It's an extremely strange paradox that everyone knows who Jack the Ripper was. And yet no one knows who Jack the Ripper was.
I think the most important thing about Jack the Ripper was not who he was in particular, but what kind of person he was. That is why the analysis of such horrible people is so important: to hopefully prevent more of these crimes.
@Madolite yeah ... their bodies were ripped apart by Jack
Today he would be swamped with love letters from female fans in prison... "Oh murder me with your love, Jackie..."
Indeed
Some people think Holmes and the ripper are the same person. When Holmes would vacation out of the country he would do his killings in the UK
Wow. Love the idea of Dr. Grande doing killers from history.
Yeah, he's really killing it lately!
@@nonprogrediestregredi1711 lol
Dr. Grande must have thought he could take a stab at that slice of history.
Yes! Would love to see more of this
Well he has done zodiac, Ted bundy etc. so this isn’t all that crazy
As a NJ resident, I'm furious that you've described my state so accurately.
🤣 My condolences.
Depends where you live.
You're not from NJ
@@kevinc809 I know.
😂
I really cant wrap my head around how people can perform such profound cruelty upon another person for seemingly no genuinely good reason.
Oh really? It’s a psycho with a personal inflated ego toward women.
Yeah, it’s crazy.
Could there ever be a good reason?
Psychopathy
@@joho9815 Well maybe not for brutality but there are plenty of good reasons for people to kill. If your thinking universally-hunting/slaughtering animals for food, PVP: Self/community defense, fighting "evil" folks.
i guess that is pretty much the only good killings I can think of
Thank you for showing photos of the victims from their lives and not the gruesome autopsies. I think often people forget that they were real people with hardships and serious problems, just trying to get by.
The autopsies are more interesting from a crime point of view.
Unfortunately only one of these photos is genuine: the one of Annie Chapman.
Cringe sjw woke weakling
@@SuzD0n Yes, the others are CGI "reconstructions", probably used here because the post-mortem photographs would be too gruesome.
@@chrischibnall593 true. The picture of Mary Kelly still haunts me.
As a Ripper buff of many years this video is one of the best I've ever seen to get into the nitty-gritty of the Ripper's personality. It also includes some photos of the victims I've never seen in other books. You've excelled yourself once again Dr Grande.
These pics are not all accurate
@@feelthejoy No? Thought they were too good to be true...most photos I've seen are post-mortem.
@@lexiwilson9501 have you read The Five? There are several from-life photos in her book, and all her research is impeccable
@@feelthejoy Glad you mentioned this. One of them is thought to be from life, though: the picture of Annie Chapman was discovered recently.
@@SuzD0n yes it’s in Hallie Rubenhold’s book.
Excellent again! A hundred years ago my family members were desperate Scots who immigrated to NYC illegally, impersonated another famous family, dispensed drugs without licenses and - pretty sure - poisoned a few people. I’m impressed with how well Dr. G analyzed such a long ago mystery. I’d like to do the same, but the family would retaliate, has already retaliated. They’re still impersonating the famous Andersons. Great inspiration, thanks Dr. Grande.
I’m quite certain that the cause of this case is tied somehow to excessive masturbation I speak of course not from experience but well you know these women were unclean and you know well
Lovely family..
Would love to hear more about your family
So stay away from all doctors named Anderson?
@@3dguy839 So they deserved their fate? Victim blaming is disgusting
Perhaps the most intriguing yet frustrating part of the case, is how there were close instances in which he could've been caught. In Lemmino's documentary on the case, in the murder of catherine eddows, it was shown that the place she was killed in was at the time, under patrol by an officer (who happened to have left the vicinity to patrol other areas at the time of the murder). Then to make it more frustrating, the area had been inhabited by a policeman and his family, who would've gotten the full view murder site, yet had slept through the whole ordeal. There was also a night-watchman at the time, who was cleaning a warehouse near the residence. He was within earshot, yet he had not heard a thing. It's amazing how the killer has managed to evade the police and time itself. It is by no wonder that it has remained as one of the most prominent, timeless classics.
I think they knew who it was, and my guess is it could have been someone of prominence and influence.
Mookies: In reply to your excellent and insightful comment, it seems to me that Victorian anti-Semitism, sexism and classism are writ large all over this case. The Whitechapel police were hampered by the utter absence of any kind of technology AND by their own prejudices against the Unfortunates, who in Victorian times were believed to have brought this horrific fate upon themselves. Dickens' sentimental--and therefore severely flawed--novel, OLIVER TWIST is rife with these prejudices; child sex trafficking in that book becomes encoded into "pickpocketing." The Victorians simply could not have an honest discussion about sex to save their lives--literally.
By the way--the 1948 film version of the novel wipes away every trace of sentimentality and presents the situation in all its stark horror.
@@maxalberts2003 Yes. I am sick even thinking of the horror these five women endured as their throats were cut and the blood... ugh sickening. It's not something to romanticize.
@@erikasmith8894 that's quite possible too, it could be that the person may be a cop themselves and their deeds were covered up by higher-ups to maintain the pristine reputation of the police force. Though i must admit that it would be pretty amazing if it was all a stroke of luck and not a huge cover up.
I have lowkey always wanted to see your take on this case. Thank you for the video today, Doc!
Seems like hundreds of people have requested this!!
Dr Grande's take that the letters and kidney and such, were never from jack, but from other persons or groups looking to politicise or sensationalise the murders further, actually seems quite pertinent
He was a bog-standard serial killer who benefitted from lack of forensic science and medicine
In fact, even the famous serial killers like son of sam, or btk, would not have had quite the murder spree, in todays world
The FBI tend to close in very quickly nowadays
@@hardplans2366 Bog-standard I've never heard that. I know what you mean, I think, are you from the UK?
@@lynnehuff9659 Indeed 😉
Whoever coined the name ‘Jack The Ripper‘ , did a terrific job in preserving the notoriety of this killer !
I heard it was combining a very normal name with a more disturbing description that made this so effective. Basically a case of it could be anyone doing this gruesome act. The normal guy next door maybe....made it all the more sinister.
@Barry4B. I think one of the letters the killer wrote to the press was signed "Jack the Ripper", so he basically named himself. I'll give Dr Grande the benefit of the doubt. Some people don't believe the killer actually wrote the letters, but that's where the name emerged.
It is believed Frederick Best a journalist at the time was the one who wrote the DEAR BOSS LETTER (where the name Jack The Ripper came from) and the SAUCY JACK POSTCARD, police did not have enough evidence against him.
I agree, very catchy and very accurate.
@@ernaanspach473Yes, he named himself if that letter was not a hoax. I think it's not, but only God knows.
Would still love to see you do a segment on H.H. Holmes, the famous Murder Hotel serial killer in the early 1900s US
Me too. That would be a good one.
Late 1880s. He was hung in 1896, but almost everything about him is exaggerated or outright lies. He confessed to killing many people that were in fact alive at the time of his hanging.

