Millennials like me weren't using good skincare because none existed, and the internet wasn't what it is now so access to information was limited. This isn't a Gen Z vs Millennial issue, it's about advancement in technology and communication. You can't judge someone's past actions by today's standards.

I'd say us Gen Zers had better skincare, but primarily because we had access to better information and a wider variety of products to choose from. That being said, as an older Gen Z, a lot of my time in middle school and high school was spent using Neutrogena wipes, Clean & Clear scrubs, and Biore pore strips.
Agreed!! There is SO much more education available today, it's amazing! Hopefully every future generation just gets better & better access to good skin care :D
I normally love your videos, but on this one I agree with other comments, that this is definitely not a great comparison video. Milennials used the crappy products because that's what was available to us. As you even stated, skincare has been going through somewhat of a renaissance, to where the market is overly saturated with skincare at all price points with GOOD skincare that has GOOD ingredients. A proper Milennial vs Gen Z video would look at what products both generations are using RIGHT NOW (as in, what skincare products are popular amongst Milennials right now vs what skincare products are popular amongst Gen Z right now) and see how the two compare.

This video is a little daft. Every "gen z" product he used was a product created by millennials or older. The youths just lucked out and came of age when we decided to make better skincare because what we had available in the 90s and early-00s as teens/young adults was terrible and antiquated.
Me, gen X, watching that Video and remembering that the highest SPF available in my teens was 20. Back then german drugstores had about three brands available on the shelves -Clearasil, LÓreal and Nivea. You basically had the choice between pure grease with fragrance or rubbing alcohol with even more fragrance. 😅 I wonder how, at 44, I still have skin.
I think this would have been better framed as "stuff gen z uses in their 20s vs stuff millennials used in their 20s".
Though my routine in my twenties, in the 2013-2019 era, was the same Neutrogena cleanser I still use, the Clinique dramatically different moisturizer that is actually too light for me now, and a mineral Neutrogena sunscreen. To be fair, I thought the sunscreen went before my moisturizer bc it was thinner. It was a bit of a dark time.
But yeah i dont think current skincare is gen z skincare so much as what gen x and millennials have created and established and are marketing to gen z, along with their own generations. We traumatized ourselves with too much exfoliation and want to spare the younguns from that.
Also i definitely see more millennials being hated on for existing than any other generation, but i am a millennial, so the algorithm is probably playing a part. I imagine it's doing that for you too, since you seem more gen z leaning.
Agreed. My go-to cleanser has been the YTTP superfood for years now, but I also absolutely bought a bottle of the purity years ago. I think think the video was just framed poorly.
As a millennial, I was honestly using physical scrubs almost everyday 😬 But thankfully I found your channel right before quarantine and I’ve been able to change my ways 🤣 I do wish that skincare RUclips existed when I was in my late teens and early twenties! We just didn’t have access to good information like I wish we would have.

As a 92 millennial I was obsessed with anything AVEENO. There obviously is a lot more skincare options now, which is kind of unfair when trying to compare, so no one should be fighting. Of course technology advances, and more research has been done for the best ingredients. Then more accessibility for overseas skincare/ingredients. It wasn't really an option until the internet truly exploded, only what was available in stores. I felt like growing up moisturizer I saw as something you had to do when you got older when you looked at Olay products, that's why millennials didn't have it as a part of their routine. We were focused on trying to find a great cleanser and acne products to clear our face. As someone said below, you definitely should have spoke about Proactive. They were one of the first to truly put together a package for skincare routine for people struggling with acne.
Neutrogena also had a good package for treating acne
The Pixi tonic is not a bad product at all even until nowadays if you’re not against fragrance. It’s relatively gentle exfoliating toner that can be used once a day and not irritating even if used that frequently for most people.
I was honestly surprised at how minimal the fragrance is! And yes, very gentle- probably my favorite of the Millenial products I tested out!
Totally agree. The Pixi tonic is awesome. I used it everyday and got no irritation. Only great results. Love that stuff.
This video doesn't make any sense... millennial products would have been Proactive, Stridex pads, Clean and Clear morning burst face wash, ST. IVES, LUSH, and Clinique. 3 step skincare systems all by the same brand that were heavily advertised to us because we didn't have RUclips/tik tok to help up form opinions.
This should be titled "5 years ago vs. today" because I used a couple of the "millennial" products in 2019. I use a lot of the "Gen Z" products now.

