- A rather frustrating last two afternoons and evenings, trying to repair a broken latch on my van's side door. Editing the video wasn't a whole lot easier either, due to several program crashes, for what are still unknown reasons, but at least Part 1 (of 2) is done, and I now have a much newer and higher end video card installed! Part 2 will include some extra details on the latch mechanism/s too.
Just bought a 1995 with the exact paint job. Running boards are whit though. Really like the gold.

For all those interested, I have changed every cables on all 4 cargo doors of a 2007 E250. Only the cargo doors, not the front driver and passenger...not yet. The cables and metal unit (if you were to buy the whole kit) are identical on both side cargo passenger and back door passenger. The only difference between the two is the bottom lock. The bottom lock on the cargo passenger door is attached to the metal while the one on the back passenger door is attached to the license plate box/tray. The cables are identical on both units.
The same applies to the inside cargo & back doors (the door you open after opening the right one) The metal units and cables are identical for both top and bottoms.
Also, the 'top' cable (the shorter one) from both cargo & back passenger doors are just to open the door from the interior. Well, that short cable is identical length to the 'left back door bottom" (driver side). I was in a bind because the back driver side door would no longer open. I had a spare cargo passenger side door complete unit so I decided to check if the top cable was the same length and voila! door was fixed using that cable. It still had to order the top cable for that door but at least I could open the door until I received it.
Hope this helps some of you that need to change the cables and please, do not waste your $$ on those metal ends unless you know for sure they will fit with your van year. I bought some and none worked. They all would have needed to be modified and from what I have read online, it has happened to others also. The original cables are not that expensive on Ebay.

Running thunder, those cables can be quite expensive to buy. I found aluminum end replacement you can buy on EBay for a fraction of the cost. I bought a pack of 4 for $10 and was able to fix a side door on another van. If you buy those ends, just make sure it fits your specific van model because there are a few different ones on the market. The ones I bought on EBay are called ‘Door Latch Cable Repair Kit Dorman’. Do a RUclips search, you will see they are easy to to replace.

Hello, I hope you will see this! I am doing the same thing with my van, but I don’t seem to have the right tool to remove those three button top bolts that secure the latch to the inside of the door (you removed the third one at 3:35 with a power tool). What do I need in order to remove them? Thank you!
Christiana, thank you for your question. I have been out of town, and just got back home. Give me a few more hours and I will tell you the kind and size of drill tip, that you'll need to get, either online, or from any hardware/ auto parts store. I have not had the time to complete Part 2 or include photo still details of how the work was completed, but will try to get back on this project as soon as I am able.
I'm sorry I don't have a way to include the photo I took, but the 'Torx' bit you 'll need to remove the side door latch screws, is a 27mm Torx/ star type, and I got my bit set at Tractor Supply, but they are easily found at any hardware or auto parts store, and even at Walmart.

I have two Questions: #1 How did you get the door Open since the piece was broken? and #2 Where is Video PART 2. I'm having the same problem I already ordered the parts(little metal End pieces). TFS :O)
Hi, sorry I haven't had the time to complete the Part 2 video yet. But to answer question 1, I was able to open the side door from the inside latch, because the end piece for it hadn't worn completely out. However, you should be able to pull on the cable itself, from inside the opening in the door panel.

Sorry Ryan, personal health and family issues have prevented me from creating Part 2 at this time. However, I haven't abandoned the project altogether. And, not having a garage, prevents me from working on the van during less than ideal weather conditions.
I got that part fixed but it can only open on the inside, they said the little door on the left is not right it won't open from the outside
I haven't had to deal with the smaller, left side passenger door yet, so I don't have any advice to date.

The cables are original, I didn't have to replace them. The aluminum ferules were purchased from Amazon, and there are several sites to choose from. I recommend getting entire sets, as all the doors on my 2001 van are starting to give me problems.

I'm sorry I haven't been able to create Part 2 due to health issues, but I hope to finish it, with even better detail, in the not too distant future.
Sorry to read about Health issues. I followed #1 and am trying to figure out how to reconnect from door release to door latch. See you removed actuator. Will try that. Thanks for a great video
@@michaelleblanc9153 yes, to get the entire mechanism out where you can see it and get to it, you will have to drill out the rivet that holds the actuator and remove it. Be sure to note the two different cable lengths, and I think it's the lower latch cable that requires the smallest ferrule head.

after breaking off 2 drill bits on rivet, I used a dremel tool cut it off. I now have a mechanical issue with latches not releasing to allow doors to open.
Daylight ran out so will continue to investigate tomorrow. (I work better in daylight)
I believe my actuator was in middle position when I removed it.
I did NOT notice the ferrules have different heads. That may be part of my issue
No LARGE rivet gun so Modified the mounting for a 5/16 bolt.
I still love your video and bet your solution was less work than mine.
Ok issue resolved with door latches not opening. Needed to reposition actuator for it to lock/unlock correctly. Only about 20 min while still cool in daylight . Suggest checking as each piece is assembled to confirm correct operation.

You buy an older Econoline. Just be ready to do them all with metal repair kits. As them cables cost $300.00 from Ford....
