  • Join us in Bratislava, Slovakia as we sample Slovak food for the first time in this review of traditional Slovakian dishes at Prašná Bašta restaurant in the old town. Wanting to sample as much traditional Slovak cuisine as we possibly could we ordered an appetizer, two mains and a dessert to share along with some local produced wines. The meal itself was outstanding. Everything we had was delicious but we kind of made the mistake of ordering two many hearty and filling things to share when we probably could have swapped in a lighter appetizer for example. Regardless, it was a memorable meal and we'd highly recommend you try Slovak food whenever you get a chance:
    1) Slovak Wine - André and Cabernet Sauvignon (both dry reds)
    2) Slovak Appetizer - Palacinka Hortobágyi (Pancake with shredded chicken and cream sauce)
    3) Slovak main dish #1 - Bryndzové Halušky (Potato gnocchi with Slovak sheep cheese and bacon squares)
    4) Slovak main dish #2 - Bravčová Panenka (pork and beef tenderloin with paprika in potato and zucchini pancake)
    5) Slovak dessert - Somló (apple and whipped cream dessert)

Slovak Food Review - 5 Things to try in Bratislava, Slovakia Travel Video Transcript:
Hey guys. From Bratislava. It is lunchtime. Yes. And we've brought our appetites. So hungry! I didn't have a big breakfast so I have brought my appetite today. And we're going to be trying Slovak food for the first time. So this is an exciting moment for us.
So we made it to the restaurant (Prašná Bašta) and it feels like we're in this little cave. We're underground and it is so cozy and yeah. It is just dimly lit. It is not too busy so we've already placed our order and hopefully the food will be here soon because I'm so hungry.
Okay so Sam and I both got red wines. And they're both from Slovakia so I got the Cabernet Sauvignon and you got one called Andre.
Alright so the first dish has shown up at the table and it looks nothing like what we were expecting so we're kind of like wooh which one is this? I'm guessing it is the appetizer which I think was called palacinka hortobágyi or something like that. And it is meant to be potato pancakes with chicken in a cream sauce. And I mean this looks creamy. It does look creamy. But um I was expecting like a white cream sauce.
My main is here and I went for a traditional Slovak dish. I can't pronounce the name (Bryndzové Halušky) it is a little too complicated for me but basically it is a potato gnocchi made with Slovak sheep's cheese and it also has some bacon on top.
Okay and Sam ordered himself some kind of stuffed potato zucchini pancake. It looks so good. I've just got to show you guys how big this is. My hand for comparison. Like this is big. It is massive. It is massive. It is massive. So do you want to tell us what is in there. So inside we have pork and beef tenderloin in a paprika sauce.
Like this is our first introduction to you know Slovak cuisine and I'm saying I'm loving it so far.
This is actually not a Slovak dessert. We ordered Hungarian dessert because Sam thought it looked really appetizing. It is called Somlo.
Somlo. We had this when we were in Budapest.
Time for price point. So that was 35 Euros. That included two glasses of wine. One appetizer. Two mains and a dessert to share. So yeah, it wasn't a cheap meal but we knew that going in. We wanted something that was really good quality and we sure got that here. Portions were generous too and just everything was delicious. There wasn't anything that we ordered that we didn't love. So highly highly recommend this place and what a fantastic introduction to Slovak food I have to say. And now we need a siesta. Bye guys.
This is part of our Travel in Slovakia video series showcasing Slovak food (Slovakian food), Slovak culture (Slovakian culture) and Slovak cuisine (Slovakian cuisine).

I had one of the best meals of my life in a restaurant in old town Bratislava adjacent to the castle district. It was an icy cold winter afternoon, and the first thing plopped on the table was a huge bowl of steaming "Speck" (tiny cubes of glistening bacon fat). This Speck changed my life forever. I was living in Vienna at the time, for college - but I never truly understood Speck until that day. My lunch was Goulash Soup & Speck, Gimishta Salat & Speck, Bread & Butter & Speck, and my main course, a huge elephant-ear of perfectly fried crispy & juicy pork schnitzel with lots and lots of delicious smoky salty Speck. What a lunch. And when we finally left the restaurant to dare the freezing cold outside, we were both totally warm from the fat. Gpd Bless Speck.