As an older gen Z, I can confirm I was using St Ives, back in 2016 and really any cheap products that kept popping up on those online magazines when I was looking for ways to clear my acne. So I'd say a good chunk of gen Z, especially the older ones used what would be considered "millennial skincare". I would've definitely called this video something more along the lines of how skincare choices have changed over the years, not "millennials vs Gen Z" because back then quite a few of us were old enough to be getting acne and looking for a solution too.
It's so different because we didn't have internet. We only had magazines and beauty counter workers telling us what we need.

So this isn’t a millenial vs gen z video. It’s a “products from 5-10 years ago Vs. Today” video. As you pointed out, Gen Z also used the “millenial” products years ago because that’s what existed at the time, and millenials use current products on the market available now rather than resorting to time travel, lol. But I guess it was the right move to get those clicks and start fights/engagement lmao.

Millennial skin care in my book is like St.Ives apricot scrub (applied with copious amounts of pressure) and a toner. The drier the better, the enemy was pimples and I thought if the skin was dry it meant the pores couldn’t get clogged 😅 I would only apply moisturizer if my skin felt so tight I couldn’t stand it. Also oil blotting pads, makeup wipes (I didn’t even wear makeup, just as a mid day cleanse), tea tree oil later on and witch hazel. SPF only if going out in the sun all day, none for daily wear or if out in the sun for an hour or 2. It’s a wonder my skin doesn’t look worse!

‘89 Millennial here who had all the bad products of the 2000s. Fortunately, I got into Korean skincare before it became popular because I started to get acne on a new medication. It was way more expensive then, but I was glowy, hydrated, and religiously putting on SPF in 2015. :)
So were you a millennial into K-Pop too? Cause same. That's how I got into Korean skincare products, and makeup!
@@ladyrose1993 Believe it or not, I've never been into k-pop! But others being into it definitely helped me find more k-beauty. I was into J-beauty in like 2010 but I couldn't afford it at the time.
I tried one of those nose pore strips once a few years ago. When I peeled it after whatever time the directions said, it took a painful amount of skin off (the area was tender for several hours) but literally zero nasty stuff came with it.
There was a faint but visible dent where it had been, as if I'd somehow used a cookie cutter on the surface of my nose skin but leaving deeper layers intact. I had assumed this was just my own skin being too fragile or something, but now it sounds like it wasn't just a "me" issue.
Gen X checking in, sun screen is very important when your young to keep your skin healthy and young looking as you get older. Also start a good routine young, you'll stave off the effects of aging. I have that kale cleanser, I like it's scent but it dries me out like crazy, I prefer the CeraVe hydrating cleanser but I also struggle with dry skin.

As a millennial born in ‘94, I used proactive physical exfoliating cleansers for so long, thinking that the beads would scrub off my acne… I even did the toothpaste on zits and dabbled into essential oils leaving my skin so red and broken out even more. Never again 😅😅

My goodness the Biore nose strips, I used those from about '06 until '13 when I started getting better at cleansers. Used Drunk Elephant stuff until about 4 years ago, stopping mostly because I just needed something good but more affordable and started following some of your recommendations on that

Millennial here (1988 🤫). We used Neutrogena, proactive, and oxy pads lol. Luckily, I had a mother who insisted I wear spf! I can’t remember a single day of my life that I didn’t use it. Granted, we didn’t have as many options as there are today.
Millenial here! I used to use pro-active religiously, then wanted to try something simpler and cheaper so I tried X-OUT. Do u remember that one?! Crazy! In my early phases I also tried neuragena pink grapefruit (skin got a rash, meh). We used to do the clay masks too haha. Later I found a dermatologist and now i use a complex routine of cerave cleanser, clindamycin in morning, and vaniclear moisturizer. Then, cleanser, tretinoin, and moisturizer. God i remember the phases before this, I tried everything!

And I'm an elder millennial who's been using moisturizer for almost 20 years. I think it's more about what you're exposed to and when. My face was itchy in college after showering, so I bought moisturizer.
See that's so odd to me bc I've always used moisturizer! So I really didn't know what Hyram was talking about there.
Same😭 older gen Z here and I NEVER used moisturizer until I finally went to a derm who told me I would probably need it because tret was going to make my skin dry as frick. (it was already dry before that, lol.) I was certain it was just going to make my acne worse, even though not using it was doing more damage.
Im like in between from when I first started skincare, to now. When I first started I was using all the heavy clay masks with all the fragrance and cute sparkles. Now, I use products that are actually good for my skin thanks to your channel! It's true, I never wore moisturizer before, but now it's one of my fav steps. And thank the lord for the Beauty of Josean Sunscreen! I love it sooo much.

