anglicized pronunciation.
I remember using him in MLB 07 the show all the time lol
Remember him comin onto the scene what felt like out of nowhere and carved a really solid career. Great video Jolly
2006 was the year of the Sinker. Wang in the AL, and Brandon Webb in the NL.
I remember watching that game, it was so incredibly sad. He was fun to watch
Jolly, he is not Thai. He is Taiwanese. I told my students in Thailand that there had never been an mlb player from there before. But I was wrong. Johnny Damon is the lone representative of Thailand in MLB history.
Thank you for the video, I enjoyed it
2:45 bro is not lacking any velo, he was like 94-97 at his best lol
I have been waiting years for this video
MLB Power Pros background music! Nice! 👍⚾️
The MLB Power Pros music is soooo nostalgic

Babe wake up Jolly dropped a banger
Loved him. Quality starter, inning eater and ass you mentioned a great fielder. Wasn’t the flashiest pitcher but certainly a good starter for a period.
I love your content and appreciation for other cultures. (coming from an asian)

At 6:01 the radar clocked 38 mph 😂 Lol
I love that he uses the music from MLB Power Pros 😂
When he said the Country of Taiwan, I smiled. Take that, CCCP!
Random, I know, but I'd love to see a Carl Crawford video. Especially because he was just named to the newly established Rays HOF. Dude was a beast.
You forgot to mention that wang left with a 6-0 record with kc
A did I gregorgius video would be awesome. Guy has a great story
Think we could get a Marco Estrada video one day? His career was all over the place and really underrated
geez my heart aches as a Taiwanese just by seeing the thumbnail, cuz I know I got to relive that CMW injury again. He's forever the legend in Taiwan.
Showing love to Asian players is amazing since sadly racism is rife in the MLB (becuase it’s a part of a racist society) so I’m very happy to see this.
Also I’m a Yankees fan 😂
Would love to see a Brian Dozier video.
Can you do a video about EL DUKE Hernandez?
Framber Valdez video?
I always thought Chien-Ming Wang was underrated because he wasn't some strikeout monster, but he was a very good pitcher.
GOATED MLB POWER PROS MUSIC
actually, Wang threw quite hard as a starting pitcher in the 2000s. His average FB velo was in top 5 as starting pitcher during 06-07.
Edgar Martinez PLEASE
Yes please!
Greetings from Taiwan
Until recently, i hadn't heard anyone talk about Chien Ming Wang in years, yet in the past 2 months or so I've seen like 3 videos about him.
You should do Francisco Cervelli. He was awesome.
Can you do a Joe Mauer video? Plus he will be on the ballot next year!
Id love to see an Aaron sele video
Can you do Daniel Murphy?

Wang was a very good Sinkerball contact hitter; when he was getting those ground balls, he was hard to hit.
Ruined his career running to first in an interleague game under NL rules.
7.5 k/9 was actually pretty decent for the era.
Jay Buhner video would be awesome
if Wang won a Cy Young, Rick Porcello’s award wouldnt look that bad, almost earned
台灣之光啊!!!
Can you do a Josh hamilton story video?
Do a video on matt kemp
Shawn chacon one of the only players to Allegedly put his hands on a owner.
Jolly can you do a video on the random success of Aaron Small and Shawn Chacon for the Yankees in 2005.
Aaron small had great run support. I was at playoff game where he bailed out that old bum randy Johnson
Chan ho park please!
Can we do a video of how Brandon Phillips was the most underrated player especially in the early 2010s
We need a Brett Lawrie lol his career was so short but he was the red bull king lol
Can you do Alex Gordon or Jason Heyward.
Can you do a Jeremy Guthrie video?
NASCAR SPONSORSHIP?!?!?! YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO that's wild.
Please do a video on Rick Ankiel.
If they lost in 4 games how did he pitch in game 5?
Baseball is such a fickle sport..esp for pitchers. It's why I have so much respect for the pitchers that did it at a high level year after year for a long time.
Hitting is also a b***h, but pitching is way harder to have sustained success.
Dale Murphy
Can you do Chan Ho Park
I'm Taiwanese and injuries really are the killer of Taiwanese players, Kuo Wang both haf their career "ended" because of injuries.
They are Chinese
A Daniel Murphy video would be interesting
If someone asked me about this guy, I'd just say "it's a Wang story" 😆
If only the NL had a DH in 2008
I can only imagine if they yanks in 09 had a healthy filthy Wang to go along with sabathia, Burnett, and a young nova, and Pettite.
If only he didn’t run the bases.
So any pitcher who makes the big leagues and manages to stay there for more than 3 seasons has succeeded in my book. Any player who manages to get there and stay for more than 5 is also in the same book for me.
Maybe a vid on Dave Dombrowksi? Not a player, but notable nonetheless