5:40 is called "halušky" pronounce it as hah-loosh-kee .... the strong sheep cheese is called "bryndza" (breend-zah) and the taste is very similar to greek Feta cheese, but much mich stronger...... if Slovaks go abroad and want to cook halušky, they cannot transfer bryndza with them on plane (since its a milk product) so they replace it with Feta (which is easier to find in stores in foregin countries) ... its definitely not the real taste of a traditional halušky but its probably the best and closest replacement

Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos I’m watching this video as I’m about to take a bus from Budapest to Bratislava and I just had Hortobágyi palacsinta two days ago and I think it’s Hungarian. On Wikipedia that’s what it says. Although I’ll pretend it’s Slovakian in a few hours, because definitely my favorite thing I’ve eaten in Budapest. So definitely eating some when I get to Bratislava.

Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos well Bratislava is surely nice but nicer places are further to the east. However, Zlaté Piesky is a beach near Dunaj, and if the weather is nice there is no better place in Bratislava. But, overall anywhere the Danube River is a nice place. Great video. After watching more than 20 of your videos, I came across your wedding video and I had no idea you were married, you never really mention it 😂😂😂. By the way, you guys eat so much and are in great shape...so envious. It also makes me realize that you have to be, in order to do food videos and not get bullied constantly. I've seen very nasty comments in other youtubers' channels about that, which is disgusting that ppl feel entitled to be mean.

Potato dough can be used as a base for various dishes. Also for dumplings and noodles. Such dishes are found mainly in the Bohemian cuisine. But they are known in several countries. You can make sweet and spicy dishes, e. g. with poppy seeds, sugar, plum jam or with bacon, greaves etc.

Of course you did...its post ´89 variation of classic meal called: "sviečková" (which is quite common in Slovak cousine).
Beef is replaced here by chicken meat, bread dumpling is replaced by pancake (palacinka). But sauce remains completely the same...
They cook it in restaurants quite often here...
For Sam and Audrey - this is not definitely "ancient" Slovak meal, but let´s say - "new school" Slovak food (it gained notoriety among us in last 50 years)

I would like to recommend also their sausages. If you go another time, just go to the supermarket (or butcher) and head for the deli. They have a good selection of slovak sausages, they are ready to eat as they are. Choose a couple that look nice and then pick up some bread and a beverage with that. Then you got yourself some really good lunch or dinner. And just put your butts on a parkbench somewhere in the town and enjoy:) And its also good travelfood, because it does not have to be chilled.
    Keep up your good work.
I would like to add one more thing actually. The best breakfast i ate in Bratislava is at a penzion just behind or next to the US embassy. Penzion Portus, they have great breakfast but also huge portions for lunch and dinner. Try this place, its just to google it. Very central place not far from the opera house.

I'm glad you enjoyed Slovak food. Just to correct you in the case of potato pancake - there is not zucchini ingredient at all - it is made from crude potatoes, darker color is because potato once grated is oxidizing very quickly and change color to dark. It is just potatoes, flour, garlic, salt, and a whole egg. Paprika is absolutely the most important ingredient of Slovak kitchen, the heritage of Hungarian influence for centuries indeed. There a many outstanding Slovak deserts, no reason to pick-up a Hungarian one, they have no idea what desert is.

I am mostly Slovak/ Hungarian and born in the USA. My Grandma (my mom's mother) only would make stuffed cabbage as a Slovak dish, it is also Polish and other middle European peoples dish also. That along with Kielbasa and sourkraut, I've heard of Hungarian Goulash BUT have no idea just what it is, My mom makes "Halushki" but it is likely NOTHING like it is in Slovakia or Hungary, she uses egg noodles with blue cheese, cottage cheese and onions. It tastes good, BUT, is likely nothing like "Halishki" is made in Slovakia or Hungary.

@@samuelandaudrey France,Spain,California. All big regions. So wine makers can grow on huge areas,so they grown lot and that is why you see their wine everywhere.Slovakia and rest of the eastern Europe had comunism. When comunism started, comunists took from people all land.Turned small family farms into big joined ,,JRD,, .They cared about quantity, not a quality. After colaps of comunism, wine making slowly started to go up in eastern Europe. Now you find some realy nice wines coming from this region, but as I said, they can grow on small land,so they can not supply Tesco...Slovakia is now well known for its Rose, same as Tokai.I think you should for sure visit Georgia in causasus as this is very interesting place with lovely people, great nature, tasty food and is cheap as chips. And that is where wine came from. Also we have lovely and highly rated honey and honey wine, where we also get many medals on international top competitions.

But overall good choices even thou I like just the dumplings (halušky) from your choice

Its spicy delicious soup made mainly of paprika and držky-its chopped stripes of cow stomach. It may discourage you but its really delicious. especially with bread. Also try sheep cheese (not that one in halušky), or párnica(also cheese).