I used to use and love St Ives moisturizer. I bought it recently to see if I still liked it and it felt different than I remembered. I found an old tub of it at my parents house and compared the ingredients and they changed it. I also had a lot of clean and clear. I had dry skin as a teen so it was interesting. I also loved pore strips because I also had a lot of black heads. I picked at my skin way too much. I was also born in 1996.
96 baby here, my mom made me wear oil of Olay with SPF everyday since middle school😂she also had me using this face cleanser called Basis and to this day I have no idea where she got that from she always ordered it online it wasn’t in stores lol
We didn’t have TikTok and RUclips was all makeup. We were livin’ on St. Ives and a prayer!
I'm a millennial and I exclusively use fenty skin products and I love them.
As a gen z even now there is so many products that we tend to over due it i am glad i found hyram 3 years ago because back then 9 yr old me was using staint iv srub
‘89 Millennial here! It’s unfortunate but millennials really didn’t have anything except for drugstore or Clinique if your mom used it. I knew early on Clinique products were not for me. In my high school years, I used Olay cleansing cloths but I def didn’t have a moisturizer so I just dealt with having dry and tight skin or if it bothered me enough, I’d use my body lotion on my face. Fast forward to the pandemic, I have quite the skincare routine and collection! I pat myself on the back every time I empty a sunscreen. I was told black people couldn’t get sunburn but I’ve been faithfully incorporating sunscreen into my routine since 2020!
I am a millennial, and I have to say before all of this skin care came out, we didn’t really have much available to us. Believe it or not, the only innovative company was proactive. It wasn’t as good as everybody claimed and way too expensive. I struggled with periodic breakouts and oily skin so it was tough for me to find things that worked. Not anymore obviously because it’s an overly saturated market these days.

i use korean skincare. cleanser is a foam cleanser from b.lab with matcha, i have from cosrx an aha exfoliation and an cosrx snail essence. also i have a serum from beauty of josean glow i thougt with niacinamide in it. and i use a Day and night cream of sheabutter because i love this one, i have an oily skin with big pores and uneven skin texture and i need hydratation that's why i use these products.
I feel like the title is a little misleading. This is more of a comparison of skincare 10 years ago vs now. For this title, I'd like to have seen a comparison of products that are popular for millennials vs gen z right now, as I'm sure the most popular item in each category is different for each group, today.
As a Millennial, I used that 3-step Clinique routine and my Shishedo sunscreen religiously in late elementary/Jr High. By high school I was addicted to Dermalogica. The hardest thing to break as a Millennial is not using all one brand for all my products!

I was born in 1996 so I don't know where I stand lol But yeah, my mother ALWAYS used moisturiser and sunscreen on me, my brother and herself. Back then, we did not use serums, toners and cleansers. Just basic soap, moisturiser and sunscreen. Despite not using all these fancy skincare we have now, my mother, grandmother and my grandfather sisters have the MOST beautiful skin I've ever seen and mind you, I live on a tropical islands. From my experience and where I'm from, I've seen the older generation (50+) have amazingly beautiful clear skin better than the youths today who are using all these advanced skincare products.
I think you are missing the luxury skincare from back in the day. I don’t know if this is a good comparison. Plus the retinol and spf hype probably exists because millennials are the ones worrying about aging.
Millenial here! (1988). I used noxema, clean and clear and sea breeze 😬 i felt the burn everytime but I was doing my best because the only way to get info was to ask around and thats what was popular. My mom who is a boomer recommended i switch to plain dial soap and oil of olay spf moisturizer. That is what I have used for the last 20 years. You're cringing, i know, but my skin actually looks fine and people always think im younger than i am. Once i adopted the habit of not touching my face and only applying foundation (merle norman) when my hands were squeaky clean, i hardly ever had a breakout again except for some hormonal acne or if my diet gets bad for a few days. I will say, my neice who is 15 has inspired me to look into more up to date options so i found my way to your chanel! I hadnt heard of most of the millenial products you talked about- maybe they were just ones you thought we used? Or did you consult with a true millenial? Ha..well thanks for the tips on some more improved products! I think diet, exercise, water, sleep, sunscreen in moisturizer and good quality foundation are the most important things but thats probably just my millenial upbringing talking. Chao!