He won't risk doing that because its pretty obvious who killed her.
Like the Zodiac Killer, this is one of those cases where we don’t know who Jack the Ripper is, but there are a number of suspects. One of them could be Jack and others likely weren’t him at all. It’s cool to hear your thoughts on this case Dr. Grande, keep up the great work!
Ted Crus is the Zodiac.

Thanks for finally doing this-you're awesome
I've always felt that the 'From Hell' letter was genuine. I think it was prompted by the 'Jack the Ripper' letters and that he would not have written otherwise. It did contain half a human kidney and there's debate on whether or not it came from Eddows or whether it showed, (as some references I've seen have said), evidence of Bright's disease; common in alcoholics. Great analysis, as always!
It does seem a rather involved hoax...
I know there is some talk about it being a hoax by medical students.
I am guessing the kidney just got thrown in the trash lol
I think that the "From Hell" letter was the only one that could have been authentic. Some of these serial killers take "trophies" with them (e.g. Dennis Rader, Ed Gein) & it would have been a novel thing in 1888. Not something a med student or other hoaxer would have come up with.
@@codemiesterbeats it seems genuine to me because whoever sent it would have to have known that the kidney was taken and i'm not sure but i doubt that information was widely available that soon in the newspapers. Plus they would have to match up the same side of kidney and from a heavy drinker. Also why would they send it to George Lusk it seems it had to be somebody that knew him rather than to the police or the news agency if it was just a hoax. The killer likely joined up with Lusk's group looking for himself
Almost as bad as New Jersey, LOL! Good one, Dr. Grande.

He (or she, but most likely a he) was the first famous classic serial killer, was never caught, was horribly sadistic, and taunted the authorities… it’s no wonder why the case is still compelling.

My favourite mystery! Glad he's done an analysis.
I always watch anything about the Ripper. So excited for this!
If anyone is interested in the Ripper murders, I highly recommend reading "The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper" by Hallie Rubenhold. It adds important context about the victims and examines their lives with more empathy than is usually given to them.
It's unlikely that all of the women were full-time professional sex workers. Newspapers (and society in general) at that time tended to assume a woman was a sex worker if she was unhoused or not living with a male partner or relative. It's possible that at least some of the women would occasionally turn to sex work on a casual basis when they were unable to get income elsewhere, without actually considering prostitution to be their main 'job'. This would have been a relatively common practice among the poorest of London who had no other support networks.
Alcohol dependency issues were also extremely high among the poorest of London Victorian society. Most victims of the Ripper had alcohol and addiction issues, but these issues would have been typical rather than exceptional.
London prostitutes aren't especially interesting.
@@eadweard. That's ok, not everyone can be a reader 👍
This has always been an interesting case even if there has been more prolific and sadistic serial killers in history. I’d imagine whoever Jack the Ripper was he met with something that cut his murderous career short, we will never know for sure.
There is another key suspect Dr Grande failed to mention, which is and quack surgeon named Tumblety. He was a misogynist who returned to America after the killings ceased and was acknowledged in newspapers of the time as a suspect. And Kosminsky was locked away in an asylum shortly after the last murder; he was named years after the case was closed by the leader of the investigation to a friend as Jack the Ripper.
Not necessarily
He might have been eaten by a Silurian.

What an interesting video! Also, how nice to see nice images of the canonical 5.
I’m surprised you hadn’t already covered Mr. Ripper. Also, in regards to the stench, London had a massive horseshit problem at the time. There were so many horses being used and abused for transportation at the time that it seriously threatened to choke the city. Without really ever solving the problem, London was saved by the automobile which made horses fairly redundant. Unfortunately for the enslaved horses, most of them were killed since they were no longer needed by the Londoners. At the time, the decision to kill the horses prompted perhaps the largest animal rights debate in known history and began much of the animal rights literature that’s still used today.
I'm super excited for this one