La Roche Posay sensitive facial cleaner, their Glycolic acid serum for the evening and their Hyalu B5 during daytime under Anthelios sunscreen :)

I'm Gen X and a skincare junkie but to me it is obvious that Gen Z skincare is better because technically and formulas in skincare have gotten better and keeps evolving
Millenial with super sensitive skin here 🤚 - I don't wear makeup, so I only cleanse with water, then the Ordinary Niacinamide/Zinc serum, then when my skin tolerates it, I rotate between the Ordinary Retinoid 2% and Lactic acid, then I use CeraVe body lotion as a face cream cause I use it multiple time a day and find it identical to the CeraVe facecream, for dry days the Ordinary Amino acid and finish off with Avène spf 50 for kids :)
Clinique has had sunscreen for years.. that is what I used to used before all the new great sunscreens
I used to be allergic to chemical sunscreens so I never used it until I found your channel and found out that mineral sunscreens exist! My skin thanks you

I'm an Elder millennial, I've been using clenser, moisturizer, sunscreen and sometimes toner for about 20 years. Toner used to be a big thing back in the day. Some face cleansers often left a weird redisdue on the skin. Using a toner cleared it a way and it helped reduce skin irritation after the cleansers. I learned skin care from a Bobbi Brown beauty book I picked up in the "teens" section at my local library. 😂
All I can say is that I'm just so grateful that my teen skin in the early 2000's was so good because I never even thought about skincare. I'd use a washcloth in the shower on my face and then use that Clean & Clear moisturizer with the purple pump top, you know the one. And I would only get the occasional pimple every few months. I probably would've wrecked my skin if I used some of the products that were out there back then
As a millenial, I never used any of the ones you mentioned that millenials used. The reason being...no one told me that I had to do skincare or the importance of it. If anything, I started using it 8 years ago and I've been using what you're saying Gen Z is using so I feel like this is all off🤷♀
I’m a millennial and don’t mind gen z at all. I remember boomers giving us so much shit so I vowed to not do that to future generations. I haven’t watched this whole video yet but I think the youngest generation will always have better skincare cuz they’re up to the latest science and technology
I mean science evolves and we learn new things it’s not because of gen z it’s just how life and everything works as time goes on science improves and we find out new things and the internet really became a big thing and people see other countries skincare and it pushes other companies to improve. I just don’t like the gen z vs millennials because it’s not about the two generations at all.

The way ur skin turns red after each product
Not really a generation comparison, it's a time/trend or technology comparison. I'm peak/older millennial and I have NEVER wanted to matify my skin. And SPF was NOT unheard of! As an Australian, we are INTO sunscreens, it's just the filters have gotten better and more comfortable and therefore more wearable to different people!!!

I’m gen z and I used a mix of clean and clear, simple & Nivea until the late 2010s. Simple is still great but I would never use the other brands again.

I love that dewy skin look but in the summer I turn from dewy to shiny/oily in like 3 hours lol
I go for matte skin in summer and dewy the rest of the year😅

But gotta admit that I had less problems with (painful) acne with the "Millenial" products I used as a teen then now with everything else but also I put my skin through a LOT.. (Also a Zillenial here..97)

The oldest Gen Zers are ~25. While some might be involved in the skincare industry, I guarantee the majority of the products available today are developed and pushed by Millennials, precisely because we had the worst options growing up.
I’ve a family friend who’s getting eye surgery and she couldn’t wear spf on her forehead cuz of sweat and all so I was telling my mom about it she was like no one’s like you,overly obsessed with sunscreen and can’t live without it 🤡

So I work as a dog groomer, and the hair splinters are horrendous. I literally get tiny hairs imbedded in and every crevice of my body, specifically in the corners of my nose when I’m done shaving down a large dog with very course hair. The pore strips are literally the only way I can get rid of these little hairs. I try not to leave them on super long and use them as little as possible, but if anyone has a better solution, please help, calling fellow dog groomers🥹💪🏼

omg for the past like few days or so i ran out of moisturiser and just used sunscreen instead until i could restock- BIG MISTAKE! my skin is now ✨dry✨ and✨ flaky ✨so while i let it recover i'm just using a gentle cleanser, moisturiser and spf in the mornings (usually i'll use salicylic acid 2-3x a week along with face mask, but i'm leaving those alone ahah) any product recommendations/videos to binge to help me heal my skin?
